Terraria Dedicated Server vs Host & Play: Which Is Better?

Host & Play is the simplest choice for short co-op sessions. A dedicated Terraria server is worth the extra networking and maintenance when friends need a persistent world, different schedules, or 24/7 modded access.

Choose Host & Play for the fastest setup and occasional co-op when the person who starts the world will be playing too. Choose a dedicated server when the world should remain available while that person is offline, players have different schedules, or you need a persistent process with explicit administration.

The practical dividing line is not graphics quality or world size. It is who keeps the session running. Host & Play ties the multiplayer session to one player’s Terraria client. A dedicated server runs the world as a separate process, so players can join and leave independently while that process remains online.

What Host & Play and a dedicated server actually are

Host & Play

Host & Play is Terraria’s built-in multiplayer route. The official guide describes it as the simplest way to play multiplayer and says it suits short online co-op games and in-home LAN sessions. You launch Terraria normally, open Multiplayer → Host & Play, choose an existing world or create one, and optionally set a password.

The player who starts Host & Play is also the session host. In practical use, the world is available only while that player’s game process is running and connected. If the host quits Terraria, loses the connection, or shuts down the computer, other players cannot continue in that world until the host starts it again.

Dedicated server

A dedicated server is a separate Terraria server program rather than a multiplayer session inside the normal game client. It can run on another computer, a spare machine, or cloud infrastructure. The official multiplayer documentation notes that a server can run without graphical requirements and without requiring any particular player to remain connected.

Players connect to that running process with their game clients. The operator selects the world, configures the server, controls access, performs restarts and backups, and keeps the machine and network reachable. A dedicated server therefore changes the job from “start a co-op game” to “operate a small game service.”

Side-by-side comparison

Decision axis Host & Play Dedicated server
Fastest start Built into the normal client; choose Multiplayer, Host & Play, then a world. Requires launching and configuring a separate server process.
Must the usual host stay online? Yes. The session is tied to the host’s running game process. No particular player needs to remain connected while the server process runs.
Best fit Short co-op sessions, home LAN play, and small groups with a predictable host. Persistent worlds, rotating schedules, recurring communities, and access when the owner is not playing.
Networking work Steam invitations can reduce manual networking for compatible desktop players; the exact IP or LAN behavior depends on the connection method. Residential NAT may require router port forwarding. Firewalls and cloud security rules must allow the server port.
Administration Start the session, select a world, and set a password. Manage the process, configuration, world selection, restarts, backups, permissions, and network exposure.
Persistence Unavailable when the host’s client is closed or disconnected. Available whenever the server machine and process are online, even if every player has left.
Modded play Convenient for a small coordinated group that can keep the same mod list and versions. Better for a persistent modded world, but every client still needs matching mods, versions, and load order.
Player scale Practical for a small known group and a host who can be present. More suitable for recurring groups or communities; the default server maximum is 16 players and can be changed.
Cost and hardware Uses the host’s existing gaming computer while the client is running. Uses a continuously available computer or hosting service; no universal CPU, memory, bandwidth, or monthly-cost threshold applies to every setup.

Which option is better for your schedule?

Two to four friends playing for a few hours

Use Host & Play unless the host’s internet connection is unusually restrictive. It avoids a second installation, separate configuration files, and a machine that must stay powered after the session. The host starts the world, shares the invitation or connection details, and closes the session when everyone is finished.

Friends who play at different times

Use a dedicated server. Because the world runs independently of a player’s game client, one person can stop playing without ending access for everyone else. This is the decisive advantage when one friend plays in the afternoon, another joins late at night, and nobody can reliably be the permanent host.

A recurring group or public-style community

Prefer a dedicated server and treat it as an operated service. Plan who can restart it, how worlds are backed up, how passwords or permissions are distributed, and who responds when the machine or network fails. The separate process also makes scheduled maintenance and a documented configuration possible.

A small modded campaign

Either mode can work for a close-knit group. Host & Play is easier when everyone is present at the same time. A dedicated server is preferable when the campaign must remain available between sessions, but it does not remove the synchronization requirement: every participant must use the same enabled mods, matching versions, and the same load order.

You cannot configure your home router

Host & Play may be the least frustrating choice if invitations work through your chosen platform. For a persistent world, use a managed Terraria host or another network design only after checking its current Terraria version, mod support, backup policy, and pricing. A service can remove router administration, but it does not eliminate the need to manage worlds, passwords, updates, and mod compatibility.

How to start a Host & Play world

  1. Launch Terraria. Use the normal game client on the computer that will act as host.
  2. Open the multiplayer menu. Select Multiplayer → Host & Play.
  3. Select or create a world. Choose the existing world your group will use, or create a new one.
  4. Set a password. A password is optional, but it is sensible for an internet session with anyone outside your household.
  5. Invite or provide connection details. Use the invitation method available to your platform. Steam-based invitations can minimize manual networking for compatible desktop players; LAN and direct-IP behavior depends on the network and connection method.
  6. Keep the host session running. Other players remain dependent on the host’s Terraria process. Closing the game, suspending the computer, or losing the host connection ends practical access until the world is hosted again.

Host & Play has very little server administration because the game client handles world selection and session startup. That simplicity is its strength, not a missing feature: there is no separate daemon to patch, no server console to monitor, and no always-on machine to maintain.

How a dedicated server works

The dedicated-server workflow has four parts: a server program, a world file, a reachable network endpoint, and an operator responsible for availability. You launch the server process, select or create a world, configure its settings, and leave it running. Players then connect with their Terraria clients while the process remains online.

Server process and world selection

The server can run on a computer without a graphical desktop. During startup, you select the world and set server options. Configuration can be supplied interactively or through serverconfig.txt, which is also where the maximum-player setting can be managed.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Default player limit

The default maximum is 16 players. That value is not a universal recommendation for every machine or connection; it is the server’s default limit and can be changed during startup or in serverconfig.txt. Actual play quality depends on the world, mods, activity, operating system, and hosting location.

Keeping the world available

A dedicated server is persistent only to the extent that its process and machine are available. A power outage, operating-system update, crashed process, lost internet connection, or maintenance stop still makes the world unreachable. “Dedicated” means independent of a player’s client, not immune to downtime.

Administration duties

  • World management: choose the correct world and protect its save files.
  • Access control: distribute the password or connection details only to intended players.
  • Restarts: stop and start the process deliberately after updates or failures.
  • Backups: copy world data before major changes, mod updates, or experiments.
  • Network security: expose only the required service and keep firewall rules limited to trusted needs.
  • Documentation: record the server version, configuration, world name, mods, and load order so another administrator can recover it.

Networking: do you need to port-forward?

For a dedicated Terraria server reachable from the public internet, residential NAT commonly means configuring port forwarding on the router. The official server guidance identifies TCP port 7777 as the default. Forwarding is not always required for players on the same local network, and platform invitation systems can change the experience for compatible Host & Play sessions, but a publicly reachable self-hosted server normally needs an inbound path.

Home-network checklist

  1. Confirm the server’s listening port. Use 7777 unless you deliberately changed it in the server configuration.
  2. Give the server computer a stable local address. A DHCP reservation or equivalent prevents the router rule from pointing at the wrong machine after a reboot.
  3. Create a router port-forward rule. Forward TCP 7777 from the router’s external interface to the server computer’s local address and the same port.
  4. Allow the port through the computer firewall. A router rule alone cannot help if the operating-system firewall blocks the server process.
  5. Share the correct external address privately. Do not publish an unprotected server address and password in public channels.
  6. Test from outside the home network. Testing only from the server’s own LAN can hide NAT, firewall, or hairpin-routing problems.

Cloud hosting has a second firewall layer. In addition to the operating-system firewall, the provider’s network security group or security settings must allow the server port. If that rule is missing, the process may appear healthy locally while every remote connection times out.

Common connection failures

  • Connection refused or timeout: verify that the server process is running, the port matches the configuration, and both router and operating-system firewall rules allow it.
  • Players on the same home network can join, but friends outside cannot: inspect port forwarding, the public address, and any carrier-grade NAT or provider-level inbound restriction.
  • The rule worked until a reboot: check whether the server computer’s local IP changed; reserve the address and update the forwarding target if necessary.
  • Cloud server is unreachable despite an open local port: check the provider’s firewall or security-group rule as well as the instance firewall.

Modded Terraria: the synchronization rule that decides everything

tModLoader’s multiplayer documentation states that all players must have the exact same mods installed and enabled. In practice, “same” includes the mod versions and load order, not merely similar names. A client with one extra mod, a different version, or a different order can fail to join or behave differently from the server.

Host & Play for mods

Host & Play is the easy route for a small modded group because the host can launch the modded client and invite everyone in one session. Before joining, each player should compare the enabled collection and versions with the host. This approach works best when the group plays together and changes the mod list infrequently.

Dedicated server for mods

A dedicated modded server is the better fit for a 24/7 world or a larger recurring group. Record the mod collection, exact versions, and load order in a shared note. Apply changes during a planned maintenance window, back up the world first, and have every player update before reconnecting.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

tModLoader’s dedicated-server utilities document Linux and server-management tooling, but they also state that ARM support currently does not exist for tModLoader or its dedicated server. An ARM-based board or instance therefore should not be treated as a supported target for this setup.

Mod-update recovery procedure

  1. Stop the server cleanly and make a copy of the world and configuration.
  2. Write down the current mod list, versions, and load order before changing anything.
  3. Update the server and clients to the intended collection, not to a mixture of old and new files.
  4. Start the server and check its console for load errors before inviting players.
  5. If a player cannot join, compare their enabled list, versions, and order line by line with the server record.
  6. Restore the backup if the update damages world behavior or introduces an unrecoverable load failure.

Cost, hardware, and operational trade-offs

Host & Play normally adds no separate hosting bill because it uses the host’s existing game computer. Its hidden cost is availability: the host must keep the client open, and the computer cannot be shut down without ending access.

A dedicated server consumes resources continuously if you want 24/7 availability. That could mean leaving a personal computer powered on, assigning a spare machine, or paying for managed or cloud infrastructure. The supplied official material does not establish a universal CPU, RAM, bandwidth, latency, or monthly-price threshold. Requirements vary with vanilla versus modded play, player count, world activity, operating system, and hosting location, so a precise “you need X GB of RAM” claim would be misleading.

Questions to ask before choosing paid hosting

  • Which Terraria version is supported today?
  • Are tModLoader and your intended mod collection supported?
  • Are automated world backups included, and how are restores performed?
  • Can you change the server port, player limit, world, and launch arguments?
  • Where is the server located, and will that location give your group acceptable latency?
  • What happens during crashes, upgrades, or billing interruptions?

Security and maintenance practices

A private friend server still deserves basic protection. Use a non-obvious password, share it through a private channel, and avoid opening unrelated ports. Keep the operating system and server software updated, but schedule updates rather than applying them during an active session.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Back up the world before mod changes, major progression milestones, or configuration experiments. Keep at least one copy that is not stored in the same directory as the live world. Test a restore occasionally; a backup that has never been restored is only an assumption.

Assign an operator and a backup operator for recurring groups. Document where the world, configuration, logs, and mod files live, how to start and stop the process, which port is used, and who has permission to change the world. This turns an individual hobby setup into something the group can recover when the original host is unavailable.

A decision checklist

  • Choose Host & Play if the group is small, sessions are short, everyone usually plays together, and the host wants zero server administration.
  • Choose a dedicated server if friends play on different schedules, the world must stay online without its owner, or you are running a recurring community.
  • For modded play, choose based on availability needs, then enforce one exact mod collection, version set, and load order for every player.
  • If you cannot port-forward, use Host & Play when it meets your schedule, or evaluate a managed option with verified version, mod, backup, and pricing support.
  • Do not choose solely by the default 16-player figure or by an assumed hardware requirement; real capacity depends on the specific world and workload.

Verdict

For most two-to-four-player sessions, Host & Play is better because it gets everyone into the world quickly and ends cleanly when the host leaves. A dedicated server is better when persistence is the requirement: friends can join at different times, the world can run while its owner is offline, and the group can build a repeatable administration process around it. The extra networking and maintenance are worthwhile only when that availability matters.
