The Aether is a sky-dimension mod for Minecraft Java Edition. To install it safely, create a profile for the exact Minecraft version, choose the loader required by the Aether file (Fabric, Forge, or NeoForge), and keep the mod file, loader, server and every client on the same version stack. The current project listings include Minecraft 1.21.1 Fabric and NeoForge builds, while the official README identifies stable releases for several 1.19.x and 1.20.x versions.
Godlike.Host offers modded Minecraft server hosting with one-click modpacks, a built-in mod installer and up to three free backups a day.
After installation, the dimension is reached through a Glowstone frame activated with water. Back up an important world, test the mod in a fresh profile, and avoid unfinished bleeding-edge builds unless you are deliberately testing them.

What the Aether mod adds
The Aether is maintained by The Aether Team and is built around a floating sky dimension rather than a conventional underground or surface biome. Its official README describes floating islands, new ores, mythical creatures and dangerous dungeons, with progression and resources that make the dimension a separate survival challenge.
The project describes itself as the original Aether mod, updated for modern Minecraft versions and fully compatible with multiplayer. That compatibility does not mean any installation can connect automatically: multiplayer works only when the server and all clients use a matching Minecraft version, loader and Aether build.

Which Minecraft versions and loaders work?
Compatibility belongs to an individual downloadable file, not to the Aether name in general. Check the file’s Minecraft version and loader before creating a profile. The project pages change over time, so treat the versions below as a dated snapshot and verify the current file listing when you install.
| Minecraft version | Aether file or status identified in the project listings | Loader information | Date or qualification |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1.21.1 | Version 1.5.11 | Fabric | CurseForge listing dated October 3, 2025 |
| 1.21.1 | Version 1.5.10 | NeoForge | CurseForge listing dated September 28, 2025 |
| 1.20.x | Older files are listed | Loader and exact build vary by file | Open the individual project file for the precise match |
| 1.19.x | Older files are listed | Loader and exact build vary by file | Open the individual project file for the precise match |
The official README separately names stable release targets for Minecraft 1.19.2, 1.19.4, 1.20.1, 1.20.2 and 1.20.4 on Modrinth and CurseForge. A stable target is different from a file merely appearing in a listing, so use the project’s release label and loader metadata together.

Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteA January 18, 2026 CurseForge FAQ says the original mod works up to Minecraft 1.21.1 as of that writing. That statement is time-bound; newer files may appear later, and an older file may remain the correct choice for an existing world. Do not install a 1.21.1 jar into a 1.20.1 profile, even if both are described as compatible with Aether.
Fabric, Forge and NeoForge are not interchangeable
A mod jar compiled for Fabric requires a Fabric profile; a NeoForge jar requires NeoForge; and a Forge-specific file requires Forge. The loader is part of the compatibility requirement. Selecting the right Minecraft number but the wrong loader produces a failed launch or a missing-mod error.

Before installing: protect your world and choose a profile
- Back up important saves. Copy the world before opening it with a new mod or a new Minecraft version. Keep the backup outside the active saves directory so an in-game mistake cannot overwrite it.
- Choose one target version. Decide whether you are starting on 1.21.1, one of the stable 1.20.x targets, or a supported 1.19.x release. Do not build a profile around a version that the selected Aether file does not name.
- Choose one loader. Read the file metadata and select Fabric, Forge or NeoForge accordingly. Do not mix loader-specific jars in one profile.
- Create a fresh instance. A separate profile keeps Aether’s configuration and mods away from an established installation and gives you a safe place to make a test world.
- Decide between a stable release and an experimental build. The README identifies stable releases and warns that bleeding-edge CircleCI builds are unfinished and may contain serious issues. Use a stable file for a normal survival world.
Install Aether with the CurseForge App
The app handles the instance directory and loader selection, but you still need to confirm the exact version and file metadata.
- Open the CurseForge App and create a new Minecraft profile, or select an existing profile that you are willing to dedicate to Aether.
- Set the profile to the exact Minecraft version required by the Aether file. For example, a 1.21.1 file belongs in a 1.21.1 profile, not a general 1.21 profile.
- Set the profile’s mod loader to the file’s loader: Fabric, Forge or NeoForge.
- Search for Aether and select the verified project published by TheAetherTeam. Check the author, Minecraft version, loader and release number before adding it.
- Install the selected Aether file and any dependency the project page explicitly marks as required for that loader and version. Do not add unrelated mods during the first launch.
- Launch the profile once. At the title screen, open the Mods screen and confirm that Aether appears.
- Create a disposable test world and enter it before importing a long-running save. This confirms that the instance loads and that the portal and dimension can be reached in your configuration.
The app’s profile may use a different directory from the standard game directory. If you later troubleshoot manually, open the profile’s own folder rather than copying files into an unrelated global .minecraft directory.

Manual installation gives you direct control over the profile, but every component must be matched by hand.
- Install the loader version required by the Aether file for the exact Minecraft version you selected.
- Launch that loader profile once and close the game. This creates the profile’s folders and confirms that the loader itself works before a mod is added.
- Download the Aether
.jarfrom the verified TheAetherTeam project on CurseForge or Modrinth. Check the file’s Minecraft version, loader and release number; do not rely on the filename alone. - Open the
modsfolder belonging to that loader profile. If it does not exist, create a folder namedmodsin the profile directory. - Copy the Aether
.jarinto that folder without extracting it or renaming its extension. - Start the same loader profile again and open the Mods screen. Aether should be listed before you test a world.
- Create a new test world. Only after the test succeeds should you consider adding Aether to a backed-up survival save.
If you use more than one instance, each instance has its own mods folder. Putting the jar in the wrong profile can make the mod appear to be missing even though the download is correct.

How to make and activate the Aether portal
The official portal recipe is a Glowstone frame activated with water. Build the frame in the Overworld, then use water on the frame as the activation step described by the project. Entering the activated portal transports the player to the Aether dimension.
- Gather Glowstone and enough ordinary Overworld supplies to survive the first trip.
- Construct the Glowstone frame in a clear, safe location. The project description establishes the material and activation method; it does not require you to copy a special portal found in a generated structure.
- Use water on the completed frame to light the portal.
- Enter only after checking that you have food, tools and a way to return or recover items.
If water does not activate the frame, verify that the mod is actually loaded in the current profile and that every frame block is the required Glowstone. A portal built in an unmodded profile cannot function as an Aether gateway.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteWhat to bring for your first visit
The Aether is not simply a decorative alternate sky. Treat it as a separate survival progression with its own ores, resources, creatures and dungeon encounters.
- Food: Bring more than you expect to need. The new dimension should not be your only source of food while you are learning its terrain.
- Basic tools and spare materials: Carry replacements so a broken pickaxe or weapon does not end an expedition.
- Building blocks: Floating islands and dangerous drops make temporary bridges, platforms and barriers useful.
- Storage and recovery planning: Leave valuable Overworld equipment in a secure chest or bring only what you can afford to lose during the test run.
- A return plan: Make a note of the portal location and keep the entrance area clear enough to find when you return.
Explore cautiously. Floating islands create fall hazards, hostile creatures can interrupt mining, and dungeons are intended as perilous encounters rather than safe resource rooms. Gather the dimension’s ores and materials gradually instead of rushing into the hardest structure on the first visit.

Multiplayer setup
The Aether Team states that the mod is fully compatible with multiplayer. In practice, compatibility means that the dedicated server and every connecting client must share the same stack:
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →| Component | What must match |
|---|---|
| Minecraft | The exact game version, such as 1.21.1 or 1.20.4 |
| Loader | The same loader family and compatible loader version: Fabric, Forge or NeoForge |
| Aether | The same Aether release/build on the server and each client |
| Other mods | Any server-required or client-required dependencies must also be present where their documentation requires them |
- Install the selected loader on the server for the target Minecraft version.
- Place the same Aether jar used by the clients in the server’s
modsfolder. - Install the matching loader profile and Aether build on every player’s computer.
- Start the server once and read its log for missing dependencies or version errors before inviting players.
- Have each player launch the matching profile and connect only after the server has loaded the mod successfully.
A client with a different Aether build, Minecraft number or loader is not a compatible multiplayer participant, even if both installations display an Aether title. When updating, change the server and all clients as one planned update and keep a world backup first.
Stable releases versus bleeding-edge builds
The official README distinguishes stable release builds from bleeding-edge CircleCI builds. Stable files are the appropriate choice for a normal world because they are presented as releases for named Minecraft versions. The README warns that bleeding-edge builds are unfinished and may contain serious issues.
Use an experimental build only in a disposable profile and test world. Keep it separate from a survival save, record the exact build number, and expect that a future build may change behavior or fail to load. A backup protects the world data; it does not make an unfinished build safe to use on the only copy of a save.

Troubleshooting launch and connection failures
The game crashes before the title screen
- Check the three-way match: Minecraft version, loader and Aether file. This is the first check because the project files are loader- and version-specific.
- Remove unrelated mods and launch with only the loader, Aether and any dependency explicitly required by that file.
- Read the crash report and loader log for the named mod, missing dependency or unsupported version.
- Recreate the profile if the loader itself was installed for a different Minecraft version than the Aether jar.
There is no single universal fix for every crash. If the minimal profile works, add other mods one at a time until the conflicting component is identified. If the minimal profile fails, replace the Aether file with the verified release for the exact loader and Minecraft version.
Aether does not appear in the Mods screen
- Confirm that the jar is inside the active profile’s
modsfolder, not another instance’s folder. - Confirm that the profile is running the loader named by the jar.
- Check that the download completed as a
.jarand was not left inside a compressed archive. - Verify that the file’s Minecraft version matches the profile.
The portal will not activate
Check that every frame block is Glowstone, that water is being used as the activation step, and that you are testing in the profile where Aether appears in the Mods screen. A portal-like frame in an unmodded world is only a structure until the mod is loaded.
A friend cannot join the server
Compare the server and the player’s exact Minecraft version, loader and Aether build. Have the player remove an extra or older Aether jar, then launch the profile again. Server logs can identify a missing dependency or a rejected mod version; changing random files on only one side usually makes the mismatch harder to diagnose.
Updating or changing versions safely
- Record the current Minecraft version, loader and Aether build.
- Back up the world and keep the old profile intact.
- Create a new profile for the target version instead of overwriting the working one.
- Install the target loader and matching Aether file, then test in a new world.
- Open the backed-up survival world only after the test profile loads and the project identifies that version as supported.
Moving a world between Minecraft versions or release channels can alter world data. A separate profile lets you return to the original installation if the new version does not behave as expected.
How popular is the project?
CurseForge metadata displayed with the October 3, 2025 project update recorded 79,709,529 total downloads. That is a platform download count, not a guarantee that a particular file is compatible with your installation; the individual file’s Minecraft version and loader remain the deciding factors.
