For most Intelligence-focused PvE sorcerers, the best staff is the one with the highest Sorcery Scaling at your current attributes and upgrade level—not the one with the flashiest maximum. The Meteorite Staff is an exceptional early-game bridge; Academy Glintstone Staff is a strong midgame choice; Carian Regal Scepter is a reliable late-game main hand; and Lusat’s Glintstone Staff trades more damage for substantially higher FP use. The ranking below is an editorial guide, not an official Bandai Namco ordering, and favors practical PvE sorcery use over a single maximum-damage test.
How to choose the best Elden Ring staff for your build
When a staff casts a sorcery, its Sorcery Scaling is the key starting point for damage. Bandai Namco Entertainment America’s official advanced-stats guide explains that spell damage is based on the Sorcery or Incant Scaling of the casting tool. A staff’s letter grade or listed maximum alone therefore cannot tell you which is best for your character.

- Compare like with like: check Sorcery Scaling at your actual Intelligence, other relevant attributes, and upgrade level.
- Count the opportunity cost: a staff with high requirements may be a poor fit if those levels would be more useful elsewhere in your build.
- Include FP cost: higher damage can mean fewer casts per flask, especially with Lusat’s or Azur’s.
- Account for passive bonuses: some staffs strengthen a school of sorcery even when held in the other hand. A lower-scaling staff can still be useful as an off-hand bonus while your main hand casts.
- Match the staff to your progression: an unupgradable staff can be excellent early and still lose its place later to an upgraded option.
The reference’s Intelligence-only comparison places Demi-Human Queen’s Staff at lower Intelligence, Academy Glintstone Staff across 42–67 Intelligence, and Carian Regal Scepter from 68 Intelligence onward. Those breakpoints are reference guidance, not a universal rule for hybrid builds or every upgrade state.
The 20 best Elden Ring staffs, ranked
This practical PvE ranking weighs progression value, casting efficiency, specialized bonuses, and build fit. Several entries are niche tools rather than all-purpose main-hand picks; their place reflects when they can help, not a claim that every one out-damages the staff above it.

1. Carian Regal Scepter
A dependable late-game main-hand choice for a pure-Intelligence sorcerer. The reference lists 373 Sorcery Scaling at 80 Intelligence and +10, with no FP-cost penalty. It boosts full-moon sorceries and has the Spinning Weapon skill. The cited progression comparison favors it from 68 Intelligence upward among Intelligence-only staffs.
2. Academy Glintstone Staff
A strong, efficient mid-to-high-Intelligence option. The reference identifies it as the leading Intelligence-exclusive choice across 42–67 Intelligence and lists a 28 Intelligence requirement. Compare its scaling with your upgrade level before moving to another staff; the result depends on your actual stats.
3. Lusat’s Glintstone Staff
Choose Lusat’s when you want more damage and can afford more FP use. At 80 Intelligence and +10, the reference lists 413 scaling, compared with 373 for Carian Regal Scepter, but says Lusat’s raises FP consumption by 50%. That is a damage-versus-casting-economy choice, not an unconditional upgrade.
4. Meteorite Staff
An outstanding early-game staff with an 18 Intelligence requirement, a gravity-sorcery bonus, and a cited 138 Sorcery Scaling at its minimum Intelligence. Its defining drawback is that it cannot be upgraded, so it is best treated as an early bridge or an off-hand passive tool once upgraded staffs overtake its fixed scaling.

5. Demi-Human Queen’s Staff
A useful choice for characters still building Intelligence. The reference places it in the lower-Intelligence stage of an Intelligence-only progression, before Academy Glintstone Staff takes over in its cited 42–67 range. Check the scaling at your own stats and upgrade level rather than assuming a fixed handoff point.
6. Azur’s Glintstone Staff
Azur’s can support faster casting: the reference describes its effect as 40 virtual Dexterity toward casting speed. That convenience comes with a 20% increase to sorcery FP costs. Consider it when speed matters more than cast efficiency, and compare its scaling with alternatives before making it your main-hand damage staff.

- Collaborating with George R.R. Martin to create the ELDEN RING mythos has been a genuinely delightful experience and a source of wonderful inspiration. The team is working hard to ensure that the world of ELDEN RING will be a fascinating place for players to explore, filled with peril and wonder from its furthest reaches to its lowest depths. This is a FromSoftware title through and through, rich in fantasy and RPG action. We sincerely hope you look forward to it.
- Building the world of ELDEN RING with Miyazaki-san and his team was a treat! The graphics, mythos, and action-RPG gameplay will deliver an unforgettable experience. I can’t wait for people to see what ELDEN RING has in store for them.” Said George R.R. Martin.
7. Staff of Loss
A specialized option for invisibility sorceries. Its passive can make it worth carrying in the off hand while another staff casts, depending on the spell and setup. The reference does not establish a multiplier suitable for publication here, so treat the bonus as school-specific rather than assuming a particular percentage.
8. Prince of Death’s Staff
A hybrid Intelligence/Faith staff associated with death sorceries. It is relevant when your build already invests heavily in both attributes, but its high stat-investment demands make it an unfair comparison against pure-Intelligence staffs unless total attributes are held equal.

9. Albinauric Staff
A hybrid Intelligence/Arcane choice for builds that already commit to Arcane. It can make more sense in that context than in ordinary Intelligence-only sorcery; do not judge its suitability by maximum hybrid scaling against a pure-Int staff without matching the stats invested.
10. Carian Glintstone Staff
A school-focused candidate for Carian sword sorceries. Its value depends on whether those spells are a meaningful part of your loadout and whether the passive bonus outweighs the casting staff’s scaling. Compare the exact spell and setup in-game before using it as a general-purpose staff.
11. Carian Glintblade Staff
Another specialized Carian option, suited to builds built around glintblade sorceries rather than broad spell coverage. Its passive can make an off-hand slot productive, but a bonus to one school does not automatically compensate for lower scaling on every spell.
12. Crystal Staff
A focused choice for crystal sorceries. It is most compelling when those spells make up a substantial part of your rotation; for a mixed spellbook, a higher-scaling general staff may be more useful in the casting hand.

13. Rotten Crystal Staff
A specialized crystal-sorcery tool with a late-game acquisition context: the location reference places it near Elphael Inner Wall. That timing limits its value as a progression staff, though it may suit a focused loadout once obtained.
14. Staff of the Guilty
A niche staff for thorn sorcery setups. Evaluate it by the spells you actually cast and the stats you already have invested; its specialist role is more important than treating it as a universal Intelligence staff.
15. Gelmir Glintstone Staff
A hybrid option for builds that invest in both Intelligence and Faith. As with other hybrid staffs, compare it at your build’s real total attributes rather than lining up maximum figures from unequal stat budgets.
16. Staff of the Great Beyond
A hybrid casting option for builds that want both sorceries and incantations. Its appeal is loadout convenience, not a reason to assume it wins the Sorcery Scaling comparison for a dedicated Intelligence sorcerer.
17. Glintstone Staff
A basic general-purpose staff that can serve as a progression option if its scaling suits your current attributes and upgrades. Its ranking here reflects its lack of a standout specialization in the comparison, not a claim that it is unusable.
18. Astrologer’s Staff
A practical early-game staff for an Intelligence-oriented character. Replace it when a staff you can meet the requirements for and upgrade delivers better Sorcery Scaling or a more useful passive for your spell selection.

19. Carian Sorcery Sword
This weapon casts sorceries but is not a staff, so it is included only as a boundary case for players comparing casting tools. Bandai Namco’s August 27, 2026 version 1.17 notes say Intelligence scaling was changed to increase attack power of all damage types for the Carian Sorcery Sword; that note is not a staff-balance change.
20. Any staff that does not fit your build
A staff with a prominent passive, a high headline maximum, or an impressive letter grade can still be the wrong pick if your attributes do not support it, it is under-upgraded, or its FP cost disrupts your play. The best choice is the option that performs for the spells and resource budget you actually use.

When to switch from Meteorite Staff
Meteorite Staff’s cited 138 scaling at 18 Intelligence gives it unusually strong early value without an upgrade investment. Because it cannot be upgraded, it eventually stops improving while upgradeable alternatives continue to gain scaling. Use it until a staff you can upgrade wins at your actual attributes; it can remain useful in the other hand if its gravity-sorcery passive benefits the spell you are casting.
When a specialized staff belongs in your other hand
A staff’s passive can be valuable even when it is not the tool casting your spell. The reference describes specialist bonuses for gravity, invisibility, Carian sword, Stonedigger, and full-moon sorceries. This creates a useful two-staff approach: keep the stronger general scaler in the casting hand and hold a school-specific staff off hand when its bonus applies. Check the exact spell eligibility and in-game effect for your setup; do not assume every staff bonus applies to every related-looking spell.
Where to find several notable staffs
The location reference provides these broad destinations; it does not establish a complete route or all access conditions, so check the relevant in-game area progression before setting out.
| Staff | Location reference | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Meteorite Staff | Corpse by Street of Sages Ruins | Early option with fixed scaling and a gravity-sorcery bonus |
| Lusat’s Glintstone Staff | Sellia treasure chamber after defeating the relevant bosses | High damage potential with a 50% FP-cost increase in the cited comparison |
| Prince of Death’s Staff | Tower reached from the Nameless Eternal City | Hybrid Intelligence/Faith staff associated with death sorcery |
| Rotten Crystal Staff | Near Elphael Inner Wall | Late-game specialized option |
| Staff of Loss | Sellia balcony | Invisibility-sorcery specialist |
What changed in the latest cited patch notes?
Bandai Namco’s version 1.17 notes, dated August 27, 2026, mention a Carian Sorcery Sword Intelligence-scaling change. The cited note concerns that weapon, not a staff. It does not establish that staff balance has never changed, so check the current game version when comparing exact scaling values.
