The best horror game for you depends on what you want to feel: hunted and helpless, challenged in combat, unsettled by a story, or spooked alongside friends. Position Is Everything’s guide, published May 18, 2026, recommends games across PC, PlayStation, Xbox, and Switch, but its 2025-oriented title does not mean every pick was released in 2025. Use its selections as a genre-spanning shortlist, then check your platform and preferred scare level before choosing.
How to choose a horror game
Horror is not one play style. A resource-starved survival game, a narrative-focused psychological thriller, and a ghost-hunting session with friends can all be frightening in very different ways. Start with the experience you want rather than treating a single “best” label as universal.

- Choose a subgenre: survival horror emphasizes resource management; psychological horror leans on atmosphere and story; action horror lets you fight back more often; stealth horror makes evasion central; multiplayer horror adds social coordination.
- Decide how vulnerable you want to feel: some games put combat and tools between you and danger, while others build tension around hiding, escaping, or being pursued.
- Match the challenge to your comfort: consider difficulty options, clarity of objectives, and how much combat pressure you want. “Scare level” is subjective, and the guide’s medium, high, and very high labels are editorial estimates, not a standardized rating.
- Check the exact platform version: availability and features can differ by platform. For online play, verify crossplay, private-lobby support, voice chat, and group size before arranging a session.
- Think about the time commitment: a story-led solo campaign offers a different kind of experience from repeatable group sessions.
Survival horror and action horror
These picks are for players who want danger to come with decisions about fighting, resources, or escape. The balance between action and vulnerability varies, so choose based on whether you want to confront threats or avoid them.
Resident Evil 4 Remake
Position Is Everything recommends Resident Evil 4 Remake as an approachable all-round option. It is a sensible starting point if you want horror alongside action rather than a game built entirely around helplessness; the recommendation is the guide’s editorial judgment, not a universal ranking.

- Amazon Exclusive - 2 sided poster included in every game!
- Grace Ashcroft, an FBI intelligence analyst who is introverted and easily scared, representing a new type of character for the Resident Evil series. Grace will experience horror from the same perspective as the player as she learns to overcome her fears throughout the course of the story.
- For the first time ever in Resident Evil history, players will be able to freely switch between both first- and third-person perspectives throughout the game.
- An Anniversary to Remember: With March 2026 marking the Resident Evil series’ 30-year anniversary, Resident Evil Requiem marks its own milestone in the franchise.
- Pre-orders for Resident Evil Requiem are now open, with the bonus of Grace’s costume: Apocalypse. Please note that the picture weapon does not come with the costume, but it can be obtained in-game.
Dead Space
Dead Space (2023) is a sci-fi horror option for players who want combat in a threatening setting. TechRadar lists it for PS5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC, and describes its science-fiction setting and combat (TechRadar’s horror-game guide). Confirm the platform and edition you intend to buy: availability of a physical PS5 copy, its format, and stock depend on the current retail listing.
Amnesia: The Bunker
The guide recommends Amnesia: The Bunker for a stronger sense of threat. Consider it if you want tension built around vulnerability rather than an action-first approach.
Alien: Isolation
Alien: Isolation is another guide recommendation for players seeking a more intense threat. Its place on the shortlist makes it a better fit for someone who wants the pressure of being hunted than for someone looking for an easygoing introduction.

- A dark, enthralling 4-5 hour narrative to keep you hooked and guessing until the end. Gorgeous visuals as you traverse numerous and diverse environments, presented with a cinematic, film-like aesthetic. Ranged and melee combat with upgradeable weapons to help you survive your nightmarish journey.
- A stellar voice cast, starring Valerie Rose Lohman (What Remains of Edith Finch, Wolfenstein: Youngblood), Jonah Scott (Dying Light 2: Stay Human, Date Everything), and Aleks Le (Persona 3: Reload, Marvel Rivals, Ghost of Yotei).
- A beautifully dynamic and haunting soundtrack composed and performed by Jacob Noska, and Jonah Henthorne: members of the band Auric Echoes.
- The puzzles you encounter are more than your standard key hunt. Project Songbird rewards those with an eye for detail, making each puzzle a challenge of creativity and wits.
- The combat of Project Songbird offers a variety of approaches inspired by the classics of the survival horror genre. Melee and gunplay is slow and weighty, and ammo is incredibly scarce. However, combat isn't your only option, as you have a multitude of tools at your disposal to aid in sneaking past any creatures that wish to do you harm.
Psychological horror and story-led picks
For a strong story or an oppressive atmosphere, the guide points to Alan Wake 2 and Silent Hill 2. These are narrative-oriented options rather than suggestions for group play.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteAlan Wake 2
Position Is Everything highlights Alan Wake 2 for atmosphere and story. Put it near the top of your list if narrative tension matters more to you than co-op features or repeatable multiplayer sessions.
Silent Hill 2
The guide also recommends Silent Hill 2 for atmosphere and story. PlayStation describes its version as a PS5 remake of the 2001 psychological horror game (PlayStation’s editorial coverage). That platform-specific description establishes the PS5 remake context; check the store for current platform availability before buying.
Rank #3
- Cronos: The New Dawn is a brutal third-person survival horror where you fight for the future by salvaging the past. Burn monsters before they merge. Extract souls from the living. Adapt or die.
- Set in a grim world where Eastern European brutalism meets retro-futurist technology, Cronos: The New Dawn lets you experience a gripping story that straddles the line between past and future.
- The enemies you’ll encounter are nightmarish creatures, born from the remnants of humanity – defeating them will require you to make full use of your arsenal.
- The creatures you kill won’t stay dead for long. Fallen enemies can be absorbed by others - through a grotesque process called Merging - to become faster, tougher, and far deadlier.
- This physical edition of Cronos: The New Dawn comes with bonus in-game content and a set of collectible stickers.
Horror to play with friends
Multiplayer changes the source of tension: friends can make a frightening moment funnier, but successful play may depend on communication and coordination. Position Is Everything names The Outlast Trials and Phasmophobia as group-oriented recommendations. Before choosing one, confirm the current version’s crossplay, private-lobby, voice-chat, and group-size support for the platforms your friends use.
The Outlast Trials
The guide recommends The Outlast Trials for groups. It is a stronger match for players seeking shared horror than for someone who specifically wants a solitary, story-led campaign.
Phasmophobia
Phasmophobia is a multiplayer ghost-hunting game involving voice interaction, according to PlayStation’s editorial description (PlayStation’s editorial coverage). The guide includes it among its group picks; make sure its current platform and communication features suit everyone in your party.
Rank #4
- Reawaken a Classic – Resident Evil 4 preserves the essence of the original game, now reconstructed using Capcom’s proprietary RE Engine to deliver realistic visuals and additional narrative depth to the iconic story that was not possible at the time of the original release.
- Modernized Gameplay – The team from 2019’s Resident Evil 2 returns to build upon the series’ modern approach to survival horror. Engage in frenzied combat with the Ganados villagers, explore a European village gripped by madness, and solve puzzles to access new areas and collect useful items for Leon and Ashley’s constant struggle to survive.
- Overwhelming Hordes – Face hordes of rabid enemies that threaten to overwhelm Leon with even more diverse methods of attack than in the original release.
- Survive on a Knife’s Edge – Years of intense training have taught Leon new ways to use his knife, helping to even the odds against the unrelenting onslaught of enemies. By parrying enemy attacks, you can avoid debilitating damage and evade lunging enemies seeking to grab Leon and hold him in place. Make smart use of scavenged knives to deliver precise finishing moves on vulnerable enemies, and even use the element of surprise to quietly dispatch unsuspecting foes before they break.

Indie horror and other distinctive picks
The guide’s broader shortlist includes games from indie horror as well as survival and psychological horror. These titles offer alternatives if you want something outside the main action-horror or group-play choices.
Signalis
Signalis appears in the guide’s comparison table as one of its selected horror games. Consider it when browsing beyond the guide’s headline recommendations; use your platform’s store listing to confirm current availability.
Little Nightmares II
Little Nightmares II is another selected title in the guide. It gives readers an additional option beyond its larger survival and multiplayer examples, though the guide’s scare labels remain subjective rather than a guarantee of how frightening it will feel to you.

Labyrinth of the Demon King
PC Gamer identifies Labyrinth of the Demon King as a 2025 survival-horror dungeon crawler (PC Gamer’s horror-game guide). It is a useful example of a horror game actually identified as a 2025 entry, unlike titles that merely appear in a guide framed around what to play that year.
Silent Hill f
PC Gamer also highlights Silent Hill f among its 2025 horror choices (PC Gamer’s horror-game guide). That corroborates it as a 2025-oriented recommendation, not the release timing of every title in Position Is Everything’s list.

What “best in 2025” means here
Position Is Everything’s guide is dated May 18, 2026, even though its title is oriented around games to play in 2025. Its selections span survival horror, psychological horror, multiplayer and co-op horror, indie horror, and remakes or modern classics, with platform and scare-level labels intended to help readers filter options. Those groupings and intensity labels are editorial choices, not results from a standardized comparative test. The list is a recommendation guide, not evidence that every featured game launched in 2025.
