The most dependable Valheim base is layered: prevent spawns inside the settlement, slow attackers with a moat or raised earth, stop them at a stakewall or stone wall, and force the survivors through one bridge or gate. Keep portals, storage, beds, crafting stations, and livestock behind that first perimeter. Add protected firing positions and roof-edge coverage as flying threats and tougher raids appear.
No single wall is a complete answer. The right design changes with your boss progress, biome, terrain, available materials, and willingness to repair damage after every event.

How Valheim base attacks actually defeat defenses
A raid is dangerous for two different reasons: enemies can approach from outside, and creatures or raid enemies may appear in an area that was never properly covered. Treat those as separate engineering problems. A high wall does nothing about an unprotected farm beyond it, while perfect spawn control cannot stop a troll from pounding the only gate.
Stop unwanted spawns inside the settlement
Workbench coverage is the foundation of spawn control. The practical method is to place temporary workbenches in a grid so their coverage circles overlap across the entire build area. Include fields, animal pens, docks, roof terraces, and any strip of ground behind a wall. Once the coverage is confirmed, hide or replace visible stations with concealed campfires, torches, or appropriately placed wards so the finished base does not look like a construction site. These measures help prevent creatures and raid enemies from appearing inside protected areas; they are not a substitute for a perimeter against enemies that enter from outside.

Do not assume the main hall is enough. A single uncovered corner beside a boar pen can become the point where an enemy appears, and a farm outside the wall can draw a raid away from your controlled entrance. Recheck coverage whenever you extend a building, flatten a slope, add a dock, or move an animal enclosure.
Plan for the raid rules that change with progression
Raid checks take your defeated bosses, the biome, and your proximity to a base into account. As a result, a layout that was comfortable early on may become inadequate after a major boss or a move into a more hostile biome. Revisit the perimeter, gate, roofline, and livestock protection after each major progression milestone instead of waiting for the first disastrous event.

The table uses qualitative ratings because the game does not provide one universal cost or durability figure for every build. “Low” and “high” describe the relative burden and performance of each method in normal construction, not a measured numerical test.
| Method | Resource and build burden | Ground-raid reliability | Large-enemy protection | Aerial coverage | Repair and expansion | Terrain requirement |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Workbench or concealed spawn control | Low material cost; time spent mapping coverage | Prevents many internal appearances when coverage overlaps | Does not stop an enemy that enters from outside | Does not cover an exposed roof or upper edge by itself | Easy to extend; coverage must be checked after changes | Works on almost any site |
| Moat or trench | Low material cost; substantial digging time | High when enemies cannot find a walkable route across | Strong delay against ground attackers; geometry matters | None | Little structural repair; difficult to retrofit neatly | Needs diggable ground and room outside the wall |
| Raised earth bank | Low material cost; repeated hoe work | High as an obstacle or inner backing layer | Good when high and continuous, but vulnerable to awkward slopes | None | Usually easy to reshape; expansion can be visually intrusive | Requires soil that can be raised |
| Stakewall | Low to moderate early-game materials; quick to place | Moderate as a first perimeter | Useful against ordinary ground attackers, less reassuring against heavy impacts | None | Fast to repair but regularly damaged during attacks | Most sites; needs a reasonably continuous line |
| Stone wall | High material and hauling burden | High as the inner permanent barrier | Better resistance and separation from large enemies | None | More expensive to alter, but a clear long-term perimeter | Needs a stable foundation and substantial stone supply |
| Bridge, gate, or narrow chokepoint | Low to moderate, depending on the design | High because attackers contact one controlled area | Useful only if the opening and approach are wide enough to manage | None unless paired with firing positions | Simple to maintain; can constrain traffic and future expansion | Best where a moat or natural obstacle leaves one crossing |
| Ballista and protected firing positions | Specialized materials, ammunition, and construction | Supplementary; cannot replace a perimeter | Useful against targets with a clear line of fire | Provides an answer to elevated or airborne approaches | Needs ammunition and inspection after attacks; vulnerable if exposed | Requires sightlines and a protected platform |
Build a reliable early-game perimeter
Early defenses should be cheap enough to repair and compact enough to finish before the next raid. A small, well-covered compound is safer than a sprawling settlement with gaps.
1. Choose a site you can shape
Look for a relatively level area near the resources and water you use most, but leave room beyond the planned wall for a trench. A cliff, steep shoreline, or natural rock formation can provide one side of the perimeter. Avoid building so close to a slope that attackers can stand above the wall or walk around the end of a moat. Mark the eventual gate before placing permanent buildings.
2. Map overlapping workbench coverage
- Place temporary workbenches around the full footprint, including farms, animal pens, work yards, and the ground between buildings.
- Walk the perimeter and look for uncovered pockets, especially behind corners, under raised structures, and along the outer side of a dock.
- Move stations until their coverage overlaps rather than merely touching at a single uncertain point.
- Replace visible temporary stations with concealed campfires, torches, or suitable wards where that fits the settlement and does not create a fire or access problem.
- Keep a few spare workbenches available so you can test coverage after an expansion or rebuild.
Spawn control is most valuable when it covers the whole compound. Protecting only the sleeping room leaves every external production area as a possible failure point.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3. Add a shallow moat or raised-earth lip
Use the hoe to cut a shallow trench outside the intended wall, or raise an earth lip on the interior side when digging is impractical. The purpose is distance and path disruption, not an ornamental ditch. Keep the bottom and sides continuous enough that enemies cannot simply stroll around a short section. Leave one deliberate crossing for your bridge or gate.

A moat is resource-efficient because the terrain supplies most of the barrier, but it consumes space and is awkward to add after houses, roads, and trees fill the site. Raised earth is easier to blend into a compact compound and can support an inner wall, though repeated reshaping may be visible.
4. Place a compact stakewall
Stakewalls are the fast early-game structural layer. Put them on the inner edge of the trench or immediately behind the raised bank, not several building lengths away where a breach exposes the entire settlement. Follow the ground closely and check both ends for walkable bypasses. Leave enough clearance inside for repairs and for defenders to move without being trapped against the wall.
After an attack, walk the entire line and repair damaged stakes. A section that looks intact from the gate may be one hit from failure on the far side.
5. Make one entrance and move valuables inward
Use one narrow bridge, gate, or ramp as the normal entrance. Place storage, portals, beds, crafting stations, and the most important animals behind a second line or at least well away from the opening. If the outer layer fails, enemies should still have to cross a controlled space before reaching anything irreplaceable.
Upgrade the compound for the mid game
Mid-game construction should preserve the useful geometry of the early layout while replacing weak pieces rather than demolishing everything at once.
Replace the inner stake line with stone
Stone is the clearer permanent perimeter when you can supply it. Keep the moat or earth bank outside, then build the stone wall on the protected side. This combination gives attackers a terrain problem before they reach the stronger material. It also gives you time to repair or reposition defenders without standing directly beside the enemy.
Build a short test section first. Check that the foundation follows the ground, that corners do not leave a walkable notch, and that the gate or bridge still aligns with your approach. Then extend the wall in sections so an unfinished rebuild does not leave the whole settlement open.

Deepen the approach, not just the wall
When an outer trench is too shallow to matter, widening and deepening it usually adds more value than making the wall taller. The goal is to keep ground attackers from reaching the wall in a broad, simultaneous front. Retain an inner earth bank where the terrain allows it; it creates another layer and can make a stone wall easier to position.
Cover every production area
Farms and animal pens often expand after the house is finished. Extend spawn-control coverage before moving animals or planting a large field, and connect the enclosure to the same defensive logic as the main hall. A pen outside the moat is a separate asset that a raid can reach even when the central house is secure.
Shape a controllable gatehouse
Keep the bridge or gate narrow enough that attackers arrive in a manageable stream, but wide enough for your own carts, boats, and emergency movement. Put a small protected platform beside the opening so you can fight without standing in the path. Do not create several decorative side doors that turn a chokepoint into a ring of weak spots.
Design late-game and hostile-biome defenses
Later raids justify two or more complete layers: an outer moat or raised-earth obstacle, an inner stone wall, one controlled crossing, and protected positions from which you can engage enemies. The settlement should still function when the gate is closed.

Ground barriers leave roof openings, balconies, towers, and raised terrain exposed. Enclose open roof sections where practical, add stakes near upper edges, and provide a covered route between buildings. Inspect these areas after every raid because impacts can reduce durability even when the wall below appears untouched.
Use ballistas as a supplement
Ballistas are most useful where they have a clear line of fire and cannot be reached immediately by ground attackers. Build them on protected platforms with safe access for loading and maintenance. They require ammunition and do not solve a broken moat, an open gate, or an uncovered spawn pocket. Treat them as specialized coverage for large or airborne threats, not as the main perimeter.
Separate critical assets into an inner core
Create an inner storage and portal room, then place ordinary workshops and less valuable materials closer to the outer ring. This is a practical recovery measure: a breach may damage the perimeter without exposing every item, bed, or portal at once. Keep livestock away from the outer wall and especially away from roof edges or open yards that flying enemies can reach.

Threat-specific adjustments
Trolls and other large ground attackers
Large enemies punish thin, isolated barriers. Give them terrain to cross before they reach the wall, keep valuable buildings away from the perimeter, and avoid placing the gate directly against a major structure. A second inner line buys time if the first wall is damaged. Fight from a protected side position rather than standing on the gate threshold where a single impact can damage both you and the entrance.
Flying attackers
Flying enemies ignore the pathing problem that makes a moat effective. Cover open courtyards, upper walkways, and livestock areas; add stakes or protected firing positions along roof edges; and ensure there is no uncovered patch inside the workbench network. After an event, inspect roofs, beams, and animal enclosures for damage even if the ground perimeter held.
Enemies that appear inside
When an enemy is found behind an intact wall, first check spawn-control coverage rather than rebuilding the wall. Look for a new field, a demolished campfire, a moved workbench, or a small strip of terrain excluded by the latest extension. Restore overlapping coverage, then repair any internal structures before the next event.
Three practical layouts
Compact early compound
- Overlapping workbench coverage across a small house, farm, and pen.
- A shallow moat or raised-earth lip on the exposed sides.
- A single stakewall and one narrow gate.
- Storage and beds in the center, not against the wall.
This layout is quick to build and easy to repair. Its limitations are weaker resistance to sustained large-enemy impacts and no dedicated answer to aerial approaches.
Mid-game ring with a controlled bridge
- An outer trench wide enough to prevent a direct walk to the wall.
- An inner earth bank supporting a stone perimeter.
- One bridge or gatehouse with a defender’s platform.
- Workbench or concealed-fire coverage extending through farms and animal pens.
- A central core for portals, storage, and sleeping space.
The ring costs more time and stone but gives a predictable fight and a clear upgrade path.
Late-game layered settlement
- Outer terrain obstacle shaped to remove alternate approaches.
- Continuous inner stone wall with a deliberately limited entrance.
- Protected roof edges, enclosed courtyards, and covered livestock areas.
- Ballistas or other firing positions with clear sightlines and safe access.
- An inner core separated from workshops and the outer gate.
This design supports hostile biomes and stronger raid combinations, but it constrains expansion and demands regular inspections.

- Walk the outer terrain obstacle and confirm there is no newly opened shortcut around an end, corner, or bridge.
- Inspect every stake, stone segment, gate, bridge piece, and foundation for reduced durability.
- Check roof edges, towers, balconies, and animal enclosures for impact damage.
- Verify that campfires, torches, wards, and workbenches still provide overlapping coverage after repairs or remodeling.
- Replace lost ammunition and confirm that ballistas have an unobstructed firing line.
- Move valuable items back into the inner core if a temporary breach forced an emergency relocation.
Troubleshoot common defense failures
“Enemies spawned inside my wall.”
Map the entire build footprint with temporary workbenches. Include the exact spot where the enemy appeared and any recently added farm, dock, or pen. Restore overlap with concealed campfires, torches, or suitable wards, then test again before expanding.
“The moat did not stop the raid.”
Look for a walkable section at the ends, a shallow crossing, a natural slope that lets enemies reach the wall, or an unplanned bridge created by landscaping. Widen or deepen the approach and leave only one intentional crossing.
“The wall holds, but my animals die.”
Move the pen inside the protected footprint, verify spawn control around it, and cover exposed roofs or upper edges. A pen outside the main ring is not protected merely because the house is.
“My ballista is useless during a raid.”
Check line of sight, ammunition, and the platform’s exposure. If attackers can reach the machine before it can fire, move it behind the stone layer or treat it as a secondary position while the moat and gate do the primary work.
“Expansion keeps creating weak spots.”
Extend the outer obstacle and spawn-control grid before adding the building. Preserve one controlled entrance, keep the inner core separate, and avoid punching new doors through the wall for convenience.

How to choose between a moat, wall, or both
Choose a moat or raised earth first when materials are scarce, the site has room, and you can shape the terrain before the settlement grows. Choose a stone wall first when the site is compact, the perimeter must look permanent, or expansion has already made large-scale digging impractical. Use both whenever the settlement contains valuable portals, storage, livestock, or production that would be difficult to replace.
Stakewalls remain the sensible fast layer for a new outpost or temporary foothold. They are not a complete late-game answer because they need repairs and provide no aerial coverage. Ballistas become worthwhile only after the ground approach, gate, and roofline have been made defensible.
The best design is therefore not the tallest wall. It is a settlement in which enemies have no interior spawn pocket, no easy route around the perimeter, one predictable place to cross, and several layers between that crossing and anything you cannot afford to lose.
