Verdict: Best Buy’s Asus ROG Strix G16 (2025) deal was genuine, but the headline price of $1,599.99 belonged to a promotion reported on August 25, 2025. The matching Best Buy listing was later indexed at $1,799.99, and its displayed promotion had ended. Treat $1,599.99 as the compelling target price—not as a currently verified offer.
The exact configuration is the G614PR-G16.R95070TI, Best Buy SKU 6613956. It combines a Ryzen 9 8940HX, RTX 5070 Ti Laptop GPU, 16GB RAM, a 1TB SSD and a 16-inch 1920×1200 165Hz display.

What the original $400 discount included
Notebookcheck reported on August 25, 2025 that Best Buy had reduced this configuration from a claimed $1,999.99 to $1,599.99—a $400 reduction. That was a dated retail promotion, not proof that the same price remains available.

Why $1,599.99 was an attractive price
The RTX 5070 Ti is the main reason to consider this machine. It sits above the RTX 5070 Laptop GPU in Nvidia’s mobile lineup and includes 12GB of GDDR7 memory. Asus’s 140W configuration gives the GPU a substantially higher power ceiling than thin-and-light implementations, although real performance still depends on cooling, drivers, graphics mode, game settings and workload.
The large chassis also makes more sense for sustained gaming than an ultra-thin design. The Ryzen 9 8940HX’s 16 cores and 32 threads provide plenty of headroom for gaming while streaming, compiling, rendering or running other demanding applications. That does not make the laptop portable in the conventional sense, but it does make it a credible desktop replacement.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →The 165Hz refresh rate is well suited to competitive and fast-moving games at 1920×1200. The resolution is also less demanding than 2560×1600, which can help the RTX 5070 Ti drive high refresh rates without relying as heavily on upscaling.
The compromises that keep this configuration cheaper
The screen is functional, not premium
The discounted model uses a 1920×1200 165Hz IPS panel listed at 300 nits. Other G614 variants offer 2560×1600 resolution, 240Hz refresh rates, wider color coverage and Pantone validation, but those specifications should not be assigned to this SKU. “ROG Strix G16” is a product family, not a guarantee of the premium Nebula display.
For gaming, the included screen is sensible. For photo work, video editing or other color-sensitive tasks, buyers may prefer an external monitor or a higher-end G16 configuration.
16GB of RAM is adequate, but not especially future-proof
Sixteen gigabytes remains usable for many games, but demanding new titles, extensive mods, content-creation applications and heavy multitasking can benefit from 32GB. Asus lists two DDR5 SO-DIMM slots for the G614 family, so an upgrade is possible, but it is not included in the sale price and should be budgeted separately.
It is heavy before adding the charger
At roughly 5.51lb before the power adapter, this is a desktop-replacement laptop. The total travel load is materially higher once the charger is added. It is a poor fit for someone who expects an easy daily commute or frequent travel.
Expect best performance while plugged in
Notebookcheck’s deal coverage reports a 90Wh battery for the platform, but that capacity does not establish a particular runtime for this exact retail configuration. High-performance gaming laptops generally deliver their strongest CPU and GPU performance on AC power. Buyers who prioritize long unplugged sessions should not choose this model based on battery capacity alone.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Upgrade options
Asus lists two DDR5 SO-DIMM slots and two M.2 PCIe slots for the G614 family. That gives the laptop a useful path to more memory and storage, including a potential 32GB memory upgrade or a second NVMe drive. Confirm the installed layout, drive compatibility and warranty implications before opening the machine.
Who should buy it?
- Buy at or near $1,599.99: Desktop-replacement gamers who want RTX 5070 Ti performance, a high-power chassis and upgradeable internals.
- Consider it for an external monitor: Buyers who like the hardware but want a better panel for creative work or high-resolution gaming.
- Be cautious at $1,799.99: At that price, compare newer laptops or alternatives offering 32GB RAM, a 2.5K display, a newer processor or stronger warranty terms.
- Look elsewhere: Travelers, students who carry a laptop all day, and buyers who need strong battery life or a quiet, lightweight machine.
What to check before ordering
- Confirm the listing identifies G614PR-G16.R95070TI or Best Buy SKU 6613956.
- Verify the CPU is the Ryzen 9 8940HX and the GPU is the RTX 5070 Ti—not a similarly named G16 with different hardware.
- Confirm the panel is 1920×1200 at 165Hz if you are comparing prices against this deal.
- Check the live price in your cart, along with stock, shipping, pickup availability and seller information.
- Price any RAM or SSD upgrades separately. Optional Geek Squad Protection plans are not part of the laptop’s base price.
Bottom line
The Asus ROG Strix G16 configuration covered by the original deal was a strong value at $1,599.99: its RTX 5070 Ti, Ryzen 9 8940HX and upgradeable chassis offer substantial performance for the money. The trade-off is a heavy body, 16GB of RAM and a relatively modest 1920×1200 display.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsAt $1,799.99 or higher, the purchase becomes much less automatic. Compare the current price with laptops offering 32GB memory or a 2560×1600 panel, and do not treat the old “$400 cheaper” headline as a current Best Buy promotion unless the price is confirmed at checkout.
