The ten classics below come from Stuff critic Craig Grannell’s ranking, published 12 July 2026—not an objective or universal verdict. They range from an experimental 1958 demonstration to a demanding tennis simulation, so the best choice depends on what kind of match you want.

How to choose a tennis game for Wimbledon season
Start with the kind of play you want rather than treating the ranking as a single measure of quality. Arcade games favor quick rallies and easy-to-grasp controls; simulation-minded games ask more of your timing and positioning; motion-control and party games lower the barrier to playing together; and one pick turns tennis into an RPG-style adventure. For a direct Wimbledon setting, the contemporary option discussed below is TopSpin 2K25.
- For arcade pace: Virtua Tennis or Super Tennis.
- For motion-controlled accessibility: Wii Sports.
- For story and progression: Mario Tennis: Power Tour.
- For a simulation-leaning career: Top Spin 4, or consider modern alternatives if you have compatible hardware.
- For a Wimbledon venue in a modern release: TopSpin 2K25.

#1 Best Overall
- Swing onto the court for explosive action in the latest Mario Tennis game
- Combine topspins, slices, and other shots with new defensive maneuvers to outpace opponents
- Keep a rally going, build up your gauge, and unleash powerful Fever Shots
- Equip Fever Rackets to add effects to your Fever Shots like freezing the court or shrinking opponents
- Mix and match over 30 Fever Rackets with 38 playable characters to find your own strategy
-
Tennis for Two (1958; Donner Model 30 analog computer)
William Higinbotham’s oscilloscope demonstration is an early interactive tennis experience, not a conventional consumer game. Two players used controllers to time their hits and adjust return angles. It earns its place as a historical milestone: a glimpse of how a tennis rally could become a playable interaction long before home consoles.
-
Pong (1972; arcade)
Pong reduces tennis to paddles and a square ball, but its immediate controls make the central contest legible at once. Deflection angles change with contact, and rallies accelerate, turning a minimal rule set into a rising test of reflexes.
-
Match Point (1984; ZX Spectrum)
For a game of its era, Match Point aimed at a more realistic representation of tennis. Its fast play and shot timing that affects the return give it more tactical texture than the simplest arcade abstractions.

Super Tennis (1991; SNES)
Super Tennis combines varied shots with arcade-style rallies and dramatic diving returns. Grannell’s caveat is its demanding difficulty: the energetic play is rewarding, but not especially forgiving.

-
Virtua Tennis (1999/2000; arcade and Dreamcast)
This is the list’s easy recommendation for breezy arcade tennis: games move quickly, controls are intuitive, and eccentric training mini-games break up the matches. Choose it when immediate fun matters more than a deep simulation.
-
Virtua Tennis 2 (2001; arcade and Dreamcast)
The sequel adds slice controls and a year-based World Tour mode. Those additions offer more to learn and pursue, though Grannell finds it harder from the outset than its predecessor.
-
Mario Power Tennis (2004/2005; GameCube)
Character-specific moves, colorful themed courts, and power shots make this the deliberately exaggerated arcade choice. It is less about reproducing a straight tennis match than adding Nintendo-style spectacle to one.

Mario Tennis: Power Tour (2005; Game Boy Advance)
This tennis-and-RPG hybrid is the pick for players who want more than a sequence of matches. Its story, exploration, training, and mini-games give progression a central role, while tennis remains the activity at the heart of the adventure.

The tennis game in Wii Sports makes an accessible first step: players swing the Wii Remote while characters move automatically. That simplified movement leaves newcomers free to focus on the timing and gesture of a shot.
-
Top Spin 4 (2011; PS3, Wii, and Xbox 360)
Grannell’s simulation-leaning closer is praised for responsive controls, player movement, coaching, and career depth. It suits players looking for more deliberate tennis and long-term progression than a quick arcade match. Its listed platforms are older systems, so confirm that you have a compatible way to play before seeking a copy.
Modern alternatives with a Wimbledon connection
TopSpin 2K25: Wimbledon venue and online-dependent career
2K’s TopSpin 2K25 listing names Wimbledon among its Grand Slam venues. The game also appeared in Wimbledon’s official 2025 eChamps competition: its 2025 rulebook specifies a Wimbledon court for the open qualifier and grass settings in later rounds. That confirms its use in that competition, not the format of any subsequent edition.

There is an important distinction between its modes. According to 2K Support—published 4 April 2024 and updated 24 September 2025—Exhibition is offline and supports up to three additional local friends. TopSpin Academy teaches controls and positioning. MyCareer is single-player, but requires an online connection; World Tour, 2K Tour, and Online Exhibition are online modes. Check the current requirements before choosing it for offline career play.

TIEBREAK: officially licensed tour tennis
TIEBREAK: The Official Game of the ATP and WTA is another modern direction, built around official tour tournaments and a Career mode. In their 22 August 2024 launch announcement, the WTA and ATP said the game had more than 120 players and 90 official tournaments. Those are the organizations’ figures at launch, not independently audited counts for the current build. WTA Ventures Chief Executive Marina Storti said: “We are delighted to be collaborating with the ATP and NACON to bring fans an exciting new way to experience the thrills of top-class tennis.”
Other contemporary options
Stuff also points to Tennis Elbow 4 for realism and tactics, and describes Mario Tennis Aces as a more colorful arcade-and-adventure blend. These are editorial characterizations, not a claim that either is a better fit for every player.
Check platform and play requirements before buying
The ranked ten span an analog computer, arcade machines, ZX Spectrum, SNES, Dreamcast, GameCube, Game Boy Advance, Wii, PS3, and Xbox 360. The list does not establish current availability or backward compatibility for these legacy games. Match the exact game to hardware you own or can access, and verify compatibility for your region and console before purchasing. For TopSpin 2K25, distinguish the offline Exhibition option from MyCareer’s online requirement; for TIEBREAK, treat the WTA and ATP launch figures as dated announcement figures rather than a live roster guarantee.
Which one should you play?
Pick Virtua Tennis for fast, intuitive arcade matches, Wii Sports for gesture-based accessibility, or Mario Tennis: Power Tour for tennis wrapped in story and progression. If your priority is a more considered simulation, Grannell’s classic choice is Top Spin 4; if you want Wimbledon itself represented in a modern game, TopSpin 2K25 has the named venue, with the online condition on MyCareer worth checking first.
