The 2025 Report of Major Xbox Layoffs Was Followed by Cuts Days Later

A June 2025 report predicted major Xbox layoffs for the following week. The cuts began July 2, but the 9,000-job figure covered Microsoft overall—not Xbox alone.

The report was real, but its headline is now historical. Bloomberg reported on June 24, 2025, that Microsoft was planning substantial layoffs across its Xbox gaming division. The cuts began on July 2, 2025, although Microsoft did not initially disclose a final Xbox-specific headcount. The widely reported figure of approximately 9,000 jobs applied to Microsoft’s workforce overall, not Xbox alone.

What the original report said

On June 24, 2025, Bloomberg reported that Microsoft was preparing a major round of job cuts across Xbox. Managers reportedly expected “substantial” reductions, but the report did not establish an exact number of affected Xbox employees. Microsoft also did not publicly confirm the planned Xbox total at that stage.

The report described a broad Microsoft Gaming reorganization rather than a reduction limited to one studio. It came after several rounds of Xbox-related layoffs following Microsoft’s approximately $69 billion acquisition of Activision Blizzard in 2023. Bloomberg characterized the planned cuts as the fourth major Xbox layoff round in roughly 18 months.

Bloomberg’s original report was therefore a report of planned action—not a Microsoft announcement confirming that every detail had been finalized.

Why “next week” meant early July 2025

The original headline’s “next week” referred to the period around the beginning of Microsoft’s 2025 fiscal year. Microsoft’s new fiscal year began on July 1, 2025, a point when major reorganizations, budgets, and staffing plans commonly take effect.

Reporting at the time said the layoffs had been delayed until after the Xbox Games Showcase and the announcement of Xbox Ally devices. That explanation was reported rather than officially confirmed by Microsoft. In practical terms, the timing moved from the end of June into the first days of July.

Timeline: report, implementation, and later restructuring

Date What happened
June 24, 2025 Bloomberg reported that major Xbox layoffs were planned for the following week.
July 1, 2025 Microsoft’s new fiscal year began.
July 2, 2025 Deep reductions began across Microsoft Gaming and Xbox-related operations. Microsoft also announced a company-wide workforce reduction of about 9,000 employees.
After July 2, 2025 Project cancellations and further studio-specific effects became public, including the cancellation of Perfect Dark and Everwild.
July 6, 2026 Microsoft announced a separate restructuring, including changes across its gaming organizations. This was not part of the 2025 layoff round.

Sources for the July 2 developments include Bloomberg’s report on cuts across Xbox and the Associated Press overview.

Did the layoffs actually happen?

Yes. Bloomberg reported on Wednesday, July 2, 2025, that layoffs had begun across Microsoft’s gaming division. That subsequent reporting substantially confirmed the central prediction in the June 24 article: Xbox-related cuts were not merely a proposed future event.

However, “confirmed” needs to be used precisely. The July reporting confirmed that layoffs had begun and described significant reductions across gaming. It did not publicly establish a final Xbox-only total, nor did it verify every expectation contained in the earlier report.

How many employees were affected?

Microsoft’s broader July 2025 announcement affected approximately 9,000 employees worldwide, or less than 4% of its workforce. That number covered Microsoft as a whole. It should not be rewritten as “Xbox laid off 9,000 employees.”

Xbox and Microsoft Gaming represented only part of the total. Bloomberg described hundreds of gaming employees as affected, while Microsoft did not initially provide a separate Xbox-specific figure. The safest description is therefore “substantial but undisclosed Xbox-related cuts,” rather than an invented exact number.

Which games and teams were affected?

The clearest early project consequences were the cancellation of Perfect Dark and Everwild, both reported in connection with the July 2 cuts. The reductions also affected multiple Microsoft Gaming operations, including ZeniMax-related teams and European offices.

A layoff, a project cancellation, a studio closure, a divestiture, and a spin-off are different events. Reports and online discussions sometimes use those terms interchangeably, but they should not be treated as equivalent. A team can lose employees without its studio closing, and a game can be canceled without every associated developer being dismissed.

Likewise, a game appearing at a showcase does not guarantee that it will ship unchanged. Layoffs can lead to altered roadmaps, leadership changes, delayed releases, or cancellations, but each project needs to be assessed using its own reporting rather than assumed to be part of one universal cancellation wave.

Why was Xbox under pressure?

The layoffs were presented as part of a wider effort to control costs, streamline operations, and reduce management layers while repositioning Microsoft for long-term growth. Reporting also connected the broader July cuts with Microsoft’s continued heavy investment in artificial intelligence.

That does not prove AI alone caused the Xbox layoffs. The available reporting supports a combination of corporate restructuring, profitability pressure, post-acquisition integration, and strategic reprioritization.

Microsoft was also pursuing a broader distribution strategy, publishing more games beyond traditional Xbox hardware. The company had to integrate the much larger Activision Blizzard organization while managing Xbox’s console business, Game Pass, first-party development, PC publishing, cloud services, and mobile operations. Those pressures help explain the business context, but they do not establish a single cause for every individual job loss.

What did the cuts mean for Xbox players?

  • They did not prove that Xbox consoles were being abandoned. The layoffs alone did not establish the end of Xbox hardware, Game Pass, or first-party development.
  • The most immediate effects were on projects and teams. Players were more likely to see cancellations, delays, restructuring, or changes in publishing priorities than an instant change to Xbox services.
  • Not every announced game was automatically at risk. Projects already announced or in development needed to be judged individually.
  • Xbox’s strategy was being reshaped. The cuts were consistent with a business attempting to manage costs and distribute games across a broader range of platforms, but they did not by themselves define the company’s complete hardware strategy.

What was confirmed and what was not?

The separate Xbox reset in 2026

Microsoft announced another restructuring in July 2026. Its corporate communication described approximately 4,800 company-wide job eliminations, while official Xbox messaging described changes across Activision, Bethesda/ZeniMax, Blizzard, King, Mojang, and Xbox Game Studios.

This was a separate event from the July 2025 layoffs. It should not be added to the 2025 total or presented as one continuous round. Microsoft’s official statements are available through its corporate transformation update and Xbox’s reset announcement.

Bottom line

The June 24, 2025 report was substantially borne out, but the accurate formulation is narrower than the original headline: Bloomberg reported planned major Xbox cuts on June 24, and Microsoft’s gaming division began implementing layoffs on July 2. The approximately 9,000-job figure referred to Microsoft overall, not Xbox alone, and the final Xbox-specific headcount was not initially disclosed.
