Split Fiction is the best story-driven co-op game for most players, with It Takes Two, A Way Out, Portal 2, and Baldur’s Gate 3 covering the strongest alternatives for couples, cinematic campaigns, puzzle fans, and RPG groups.

Split Fiction is the best current match for most people searching for a story-driven co-op game. It is built specifically for two players, constantly changes its mechanics, and follows writers Mio and Zoe through linked science-fiction and fantasy worlds. It Takes Two remains the best all-around choice for couples, while A Way Out is the strongest short, linear cinematic adventure. For a much longer role-playing campaign, choose Baldur’s Gate 3; for shared horror, choose The Quarry or one of The Dark Pictures Anthology games.

This ranking uses a broad but honest definition of story-driven co-op. The first games have dedicated campaigns, authored characters, branching choices, or a narrative structure designed around cooperation. Later entries are hybrid recommendations: their stories matter, but exploration, survival, loot, combat, or an emergent shared world may matter just as much.

Quick picks

Best for Game Players and co-op shape
Best overall Split Fiction Two; online or split-screen
Couples and couch co-op It Takes Two Two; online or local, with Friend’s Pass support
A focused cinematic story A Way Out Two; exclusively cooperative
Co-op puzzles Portal 2 Two; separate co-op campaign
Choices and role-playing Baldur’s Gate 3 Up to four; online and LAN co-op
A deep RPG for a group Divinity: Original Sin 2 – Definitive Edition Up to four; online and local co-op
Interactive horror The Quarry Group-friendly shared play; shared/split-screen support
Survival and base-building Grounded Co-op campaign; exploration and crafting are central
Combat-first co-op Remnant II Solo or with two friends
Family-friendly local play LEGO Star Wars: The Skywalker Saga Local co-op; accessible action-adventure
A larger online crew Sea of Thieves Online crew-based multiplayer; episodic and emergent stories

What makes a co-op game genuinely story-driven?

A game can have cutscenes and still be a poor narrative co-op recommendation. The strongest entries here make the second player part of the experience rather than adding a companion who merely follows the host. Their stories are carried by shared puzzles, character decisions, split-screen staging, party disagreements, or mechanics that only make sense when two people coordinate.

That distinction matters. Split Fiction, It Takes Two, A Way Out, and Portal 2 are authored co-op campaigns. Baldur’s Gate 3 and Divinity: Original Sin 2 are party RPGs in which the story reacts to a group’s choices. Grounded, Remnant II, Outward, Borderlands 3, Tiny Tina’s Wonderlands, and Dying Light 2 are hybrid or systems-led adventures. Sea of Thieves goes further toward an open-ended shared world: its best stories are often the ones your crew creates rather than a single tightly authored campaign.

The 25 best story-driven co-op games

1. Split Fiction

Best for: Two players who want the most purpose-built modern co-op adventure.

Players: Two. Online and split-screen play are central to the design.

Sackboy: A Big Adventure – PlayStation 5
  • Face thrilling, unpredictable challenges as you explore distinctive hand-crafted lands through deeply immersive and expressive controls.
  • PERILOUS PLATFORMING EXPERIENCE - Explore here, there and everywhere as you utilize Sackboy’s cool, diverse move-set to face a huge variety of thrilling challenges, fierce enemies and startling surprises.
  • RE-STUFFED. RE-STITCHED. RE-ZIPPED - Sackboy returns to the big time stuffed with fresh moves and game-changing gadgets in an awe-inspiring and downright fun 3D adventure in this new, but familiar world.

Why it ranks first: Split Fiction is the clearest contemporary successor to Hazelight’s co-op formula. Writers Mio and Zoe become trapped inside their own science-fiction and fantasy stories, and the game repeatedly moves between those contrasting worlds. The result is not simply a two-player action game with dialogue between missions: the changing mechanics, split-screen presentation, and narrative partnership are the point.

One section may ask players to coordinate around a new traversal ability, while the next can completely change the rhythm of play. That variety makes it especially good for a pair that loses interest when a campaign repeats the same combat loop. The central relationship also gives the adventure a stronger emotional spine than most co-op action games.

For a current purchase, check the platform-specific Split Fiction game listing for your region. Platform editions, availability, and online requirements can change, so do not assume that an edition sold for one console transfers to another.

2. It Takes Two

Best for: Couples, close friends, and players who want a welcoming two-person campaign.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Players: Two; online or couch co-op. Friend’s Pass makes it possible for one owner to invite another player in supported versions.

Why it ranks so highly: Cody and May are a couple on the verge of separating when they are transformed into dolls. Each level turns their relationship problem into a cooperative obstacle course, and the game keeps introducing new abilities instead of settling on one permanent character class or combat role.

It Takes Two is unusually good at making both players feel equally important. You may need to synchronize jumps, operate two parts of a machine, or use complementary tools, but neither player is reduced to carrying the other through the campaign. Its accessible controls and frequent mechanical changes make it the safest recommendation when you do not know a partner’s gaming experience.

If you are shopping specifically for Sony’s console, compare the current It Takes Two for PS5 listing. Check the exact edition and region before buying, particularly if one player plans to use Friend’s Pass or play across different generations of hardware.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

3. A Way Out

Best for: Two players who want a linear, cinematic prison-break drama.

Players: Two, and exclusively co-op.

A Way Out follows Leo and Vincent as they escape prison and deal with the consequences of that decision. It is more focused and linear than the RPGs on this list, with both players occupying distinct roles during escapes, stealth sections, driving sequences, fights, and quieter character scenes.

That narrow scope is an advantage if your group wants a campaign it can finish without committing to a huge fantasy world. The game is built around split-screen awareness: sometimes both characters act at once, and sometimes the screen emphasizes one player’s situation while the other waits or helps. It does not offer the same mechanical variety or freedom as It Takes Two, but its direct pacing makes it a strong choice for a pair looking for a concentrated story rather than an ongoing hobby.

The prison setting, violence, criminal themes, and mature subject matter make it unsuitable for younger players. Online, local, and platform-specific requirements should be checked for the edition you intend to use.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

4. Portal 2

Best for: Players who prefer communication-heavy puzzles and authored comedy to combat.

Players: Two in a separate co-op campaign.

Portal 2’s co-op story is not just the single-player campaign with a second person added. It has its own two-player test sequence, characters, puzzles, and comedic relationship with the testing facility. The central challenge is learning to think in terms of two portals, two bodies, and two perspectives rather than trying to solve every room independently.

It is one of the best games for discovering whether a co-op partner communicates well. Success depends on describing what you see, agreeing on timing, and accepting that the apparent solution may require one player to set up a move for the other. There is little character drama compared with Hazelight’s games, but the story is tightly integrated with the puzzles and consistently rewards cooperation.

Co-op modes and local-play support vary by platform and version, so confirm the specific release before purchasing. A couch session also requires two compatible input devices; online players do not automatically need a second controller at the same location.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

5. Baldur’s Gate 3

Best for: Groups that want consequential choices, role-playing freedom, and a very long campaign.

Players: Up to four; online and LAN co-op. Local support depends on platform and edition.

Baldur’s Gate 3 is a party RPG rather than a two-character cinematic adventure. Each player can control a character in a Dungeons & Dragons-inspired world, make decisions, pursue relationships, and contribute to plans that can radically change quests and outcomes. The group may agree on a course of action, split up to investigate different problems, or discover that one player’s private conversation has created consequences for everyone.

Its co-op works best when the group is comfortable negotiating. The game allows players to vote informally with their actions, but it does not guarantee that everyone will get the outcome they wanted. That unpredictability is a major part of its appeal and a source of friction for groups that expect one person to direct the story.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

This is a substantial commitment with turn-based combat, extensive exploration, mature themes, sexual content, violence, and morally difficult choices. It is an excellent long-form recommendation, but not the right pick for a quick weekend campaign. For platform-specific buying research, check the current Baldur’s Gate 3 game listing and verify whether the edition matches the hardware used by the rest of the party.

6. Divinity: Original Sin 2 – Definitive Edition

Best for: Experienced RPG players who want a slower, more systemic group campaign.

Players: Up to four; online and local co-op.

Divinity: Original Sin 2 gives a group a richly reactive fantasy campaign, a party of distinct characters, meaningful choices, romance possibilities, and combat systems that reward experimentation. Environmental interactions are especially important: surfaces, elements, elevation, objects, and status effects can combine in ways that make the same encounter play out differently from one group to another.

Its co-op is more demanding than It Takes Two or Portal 2. Players need to discuss party roles, divide equipment, agree on quests, and accept that the game’s systems may produce unexpected consequences. The slower pace and tactical combat are rewarding for a committed group but can test a casual pair that wants immediate cinematic momentum.

Choose the Definitive Edition and confirm the platform’s exact local and online features before purchase. Mature fantasy violence, disturbing situations, and adult themes are present, although the game’s appeal rests more on player freedom and tactical problem-solving than spectacle.

7. The Quarry

Best for: A group that wants to watch, debate, and shape a branching horror story.

Players: Shared/split-screen play supports a group experience; multiplayer features vary by platform and edition.

The Quarry puts nine camp counselors in a night of survival horror. Rather than giving every player a continuously active combat role, it passes control between characters and asks the group to decide what to investigate, whom to trust, and when to run. Those choices can determine who survives and which version of the night the group sees.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

It is ideal for a living-room audience because spectators can discuss the evidence and argue over risky decisions. The cooperative value is social and narrative rather than mechanical: the fun comes from treating the campaign like an interactive horror film in which every player has a stake in the cast.

The Quarry contains strong horror violence, frightening imagery, and mature themes. It is a better choice for a group that enjoys watching and debating than for players who want constant hands-on action. Check the store listing for the exact shared, local, or online mode on your platform.

8. The Dark Pictures Anthology: House of Ashes

Best for: Horror fans who want military tension, supernatural danger, and replayable outcomes.

Players: Multiplayer options vary by platform and mode.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

House of Ashes follows soldiers and other characters beneath an ancient temple, where a military conflict collides with a supernatural threat. Its branching scenes, quick decisions, exploration, and character survival give every player reasons to pay attention. A mistake or disagreement can change who remains alive and which explanations the group receives.

The game is more compact and choice-driven than a traditional co-op action campaign. It works particularly well with a small group that enjoys comparing decisions after a playthrough and replaying to see how different choices alter the outcome. The setting also gives it a more action-oriented tone than some entries in the anthology.

Expect mature horror, violence, disturbing imagery, and stressful decision-making. Multiplayer modes, local support, and online requirements depend on the platform and edition.

9. The Dark Pictures Anthology: Man of Medan

Best for: Players who want a standalone ghost-ship horror story built around survival choices.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Players: Online and local multiplayer options are available, subject to platform and edition.

Man of Medan strands its cast on and around a haunted ship, using exploration, dialogue choices, quick-time decisions, and unreliable appearances to create uncertainty about what is really happening. Its defining co-op appeal is deciding together which characters take risks and which ones survive.

The writing and pacing are less consistent than in The Quarry or House of Ashes, but that does not make it irrelevant. It is a useful choice for a group that wants a shorter, self-contained horror scenario and values branching outcomes more than polished action. The separate players may not always see or experience exactly the same information, which creates productive suspicion during a shared session.

It contains mature horror and violence. Treat it as a branching horror anthology entry rather than a conventional action-adventure campaign.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

10. The Dark Pictures Anthology: Little Hope

Best for: Horror players who prioritize atmosphere, mystery, and multiple endings.

Players: Multiplayer modes vary by platform and edition.

Little Hope places its cast in a fog-bound supernatural mystery. Players investigate an unsettling town, interpret its clues, and make choices that influence the fate of the characters and the ending reached. Like the other Dark Pictures games, its co-op works through shared decision-making and the possibility that different players know different pieces of the situation.

Its appeal is primarily atmospheric. It is a good fit for people who enjoy discussing theories and accepting that a poor decision may permanently remove a character from the story. It is less suitable for anyone expecting a combat-heavy campaign or a straightforward explanation delivered quickly.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Expect mature horror themes, violence, and disturbing imagery. Confirm multiplayer availability for the precise platform version you are considering.

11. Grounded

Best for: Groups that want an authored mystery inside a survival and base-building game.

Players: Cooperative multiplayer; the exact online configuration depends on platform and account setup.

Rank #3
Overcooked! All You Can Eat - PlayStation 5
  • Overcooked! Goes online- for the first time ever, online multiplayer has been fully integrated into Overcooked! Revisit your favorite kitchens from the first game in stunning 4K and online!

  • Overcooked! All you can eat contains a features to allow as many players as possible to join in the food frenzy! Scalable UI, dyslexia friendly text and Color blindness options are all available.

Grounded shrinks its cast to insect size and asks players to investigate why it happened while surviving in a dangerous backyard. The campaign’s story is embedded in exploration, crafting, combat, resource gathering, and base-building rather than delivered as a constant sequence of cinematic scenes.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

That structure makes the game better for a group that enjoys setting its own pace. One player can gather materials, another can improve the base, and the whole group can prepare for an expedition into a new section of the yard. The authored mysteries give progression a narrative purpose, but the memorable moments often come from systems: an oversized insect finding the base, a storm ruining a plan, or a carefully prepared expedition turning into a retreat.

Choose Grounded if you want a cooperative adventure that can continue after the main mystery has drawn you in. Do not choose it if your definition of story-driven requires the game to keep every player in the same cinematic scene.

12. Remnant II

Best for: Action-focused groups that prefer difficult combat and discovery to dialogue-heavy storytelling.

Players: Solo or co-op with two friends.

Remnant II combines third-person shooting, challenging encounters, branching quest lines, procedurally varied areas, multiple worlds, and a campaign structure that encourages replay. Its narrative is present in the worlds, characters, discoveries, and alternative routes, but the immediate co-op conversation is usually about positioning, builds, enemy patterns, and how to survive the next fight.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The procedural variation means two groups may not encounter every quest or location in the same order. That makes the game unusually good for replay and discovery, though less ideal for players seeking a tightly scripted film-like story. Its difficulty also rewards a group willing to learn from failed attempts rather than treating every death as a setback to avoid.

Pick it over Baldur’s Gate 3 when combat is the priority. Pick it over Borderlands 3 when you want more mystery, challenge, and world variation than a conventional loot shooter.

13. Outward Definitive Edition

Best for: Players who want a demanding journey where preparation and defeat have consequences.

Players: Online or split-screen co-op.

Outward is an open-world RPG-survival game with a less cinematic story than the games near the top of this list. Its cooperative identity comes from the practical work of surviving together: preparing supplies, managing equipment, reading the environment, choosing which quest to pursue, and recovering after a defeat.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The world does not always make progress comfortable. Environmental danger, travel, resource pressure, and the consequences of losing a fight can force players to rethink their plans. That friction creates a distinctive cooperative journey, especially for a pair that enjoys gradual mastery and does not need every objective to be marked with a dramatic cutscene.

Outward includes mature themes and can be unforgiving for new players. It is a poor fit for anyone wanting a guided cinematic campaign, but an excellent fit for friends who want their shared preparation to matter.

14. Dying Light 2 Stay Human: Reloaded Edition

Best for: Players who want an open-world zombie campaign with parkour, combat, and consequential choices.

Players: Online co-op; exact cross-play and progression rules vary by platform and edition.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Dying Light 2 combines fast traversal with zombie combat, an open-world campaign, multiple endings, and decisions that shape the conflict in its post-apocalyptic setting. Co-op gives the game a natural social rhythm: one player can lead a rooftop route while the group handles an encounter, searches a building, or pushes through a night-time objective.

Its story is more conventional than the character-focused adventures at the top of the ranking, but it offers a larger world and a more familiar action-RPG structure. Choose the Reloaded Edition only after checking what content and platform features are included in your region. The game contains mature violence, frightening sequences, and dark post-apocalyptic themes.

15. Borderlands 3

Best for: Groups that want an accessible four-player campaign, constant shooting, and loot progression.

Players: Up to four; cross-platform multiplayer is supported, with platform and account limitations worth checking.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Borderlands 3 offers a structured campaign, a large amount of cooperative combat, character abilities, and a steady stream of weapons. Its story follows the conflict with the Calypso Twins and provides a clear sequence of authored quests, but the writing and character work are not as strong as the best narrative adventures here.

That weakness is less important when the group mainly wants to shoot, level up, compare loot, and experiment with builds. It is easier to recommend to a four-person group than a story game designed strictly for two, and its accessible first-person action makes it a good bridge between a narrative campaign and a systems-led co-op shooter.

Borderlands 3 includes mature humor, violence, and adult themes. Verify the exact cross-platform combination before purchase rather than assuming every console and PC version shares progression or voice features.

16. Tiny Tina’s Wonderlands

Best for: Groups that want lighter, comedic fantasy RPG shooting.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Players: Online and LAN co-op; exact platform support varies.

Rank #4

All you can eat contains a features to allow as many players as possible to join in the food Frenzy! Scalable UI, dyslexia friendly text and colour blindess options are all available

Tiny Tina’s Wonderlands presents its campaign as a tabletop role-playing adventure. The group travels through a fantasy world to stop the Dragon Lord, while the multiclass system lets players combine abilities and build characters with different strengths.

The tabletop framing gives the game a more playful tone than Borderlands 3, and the quest structure is straightforward enough for a group that wants to keep moving rather than debate every moral decision. Its story is humorous and supported by a clear adventure framework, but the main draw remains cooperative combat, character progression, and loot.

Choose it when your group wants fantasy flavor without committing to the slower decision-making of a traditional party RPG. It includes mature humor and violence.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

17. Sea of Thieves

Best for: Crews that want an online pirate world where memorable stories emerge from play.

Players: Online crew-based co-op and multiplayer.

Sea of Thieves is an important caveat on a story-driven list. It offers voyages, exploration, sea battles, monsters, and ongoing shared-world adventures, but it is not built around one conventional campaign in which every group sees the same sequence of scenes. Its strongest stories are episodic and emergent: a voyage goes wrong, another crew appears, a storm separates the ship, or a supposedly simple treasure run becomes a rescue mission.

That makes it excellent for groups that value shared memories over authored character arcs. It is less suitable for players who want a beginning-to-end narrative with a fixed cast and clear finale. Before buying, check the current edition, platform access, online requirements, and any regional subscription conditions.

18. Portal Knights

Best for: Families and younger or less experienced players who want a lighter fantasy sandbox.

What’s actually slowing this PC down?

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Players: Cooperative play; local and online features depend on platform.

Portal Knights blends approachable action-RPG combat with crafting, exploration, character progression, and a fantasy adventure spread across portal-connected environments. Its story is lighter and less character-centered than the games above it, so it belongs near the bottom of this ranking.

Its strengths are accessibility and flexibility. Players can gather resources, improve equipment, explore new areas, and build rather than follow a relentlessly demanding campaign. It is a good option for mixed-skill groups or families that want more structure than a pure building sandbox without the complexity of Divinity or Outward.

19. LEGO Star Wars: The Skywalker Saga

Best for: Family-friendly couch co-op and mixed-skill groups.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Players: Local co-op; verify the exact platform implementation before purchase.

The Skywalker Saga retells the nine main Star Wars films through LEGO humor, accessible action, exploration, character abilities, and a large roster of playable characters. Its story is adapted rather than original, but that does not diminish its value as a shared adventure for families or friends who want low-pressure couch co-op.

The game is forgiving, recognizable, and easy to drop into for short sessions. Players who want branching choices or serious character arcs should look elsewhere; players who want to laugh through familiar scenes while collecting, fighting, and exploring will find a much better fit here than in a demanding RPG.

20. Minecraft Dungeons

Best for: Families and groups seeking a streamlined co-op dungeon crawler.

Free tools Windows power users keep installed

One-click scans. No signup required.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Players: Cooperative multiplayer; the exact player and platform configuration should be confirmed before purchase.

Minecraft Dungeons uses the visual language of Minecraft but plays as a focused action dungeon crawler. The campaign has a clear adventure structure, cooperative combat, equipment upgrades, and a family-friendly presentation, while its narrative remains intentionally lightweight.

That makes it “story-supported” rather than deeply story-driven. The game is a strong introduction to loot, abilities, and dungeon-crawler progression because players can concentrate on moving, fighting, and helping one another instead of managing a complicated party or making irreversible dialogue decisions.

21. Gears 5

Best for: Groups that prioritize dramatic science-fiction action and coordinated shooting.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Players: Three-player campaign support.

Gears 5 has a dedicated narrative campaign, a developed science-fiction setting, dramatic set pieces, and co-op combat that rewards covering lanes and coordinating movement. Its story is more traditional than branching: the main attraction is the campaign’s action, characters, and world-building rather than shared dialogue choices.

It is a particularly good pick when one player wants a story campaign and the others want a substantial shooter. The cover system and enemy pressure give the group clear tactical jobs without requiring the build management of a party RPG. It is not the best choice for couch puzzle play or a quiet interactive drama, but it remains a strong authored co-op campaign for action fans.

22. Halo: The Master Chief Collection

Best for: Players who want several classic science-fiction campaigns in one package.

Best Value

Disney Epic Mickey: Rebrushed - PlayStation 5
  • Explore a reimagined Wasteland, full of Disney's timeless characters and stories

  • Mickey has new moves such as dash, ground pound and sprinting

Players: Extensive co-op across multiple Halo campaigns, but support differs by individual game and platform.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The Master Chief Collection packages multiple authored Halo campaigns, giving a group a large library of science-fiction adventures rather than a single new story. The games range from focused military science fiction to broader conflicts involving the Covenant, Flood, Forerunners, and other factions.

Its main complication is also its most important buying warning: co-op support is not identical across every campaign, platform, or mode. Check the specific Halo title you want to play, whether it supports local or online co-op on your hardware, and whether the other player needs the same package. Do not rely on the collection label alone.

23. Sniper Elite 5

Best for: Two players who want mission-based stealth and tactical teamwork.

Players: Cooperative campaign support for two players; platform features vary.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Sniper Elite 5 offers a World War II campaign organized around missions, infiltration, objectives, and long-range tactical combat. Its story is functional rather than deeply character-centered, but the mission framework gives co-op a clear purpose: players can scout different approaches, coordinate shots, distract enemies, and decide whether to remain hidden or improvise when a plan breaks down.

It is a better recommendation for stealth-minded players than for anyone seeking branching role-playing choices. The pleasure is in executing a plan together, adapting to patrols, and completing objectives with different levels of noise and risk.

24. Warhammer 40,000: Darktide

Best for: Four-player groups that want lore-rich, atmosphere-driven combat.

Players: Four-player co-op.

Darktide is set in the Warhammer 40,000 universe and is built around intense missions against overwhelming enemies. It offers strong atmosphere, class-based combat, progression, and a setting full of grim science-fiction lore, but it is more mission- and combat-driven than character-driven.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

That distinction is important. The game can satisfy players who want to inhabit a distinctive world and learn its factions, but it should not be sold as a traditional narrative campaign with extensive dialogue choices or a constantly advancing personal story. Pick it for coordinated action, repeatable missions, and setting; choose Gears 5 or Halo for a more conventional authored shooter campaign.

25. Monster Hunter: World

Best for: Groups that want long-term progression, ecological investigation, and demanding hunts.

Players: Cooperative online action RPG; story progression has notable co-op friction.

Monster Hunter: World has an authored ecological setting, investigation structure, recurring characters, and a long progression loop built around tracking and hunting enormous creatures. Preparing equipment, learning a monster’s behavior, gathering materials, and crafting better gear can create some of the most satisfying long-term co-op in the genre.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

It comes with a major warning: story cutscenes and quest progression can require players to discover certain scenes separately before they can join one another. A pair cannot always start every story mission together from the beginning. That friction makes it a weaker recommendation for players who want a seamless shared narrative, even though the hunts themselves are excellent co-op experiences.

Choose Monster Hunter: World for the hunt-and-improve loop, not for uninterrupted story co-op. Check the current platform version and online requirements before buying.

How to choose the right game

Choose by group size

  • Exactly two players: Start with Split Fiction, It Takes Two, A Way Out, or Portal 2. These games are designed around a pair rather than asking a two-person group to fill out a larger party.
  • Three or four players: Baldur’s Gate 3, Divinity: Original Sin 2, Borderlands 3, Gears 5, Darktide, and Remnant II are better fits. Check the exact player limit for the platform version.
  • A changing online crew: Sea of Thieves is more flexible than a tightly scripted campaign, while Minecraft Dungeons and Borderlands 3 provide simpler drop-in-style action structures.
  • A living-room audience: The Quarry and the Dark Pictures games work even when not everyone wants constant controller time. LEGO Star Wars, Portal Knights, and Minecraft Dungeons are safer family-oriented choices.

Local versus online co-op

Do not assume that a game advertised as “co-op” supports the kind of session you have planned. Split-screen and shared-screen play are particularly important for It Takes Two, A Way Out, The Quarry, Outward, and some versions of Portal 2, while many RPGs and shooters prioritize online play. Local co-op may require two compatible controllers, and online co-op may require platform accounts, an internet connection, and a subscription or service requirement depending on the console and region.

For PC, check whether the store listing says online co-op, LAN co-op, Remote Play Together, split-screen, or shared-screen. These labels describe different setups. On consoles, verify the individual edition rather than relying on a franchise-wide assumption: Halo campaigns, Dark Pictures modes, Monster Hunter progression, and cross-play features are not uniform across every platform.

Before you buy

  • Confirm the exact platform, edition, and region for every player.
  • Check whether both players need to own the game or whether a Friend’s Pass, family-sharing feature, or other invitation system applies.
  • Verify the maximum player count and whether the campaign itself supports that number. Some games have four-player multiplayer but story missions designed around fewer players.
  • Check cross-play separately from cross-progression. A game may connect different platforms without sharing saves, or may restrict cross-play to particular combinations.
  • For local play, make sure the console or PC supports the required number of compatible controllers.
  • For horror, crime, zombie, and mature RPG games, check content warnings before inviting younger players.
  • Do not use a current price, review percentage, or subscription listing as evergreen information. Store pricing, stock, regional editions, and online-service terms change.

Final recommendation

For two people starting today, choose Split Fiction if you want the newest and most mechanically inventive dedicated co-op story, or It Takes Two if accessibility and relationship-focused storytelling matter most. Choose A Way Out for a more linear drama and Portal 2 for puzzles. Groups willing to commit to a large campaign should choose Baldur’s Gate 3 or Divinity: Original Sin 2. If the group mainly wants to create stories through exploration, combat, or survival, Grounded, Remnant II, Outward, and Sea of Thieves are better described as hybrid co-op adventures than pure story games.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the best story-driven co-op game?

Split Fiction is the best overall choice because it is built specifically for two players, combines online and split-screen play, and constantly changes its mechanics and setting. It Takes Two is a close alternative, especially for couples or less experienced players.

What are the best co-op story games for two players?

It Takes Two and A Way Out are the strongest purpose-built two-player choices. Portal 2 is better if you want communication-heavy puzzles, while Split Fiction is better if you want a newer adventure with more mechanical variety.

Which story-driven co-op games are best for three or four players?

Baldur’s Gate 3 and Divinity: Original Sin 2 – Definitive Edition support groups of up to four and let players make consequential decisions together. Borderlands 3, Gears 5, Warhammer 40,000: Darktide, and Remnant II are stronger choices when combat is more important than dialogue and role-playing.

What are the best couch co-op story games?

It Takes Two, A Way Out, Portal 2, The Quarry, Outward, LEGO Star Wars: The Skywalker Saga, and some editions of the Dark Pictures games support local or shared-screen play. Confirm the exact platform version and the number of controllers required before purchase.

Which co-op story games have important multiplayer limitations?

Monster Hunter: World has an authored setting and excellent cooperative hunts, but story cutscenes and quest progression can require players to discover scenes separately before joining. It is best treated as a co-op hunting RPG with story elements rather than a seamless shared campaign.

The Bottom Line

Bottom line: Split Fiction is the strongest overall story-driven co-op recommendation, It Takes Two is the easiest choice for couples and couch co-op, and Baldur’s Gate 3 is the best long-form RPG. Check the exact platform, edition, player count, local/online mode, and mature-content rating before buying.
