For most couples, Split Fiction is the best co-op game to start with. It is designed specifically for two players, keeps introducing new ways to work together, and delivers a finite story rather than an endless service-game commitment. If you want a relationship-centered adventure, choose It Takes Two; for a relaxed shared project, choose Stardew Valley; and for short, chaotic sessions, choose Overcooked! 2 or Moving Out 2.

This ranking weighs more than whether a game technically supports multiplayer. The strongest games for couples create meaningful interdependence, give both players something to do, encourage communication, and offer a progression loop that suits the way you want to spend time together. Platform availability, local multiplayer, online requirements, cross-play, and included downloadable content can vary by edition and hardware, so check the current store page before buying.

The 21 best co-op games for couples

  1. Split Fiction — best overall

Split Fiction is the strongest default recommendation for couples who want a modern, purpose-built two-player adventure. Hazelight designed it around co-op, and the campaign keeps changing its mechanics and settings as the two players move between science-fiction and fantasy scenarios. That variety helps the game avoid the repetition that can make longer co-op adventures lose momentum.

You can play through split-screen or online multiplayer, with cross-play on supported platforms. Friend’s Pass also lets one owner invite another player under the stated conditions, which makes it particularly convenient for couples playing online. It launched on March 6, 2025, for PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X|S, with a Nintendo Switch 2 version released later; verify the exact platform edition before purchasing from the official Split Fiction page.

    Sackboy: A Big Adventure – PlayStation 5
    • Face thrilling, unpredictable challenges as you explore distinctive hand-crafted lands through deeply immersive and expressive controls.
    • PERILOUS PLATFORMING EXPERIENCE - Explore here, there and everywhere as you utilize Sackboy’s cool, diverse move-set to face a huge variety of thrilling challenges, fierce enemies and startling surprises.
    • RE-STUFFED. RE-STITCHED. RE-ZIPPED - Sackboy returns to the big time stuffed with fresh moves and game-changing gadgets in an awe-inspiring and downright fun 3D adventure in this new, but familiar world.

Watch out: this is not a background game. Both players need to cooperate, pay attention, and adapt to new controls and situations.

If you are shopping for a physical PlayStation edition, Split Fiction PS5 is the most direct product search for this recommendation; confirm the regional listing and edition before buying.

  2. It Takes Two — best relationship-centered campaign

It Takes Two remains one of the clearest examples of a game built exclusively around two-player cooperation. Its story follows Cody and May, a couple caught in a fantastical crisis, while each level introduces connected abilities that require the players to combine what they can do. The result is a campaign where passing the controller back and forth is not enough: both people need to participate.

It supports couch co-op and online play through Friend’s Pass. EA lists it for PlayStation 4 and 5, Xbox One and Xbox Series X|S, PC, and Nintendo Switch. The frequent mechanic changes are excellent for variety, although players who prefer mastering one stable control scheme may find them demanding. See the official purchase information for the current platform options.

Best for: couples who want a story about a relationship and a campaign with a clear ending.

Watch out: the emotional premise does not make every scene gentle or universally suitable for children. The constantly changing abilities can also create a learning curve for non-gamers.

For couples who want a physical PlayStation copy, It Takes Two PS5 is a specific way to shop for the game. Online couples should check Friend’s Pass conditions first rather than assuming both people need to purchase a copy.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  3. Stardew Valley — best relaxed long-term game

Stardew Valley is ideal when the point is not to finish a campaign quickly but to build a shared routine. You can farm, fish, mine, craft, explore, meet villagers, pursue relationships, and plan around the seasons. One player can focus on crops while the other explores, or you can make every major decision together.

The game’s official multiplayer documentation explains that an existing single-player farm can be converted to co-op by adding cabins. Multiplayer limits and features vary by platform and version, so consult the current Stardew Valley multiplayer documentation before making a player-count or compatibility assumption.

Best for: couples who want a calm shared project that can last for weeks or months.

Watch out: it provides less directed momentum than a game made specifically for two. If one player wants a clear objective every session, the open-ended structure may feel aimless.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  4. Overcooked! 2 — best for frantic communication

Overcooked! 2 turns meal preparation into a coordination test. Players divide tasks, move ingredients, manage timing, recover from mistakes, and try to keep a kitchen functioning while the environment creates additional obstacles. Its short, replayable stages make it easy to play for twenty minutes or continue chasing better results.

The game is excellent at exposing how a pair communicates under pressure. That is also its central danger: collisions, missed orders, and time limits can produce hilarious teamwork or genuine irritation. Research examining cooperative games has used Overcooked as a useful example of interdependent teamwork, but that does not mean every couple will find its pressure relaxing.

Best for: couples who enjoy noisy coordination, quick restarts, and laughing at failed plans.

Watch out: do not market it to yourselves as a universally cozy game. If either player dislikes timers or hectic controls, try Unravel Two or Untitled Goose Game instead.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  5. Unravel Two — best gentle puzzle-platformer

In Unravel Two, two Yarnys are connected by a thread and must use their relationship to move through the environment. Players support one another, swing, climb, solve environmental puzzles, and work out how to move as a pair. It can also be played solo, but local co-op is where its central idea becomes most apparent.

Compared with Overcooked! 2 or Cuphead, its pace is more forgiving. That makes it a strong choice when one person is experienced with games and the other is still learning movement and timing.

Best for: mixed-skill couples who want cooperation without constant time pressure.

Watch out: it is still a platformer, so some sections require coordinated movement. Do not expect the game to be entirely effortless.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  6. Portal 2 — best for logical problem-solving

The co-op campaign in Portal 2 asks two players to solve environmental puzzles using portals, momentum, timing, and careful observation. Its best moments come from explaining an idea, testing it, discovering why it failed, and finally seeing the solution work.

This is a particularly good couples game when you prefer conversation to reflexes. It also rewards giving your partner room to experiment. Avoid looking up solutions too quickly, and resist solving every puzzle for the other person; the discovery is the main shared activity.

Best for: couples who enjoy logic, experimentation, and talking through a problem.

Watch out: it is an older game, so verify current availability, controller support, and local or online co-op options for your specific platform.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

    • Overcooked! All you can eat contains a features to allow as many players as possible to join in the food frenzy! Scalable UI, dyslexia friendly text and Color blindness options are all available.
  7. Baldur’s Gate 3 — best deep RPG

Baldur’s Gate 3 gives couples a large shared campaign filled with exploration, dialogue, turn-based combat, character building, and decisions that can change what happens next. It is less about completing identical objectives and more about negotiating what your party should do, which characters to trust, and how much risk to take.

That freedom is a major strength for couples who enjoy discussing choices. It also requires more coordination than a short party game: agree on who controls which character, whether either player can make major story decisions alone, how you will handle save files, and when you will schedule sessions. Multiplayer and split-screen details vary by platform and version, so check current platform documentation; the game’s platform overview is a useful starting point at Baldur’s Gate 3.

Best for: couples who want a campaign that can occupy many sessions and produce constant conversation.

Watch out: it is complex, lengthy, mature-rated, and not a good choice if you want a quick game that can be picked up without remembering previous decisions.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  8. Minecraft Dungeons — best approachable action RPG

Minecraft Dungeons offers dungeon-crawling combat and loot without asking players to maintain a full survival sandbox. Its familiar visual style, straightforward objectives, and manageable action make it a useful bridge for a player who is new to action RPGs.

Couples can fight together, collect equipment, and gradually improve their characters without needing to understand an enormous skill tree immediately. Microsoft’s multiplayer and cross-platform support documentation explains account and cross-platform considerations that may apply to particular console combinations.

Best for: couples who want accessible combat and loot rather than farming or a large traditional RPG.

Watch out: check the current edition, account requirements, and cross-platform support for your devices before starting an online game.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  9. Moving Out 2 — best comedic physics teamwork

Moving Out 2 makes furniture removal into a logistics puzzle. Players carry objects, divide jobs, improvise around obstacles, and try to complete objectives while physics turns sensible plans into comic disasters. It is a natural companion to Overcooked! 2 for couples who enjoy short tasks and shared failure more than a serious narrative.

Best for: couples who want quick local sessions and a reason to laugh at the screen.

Watch out: the humor comes from imprecision and chaos. If you want exact controls or a story with emotional stakes, choose something else on this list.

  10. Luigi’s Mansion 3 — best light spooky couch co-op

Luigi’s Mansion 3 includes a two-player story mode in which one player controls Luigi and the other controls Gooigi. That pairing makes the game approachable: the characters have related but distinct roles, and the light spooky-comedy tone is easier to share with a mixed-skill player than a demanding combat game.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

It also includes larger multiplayer modes, but couples specifically looking for a campaign should select the story mode rather than assuming every mode works the same way. Verify the exact Switch configuration and whether both players need separate controllers.

Best for: couples who want colorful Nintendo couch co-op with exploration, puzzles, and gentle scares.

Watch out: local play setup depends on the controllers you have available.

  11. Super Mario Bros. Wonder — best flexible platforming

Super Mario Bros. Wonder combines familiar side-scrolling platforming with unpredictable Wonder Flower transformations. It works well for short couch sessions because the objectives are immediately understandable and players can jump in without studying a complex ruleset.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Its flexible character choices can help when one player is much more experienced than the other. Even so, multiplayer platforming can become hectic: players may bump into one another, lose track of the action, or turn a simple jump into a group mistake.

Best for: couples who want colorful, familiar couch co-op in short bursts.

Watch out: it is more physically chaotic than its cheerful presentation suggests, particularly when skill levels differ.

  12. Cuphead — best difficult shared challenge

Cuphead is a two-player action game built around boss patterns, timing, repetition, and learning from failure. The challenge is not a minor feature to tolerate; it is the entire structure. Each attempt teaches you something, and a victory after repeated practice can feel like a genuine joint achievement.

Best for: couples who enjoy difficult games and can treat failure as part of the session.

    • The intergalactic adventurers are back with Ratchet & Clank: Rift apart. Help them stop a robotic Emperor intent on conquering cross-dimensional worlds, with their own universe next in line.
    • Built from the ground up by acclaimed studio insomniac games, go above and beyond with the mind-blowing speed and immersive features of the PS5 Console.
    • Brand-new haptic feedback and adaptive trigger Technology creates astonishing physical sensations, bringing in-game actions to life in your hands via the dual sense wireless Controller.

Watch out: it is a poor default recommendation for anyone seeking relaxation, gentle progression, or a story-first experience. Agree in advance on how many attempts or how long you want to play.

  13. Lovers in a Dangerous Spacetime — best tightly coordinated arcade action

Lovers in a Dangerous Spacetime puts the players aboard a shared ship and asks them to operate different stations. Someone may need to steer, another player may handle weapons or defenses, and responsibilities can change rapidly as threats appear.

The design creates clear interdependence: you cannot simply play two separate games beside one another. You need to communicate, prioritize, and move around the ship at the right moment.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Best for: couples who enjoy switching roles and communicating under pressure.

Watch out: the pace can become demanding, especially when both players are still learning which station matters most.

  14. A Way Out — best cinematic two-player story

A Way Out is structured specifically for two players and uses split-screen presentation to show each character’s situation at the same time. Its asymmetric scenes make the players feel like partners in one story rather than two people independently progressing through a multiplayer game.

It is a natural choice after It Takes Two or Split Fiction if you want another finite Hazelight-style co-op adventure. The tone is more mature and the structure more linear, however, so it should not be presented as a family-friendly replacement for those games.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Best for: couples who want a cinematic story with a fixed ending and two-player-only structure.

Watch out: its mature tone and linear design will not suit everyone.

  15. Sea of Thieves — best ongoing shared-world adventure

Sea of Thieves is a strong fit for couples who want to create their own stories rather than follow one private campaign. You can sail, complete voyages, pursue story-focused content, and decide what kind of crew you want to be. A session might produce a carefully planned expedition, an unexpected encounter, or an amusing escape from another crew.

The official Sea of Thieves player guide describes its game modes and shared-world structure. Check current platform and service information before buying because online features, supported platforms, and the available content can change.

Free tools Windows power users keep installed

    One-click scans. No signup required.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Best for: couples who want an ongoing online hobby with emergent stories.

Watch out: other players and open-ended goals make it much less predictable than a private two-player campaign.

  16. Grounded — best survival-crafting adventure

Grounded shrinks its players into a backyard filled with resources, hazards, insects, building materials, and places to explore. Couples can gather supplies, improve a base, fight creatures, and decide together which expedition to attempt next.

It works especially well when both players enjoy planning: one person can improve the base while the other gathers materials or scouts a new area. The shared survival systems give the campaign a stronger sense of purpose than a collection of disconnected missions.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Best for: couples who like crafting, exploration, base-building, and gradually overcoming a hostile environment.

Watch out: resource management and combat make it more demanding than a party game. Confirm current cross-platform and local-play details for your intended devices.

  17. Diablo IV — best repeatable combat and builds

Diablo IV suits couples who want to keep returning to the same game, improve characters, collect equipment, and experiment with builds. Its shared-world design includes social hubs, public events, and party play, while players can also pursue parts of the game more independently. Blizzard’s feature overview explains the shared-world approach.

The game gives each player room to develop a character while still providing a reason to fight together. That makes it less dependent on solving every action as a pair than Overcooked! or Lovers in a Dangerous Spacetime.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Best for: couples who want repeatable combat, character builds, seasonal progression, and a long-term online game.

Watch out: it is a mature online service game. Current account, platform, subscription, and seasonal-content requirements should be checked before purchase.

  18. LEGO Star Wars: The Skywalker Saga — best low-pressure franchise co-op

LEGO Star Wars: The Skywalker Saga combines exploration, light combat, collectibles, puzzles, and familiar franchise humor. The LEGO format is forgiving enough for mixed-skill couples, while the large collection of Star Wars stories gives you plenty of material without requiring the precision of a difficult action game.

It is a good choice when you want couch co-op that feels substantial but not emotionally or mechanically demanding. Players can explore at their own pace and return to areas for collectibles rather than treating every encounter as a high-stakes challenge.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Best for: couples who want accessible couch play and a recognizable world.

Watch out: its lighter structure may feel too simple for couples looking for deep character builds or serious strategic choices.

  19. Untitled Goose Game — best silly short sessions

Untitled Goose Game lets two players control mischievous geese and work through objectives using stealth, environmental interaction, and sheer nuisance. The cooperative mode is low-stakes and funny, making it easy to recommend when you want something playful rather than a long commitment.

The Last of Us Part I – PlayStation 5
    • Enhanced visuals: Completely rebuilt from the ground up using Naughty Dog’s latest PS5 engine technology to improve every visual detail, The Last of Us experience has been faithfully enhanced with more realistic lighting and atmosphere, more intricate environments and creative reimaginings of familiar spaces.
    • Fast loading: Initial loading times are near instant, and seamless after the first instance thanks to the PS5 console’s SSD – so you can pick up where you left off in the story and load specific encounters and chapters more quickly.
    • Haptic feedback: DualSense wireless controller haptic feedback support for every weapon elevates combat encounters, and environments are brought to life through DualSense wireless controller haptic sensations of subtle falling rain, the crunch of stepping on snow and more.
    • Adaptive triggers: All The Last of Us iconic weapons, including Joel’s revolver and Ellie’s bow, now deliver dynamic DualSense wireless controller trigger resistance and kickback on firing for deeper combat immersion.
    • 3D Audio: Designed to make use of the PS5 console’s Tempest 3D AudioTech, Naughty Dog’s newly upgraded audio engine delivers richer soundscapes, bigger explosive moments and more visceral gameplay through compatible stereo headphones (analogue or USB) or TV speakers.

It is particularly good for couples who do not want to learn a combat system or remember a complicated plot. You can experiment, cause trouble, and stop after a short session without feeling that you have abandoned a major campaign.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Best for: couples who want humor, low pressure, and compact co-op sessions.

Watch out: its relatively small scope means it is better as a focused experience than as your only long-term co-op game.

  20. Human: Fall Flat — best physics-puzzle improvisation

Human: Fall Flat builds its puzzles around deliberately awkward movement and unpredictable physics. Players pull, climb, carry, fling, and experiment through environmental levels, often finding an unexpected route after the intended plan fails.

The loose controls are not a defect to overlook; they are the source of much of the game’s comedy. A couple that enjoys improvising will get more from it than a couple seeking precise platforming.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Best for: couples who enjoy experimentation, slapstick failure, and solving problems without a single obvious method.

Watch out: the same physics that create funny moments can frustrate players who want reliable control.

  21. Keep Talking and Nobody Explodes — best pure communication game

Keep Talking and Nobody Explodes is built around an asymmetric task. One player handles a virtual bomb while the other consults a manual and communicates the correct instructions. The challenge is not simultaneous action so much as describing symbols, listening accurately, asking precise questions, and staying organized under a time limit.

It is an excellent short-session game and a useful change of pace from two players holding controllers and looking at the same information. For the best experience, keep the manual with the person who is not operating the bomb and agree to speak clearly rather than shouting guesses.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Best for: couples who want communication itself to be the game.

Watch out: timed instructions are stressful for some players. It is not ideal if either person dislikes reading aloud or making decisions under pressure.

How to choose the right co-op game for your relationship

Choose the commitment level first

  • One evening: Moving Out 2, Untitled Goose Game, Keep Talking and Nobody Explodes, or Overcooked! 2.
  • A finite campaign: Split Fiction, It Takes Two, A Way Out, or Unravel Two.
  • A long-term shared hobby: Stardew Valley, Baldur’s Gate 3, Grounded, Sea of Thieves, or Diablo IV.

Match the game to your tolerance for pressure

For calm play, start with Stardew Valley, Unravel Two, LEGO Star Wars: The Skywalker Saga, or Untitled Goose Game. For high-pressure teamwork, choose Overcooked! 2, Lovers in a Dangerous Spacetime, or Keep Talking and Nobody Explodes. For deliberate difficulty, choose Cuphead.

Decide whether you want equal roles or different roles

Games such as Split Fiction, It Takes Two, and Unravel Two make both players part of the same active problem. Keep Talking and Nobody Explodes gives the players completely different information and responsibilities. Sea of Thieves and Grounded allow couples to divide work more freely. Think about whether you want to do the same kind of activity together or operate as a small team with separate jobs.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Platform, purchase, and setup notes

Before buying, check four things on the current platform or storefront page:

  1. Local or online support: A game may support multiplayer but not on the edition or hardware you own.
  2. Cross-play: Do not assume that PC, PlayStation, Xbox, and Nintendo players can join the same session.
  3. Online-service requirements: Console online play, account setup, and service subscriptions can vary by platform.
  4. Edition and downloadable content: Bundles may include different DLC, while physical and digital editions can have different availability by region.

Split Fiction and It Takes Two are unusually convenient for online couples because Friend’s Pass can allow one owner to invite the other under the applicable conditions. That does not automatically mean every setup requires only one purchase, so check the current EA support information for Friend’s Pass and platform requirements.

For Nintendo couch co-op, check how many controllers your console bundle includes. If you choose Luigi’s Mansion 3 or Super Mario Bros. Wonder and need another set of compatible controllers, a Nintendo Switch Joy-Con controller pair may be useful, but it is not necessary for every Switch configuration.

Basic troubleshooting before blaming the game

When a co-op game crashes, refuses to connect, or fails to detect the second player, use this order:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Confirm that both players are using the correct edition and that the game is updated.
  2. Check whether the selected mode is local co-op, online co-op, or cross-play; these are not interchangeable.
  3. Reconnect controllers, assign each controller to the intended user profile, and restart the game after doing so.
  4. For online play, confirm both players are signed into the required platform or publisher accounts and that privacy settings permit multiplayer.
  5. Check the game’s current support page for maintenance, known issues, regional restrictions, or platform-specific requirements.
  6. If the issue is limited to a Windows PC, update the operating system and graphics drivers, verify the game files through the storefront, and close overlays or background applications before trying again.

A cleanup or repair utility should not be treated as a guaranteed fix for a particular game. Start with the game developer’s and platform holder’s support instructions, especially before paying for third-party software.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the best co-op game for couples overall?

Split Fiction is the best overall starting point because it is designed specifically for two players, supports local and online play, and keeps changing its mechanics and settings. Choose It Takes Two instead if a relationship-centered story matters more to you.

What is the best relaxing co-op game for couples?

Stardew Valley is the best relaxed long-term choice because couples can farm, fish, explore, craft, and plan at their own pace. Unravel Two and Untitled Goose Game are better for shorter, more directed sessions.

Which couples co-op games are good for beginners?

Start with Unravel Two, Luigi’s Mansion 3, LEGO Star Wars: The Skywalker Saga, or Minecraft Dungeons. They provide clear goals and approachable controls without demanding the precision of Cuphead or the multitasking of Overcooked! 2.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What is the best co-op game for couples who dislike combat?

Try Stardew Valley, Portal 2, Unravel Two, Moving Out 2, Untitled Goose Game, or Keep Talking and Nobody Explodes. Each focuses more on planning, puzzles, communication, or playful interaction than on fighting.

Do both people need to buy Split Fiction or It Takes Two for online play?

Not necessarily. Both games use Friend’s Pass systems that may allow one owner to invite the other under specific conditions. Check the current EA support and platform requirements before purchasing, because eligibility and setup can depend on the platform and edition.

The Bottom Line

Start with Split Fiction for the best all-around two-player adventure. Pick It Takes Two for a relationship-centered campaign, Stardew Valley for a relaxed shared routine, Portal 2 for thoughtful puzzles, Cuphead for a hard-earned challenge, or Keep Talking and Nobody Explodes when communication is the main event. The right choice depends less on genre than on how much time, pressure, and coordination you both want from the session.
