Verdict: The Lenovo LOQ 15APH8 with a Ryzen 7 7840HS and RTX 4050 is a strong value-oriented 1080p gaming laptop, especially after upgrading its unusually poor 8 GB single-channel memory configuration. It delivers good CPU performance, credible 1080p frame rates, upgradeable storage and reasonable battery life. However, its plastic chassis, loud fans, limited-gamut 144 Hz display and missing premium connectivity make it a budget alternative to a Legion—not a cheaper Legion.
Most importantly, this verdict applies to the exact configuration tested by Notebookcheck. “LOQ 15” covers multiple CPUs, GPUs, screens, memory configurations and power limits, so verify the complete machine type before buying.

The exact Lenovo LOQ 15 configuration reviewed
The test unit was the Lenovo LOQ 15APH8, configured as follows:

LOQ versus Legion: what the name actually means
The LOQ resembles Lenovo’s gaming laptops closely enough to invite Legion comparisons. Its rear cooling extension, angular styling and general feature set recall Legion machines and the IdeaPad Gaming line that preceded it. But the product positioning is different.
LOQ is Lenovo’s value gaming range. Legion generally sits higher in the lineup, with more premium materials, stronger chassis refinement, better display options and, depending on the configuration, more aggressive sustained performance. Similar processors or graphics cards do not make two laptops equivalent. Cooling, power limits, memory configuration, screen quality, keyboard, ports and firmware all affect the experience.
The fair description is therefore “a lower-cost laptop borrowing some Legion design ideas,” not “a cheap Legion.” The LOQ’s plastic construction and compromises are part of how it reaches a lower price.

The Ryzen 7 7840HS is an AMD Zen 4 mobile processor with eight cores and 16 threads. AMD lists a boost clock of up to 5.1 GHz, although a laptop’s sustained behavior depends on its power mode, cooling, firmware and ambient temperature.
In Notebookcheck’s testing of this LOQ, the processor scored:
- Cinebench R15 multi-core: 2,710 points
- Cinebench R15 single-core: 278 points
- Geekbench 5.5 single-core: 1,837 points
- 7-Zip: 6,343 MIPS
During a sustained Prime95 test, the CPU eventually settled near 4.7 GHz and approximately 80°C. These are measurements of this particular laptop rather than guarantees for every 7840HS system, but they show why the processor is attractive for the price. It is well suited to gaming alongside a discrete GPU, compiling code, office work, multitasking and other heavily threaded workloads.
RTX 4050 gaming performance
The RTX 4050 Laptop GPU, not the Ryzen processor alone, determines most game performance. In the tested LOQ it ran at a measured 95 W and produced sensible 1080p results.
Notebookcheck recorded the following results in Shadow of the Tomb Raider at 1920×1080:

That makes the laptop a good match for 1080p high-settings gaming, with DLSS or another upscaling mode available when a demanding game needs it. Modern AAA titles should generally be approached as 60-fps-class games at sensible settings rather than as native 1440p ultra experiences. Heavy ray tracing and high-resolution gaming are better suited to a faster GPU.

The 8 GB memory configuration is a bigger problem than the average frame rates suggest. Many tested games remained playable, but demanding titles including F1 22 and Returnal could crash at ultra settings because of memory limitations. Buy this configuration only if you plan to move to at least 16 GB, ideally in dual-channel mode.
The 144 Hz display is the major compromise
The tested screen is a 15.6-inch 1080p IPS panel with a 144 Hz refresh rate. It is usable for ordinary gaming and schoolwork, but its specifications are not premium:

- Approximately 329 cd/m² average brightness
- About 60.2% sRGB coverage
- About 40.2% Display P3 coverage
- About 41.5% AdobeRGB coverage
- Approximately 24.5 ms black-to-white response time
- No PWM detected in the cited test
The narrow color gamut makes colors look less rich than they do on a proper full-sRGB display. The relatively slow response time can also produce visible ghosting in fast competitive games. A 144 Hz label alone does not guarantee a fast or high-quality gaming panel.
The LOQ 15APH8 family also offered a 1440p/165 Hz option with approximately 100% sRGB coverage, alongside a weaker 1080p/60 Hz option. Verify the exact resolution, brightness, gamut and refresh rate before buying.
The tested panel is acceptable for gaming and general productivity. It is a poor choice for color-critical photo, video or design work unless you connect a suitable external monitor. For competitive shooters, investigate response-time behavior rather than relying on refresh rate alone.
Build quality and everyday handling
The chassis is predominantly ABS plastic. Notebookcheck found more flex around the palm rest and keyboard center than on many comparable Legion models, although the machine remained sufficiently solid for its budget category.
The large rear section supports cooling but makes the LOQ bulky compared with slimmer budget laptops. It weighs about 2.45 kg before the charger, opens to roughly 160 degrees and uses matte surfaces that are relatively easy to keep clean. There is no fingerprint reader in the tested unit.
This is not a fragile laptop, but neither is it a premium-feeling one. Buyers who want a rigid metal-heavy chassis, better acoustic refinement or a lighter machine should look beyond the LOQ.
Cooling is adequate, but gaming is loud
The LOQ uses twin fans and three heat pipes. Its cooling system keeps the components within reasonable temperatures, but it does so audibly:
- The Witcher 3: approximately 46 dB(A) in Performance mode and 44 dB(A) in Balanced mode
- Combined CPU/GPU stress: approximately 52 dB(A)
- GPU temperature in The Witcher 3: about 75°C in Performance mode
- Maximum measured bottom temperature under stress: about 52°C
Balanced mode mainly reduces CPU power and performance, with less effect on GPU behavior in the review. The palm rest and touchpad remain comparatively cool, but the fans are plainly audible during gaming.

A stand that improves airflow may help maintain consistent operation, but no accessory should be expected to transform the laptop’s performance or noise profile.
Battery life
The 60 Wh battery is smaller than the 70 Wh-or-larger batteries found in some competing 15-inch gaming laptops. Notebookcheck measured approximately 7.5 hours of WLAN browsing, which is respectable for this class.
That figure is one lab result, not an all-day guarantee. Brightness, browser tabs, wireless conditions, refresh rate, battery health and power mode all affect endurance. Gaming on battery is a different scenario: performance, fan behavior and discrete-GPU availability can change substantially, so do not interpret the browsing result as gaming battery life.
Ports and wireless
The reviewed system included:
- USB-C 3.2 Gen 2 with DisplayPort 1.4 and Power Delivery
- Rear USB-A 3.2 Gen 2
- Additional USB-A ports
- HDMI 2.1
- Gigabit Ethernet
- 3.5 mm headset jack
- Camera privacy switch
The notable omissions are USB4, Thunderbolt and built-in Wi-Fi 6E/6 GHz support. “Wi-Fi 6” should not be interpreted as Wi-Fi 6E.

A community discussion associated with the review suggests that the HDMI and USB-C display outputs may be wired to the discrete GPU on this platform. Treat that as a configuration-specific observation requiring confirmation, not as a universal official specification.

The reviewed machine has two SODIMM slots and two M.2 SSD slots, with user-upgradeable memory and storage. Confirm those details against the exact machine type before applying them to another LOQ listing.
The factory 8 GB single-channel configuration is the clearest weakness. A practical upgrade path is:
- 16 GB dual-channel: the minimum sensible target for modern gaming and everyday use
- 32 GB: worthwhile for development, emulation, heavy multitasking and content creation
- Second M.2 SSD: useful for large game libraries and media files if the exact machine supports the additional drive
Disassembly is more involved than on some laptops because the rear section must be removed before the bottom panel. The tested unit used 13 Phillips screws across the bottom and rear sections. Check the service procedure, supported memory specification and warranty terms before opening the machine.

What to check before buying
- Identify the full model code. “LOQ 15” is not specific enough. The reviewed platform is 15APH8.
- Verify the GPU. An RTX 4050, RTX 4060 and integrated graphics version are very different gaming laptops. Check the GPU power limit where available.
- Check installed RAM and channel mode. Prefer 16 GB dual-channel, or budget immediately for a compatible upgrade.
- Confirm the panel. Check resolution, refresh rate, brightness and color coverage—not just “144 Hz.”
- Check storage expansion. Verify whether the exact machine has the second M.2 slot and whether mounting hardware is included.
- Check warranty and returns. The review unit carried a one-year limited US warranty, but retailer and regional terms vary.
- Check the price against newer RTX 4060 systems. A higher-class GPU may be better value if the price gap is small.
How it compares with alternatives
Lenovo Legion
Choose a Legion when the price premium buys a better display, stronger chassis, quieter operation, improved cooling or a faster GPU. Do not assume every Legion is faster: the exact CPU, GPU, power limit and configuration still matter.
ASUS TUF A15
The TUF A15 is a direct budget competitor. The review’s cited comparison found a tested TUF panel with substantially broader sRGB coverage than the LOQ’s 1080p screen, but TUF specifications vary widely by SKU. Check the display and GPU power limit carefully.
Dell G15
The Dell G15 can appeal to buyers who value a larger cooling design and upgradeability, but it is typically bulky. Compare the actual GPU, screen and price rather than the family name.
HP Victus 15
Victus models can be lighter and cheaper, but some configurations compromise on the screen, memory or GPU. Choose one only when the price advantage is meaningful and the complete specification is better suited to your needs.

These families can offer lower prices or lighter designs, but their GPU power limits, chassis rigidity, cooling and displays vary substantially. An RTX 4060 label does not automatically mean higher performance if the GPU is heavily power-constrained.
Who should buy the Lenovo LOQ 15?
The LOQ 15APH8 makes sense for a budget-conscious gamer, student or productivity user who wants strong 1080p performance and is comfortable with a plastic chassis and audible fans. It is especially attractive when equipped with 16 GB RAM, when the screen is confirmed to be the better panel, and when it is meaningfully cheaper than a comparable Legion.
Skip it, or choose a different configuration, if you need a color-accurate built-in screen, quiet gaming, premium materials, Thunderbolt or USB4, Wi-Fi 6E, a lighter chassis, or sustained high-end performance. Also be cautious if its price approaches newer RTX 4060 laptops.
The original review described a price of roughly $1,000 in July 2023. That is historical context, not a current 2026 price. This older platform may now appear as clearance, refurbished or open-box stock, making battery health, warranty and return rights particularly important.
