You need a legitimate, fully updated copy of GTA V installed on a Windows PC before FiveM can connect to the game.
The basic process is: download FiveM.exe from the official site, point it to GTA5.exe, allow FiveM to update its local files, and sign in with Cfx through your browser.

What you need before downloading FiveM
- A Windows PC. Cfx lists fully updated Windows 8.1, Windows 10, and Windows 11 in its requirements, but Windows 8.1 is obsolete; use a supported, fully updated Windows installation where possible.
- A legitimate, fully updated installation of GTA V. FiveM does not provide GTA V, and pirated or otherwise illegitimate copies are not supported. Cfx lists Steam, Epic Games Store, Rockstar Warehouse, Amazon, and Xbox Store among the places GTA V may be obtained. See Cfx’s GTA V purchase information.
- An internet connection and permission to run an installer and access your game folder.
- Free disk space. Cfx lists 105 GB for the original game plus approximately 4 GB of additional FiveM cache at minimum, or about 8 GB of additional FiveM space under its recommended figures. Leave more room for updates, server assets, caches, and Windows temporary files.
- A Cfx account, or the ability to create or authorize one during setup.
Cfx’s published hardware figures are requirements, not independent performance tests. Its minimum specifications include an Intel Core 2 Q6600 or AMD Phenom 9850-class CPU, a GeForce 9800 GT 1 GB, Radeon HD 4870 1 GB, or Intel HD GT2-class GPU, and 8 GB of RAM. The recommended figures include an Intel Core i5-3470 or AMD FX-8350-class processor, a GTX 660 2 GB or Radeon HD 7870 2 GB-class GPU, and 16 GB of RAM. Check the official system requirements for the current list.
Download FiveM from the official website
- Go to FiveM.net.
- Select Download Client.
- Review the Creator Platform License Agreement and select Sure, I Agree!.
- Save the downloaded file, normally named
FiveM.exe.
Do not use a “cracked” installer, unofficial launcher, bundled download, or third-party mirror. The official site is the correct source for the current client and avoids the additional risk of tampered or malicious files. Button names can change as the website is updated, but the official FiveM download page remains the right starting point.

Install FiveM and connect it to GTA V
- Open your Downloads folder and run
FiveM.exe. - When FiveM asks for the game location, browse to the folder containing the actual
GTA5.exefile. - Select
GTA5.exeand confirm with Open. - If FiveM says local game data needs to be updated, select Yes and wait for the process to finish.
- When prompted, select Sign in with Cfx.
- Complete the authorization in your browser, then return to FiveM.
- Check the displayed welcome username and select Continue.
The exact wording of prompts may change, but do not skip the Cfx authorization step in the current setup flow. Confirm that you are signing in through the official Cfx service rather than an unfamiliar pop-up or unrelated website.
If you run the installer from an empty folder, FiveM installs there. Otherwise, Cfx’s client documentation says the default location is:

There is no single correct GTA V path. Steam, Epic Games Store, Rockstar Games Launcher, and custom installations can all use different folders.
- Use the launcher’s installed-game management, browse, or installation-location option.
- If you have a desktop shortcut, inspect its target or open its file location, then find the real game executable.
- Select the file named exactly
GTA5.exe.
Do not select FiveM.exe, PlayGTAV.exe, a desktop shortcut, or an unrelated launcher executable. If GTA V is incomplete or corrupted, repair or update it through its original launcher and confirm that the game starts normally before trying FiveM again. Never download a replacement GTA5.exe from the internet.
Launch FiveM after installation
After the first setup, open FiveM from the Windows Start menu. Cfx specifically advises against repeatedly running the original downloaded installer; that file is used to install or reinstall the client, not as the normal shortcut for everyday launches.
FiveM will not automatically place you in a random server. Open the server browser, choose a community, and read its rules and onboarding instructions. Servers may download their own maps, vehicles, scripts, and other assets. Some communities also require an application, Discord verification, whitelisting, or separate registration.

FiveM client versus FiveM server
If you only want to play, download the client described above. You do not need FXServer.exe, server artifacts, server.7z, txAdmin, or a server license key.
Those files belong to people hosting their own servers. Hosting requires a separate setup process involving server artifacts and configuration. See Cfx’s server setup guide if that is your goal.
Fix common FiveM installation problems
FiveM cannot find the game executable
Reopen your game launcher and locate the installed-game directory. Select the actual GTA5.exe, not a shortcut or launcher file. Verify that GTA V starts normally, then repair or update it through the launcher if necessary.
FiveM says it is already installed
Use the FiveM shortcut in the Windows Start menu. You normally do not need to run the original downloaded FiveM.exe again after installation.
Antivirus blocks FiveM
Antivirus interference can cause startup failures, an “Moving of xyz.exe failed” message, a hang at “Starting FiveM, we’re getting there,” or entitlement-token errors. First confirm that the installer came from FiveM.net, update Windows and your antivirus, and check its quarantine and blocked-app history. If the file is verified as legitimate, you can consider a narrowly scoped exception, but do not disable antivirus protection wholesale. If the block continues, consult Cfx’s client-issues documentation or submit a support request.

FiveM hangs at the rotating splash screen
Close FiveM first, then follow Cfx’s documented reset step by deleting:
%appdata%citizenfxros_id.dat
%localappdata%digitalentitlementsThis is not a universal fix. It may require you to sign in again.
“Error loading component xyz.dll”
Cfx recommends deleting caches.xml from the FiveM application-data folder. If that file is not present, its documentation says to delete the entire application-data folder and run FiveM again. Do not delete unrelated Windows system files.
“Entry Point Not Found”
Cfx documents a specific conflict involving these files in C:WindowsSystem32:
v8.dll
v8_libbase.dll
v8_libplatform.dllThey may be leftovers from another application and load before FiveM’s own versions. This is an advanced repair step: verify that this is the documented issue before removing anything from System32, and consult the official troubleshooting page rather than deleting files at random.
FiveM crashes on only one server
Test another server or FiveM’s testing server. If FiveM works elsewhere, the problem may be specific to that server’s scripts, assets, or configuration and should be reported to its owners rather than treated as a failed client installation.

Cfx documents a hardware-specific issue affecting some older AMD laptop GPUs and the Chromium Embedded Framework. Treat this as a documented compatibility case, not a general FiveM failure, and check the current Cfx client-issues guidance.
FiveM uninstalls itself
This is listed as a support category by Cfx, but the available documentation does not provide one universal fix. Use the official client-issues page for the current diagnosis instead of relying on a guessed repair.

The normal uninstall route is:
- Press Win + R.
- Enter
appwiz.cpland press Enter. - Find FiveM, right-click it, and select Uninstall.
Cfx also documents a manual alternative. Press Win + R, enter %localappdata%, press Enter, and delete the FiveM folder. Use this as an alternative when the standard uninstall route is unavailable. Running FiveM.exe again can reinstall the client. See Cfx’s installation and uninstall guidance.
Is FiveM safe and free?
The FiveM client is free to download. GTA V is separate and must be legitimately owned; server hosting may also involve separate costs if you decide to operate a server. No download can be guaranteed safe in the abstract, so use the official FiveM site, keep Windows and security software updated, and avoid unofficial installers.

FiveM is a Windows PC client. Do not treat it as a normal console or macOS download. If you encounter an edition- or launcher-specific compatibility message, use current official Cfx support rather than assuming every GTA V configuration is interchangeable.
