The Steam version lists Vulkan-capable graphics hardware among its minimum requirements, while the developer documents an OpenGL 3 launch argument as a workaround for Vulkan-related startup failures. Work through the fixes below in order, starting with the safest checks.
Quick fix guide by symptom

Before troubleshooting: identify your copy
There are two relevant official PC distributions:
- Steam remake/version 2.0: released on March 11, 2025. Its Steam listing includes Steam-managed installation and file verification.
- Original itch.io build: the developer’s itch.io page lists older downloadable Windows builds, including versions 1.0.3.3 and 1.1.0.2.
If your copy came from a browser clone, repack, copied executable, or unofficial download site, do not download random DLLs or patches to make it work. Tampered files, malware, and missing dependencies can create symptoms that do not apply to the official game. Reinstall from Steam or the developer’s official itch.io page instead.

1. Check the PC requirements and graphics API
For the Steam version, Steam lists these minimum requirements:
- Windows 10 or later
- 64-bit processor and operating system
- 2 GB RAM
- A relatively modern dedicated graphics card
- Vulkan support
- DirectX 10
- 500 MB of available storage
These are minimum specifications, not a guarantee that every configuration will launch successfully. A computer can have enough RAM and storage but still fail if its GPU or installed driver cannot provide usable Vulkan support. Integrated graphics may work on some systems, but Steam specifically asks for a relatively modern dedicated graphics card, so do not assume that a 2D game will run on every integrated GPU.

To identify your hardware:
- Press Windows + R.
- Type
dxdiagand press Enter. - Check the System tab for Windows and 64-bit information.
- Check the Display tab for the graphics adapter and driver.
- Note whether the adapter is integrated or dedicated.
dxdiag identifies your GPU and DirectX information, but it does not prove that Vulkan is working correctly. Hardware may support Vulkan in principle while its driver or Vulkan runtime is outdated or damaged.
2. Update or reinstall the graphics driver
The developer specifically advises updating graphics drivers for launch failures and black-screen symptoms. Start with Windows’ built-in option:
- Right-click Start.
- Open Device Manager.
- Expand Display adapters.
- Right-click your GPU.
- Select Update driver.
- Restart Windows and launch the game again.
For a more complete installation, use the official driver page for your GPU manufacturer—such as NVIDIA, AMD, or Intel—not a third-party “driver updater.” If the crash began immediately after a driver update, rolling back or reinstalling the previous stable driver can also be reasonable. Microsoft documents updating, uninstalling, and rolling back display drivers in its display-driver troubleshooting guidance.
A driver update cannot add Vulkan support to hardware that lacks it. It can, however, restore a missing, broken, or outdated graphics API installation.

3. Force the OpenGL 3 renderer
This is the most important game-specific workaround. The developer documents --rendering-driver opengl3 for Windows PCs that fail because of Vulkan. It is not a universal crash fix.
For the itch.io standalone build
- Find the game’s actual
.exefile. - Hold Shift, right-click it, and choose Copy as path if that option is available.
- Press Windows + R, type
cmd, and press Enter. - Paste the executable path into Command Prompt.
- After the closing quotation mark, type a space followed by
--rendering-driver opengl3. - Press Enter.
Example:
"C:GamesThat's not my neighborThat's not my neighbor.exe" --rendering-driver opengl3The space before the argument is required. Keep quotation marks around a path containing spaces, and attach the argument to the executable—not to the Windows search box.
The developer’s documented format is:
"C:PathToThat's not my neighbor.exe" --rendering-driver opengl3If OpenGL launches the game, the original failure was likely related to Vulkan compatibility, its driver, or the renderer initialization. OpenGL will not repair corrupted files, blocked executables, damaged configuration data, or unsupported hardware. Steam may also expose different launch behavior from the older itch.io build, so do not assume that this exact manual command works identically through Steam.

4. Verify or redownload the game files
Steam
- Open Steam and go to Library.
- Right-click That’s not my Neighbor.
- Select Properties.
- Open Installed Files.
- Select Verify integrity of game files.
- Wait for the process to finish, restart Steam, and test the game.
Verification replaces missing or damaged Steam-managed files. It may not remove every user-created configuration file, so continue to the configuration reset if the crash persists. Steam’s general game launch guidance also recommends current Windows and drivers and closing non-essential software.
itch.io
Sign in to the itch.io account associated with your purchase and download the correct Windows build again from the developer’s official page. Extract it to a new folder instead of overwriting the old one, then test the fresh copy before restoring old saves or configuration files.

If the game crashes after a graphics change or its resolution becomes unusable, reset its configuration. The developer identifies this Windows location:
C:UsersNameAppDataRoamingGodotapp_userdataThat's not my neighborUse this safer procedure:
- Close the game.
- Press Windows + R.
- Enter
%APPDATA%Godotapp_userdata. - Find the folder for That’s not my Neighbor.
- Rename it to something such as
That's not my neighbor_backup. - Launch the game.
Renaming preserves a backup and lets the game create clean settings. It may reset graphics options and could affect local progress or custom data, so back up the folder first. If the game works, restore files selectively rather than replacing the entire new folder.

6. Check Windows Security and antivirus blocks
The developer says antivirus software can block the download or prevent the executable from opening. Open Windows Security > Virus & threat protection > Protection history and look for a quarantined or blocked game file.
Restore a file only when it came from the official Steam installation or Nacho Sama’s official itch.io page. If necessary, add a temporary exclusion for the trusted game folder, then remove the exclusion after testing. Do not permanently disable antivirus protection.

Overlays and monitoring tools can interfere with a game’s renderer or window. Temporarily close:

- Discord Overlay
- Xbox Game Bar
- GPU recording or monitoring tools
- Screen-capture software
- Third-party antivirus overlays
- RGB and hardware-monitoring utilities
- Overclocking software
- Remote-desktop or compatibility layers
Test after each major change instead of disabling everything permanently. If the game works only after closing one program, record that program and its version before contacting the developer. A Windows clean boot can provide a more thorough diagnostic test, but it is an advanced step and should not be the first response.
8. Test Windows compatibility and graphics settings, then reinstall
Compatibility troubleshooting
On Windows 11, run Start > Settings > System > Troubleshoot > Other troubleshooters > Program Compatibility Troubleshooter > Run. Microsoft provides additional instructions for older applications in its compatibility troubleshooter guide.

On a Windows 11 PC with multiple graphics adapters, open Settings > System > Display > Graphics. Add the game executable if necessary, select Options, try High performance, save, and restart the game.
For black screens, flickering, or display corruption, Microsoft also provides per-app controls to disable Optimizations for windowed games and Auto HDR. Treat these as targeted experiments, not guaranteed crash fixes. They are documented in Microsoft’s Windows 11 gaming graphics settings guide.
Reinstall cleanly
- Uninstall the game.
- Restart Windows.
- Reinstall it from Steam or the official itch.io page.
- Use a simple folder such as
C:GamesTNMNfor the standalone build. - Test before adding mods, ReShade, old configuration files, or custom content.
When software fixes are not enough
If the GPU does not meet the Steam listing’s graphics requirements, lacks usable Vulkan support, and the developer’s OpenGL fallback also fails, the PC may be incompatible with that rendering path. Buying more RAM or storage will not solve a graphics API limitation, and you should not buy a graphics card based only on a generic crash message. Confirm the GPU model, driver state, Windows version, and exact error first.
Windows 10 remains listed by Steam as a minimum operating system, but Microsoft ended normal support for Windows 10 on October 14, 2025. That does not by itself prove that the game cannot run on Windows 10; it means the operating system no longer receives Microsoft’s standard free security and technical support.

Contact support or request a refund
Before escalating, record:
- Steam or itch.io distribution
- Game version or build
- Windows version and 64-bit status
- GPU model and driver version
- The exact symptom or error message
- Whether the OpenGL launch argument changed the result
- Which file, configuration, and security checks you tried
Steam lists the developer’s technical support email as [email protected] on its technical support page. For an itch.io purchase that still cannot run after the documented Vulkan/OpenGL checks, the developer directs affected purchasers to contact itch.io support using the purchase email. That refund route is specific to itch.io; Steam purchases should use Steam’s normal support and refund process.
