For EA Sports FC 24 Ultimate Team, the best centre-backs are not simply the cards with the highest overall ratings. This ranking reflects a historical snapshot from the start of January 2024, on Title Update #6 after Winter Wildcards Team 2—not the current FC meta. It ranks one version per player, excludes Evolution-path cards, and does not set current coin prices or formal budget brackets.
How to read this ranking
“Meta” is a practical judgment about how a card performs in Ultimate Team, not an official EA category. Pace, acceleration type, height, strength, jumping, reactions, defensive PlayStyles, work rates, body type, passing, chemistry links and formation fit can matter more in play than the overall rating alone. Anticipate+ is a particularly valued centre-back PlayStyle+ in the cited guides; Block, Aerial and Intercept are also relevant.

The 15 most meta centre-backs in the January 2024 snapshot
-
Virgil van Dijk — 91 Winter Wildcards
The list’s top pick. The 91 rating identifies this specific Winter Wildcards card, not every Van Dijk version or his real-world ability. The source ranks this card first for Ultimate Team use.

-
Paolo Maldini — 93 Dynasties Icon
The highest-rated card in this ranking, at 93, but its placement at number two also illustrates why rating alone does not determine the order.
-
Lúcio — 89 Hero
This 89-rated Hero card takes third place. Compare its defensive attributes and PlayStyles with your preferred alternatives rather than treating the rating as a standalone verdict.
-
Vincent Kompany — 89 UCL Hero
The UCL Hero version is ranked fourth. The card version matters: this entry is not a general ranking of every Kompany item.

-
Carlos Alberto — 91 Icon
Carlos Alberto is naturally a fullback, not a centre-back. The guide includes his 91 Icon for his versatility as a wide centre-back option; consider the role and formation before using him in a central pairing.
-
Raphaël Varane — 88 Thunderstruck
The 88 Thunderstruck version occupies sixth place in the source ranking. Judge it against your squad’s chemistry and the specific defensive traits you need.
-
Rio Ferdinand — 88 Icon
This 88 Icon card is ranked seventh. Its overall rating matches several cards below it, reinforcing that the ranking reflects the guide’s broader assessment rather than a simple rating sort.
Rank #3
-
Ronald Araújo — 88 Radioactive
The guide praises this card’s pace, strength, jumping and defensive PlayStyles, while questioning its passing. That trade-off matters if you expect your centre-backs to initiate attacks with longer distribution.

Laurent Blanc — 88 Icon
Blanc’s 88 Icon version is ninth. Consider the card’s fit with your defensive setup and chemistry rather than assuming its ranking applies equally to other versions.
-
Marcel Desailly — 88 Icon
The 88 Icon card sits tenth. It is one of several 88-rated entries, so individual attributes and PlayStyles are more useful for choosing between them than rating alone.

-
Éder Militão — 88 Winter Wildcards
This Winter Wildcards version is ranked eleventh. The entry is specific to this card and the January 2024 selection, not a claim about every Militão item.
-
Kyle Walker — 86 Winter Wildcards
Walker’s 86 Winter Wildcards card is twelfth. Its lower overall rating does not by itself rule it out; assess the card-level pace, defensive tools and positional fit for your system.

Jules Koundé — 86 Trailblazers
The 86 Trailblazers version is ranked thirteenth. As with other cards in this list, the recommendation is tied to the named version and historical snapshot.

-
Presnel Kimpembe — 86 Triple Threat
Kimpembe’s 86 Triple Threat card takes fourteenth place. Compare the exact card’s defensive PlayStyles, physical profile and chemistry fit with the alternatives you own.
-
Sol Campbell — 88 Thunderstruck Icon
The 88 Thunderstruck Icon closes the ranking. The guide praises Campbell’s size and physical defending but flags his passing and weak foot as drawbacks, especially relevant if you rely on centre-backs to progress the ball.
How to choose for your squad and budget
The original January ranking does not divide its picks into budget tiers or establish prices. A separate Charlie INTEL guide published in July 2024 provides a cheap-player section and prices for its own late-cycle snapshot, but those historical values should not be treated as current market prices.
Recommended Free Tools
Without a shared, dated price snapshot, affordability is best judged against the market in your own game at the time you are buying. Start with the role you need, then compare the exact card versions you can afford:
- For recovery and pace: compare pace, acceleration type and any chemistry-style boost you intend to apply.
- For physical defending: weigh height, jumping, strength, reactions and Aerial PlayStyle against the opponents and situations you commonly face.
- For defensive reliability: inspect PlayStyles such as Anticipate+, Block, Aerial and Intercept, plus the card’s work rates and body type.
- For building from the back: check passing and weak foot as well as defensive traits. Araújo and Campbell are examples in this ranking where the guide notes a ball-playing trade-off.
- For chemistry and shape: verify links, formation fit and whether a versatile option such as Carlos Alberto suits the wide-centre-back role you intend to use.
These are useful comparison factors, not official EA criteria or guarantees of results. A card that fits your tactics and squad may be a better practical choice than a higher-ranked option that does not.
