The 10 Best Fallout 4 Graphics Mods in 2026

The best Fallout 4 graphics setup in 2026 is not a single mod or an all-in-one download. For sharper surfaces, start with Vivid Fallout – All in One; choose NAC X or True Storms for weather; and use PRC X only if you want ENB-based post-processing. The list below covers the strongest options by purpose, while also explaining which mods should not be combined.

This guide uses the current PC compatibility baseline available on August 7, 2026: Fallout 4 runtime 1.11.221 and F4SE 0.7.8. Always verify each mod’s files and requirements before installing it.

Before installing: Fallout 4’s 2026 compatibility baseline

Fallout 4: Anniversary Edition launched on November 10, 2025, including the base game, all six official DLC expansions, and more than 150 Creation Club items. The May 27, 2026 Creation Storage Expansion Update can clear installed Creations on first launch. Bethesda says players should restore their load order through the Creations menu or load a save made after the Anniversary Edition launched. Texture, weather, mesh, and ordinary ESP/ESM mods are generally less sensitive to runtime changes than F4SE DLL plugins. However, a Nexus tag saying “Next-Gen compatible” may refer to the older 1.10.980–1.10.984 runtime, not the current 1.11.221 Anniversary Edition runtime. Never assume that a DLL listed for 1.10.163, 1.10.980, 1.10.984, or 1.11.191 works on 1.11.221.

1. Vivid Fallout – All in One

Best for: A broad, performance-conscious texture upgrade.

Vivid Fallout – All in One replaces terrain and environmental textures across common wasteland surfaces and landscapes. It is one of the most practical first upgrades because the current files offer several quality levels rather than forcing every system to use the same texture resolution.

• 1K: the lowest VRAM requirement.
• Best Performance: smaller textures and lower performance cost, with the author’s warning that landscape transitions can look worse.
• Best Choice: designed to approach the look of the 2K version more efficiently.
• 4K: maximum detail, but explicitly warned to have a heavy performance cost.

Recent 2026 files also list support for Complex Parallax in newer Best Choice and LOD packages. Install only one main All in One option unless the author specifically instructs otherwise.

The current BA2-based packages avoid the usual loose-texture configuration problem. If you use an older loose-texture version, add this to Fallout4.ini:

Vivid Fallout is not automatically a huge performance hit. The 1K, Best Performance, and Best Choice archives exist specifically to reduce VRAM and performance costs; the 4K package is the version that carries the clear heavy-cost warning.

2. NAC X – Natural and Atmospheric Commonwealth

Best for: A comprehensive weather, lighting, color, sky, water, and atmosphere overhaul.

NAC X is a modular visual overhaul covering weather systems, lighting, sky effects, water, visual effects, and ENB-related support. According to its mod page, it requires no DLC beyond the base game. Its settings are managed through the NAC holotape, where you can adjust weather, fog, interior fog, climate, timescale, lighting, and related effects.

The commonly used NAC X – Legacy Edition dates from August 5, 2020 but currently carries Next-Gen compatibility tags. NAC X Revisited, which appeared in December 2025, is not simply a newer full replacement: its main file is a smaller compatibility-style weather plugin, with a January 2026 saturation add-on.

NAC X compatibility warnings

• Do not stack its complete weather system with another complete weather system without a dedicated patch.
• NAC changes fog distance and density, so exterior fog removers can conflict.
• It uses its own image spaces and disables normal LUT behavior. Fallout 4 Enhanced Color Correction and neutral-LUT mods are not interchangeable with NAC’s color system.
• It changes light sources and should not be casually combined with another lighting overhaul.
• When combining NAC with another weather mod, its page recommends NAC Hybrid Climate.

In particular, NAC X and True Storms are not a simple install-both combination. Use a compatible patch or hybrid-climate setup, or choose one weather framework.

3. True Storms – Wasteland Edition

Best for: Dramatic rain, fog, dust, lightning, radiation storms, and storm audio.

True Storms – Wasteland Edition 2.0.3 was uploaded January 11, 2026. It overhauls heavy rain, radiation rain, dust storms, fog, lightning, particles, storm textures, thunder, interior rain sounds, and optional feral-ghoul attacks during radiation storms. It covers the Commonwealth, Far Harbor, and Nuka-World.

The current release is marked compatible with the 2024 Next-Gen Update and Anniversary Edition. DLC options and patches are now handled through the installer’s FOMOD, so the old separate manual DLC procedure is no longer required.

Load order and configuration

True Storms is an ESM. Place it below the official game ESM files and above ESP files. That does not mean placing it at the absolute top of the entire load order.

The mod normally adds two holotapes:

• True Storms Configuration
• True Storms Weather Control

If they do not appear, particularly with an alternate-start mod, craft them at a Chemistry Station under UTILITY.

Version 2.0 introduced structural changes that can break older True Storms add-ons and patches. If an older add-on causes problems, the author advises remaining on version 1.4.3 rather than assuming every historical patch works with 2.0.x. Avoid removing True Storms from an established save without a backup; major weather and world-record changes can leave persistent effects.

4. A Forest

Best for: Turning the Commonwealth into a dense, overgrown forest.

A Forest adds trees, grass, and plants throughout the Commonwealth and also edits Far Harbor and Nuka-World. It requires every official DLC: Automatron, Wasteland Workshop, Far Harbor, Contraptions Workshop, Vault-Tec Workshop, and Nuka-World.

The main release is version 0.8, last updated July 14, 2021, although its Nexus page currently marks it as working with the Next-Gen Update. The mod states that it does not disable or alter precombines.

What to watch for

A Forest includes its own landscape textures from version 0.6 onward and generated distant-tree LOD. Combining it casually with Vivid Fallout or another tree overhaul can overwrite assets or produce mismatched distant trees. Loose Vivid Fallout textures may change A Forest’s intended appearance. The separate A Forest Tree Trim patch addresses trees clipping into buildings, roads, settlements, and other structures.

For an isolated misplaced tree with no available patch, open the console, click the offending object, and enter:

If you selected the wrong object, restore it immediately—before clicking elsewhere—with:

enable

Check the selected object’s RefID before using disable. The command can remove an important object if the wrong reference is targeted.

5. PRC X – PhotoRealistic Commonwealth 10

Best for: Cinematic color grading, film emulation, depth of field, bloom, camera controls, and ENB customization.

PRC X is an ENB preset, not a conventional ESP texture mod. Its Legacy Edition is version 10.0.0, last updated August 5, 2020. The preset describes thousands of possible looks built from film emulation, color grading, camera controls, post-processing, and HDR options.

• PRC X Lite: the simplest and highest-performance option.
• PRC X Regular: a general-purpose balance.
• PRC X Advanced: the broadest collection of camera, film, grading, and HDR controls.

Correct installation location

ENB files go in the Fallout 4 root directory—the folder containing Fallout4.exe—not only in Fallout 4Data.

1. Download the current Fallout 4 ENB binaries.
2. Copy only d3d11.dll and d3dcompiler_46e.dll into the game root.
3. Install the selected PRC X preset into that same folder.
4. If using NAC X, enable NAC X’s built-in ENB patch.

Do not install multiple ENB presets together. Before switching, remove previous ENB or ReShade files, including enbseries, reshade-shaders, dxgi.dll, enblocal.ini, enbseries.ini, reshade.fx, d3d11.dll, and d3dcompiler_46e.dll. Leftover root-folder files can make two presets appear to be active at once.

6. High FPS Physics Fix

Best for: Modern high-refresh-rate displays, frame-rate-related physics problems, and shorter loading delays.

High FPS Physics Fix is technically an engine and performance utility, but it belongs in a modern graphics setup because Fallout 4 ties several systems to frame rate. It addresses game speed, physics, animation, lockpicking, wind, Pip-Boy animation, loading times, and other timing-related behavior.

The page lists separate files for Anniversary Edition versions 1.11.159.0–1.11.191.0, Next-Gen versions 1.10.980.0–1.10.984.0, Old-Gen versions 1.10.130.0–1.10.163.0, and Fallout 4 VR. Because the current Steam runtime is 1.11.221, do not describe the listed 1.11.159–1.11.191 file as automatically current. Install it only if the mod page provides a file explicitly supporting 1.11.221. It also requires the matching F4SE and Address Library versions.

The configuration file is:

With a mod manager, edit the copy inside the mod’s virtual folder. You can place only personal changes in:

HighFPSPhysicsFix_custom.ini

If the fix does not load, inspect:

The log should contain a line showing that HighFPSPhysicsFix.dll loaded successfully.

7. Ultra Exterior Lighting

Best for: More convincing exterior light sources and cast shadows.

Ultra Exterior Lighting adds more than 1,500 shadow-casting lights to physical exterior light sources in the Commonwealth, Far Harbor, and Nuka-World. It also adjusts ambient and reflective lighting. To manage the cost, many lights switch between shadow-casting and non-shadow-casting versions based on distance from the player.

The current page lists version 1.04 and was updated September 5, 2025. It requires Automatron, Far Harbor, Vault-Tec Workshop, and Nuka-World; there is no non-DLC version.

Compatibility limitations

• It is not compatible with mods that alter existing vanilla exterior light objects or light sources.
• Mods that edit exterior cells should load above Ultra Exterior Lighting.
• Compatibility with mods that alter precombines or previs is not guaranteed.
• Scrapping physical light objects outside normal settlement contexts can cause problems.
• Occasional flickering can occur when lights switch between shadowed and non-shadowed versions.

The author states that Ultra Exterior Lighting does not break precombines or previs, but that does not make it universally compatible with every exterior-cell or precombine-altering mod.

8. Enhanced Lights and FX

Best for: Darker, more atmospheric interiors.

Enhanced Lights and FX overhauls interior lights, effects, ambient light, and mood. Its current page lists version 1.0, last updated April 6, 2018, and requires Automatron and Far Harbor. Although the page carries Next-Gen Update and Anniversary Edition compatibility tags, the actual mod file has not received a recent content update.

Reported issues include lights failing to emit light, problems in Vault 111, Vault 114, and Vault 95, conflicts with Pip-Boy flashlight mods, and problems with newer previs-related patches and lighting combinations. Treat those reports as real compatibility considerations rather than assuming the update tags guarantee a trouble-free installation.

Enhanced Lights and FX is not an ENB preset and does not replace NAC X or PRC X. It changes lighting records and meshes, so combining it with a weather or lighting overhaul can create conflicts involving light colors, brightness, fog, and interior image spaces.

9. Shadow Boost FO4

Best for: Recovering performance from dynamic shadows in a heavily modded setup.

Shadow Boost FO4 is an F4SE visual-performance utility. Version 1.8.2 was updated February 3, 2026 and is marked compatible with the Next-Gen Update and Anniversary Edition.

It dynamically adjusts shadow distance and quality to help maintain performance. The trade-off is visual: shadows may become less detailed or change noticeably as the target frame rate changes. Some ENB setups recommend disabling it when stable distant shadows matter more than a modest performance gain.

If shadows pulse, pop, or repeatedly change quality around a frame-rate threshold, disable Shadow Boost temporarily before diagnosing the ENB, weather system, or lighting overhaul. Shadow Boost and High FPS Physics Fix solve different problems and are not substitutes for one another.

10. Fallout 4 Enhanced Color Correction

Best for: A lightweight, vanilla-style improvement to color and contrast without an ENB.

Fallout 4 Enhanced Color Correction deepens shadows, increases contrast, and boosts selected colors while aiming to retain Fallout 4’s original visual style. The author states that it has the same performance impact as vanilla and requires no external executable.

The current page lists three files: F4ECC – 1.2, F4ECC – Original, and F4ECC – Gloom. All date from December 8, 2015, and the main page remains version 1.2.

F4ECC is a small color-correction mod, not an ENB framework or cinematic post-processing suite. Do not combine it casually with NAC X or an ENB. NAC uses its own image spaces and disables normal LUT behavior, while ENB presets such as PRC X control the final color and contrast balance themselves.

Which Fallout 4 graphics mods should you install together?

Do not install all ten simply because they appear on the same list. They overlap in several categories:

A sensible installation order

1. Start with a clean, backed-up profile and confirm whether the game is running runtime 1.11.221.
2. Install the required F4SE 0.7.8 and only DLL plugins with an explicitly matching file.
3. Choose one landscape or vegetation strategy: Vivid Fallout or A Forest.
4. Choose one main weather framework: NAC X or True Storms, checking patches before enabling both.
5. Add lighting changes only after checking cell, light-object, precombine, and previs conflicts.
6. Choose one final color solution: PRC X with ENB, or F4ECC without ENB.
7. Use High FPS Physics Fix only with a confirmed current runtime file; add Shadow Boost only if its changing-shadow trade-off is acceptable.
8. Test after each major category instead of enabling the entire list at once.

Keep backups before removing major world edits. Tree overhauls, weather systems, lighting records, and exterior-cell changes can leave persistent changes in saves or expose missing references after removal. A mod that appears visually harmless may still alter records that an existing save has already encountered.
