Tetris marked its 40th anniversary on June 6, 2024, with a year-long celebration spanning games, collaborations, tournaments and community events—not one single party. The Tetris Company said the game had sold more than 520 million units worldwide as of its 2024 announcement.
How Tetris began—and why the anniversary mattered
Programmer Alexey Pajitnov created Tetris in 1984, inspired by the puzzle board game Pentominos. Its seven geometric pieces are each made of four squares and fall in real time. The official history says the name combines “tetra,” meaning four, with “tennis,” Pajitnov’s favorite sport. The Tetris Company’s history of the game explains its origins.
In its June 6, 2024 anniversary release, The Tetris Company reported more than 520 million units sold worldwide. That is the company’s dated figure, not an independently audited or current sales total. The anniversary announcement also framed the milestone as a celebration of the game’s continuing appeal.
What Tetris did for its 40th anniversary
The company’s 2024 program combined updates and launches with licensed products and competitive play. Its announcement was a slate of activities for the anniversary year, rather than a claim that every offer or product would remain available afterward.

The Tetris Block Party brought several eras together
The official Tetris Block Party was a specific online event series, not the name for the entire anniversary campaign. The Tetris Company and Enhance announced it on July 16, 2024, with events beginning July 19. Across three weekends, Friday party nights and Saturday tournaments featured games including NES Tetris, Game Boy Tetris through Nintendo Switch Online, Tetris The Grand Master, Tetris Effect: Connected, Puyo Puyo Tetris 2, mobile Tetris and Tetris.com.

Ways to keep playing the legacy
The celebration also fits into a longer history of Tetris releases and adaptations. A January 2026 company retrospective describes Tetris Forever as a collection with more than 15 historic games and documentary material. It also describes Tetris The Board Game, made through a Spin Master collaboration, as a competitive game for two to four players. The company’s January 5, 2026 retrospective discusses both products, and the official Tetris site lists them among its games.
