2025 delivered a crowded and unusually varied games calendar: major sequels, long-awaited remasters, new console flagships, high-profile indie breakthroughs, and several releases that became important because of how they changed the conversation around the year. This is a retrospective of the 50 biggest games associated with the 2025 release cycle, not an objective sales chart or a universal ranking.

The selection combines franchise recognition, publisher investment, platform importance, expected audience, cultural visibility, and eventual release-cycle impact. Dates are U.S. or global dates where available, and platform availability can vary by region, edition, and storefront. Early-access launches, remasters, PC debuts, and major platform editions are labeled so they are not mistaken for entirely new games.

The 50 biggest game releases of 2025, month by month

The numbers below identify the 50 entries; they are not a ranked list from 1 to 50. The list focuses on games that either launched during 2025 or were significant parts of the year’s release cycle.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Counting note: The Alters appeared twice in some early versions of the release list, so it is included only once here. To preserve a 50-game editorial set without incorrectly calling Grand Theft Auto VI, Fable, or Hollow Knight: Silksong 2025 launches, the final entry is Kunitsu-Gami: Path of the Goddess as a 2025 platform edition. It is clearly marked because it was not a brand-new 2025 original release.

  13. Kunitsu-Gami: Path of the Goddess — 2025 platform edition; date and platform availability vary by territory.
This is the list’s one platform-edition inclusion rather than a brand-new 2025 original launch. It preserves the 50-game count while avoiding a duplicate entry for The Alters.

The launches that best represented 2025

A release can be “big” for different reasons. Some games carried the weight of a global franchise; others mattered because they introduced a new platform, expanded a series into a new genre, or demonstrated that an original project could dominate the year’s discussion.

Monster Hunter Wilds was the clearest blockbuster

Monster Hunter Wilds combined Capcom’s mainline Monster Hunter status with a simultaneous PC and current-generation console launch. Its importance was not just the size of the franchise: it was one of the few 2025 games that clearly functioned as a large-scale, cross-platform event. PlayStation’s February release coverage also confirmed its February 28 date and post-launch support.

Assassin’s Creed Shadows finally delivered Ubisoft’s Japan setting

Assassin’s Creed Shadows had extra visibility because it was both a flagship franchise entry and a delayed project. Its feudal-Japan setting had been a long-running point of audience interest, while the move from its earlier 2024 schedule meant that its March launch represented a significant moment for Ubisoft’s release calendar.

Split Fiction showed that co-op remained a major event format

Hazelight’s Split Fiction was not simply another multiplayer release. It followed the unusually visible success of It Takes Two with another purpose-built cooperative adventure, keeping two-player design at the center of the conversation during a spring packed with much larger franchises.

Doom: The Dark Ages changed the series’ visual frame

Doom: The Dark Ages was a notable release because id Software treated the familiar Doom formula as a medieval-inflected prequel rather than repeating the exact modern-metal presentation of its recent entries. Its PC, PS5, and Xbox Series X|S launch also made it one of the year’s most prominent multiplatform action games.

Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 was the breakthrough original RPG

Sandfall Interactive’s debut was one of the strongest counterexamples to the idea that only established intellectual property could define 2025. Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 arrived on PC, PS5, and Xbox Series X|S and became one of the year’s most acclaimed releases, giving the calendar an original role-playing game with major visibility.

Death Stranding 2 made the PS5-only strategy visible

Death Stranding 2: On the Beach was a major PS5-only release in a year when platform strategy was especially visible. Its June 26 launch was accompanied by officially announced standard and collector products, making it relevant both as a Kojima Productions sequel and as one of the year’s most conspicuous premium console releases.

Mario Kart World helped define Switch 2’s launch window

Mario Kart World was one of the clearest reasons for an existing Nintendo audience to pay attention to Switch 2. Nintendo listed it as a Switch 2 game dated June 26, placing the evergreen racing franchise directly in the system’s launch-window lineup.

Pokémon Legends: Z-A and the Switch 2 editions broadened Nintendo’s second half

Pokémon Legends: Z-A was significant on its own as a major Pokémon release, but its Switch and Switch 2 Edition availability also illustrated Nintendo’s transition strategy: important games could support the original Switch audience while offering a version tailored to the newer hardware.

The Outer Worlds 2 strengthened Xbox’s subscription-led RPG strategy

Obsidian’s The Outer Worlds 2 was one of the year’s biggest role-playing releases and another example of Xbox using a day-one Game Pass launch to make a major first-party game available to its existing subscription audience on PC and Xbox.

Call of Duty: Black Ops 7 remained a yearly industry anchor

Whatever else changed in the 2025 calendar, Call of Duty: Black Ops 7 remained an annual anchor. Its November launch placed one of the industry’s largest shooter brands at the center of the holiday period and gave the year a familiar commercial finale.

The game that reshaped 2025 expectations without launching in 2025

Other major expectations that should not be mislabeled as 2025 launches

  • Fable appeared in early-2025 preview coverage with its release still listed as TBC 2025. Without a later official confirmation of a 2025 launch, it should be described as an anticipated project, not a 2025 release.
  • Hollow Knight: Silksong was another major anticipated title. Anticipation alone is not evidence of a 2025 launch, so it should not be added to a release list without a final official date.
  • Assassin’s Creed Shadows is included because it did launch in 2025, but its earlier delay shows why old preview calendars cannot be copied forward unchanged.
  • Borderlands 4 demonstrates the same problem from a different angle: earlier preview material listed a later September date, while the final launch date was September 12.
  • Ghost of Yōtei was initially announced only for 2025 before its October 2 date was established. A release window and a final date are not interchangeable.

What to check before buying one of these games

This calendar includes several different kinds of releases, and the distinction affects what a buyer is actually getting.

  • Early access: inZOI and Schedule I entered early access. Their 2025 dates mark public availability, not necessarily a final 1.0 version.
  • Remasters and remakes: Tales of Graces f Remastered, Xenoblade Chronicles X: Definitive Edition, The Last of Us Part II Remastered, Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 3 + 4, Final Fantasy Tactics: The Ivalice Chronicles, and Metal Gear Solid Delta: Snake Eater are substantial modern releases, but they are not wholly new underlying games.
  • Platform editions: Stellar Blade is a PC expansion of an existing PlayStation release, while Pokémon Legends: Z-A and Metroid Prime 4: Beyond have Switch 2 editions. Check the specific edition before assuming the same version exists on every platform.
  • Console exclusivity: Mario Kart World, Donkey Kong Bananza, and Kirby Air Riders are tied to Nintendo Switch 2, while Death Stranding 2: On the Beach launched on PS5.
  • Regional availability: listed platforms and physical editions can differ between the United States, Europe, Japan, and other markets. A console version, collector’s product, or retail listing may not be available in every territory.

A focused shopping checklist for the platform-heavy releases

If you are choosing purchases rather than simply tracking the calendar, the most relevant hardware and edition questions are concentrated in a few parts of the list:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • For Mario Kart World, Donkey Kong Bananza, Kirby Air Riders, and Switch 2 editions of other games, check the Nintendo Switch 2 model, bundle, and storage requirements for your region.
  • For Donkey Kong Bananza, Nintendo has also associated the game with the Donkey Kong and Pauline amiibo. Treat amiibo availability as a separate product question rather than assuming it is included with the game.
  • For the cross-platform releases, compare the platform you already own before buying a second copy. Monster Hunter Wilds and Metal Gear Solid Delta: Snake Eater are available across PC and current-generation consoles, but the exact physical and digital editions can differ by territory.
  • For collectors, PlayStation officially announced a Death Stranding 2 Collector’s Edition. Verify stock, contents, price, and regional availability before treating it as an alternative to the standard PS5 game.

These are release-specific buying considerations, not a recommendation to purchase every game on the list. Physical stock, bundles, collector products, and amiibo can change after launch.

How this list should be read

The 50 entries are best understood as a map of the 2025 release cycle. They include obvious global blockbusters such as Monster Hunter Wilds, Call of Duty: Black Ops 7, and Pokémon Legends: Z-A; platform-defining games such as Mario Kart World; major sequels and remakes; annual sports franchises; and original projects such as Clair Obscur: Expedition 33, Blue Prince, and The Alters.

They are not presented as a sales ranking, review ranking, or list of the 50 objectively best games. A game’s place here reflects its scale, visibility, franchise importance, platform role, or effect on the year’s discussion. Release dates and launch status take priority over early anticipation: that is why GTA VI, Fable, and Silksong are treated separately rather than incorrectly counted as 2025 releases.

Is this a ranked list of the 50 best-selling games of 2025?

No. It is an editorial selection based on franchise recognition, publisher investment, platform importance, audience expectations, cultural visibility, and release-cycle impact. The numbers identify entries chronologically rather than ranking them.

Which games on the list were early-access releases?

inZOI launched in PC early access on March 28, and Schedule I entered PC early access on March 24. Those dates indicate public early-access availability rather than a final 1.0 release.

Which 2025 releases require Nintendo Switch 2?

Mario Kart World, Donkey Kong Bananza, and Kirby Air Riders are listed as Nintendo Switch 2 releases. Pokémon Legends: Z-A and Metroid Prime 4: Beyond also have Switch 2 editions, while some other games remain available on the original Switch.

The Bottom Line

2025’s biggest game story was not one single genre or platform. It was a release cycle that paired blockbuster sequels such as Monster Hunter Wilds and Call of Duty: Black Ops 7 with platform launches such as Mario Kart World, major remakes, ambitious new games such as Clair Obscur: Expedition 33, and delayed projects whose absence mattered almost as much as the games that arrived. Read the dates as confirmed launch information, and the selection as an editorial measure of importance—not a definitive ranking of quality or sales.
