Terraria Reviews: Is the Sandbox Adventure Worth Playing in 2026?

Terraria is a player-directed 2D sandbox adventure that blends exploration, crafting, building, and combat. Here’s what reviews say and what to check before choosing a platform.

Yes—Terraria is worth buying if you want a sprawling 2D sandbox adventure built around exploration, crafting, construction, and combat. It gives players room to set their own goals rather than steering them through a tightly authored story. Critics were broadly positive about the PC release, and Steam customer reviews remain overwhelmingly positive in the snapshot checked on October 8, 2026. Those signals support its staying power, but neither a decade-old critic aggregate nor changing storefront reviews can guarantee that its open-ended style is right for you.

What do you do in Terraria?

Terraria is a 2D sandbox adventure in which you explore, gather materials, craft equipment, build structures, defend your surroundings, and fight enemies. Steam’s description and tags place it across several familiar categories—sandbox, survival craft, multiplayer, and co-op—but the appeal is the way those activities feed into one another. Materials found during exploration can support crafting and construction, while combat and discovery give players reasons to venture farther.

The game is player-directed: you choose what to build, where to explore, and which goals to pursue. That freedom is a strength for players who enjoy making their own plans. It also means Terraria is a less natural fit if you mainly want a linear, tightly authored story that steadily directs you from one plot beat to the next.

What do reviews say about Terraria?

Critics: a positive but historic PC record

Metacritic lists Terraria’s PC version at 83/100, classified as “Generally Favorable,” from 29 critic reviews: 25 positive, four mixed, and none negative. This is a historic critic aggregate for the PC release, not a fresh review of every current version or platform.

#1 Best Overall
Two Point Hospital - Nintendo Switch
  • Build up a hospital from nothing to a masterpiece as you design the most beautiful – or functional – healthcare operation in the whole of Two Point County.
  • Optimise your hospital design to increase patient (and cash) flow, arranging corridors, rooms and waiting areas to your exact specifications.
  • Expand your hospital to multiple buildings as you look to get as many patients through the door as possible.
  • Place decorative and functional items around your hospital to improve its prestige, lower patient boredom, increase happiness and keep those end of year awards flowing in.
  • Features two great expansions, 21 hospitals and 119 very unusual illnesses!

The old reviews help explain the game’s critical appeal. IGN’s May 25, 2011 review, reproduced on Metacritic, argued that Terraria gives familiar sandbox play a stronger emphasis on combat and adventure. That framing remains useful: it is not just a place to build, but an exploration-and-combat adventure whose sandbox systems let players shape their own progress. GamePro’s June 1, 2011 review praised its depth and value, while The Escapist’s July 6, 2011 review compared it with adventure platformers. These are dated reactions to the game at the time, not assessments of the current build.

Players: very strong Steam sentiment, with a snapshot caveat

Steam’s customer-review labels are also strongly positive. In the snapshot accessed October 8, 2026, one Steam page view showed 1,501,680 all-language reviews, including 1,196,309 reviews identified as coming from Steam purchasers; both groups carried an “Overwhelmingly Positive” label. A separate view showed 600,370 English-language reviews at 97% positive and 8,782 recent reviews at 96% positive. Steam counts and percentages change, and the different page views should not be combined as though they were captured at the same moment. Treat them as dated storefront signals, not fixed ratings.

Is Terraria still good in 2026?

The available evidence points to an unusually durable game, though longevity figures deserve precise attribution. GamesRadar reported that Re-Logic shared an estimate of about 70 million copies sold for Terraria’s 15th anniversary in 2026. The same report attributed an average player-time figure of 101 hours and 18 minutes to the developer’s milestone statistics. These are developer-reported figures relayed by GamesRadar, not independently audited sales or a promise of how long a new player will spend with the game.

For continued support, GamesRadar quoted Re-Logic saying: “Your support allows us to keep going, keep expanding upon Terraria, without having to fall back to price increases or microtransactions.” That is a statement from the developer as quoted in the report, not a guarantee about every future release or purchase.

Is Terraria better solo or with friends?

Steam lists single-player, online co-op, and online PvP, so the storefront describes options for both solo play and multiplayer. The central appeal—exploring, crafting, building, and choosing your own goals—works as a solo activity; co-op gives you the option to share that sandbox with others. The available information does not establish current player limits or crossplay behavior, so check the specific platform’s current store and multiplayer details before buying for a group.

Which version of Terraria should you get?

Choose based on the device you will actually play on, then confirm the current edition and storefront listing for that platform. Terraria has appeared across PC, Mac, Linux, mobile, PlayStation, Xbox, and Nintendo systems, but a list of historical releases does not establish that every version is currently sold, updated identically, or feature-matched.

  • Check availability: confirm that Terraria is currently offered for your specific system and region.
  • Check controls and interface: a mouse-and-keyboard setup, controller, and touchscreen can make the same 2D game feel different. The available sources do not establish a current platform-by-platform control comparison.
  • Check multiplayer: if you plan to play with friends, verify the current co-op options, player limits, and crossplay support for the exact editions involved.
  • Check the purchase listing: compare the price and included content shown by your storefront at the time you buy; current prices and full edition parity are not established here.

Steam’s PC listing is the clearest source for the game’s described activities and its listed multiplayer modes. Other versions may suit your device better, but confirm their current storefront details rather than assuming feature parity.

Who is Terraria for?

Terraria is a strong match if you enjoy exploration that rewards curiosity, crafting and building, combat, and the freedom to invent your own next objective. Its critic record and Steam sentiment reinforce that recommendation, while its long-running popularity suggests that many players have found substantial room to play. If you need a guided plot to provide the main motivation, its player-directed structure may be a poorer fit.
