You return to a shipwreck as a diver, search for evidence, connect clues and uncover what happened to the crew. Its appeal rests on atmosphere and emotional storytelling; its mechanics are deliberately light.
What kind of game is Thalassa: Edge of the Abyss?
Developed by Sarepta Studio and published by Team17 Digital Ltd, Thalassa: Edge of the Abyss is a single-player, first-person psychological drama set in 1905. It released on Steam for Windows PC on 1 August 2024. You play Cam, a deep-sea diver returning to the wreck of the Thalassa, while Bailey supports you from the surface. The goal is to discover what happened to the ship and its crew.
The game’s investigation is built around exploring the wreck and interpreting what its former crew left behind. You search expedition plans, photographs and wax-roll audio recordings, then link evidence in a mystery menu. Progress also means negotiating debris and using tools to clear blocked routes. Steam’s Adventure, Indie and RPG classifications are store labels; they should not be taken to mean the game has conventional combat or extensive role-playing systems. How does the investigation play?
Find and connect evidence
Looking for clues is the central activity. Documents, images and recordings provide pieces of the story; the mystery menu is where you bring related clues together. The structure favors observation and interpretation over complex puzzle-solving. A Hooked Gamers review excerpt, published via Metacritic on 31 July 2024, describes the clue-combining as light and cautions that players seeking hands-on gameplay and a higher challenge level may prefer another game. That is one critic’s assessment, not a universal measure of the experience. Metacritic critic reviews
#1 Best Overall
- For 1-6 Players. 60-90 minute playing time
- The Assault Units, the Krohns, will advance towards Zone 1, and once there, they'll attack the Heroes on the wall and try to break into the Citadel
- Gargohs, the Support Units, will advance towards Zone 2 and, once there, they'll hit all Heroes in the Quarter they face
- Molens, the Heavy Units, will attack directly from Zone 3 and damage all Heroes and buildings in the Quarter they face
- Each monster figure on the board will activate and perform their actions according to its rank. The Heroes must coordinate their actions well to share resources
Explore a wreck, not a battlefield
Navigation, atmosphere and access to new parts of the ship provide the physical side of the investigation. Official launch information mentions avoiding obstacles and using tools to unblock areas. The available descriptions emphasize exploration rather than combat, so players looking for action encounters or demanding mechanical challenges should set expectations accordingly.
What are the story and tone like?
The official description frames the game as a psychological drama about self-discovery, relationships and sorrow. Its mystery is tied to Cam’s former crew and the events behind the Thalassa’s end, giving the exploration an emotional purpose beyond collecting clues. Checkpoint Gaming’s 31 July 2024 review excerpt characterizes it as a grounded mystery with an emotional story of closure and grief; that is the outlet’s judgment, not a guarantee that every player will respond to the story in the same way. Is Thalassa: Edge of the Abyss worth playing?
It is a stronger fit if you enjoy narrative exploration, underwater settings and mysteries solved by gathering and connecting evidence. It is a weaker fit if you want sustained action, demanding puzzles or a high level of mechanical challenge. The central trade-off is clear: the wreck and its story are the draw, while the investigation asks for attention more than technical skill.
Steam’s listing showed 87% positive from 318 all-time user reviews when accessed on 8 October 2026, labeled “Very Positive.” This is a changing platform snapshot, not a permanent score or a substitute for judging whether the game’s slow pace and themes suit you. Steam store listing
Is Thalassa a horror game?
The sources describe it as a psychological drama and mystery, not as a conventional horror game. Its underwater setting and themes of death and loss may feel unsettling, but Steam’s content note says those themes are not presented graphically or violently. If you are deciding based on content, the emotional subject matter is the clearest consideration.
