This is a compatibility-conscious update, not a guarantee that every title remains available.
The source list was published by Digital Trends on April 21, 2022. Its headline promised 25 games, but the article body actually named 26. The recommendations below preserve the strongest 25-game selection while explaining the discrepancy and the serious difference between a Fire Phone, an older Fire HD, and a newer Fire HD tablet.

Before you install anything: Fire HD and Fire Phone are not the same platform
“Fire HD” covers multiple generations with different processors, memory, screen sizes, Fire OS versions, and storage limits. The Fire Phone is an older, discontinued device with a separate hardware and software environment. A game that appeared in the Amazon Appstore for a Fire tablet was not automatically compatible with Fire Phone.
#1 Best Overall
- Do what you love, uninterrupted — 25% faster performance than the previous generation and is ideal for seamless streaming, reading, and gaming.
- High-def entertainment — A 10.1" 1080p Full HD display brings brilliant color to all your shows and games. Binge watch longer with 13-hour battery, 3 or 4 GB RAM, 32 or 64 GB of storage, and up to 1 TB expandable storage with micro-SD card (sold separately).
- Thin, light, durable — Tap into entertainment from anywhere with a lightweight, durable design and strengthened glass made from aluminosilicate glass. As measured in a tumble test, Fire HD 10 is 2.7 times as durable as the Samsung Galaxy Tab A8 (2022).
- Stay up to speed — Use the 5 MP front-facing camera to Zoom with family and friends, or create content for social apps like Instagram and TikTok.
- Ready when inspiration strikes — With 4,096 levels of pressure sensitivity, the Made for Amazon Stylus Pen (sold separately) offers a natural writing experience that responds to your handwriting. Use it to write, sketch in apps like OneNote, and more.
For that reason, this article uses these practical labels:
- Fire Phone: assume compatibility is unverified unless the exact device shows the listing.
- Older Fire HD: older Kindle Fire and Fire HD models may struggle with newer apps, large downloads, or unsupported Android APIs.
- Recent Fire HD: newer Fire HD 8 and Fire HD 10 generations are generally the better targets, but the store’s device-specific compatibility notice still controls.
- Current status: the supplied research did not independently verify 2026 listings, prices, offline behavior, or live servers.
Search for each title in the Amazon Appstore on the exact device before buying. Do not treat inclusion here as proof of current installability.

| Threes! | Short offline-style sessions | Paid; historical recommendation | Low-intensity and touch-friendly |
| Plants vs. Zombies | Tower defense | Paid/free status may vary | Well suited to touch, but verify ads and purchases |
| Game Dev Story | Management strategy | Paid; historical recommendation | Excellent style of game for weaker hardware |
| Crossy Road | Quick arcade play | Free; historical description | Check ads, purchases, and current device support |

The 25 games
Action and adventure
- Minecraft — The most flexible recommendation: building, exploration, survival, and potentially multiplayer. It is also one of the least suitable blind purchases for an old Fire device because performance, storage, authentication, updates, and multiplayer support can vary.
- Terraria — A strong 2D alternative for players who prefer mining, crafting, combat, and exploration. Its presentation is less demanding than a fully 3D sandbox, but older hardware may still have trouble with larger worlds or current builds.
- VVVVVV — A precise retro platformer built around gravity-flipping rather than conventional jumping. Its small-scale 2D design makes it a sensible candidate for older hardware, though reaction-heavy controls may be uncomfortable on some touchscreens.
- Sonic the Hedgehog 2 — A classic fast platformer that suits short sessions. Touch controls and device compatibility deserve more scrutiny than the game’s age might suggest.
- Five Nights at Freddy’s — A compact horror experience based on monitoring cameras and surviving until morning. It is not a family recommendation: check age ratings, jump scares, and the exact edition available.
- Thomas Was Alone — A story-focused platform puzzle game with simple geometric characters. It is a comparatively good fit for players who want a self-contained experience rather than a live service.
Arcade
- Super Hexagon — A famously difficult minimalist reflex game. It is ideal for quick attempts but a poor choice for players who dislike rapid reaction demands or small touch controls.
- Crossy Road — An approachable endless-crossing game that works well in short bursts. The original coverage described it as free; current advertising, in-app purchases, and listing status must be checked.
- Ridiculous Fishing — A quirky score-chasing fishing game with a self-contained arcade structure. Confirm that the listing and device support remain available before relying on it as an offline purchase.
- Desert Golfing — Minimalist one-touch golf with an unusually persistent course structure. Its simple presentation makes it attractive for older hardware, but current availability is unverified.
- Zen Pinball HD — A polished pinball option whose free or paid tables may vary. Expect larger downloads and possible online or purchase dependencies; check the specific table listing.
- Fruit Ninja — A touch-native arcade classic. It is easy to understand, but ads, purchases, edition changes, and support for old Fire OS versions can affect whether it remains a good recommendation.
Puzzle
- Monument Valley — The standout visual-puzzle recommendation, using perspective, architecture, and gentle exploration. It is especially appealing on a tablet, although the original price and current store status should not be assumed.
- Threes! — A compact number puzzle with considerable replay value. Its turn-based pace and simple interface make it one of the better candidates for an older Fire HD.
- Hitman GO — A turn-based interpretation of stealth and assassination puzzles. It avoids the precision demands of action games, but its availability and licensing status need confirmation.
- World of Goo — A tactile physics puzzler about building structures from animated blobs. It is a strong family play option in principle, subject to the current age rating, listing, and purchase model.
- 10000000 — A fast match-and-combat puzzle hybrid with role-playing progression. It can suit short sessions, though its speed and small touch targets may challenge some players.
- Puzzle & Dragons — A free-to-play puzzle role-playing game historically recommended for its battles, collection systems, and social elements. Treat it as online-dependent until login, remote content, and service availability are confirmed.
- Candy Crush Saga — A familiar match-three game with levels, lives, advertising, and optional purchases. “Free” should not be read as friction-free or permanently playable without network services.
- Scribblenauts Remix — A word-and-object puzzle game with creative problem solving and strong appeal for younger players. Check content ratings, purchase exposure, and whether the version supports the target Fire model.
Strategy and board games
- Hearthstone — A deep digital card game, but one of the riskiest recommendations for legacy hardware. It relies heavily on updates, account systems, online services, and a compatible current client.
- Game Dev Story — A management simulation about running a game studio. Its turn-based structure and modest visual demands make it one of the most sensible choices for an old Fire tablet if the listing remains available.
- Plants vs. Zombies — A readable, touch-friendly tower-defense game with strong single-player appeal. Verify whether the available edition contains ads, purchases, online requirements, or compatibility restrictions.
- Words With Friends — A social word game that depends on accounts, opponents, notifications, and publisher infrastructure. It may be useful only if its current online services work on the target device.
- Sudoku — The most straightforward low-demand option in the group. It is well suited to travel and older hardware, but different editions can vary in advertising, offline behavior, and purchase prompts.
What about the apparent 26th game? The original article also names Trivia Crack. It is not silently forgotten: it is excluded from this corrected 25-game selection because its value depends heavily on current online services, accounts, advertising, and regional availability. The original body therefore contains 26 recommendations despite its “25” headline.
Best games for old Fire hardware
Start with Sudoku, Threes!, Game Dev Story, Plants vs. Zombies, World of Goo, VVVVVV, and Thomas Was Alone. These genres generally place fewer demands on frame rate, graphics, and network services than live card games, large sandboxes, or fast 3D action.

- Fire HD 8 offers an 8" HD display for seamless streaming and gaming, coupled with a 5MP rear facing camera for photos—with a thin, light, durable design.
- Fast and responsive with long battery life - With up to 4 GB RAM (2X more than 2022 release), 64GB of storage, and up to 1 TB of expandable storage (sold separately). Hexa-core processor for fast, responsive performance. Up to 13 hours of reading, browsing the web, watching videos, gaming, and listening to music at home and on-the-go.
- Save time, get creative - Enjoy three smart tools to help you send polished emails, quickly summarize webpages, and create unique wallpapers.
- Stream or download your favorite shows, movies, and games (like Minecraft, Roblox, and more). Enjoy your favorite content from Facebook, Hulu, Instagram, TikTok, and more through Amazon’s Appstore (Google Play not supported. Subscription for some apps required).
- Stay connected with family and friends - ask Alexa to make video calls to friends and family or download apps like Zoom.
Prioritize turn-based play, small levels, local progress, and simple touch interfaces. Be more cautious with Minecraft, Terraria, Hearthstone, and online puzzle games. A free title can be a worse choice than a paid classic if it requires advertising servers, authentication, downloadable events, or matchmaking.
Best free games—and the catch
The original coverage described Crossy Road, Zen Pinball HD, Puzzle & Dragons, Candy Crush Saga, Hearthstone, Trivia Crack, Words With Friends, and Sudoku as free or partly free offerings. Those are historical descriptions, not current pricing claims.
Before installing, distinguish among free with ads, free with in-app purchases, free with lives or energy systems, and free but online-dependent. For a child’s tablet, review purchase controls, advertising, chat, friend systems, and the game’s age rating rather than relying on the word “free.”
Offline play and online-service risk
Single-player does not automatically mean offline. A game may still require a first launch, licensing check, account login, remote content, advertisements, cloud saves, or publisher servers. The highest-risk recommendations are Hearthstone, Words With Friends, Trivia Crack, Puzzle & Dragons, and Candy Crush Saga. Minecraft may remain useful locally while multiplayer or account features change.

- Like-New Amazon Fire HD 8 tablet is refurbished, tested, and certified to look and work like new and comes with the same limited warranty as a new device. Like-New Amazon devices may be packaged in generic Amazon-branded boxes.
- Fire HD 8 offers an 8" HD display for seamless streaming and gaming, coupled with a 5MP rear facing camera for photos—with a thin, light, durable design.
- Responsive with all day battery life - Includes 3GB RAM (50% more than 2022 release), 32GB of storage, and up to 1 TB of expandable storage (sold separately).
If offline play matters, install the game while connected, launch it once, then test it with Wi-Fi disabled. Check whether it opens, saves progress, and remains playable. Do not assume that a previously installed app will continue working after an update or server change.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How to check compatibility before buying
- Open the Amazon Appstore on the exact Fire Phone or Fire tablet.
- Search for the title directly rather than relying on an old web article.
- Read the supported-device or compatibility notice shown for that device.
- Check the displayed update information, rating, ads, purchases, account requirements, and internet requirements.
- Confirm the edition and region. A tablet listing does not prove Fire Phone support.
- If compatibility is uncertain, check the applicable Amazon refund terms before purchasing.
- Prefer the official store. Sideloaded apps may lack updates, licensing support, notifications, or Google-dependent features.
Store labels differ by Fire OS version, so the exact wording and menu path may not match every model.
If a game cannot be found or will not run
The listing is missing
Possible causes include delisting, regional restrictions, an unsupported Fire OS version, an incompatible device architecture, a replacement edition, or a listing that is visible on the web but unavailable on the device. Search from the target device and inspect its compatibility notice before trying anything else.

The game installs but will not launch
Restart the device, update Fire OS as far as that model permits, and reinstall through the official store. Check for an account, internet, licensing, or Google Play Services requirement. Unsupported APIs, expired licensing checks, incompatible screen handling, and broken publisher servers can all cause launch failures.

The game performs badly
Close background apps, free storage, reboot, lower graphics settings where available, and disable unnecessary network or location features. On very old hardware, choose turn-based puzzles, board games, and management simulations instead of demanding 3D or real-time titles.
Multiplayer no longer works
An installed game can retain its single-player content while losing login, matchmaking, leaderboard, chat, or social features. Treat online functionality as “requires verification” unless the current service and device support are confirmed.
What the original list gets wrong for a 2026 reader
- The count: the headline says 25, while the body appears to list 26 games.
- The catalog assumption: an Amazon Appstore listing from 2022 is not a 2026 availability guarantee.
- The prices: dollar amounts in the original article are historical examples, not current prices.
- The device grouping: Fire Phone and Fire HD tablets should not be treated as interchangeable.
- The missing offline analysis: readers need to know whether a title launches and saves without Wi-Fi.
- The missing purchase and privacy analysis: free games may include ads, accounts, social features, or in-app purchases.
The original article remains useful as a historical shortlist. It is not, by itself, a current compatibility audit.
