The most reliable way to find an Ancient City in Minecraft is to search beneath a large mountain or high plateau until you reach the Deep Dark, then explore the surrounding cavern system carefully. Ancient Cities generate underground in the Overworld, inside large Deep Dark caverns. Mountains improve your odds, but no surface biome guarantees that a city exists below it.

If cheats are enabled, the fastest method is /locate structure minecraft:ancient_city. In survival, preparation and careful movement matter more than digging quickly: a Deep Dark can contain sculk shriekers, and repeated activations can summon the Warden.

The quickest method: use the locate command

With cheats enabled, or with the necessary command permissions on a multiplayer server, run:

/locate structure minecraft:ancient_city

This command is used in both current Java and Bedrock command formats covered by the available documentation. It searches for the nearest Ancient City in the current dimension and returns coordinates if an eligible structure exists.

Travel to the coordinates normally, or use teleportation if that fits your world’s rules. A locate result only identifies the structure; it does not make the destination safe. Ancient Cities can still contain sculk shriekers, Darkness, and a Warden.

If the command does not work

  • Confirm that cheats are enabled or that you have command permission.
  • Run it in the Overworld. Ancient Cities are not structures you can locate in the Nether or End.
  • Use command autocomplete to check the exact structure identifier supported by your installed edition and version.
  • Make sure the world version supports Ancient Cities. They were added in the 1.19 Wild Update.
  • If the game reports that no structure was found, try a different eligible area or confirm that the command was entered in the correct dimension.

Enabling cheats can change advancement or achievement eligibility depending on the edition, platform, and world settings, so consider that before turning them on in a long-running survival world.

How to find an Ancient City in survival mode

1. Start near substantial mountain terrain

Begin your search beneath a major mountain range, jagged peaks, snowy slopes, or a high plateau. Mojang’s Ancient City guidance recommends mountainous areas because the Deep Dark is more likely to generate below terrain with low erosion values. Flat plains, beaches, and ocean shores are generally less promising starting points.

This is a probability clue, not a guarantee. Minecraft generates worlds procedurally, so a mountain may have no Ancient City beneath it, while a city can sometimes be found in an unexpected location. If one mountain range fails, move to another large range or plateau rather than digging randomly beneath the same hill.

2. Prepare before going underground

An Ancient City expedition is more dangerous than an ordinary cave trip. Bring enough equipment to survive a long detour and to retreat without mining yourself into a dead end.

  • Wool blocks or wool carpets: Use them to create quieter paths and reduce vibration transmission from actions such as walking, placing blocks, opening containers, and breaking blocks.
  • Durable armor: Wear your best practical armor, but do not bring irreplaceable equipment unless you are prepared to risk it.
  • Food: Carry a strong supply for healing and sprinting during the approach and escape.
  • Several pickaxes: A city may be far from your entry point, and emergency digging consumes tools quickly.
  • Building blocks: Use these for bridges, cover, markers, and emergency escape routes.
  • Water bucket: Useful in many cave situations, although its usefulness depends on the terrain and edition mechanics. Do not rely on it as a universal answer to the Warden.
  • Controlled lighting: Torches or another light source help with navigation, but placing blocks and moving around can create vibrations, so avoid treating the city like an ordinary brightly lit cave.
  • A recovery plan: Mark the route, leave spare supplies nearby, and consider storing valuable items before entering the Deep Dark.

For players who want a general physical reference while preparing for dangerous exploration, Minecraft: Guide to Survival (Updated) is an optional official Minecraft survival guide. It is a broad survival reference, not a source of current, edition-specific Ancient City coordinates, so it should supplement—not replace—the in-game search method.

3. Find the Deep Dark

Do not tunnel downward at random. Mojang specifically warns that Ancient Cities are built in large caverns and advises against digging straight down. Instead, look for a deep cave system and explore laterally through it.

The key clue is the Deep Dark biome. Its sculk-covered floor and walls may include:

  • Sculk blocks
  • Sculk veins
  • Sculk catalysts
  • Sculk sensors
  • Sculk shriekers

Finding sculk means you have reached the right kind of environment, but it does not prove that an Ancient City is nearby. Search the surrounding Deep Dark and adjacent large caverns. A small patch of sculk may be separate from any city.

4. Explore around the cavern, not straight through the floor

Once you find the Deep Dark, slow down. Follow the edges of the cavern and maintain a clear route back to your entrance. Use wool to make quiet walkways or to isolate areas where you need to work. Place visual markers in safe locations so you can retrace your route without wandering deeper into the biome.

An Ancient City is much larger and more architectural than an isolated Deep Dark patch. Look for long corridors, ruined city-like structures, soul-related lighting, wool-lined areas, chests, and a prominent central architectural zone. The city can be partly obscured by the cavern’s darkness, so scan across open spaces before assuming the biome contains only natural sculk.

How to avoid summoning the Warden

Sculk sensors detect vibrations. Actions including movement, opening containers, placing or breaking blocks, and other nearby activity can alert the sculk system. Sculk shriekers can apply Darkness and, after enough activations, summon the Warden.

The safest approach is not to fight. The Warden is blind and detects its surroundings through sound and smell, making avoidance and retreat more reliable than trying to win a conventional melee battle.

Practical Deep Dark rules

  1. Crouch and move deliberately. Avoid sprinting through the city.
  2. Use wool between you and sensors. Wool can reduce vibration transmission, making it useful for paths, barriers, and controlled work areas.
  3. Do not break blocks unnecessarily. Mining a route through every obstacle can create more danger than walking around it.
  4. Do not repeatedly trigger shriekers. If you activate one, stop and reassess rather than continuing to make noise.
  5. Keep an escape route. Know where you will retreat before looting a chest or crossing an exposed section.
  6. Leave when the situation deteriorates. Darkness, multiple shrieker activations, or a Warden spawn are good reasons to retreat instead of pressing forward.

Projectiles and throwable distractions should also be used sparingly. They may help redirect attention in some situations, but projectile activity can create vibrations around Wardens and may make the situation worse.

What makes an Ancient City worth finding?

Ancient Cities contain unique or especially valuable exploration rewards associated with the Wild Update. Depending on your edition and version, notable goals include:

  • Swift Sneak: An enchantment associated with Ancient City exploration and sneaking.
  • Echo shards: Used to craft a recovery compass.
  • Disc fragments: Nine fragments are needed to create the special music disc associated with the city.
  • Reinforced deepslate: A distinctive city-related block and central architectural feature.
  • Other chest loot: Ancient City chests make the risk worthwhile for players seeking rare exploration items.

Looting is optional. If your main goal is an echo shard, a music disc, or Swift Sneak, establish a recovery plan first. Valuable items are not useful if a rushed return trip causes you to lose the entire expedition.

Java Edition and Bedrock Edition notes

Ancient Cities have the same broad generation concept in Java and Bedrock: they are Overworld structures associated with the Deep Dark. However, command syntax, identifiers, and available behavior can vary by edition and version.

The current command documentation used for this guide lists minecraft:ancient_city as a valid structure identifier for Bedrock and uses the same command form shown above for Java. If your game rejects the command, trust autocomplete in your installed version rather than copying an identifier from an outdated guide.

Seed-analysis tools can also estimate structure locations, but their results must match the exact world seed, edition, and version. A result for Java is not automatically reliable for Bedrock, and a result from a different game version may not match your generated terrain. External tools are optional and separate from vanilla survival play.

Why you may not be finding one

You found sculk but no city

This is normal. Deep Dark is the prerequisite biome, not a guarantee of an Ancient City. Explore nearby large caverns and the rest of the sculk-covered area. If the patch remains small, move on to another mountain range or plateau.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

There is no Deep Dark beneath your mountain

Generation is seed-dependent. A mountain only improves your odds. Travel to another substantial mountain formation or high plateau and repeat the search through natural cave systems.

You dug down and hit ordinary stone or deepslate

Stop extending a vertical shaft in the hope that the city will eventually appear. Search for a large cave entrance, ravine-like opening, or underground space that lets you explore horizontally. Ancient Cities generate in large caverns, and straight-down mining is both inefficient and dangerous.

A Warden spawned

Stop making unnecessary movements and vibrations. Use cover, avoid repeated interactions, and retreat if you can do so without crossing the active danger zone. Do not assume that strong armor turns the encounter into a normal boss fight; the Warden is designed to make evasion the safer strategy.

The locate command returns an error

Check cheats or permissions, the current dimension, the exact identifier, and the world version. On multiplayer servers, ask whether commands are permitted for your player. If autocomplete offers a different structure name, use the installed game’s suggestion.

A compact survival route

  1. Find a large mountain, jagged peak, snowy slope, or high plateau.
  2. Set up a safe surface base with spare food, tools, and a bed where appropriate.
  3. Enter through a natural cave or large underground opening.
  4. Descend until the surrounding geology is deep deepslate and sculk begins appearing.
  5. Confirm that the area is the Deep Dark.
  6. Place wool paths and visual markers before entering the most dangerous sections.
  7. Explore the cavern laterally, checking for city-scale architecture.
  8. Loot only when you have a reliable retreat route.
  9. Leave immediately if shriekers repeatedly activate or a Warden appears.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can an Ancient City generate under every mountain?

No. Mountains and high plateaus are better places to begin because the Deep Dark is more likely beneath certain low-erosion terrain, but world generation is procedural. A mountain does not guarantee either a Deep Dark biome or an Ancient City.

Does finding the Deep Dark mean an Ancient City is nearby?

No. Ancient Cities generate in the Deep Dark, but many Deep Dark biomes do not contain a city. Explore the surrounding large caverns or search another mountainous area.

What is the command to find an Ancient City?

With cheats or the required permissions enabled, use /locate structure minecraft:ancient_city. Run it in the Overworld and use autocomplete if your edition or version rejects the identifier.

Should I fight the Warden?

Usually not. The Warden is blind and responds to sound and smell. Sneaking, using wool, avoiding repeated vibrations, and retreating are generally safer than attempting a direct fight.

What is the best thing to bring to an Ancient City?

Wool or wool carpets are especially useful for managing vibrations. Also bring durable armor, food, spare pickaxes, building blocks, controlled lighting, and a recovery plan for your valuables.

The Bottom Line

For survival, search beneath a large mountain or plateau, follow natural caves into the Deep Dark, and explore large cavern spaces instead of digging straight down. For the fastest route with cheats enabled, use /locate structure minecraft:ancient_city. In either case, treat sculk shriekers as alarms, use wool to reduce vibrations, and leave rather than fight when a Warden appears.
