The AYN Thor’s original pre-order announcement is no longer current. AYN opened pre-orders at 9:30 p.m. Eastern Time on August 25, 2025, with launch prices starting at $249. AYN now lists the handheld as the AYN Thor (Batch 7 Pre-order), with a displayed starting price of $259 for the Lite configuration and shipping scheduled to start in August 2026.
That makes the Thor still interesting, but buyers should not treat the old “tonight” headline, launch specifications, or launch prices as a live offer. The current Batch 7 listing has a different lineup and lists UFS 3.1 storage across all configurations.

- NO PRELOAD GAMES - Please note that no games are preloaded on Retroid Pocket 5. Before first use or after a long period of inactivity, the RP5 may enter battery protection mode. In this mode, you need to charge the RP5 for at least 8 hrs to wake the battery. Then you can charge the device normally.
- Powerful Performance – Equipped with a high-performance quad-core processor and advanced GPU, the Retroid Pocket 5 delivers smooth gameplay for retro and modern indie titles, and more with ease, ensuring lag-free gameplay.
- Vibrant 5.5" Touchscreen – Enjoy crisp, vivid visuals on the 5.5-inch HD touchscreen display, offering intuitive controls and an immersive gaming experience on the go.
- Ergonomic & Portable Design – Designed for comfort, the lightweight and pocket-friendly body features responsive controls and a sleek matte finish, making it ideal for long gaming sessions while being easy to carry anywhere.
- Extensive Game Compatibility – Preloaded with Android OS, it supports thousands of games via emulators and app stores, and cloud gaming services.
The pricing was surprising because the Thor combined a dual-screen design with Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 hardware at a relatively low entry price. The $249 Lite was only $20 above the $229 Retroid Pocket Flip 2 price cited in the launch coverage, while the $429 Max was well below the $599–$639 pricing reported for the AYANEO Pocket DS campaign at the time.
Those are historical comparisons, not current market prices. The products had different storage, campaign terms, shipping arrangements, warranties, and availability, so the figures should not be treated as a perfectly like-for-like value test.
What AYN sells in Batch 7
AYN’s current Thor product page lists five selectable configurations:
Recommended Free Tools
| Model | RAM | Storage | Processor |
|---|---|---|---|
| Lite | 8GB | 128GB | Snapdragon 865 |
| Base | 8GB | 128GB | Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 |
| Pro | 12GB | 256GB | Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 |
| Max | 16GB | 512GB | Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 |
| Max | 16GB | 1TB | Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 |
The page displays a $259 starting/default price associated with the displayed Lite selection. It does not expose a dependable complete current price table in the rendered information, so select the exact model and confirm its price at checkout before deciding. Do not assume that every configuration costs $259.
The important hardware change: UFS 3.1, not the launch-era UFS 4.0 description
Original 2025 coverage described UFS 4.0 storage for the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 models. AYN’s present Batch 7 listing says the available models use UFS 3.1. That is the specification buyers should use for a current order.

Is the Thor actually affordable after checkout?
The product price is only the starting point. AYN’s shipping policy says listed prices exclude shipping, remote shipping fees, and taxes. Your real cost is therefore:
- Selected Thor configuration price
- Shipping charge and any remote-area fee
- Applicable taxes or other checkout charges
- Optional case, screen protector, charger, or other accessories
- Potential microSD card cost if internal storage is limited
Before paying, record the selected model, product price, shipping method, taxes, and final total. AYN lists DHL transit at approximately 3–7 working days under normal conditions and Standard 4PX at approximately 15–20 days, with longer estimates for some countries. These are transit estimates after dispatch, not guaranteed delivery dates, and they do not remove the possibility of manufacturing or pre-order delays.
AYN currently says Batch 7 shipping starts in August 2026. That is a batch-level starting window, not a promise that a newly placed order will ship immediately or that every configuration will leave on the same day. AYN’s shipping dashboard shows fulfillment activity through August 15, 2026 for earlier Thor orders across Base, Pro, Lite, and Max variants, but that is evidence of progress rather than a guarantee for a new order.

Which Thor model should you buy?
Thor Lite: the cheapest way into the dual-screen design
Choose the Lite if the second display and clamshell form factor matter more than maximum performance. Its Snapdragon 865, 8GB RAM, and 128GB UFS 3.1 storage are suitable for basic Android gaming and older emulation, but leave less headroom for demanding games, Switch emulation, or Windows-emulation experiments.
Thor Base: the performance-value option
The Base pairs 8GB RAM and 128GB storage with Snapdragon 8 Gen 2. It is the sensible choice for buyers who want the newer processor and can use a microSD card or maintain a smaller internal library. Its main compromises are limited internal storage and the current UFS 3.1 specification.
Thor Pro: the balanced configuration
The Pro adds 12GB RAM and 256GB storage without changing the processor. It makes more sense for demanding emulation, multitasking, and longer-term use than the Base, although 256GB can still fill quickly with large Android games, texture packs, and multiple emulator libraries.
Thor Max 512GB: more room without 1TB pricing
The Max 512GB combines 16GB RAM with more internal storage for buyers who do not want to manage a microSD card or pay for 1TB. It is a later Batch 7 configuration, not the same Max configuration described in the original launch coverage. Verify its live price before comparing it with the 1TB model.
Thor Max 1TB: convenience, not a faster CPU
The Max 1TB is for enthusiasts who want maximum internal capacity. It uses the same Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 platform as the Base, Pro, and Max 512GB, so the premium primarily buys RAM and storage convenience rather than a faster processor. Compare its checkout price with the Max 512GB plus a high-capacity microSD card.

What the second screen can—and cannot—do
The Thor’s defining feature is useful only when software supports it. Some games or emulators may use the lower display for maps, controls, menus, or a second gameplay view. Other apps may ignore it, mirror content, stretch awkwardly across both screens, or require manual configuration.
Launch coverage also discussed a Thor Control Center intended to make use of the lower screen. However, current firmware behavior and compatibility should be verified rather than assumed. The Thor is not automatically a drop-in replacement for every Nintendo DS or 3DS setup: the quality of the experience depends on the emulator, game, layout options, touchscreen behavior, and control mapping.
Likewise, Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 makes the Base, Pro, and Max more promising for demanding emulation, but it does not prove that every Switch title or Windows-emulation workload will run well. Those claims require current, model-specific testing.

The Retroid Pocket Flip 2 remains a useful single-screen clamshell reference point, while the AYANEO Pocket DS is the most obvious historical dual-screen comparison. The original Thor coverage compared launch-era prices with both devices, but current alternative pricing, stock, shipping, warranty, and return terms should be checked independently before calling either one a better deal.

Warranty, returns, and software expectations
AYN’s current product page states that the Thor includes a one-year warranty. The purchase is still a direct-from-manufacturer pre-order, so buyers who prioritize guaranteed delivery, local retail support, or effortless returns may prefer a more established retail channel.
AYN’s refund policy says customers have 15 days after receiving the item to request a return, subject to conditions involving the device’s condition, packaging, proof of purchase, and other policy requirements. Review the complete policy before ordering.
No games are preinstalled. Buyers must account for Android compatibility, emulator setup, their own game ownership, and legal ROM sourcing. The Thor’s dual-screen hardware does not remove those setup requirements.

Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsThe Bottom Line
The AYN Thor’s original $249–$429 launch pricing was unusually aggressive, but the “pre-orders open tonight” story belongs to August 25, 2025. The current product is Batch 7: it adds a Max 512GB option, lists UFS 3.1 rather than the launch-era UFS 4.0 specification, and excludes shipping and taxes from the headline price. Choose the model based on processor, RAM, storage, and your need for dual-screen software support—and judge the deal by the final checkout total, not the $259 starting figure.
