If you want a place to start with open-source games, this 2025 shortlist covers turn-based and real-time strategy, shooters, racing, survival, space exploration, and flight simulation. It is a dated set of recommendations from Sydney Butler’s February 7, 2025, Online Tech Tips roundup—not a current, tested ranking—so choose by the kind of play you want and check a project’s official page for current availability.
How to choose among these ten games
Start with genre, then consider pace and play style: whether you want a campaign or an open-ended session, solo or multiplayer play, and whether editing maps, modding, or simulation fidelity matters to you. Choose this turn-based high-fantasy strategy game if you want tactical turns, campaigns, and a roster of fantasy units. Online Tech Tips reported 17 official single-player campaigns, more than 200 unit types, and seven factions in its 2025 article; those figures are attributable to that roundup and were not independently refreshed here.

SuperTuxKart is the kart-racing option. The official project describes it as a free and open-source kart racing game. Use the project’s correct spelling—SuperTuxKart—not “SuperTuxCart,” which appeared in the roundup’s heading.

FlightGear
