For a straightforward early Fighter setup in Dragon’s Dogma 2, use a sword and shield with Shield Bash, Airward Slash, and Compass Slash, plus the Mettle augment for physical defense. Play around guarding and creating openings rather than trying to fight at range. It’s a flexible starting template—not a proven optimal build—and you can change vocations at a vocation guild if you want to experiment.
What the Fighter is built to do
Fighter is a close-quarters vocation centered on sword-and-shield combat. Capcom describes its role as alternating between advancing on enemies and protecting companions; a carefully timed block can deflect an attack. That makes reading enemy moves and choosing when to defend as important as attacking. Capcom’s Adventuring Basics manual explains the vocation and its fundamentals.
Fighter is not a ranged damage dealer. Its reach is limited to melee, so enemies outside that reach—especially airborne foes—can be awkward to handle alone. This setup gives you tools for nearby threats and a way to reach flying targets, but positioning and party support still matter.
Beginner Fighter build
| Slot | Recommendation | What it does |
|---|---|---|
| Weapon and defense | Sword and shield | Supports the Fighter’s close-range attacks and defensive play. |
| Skill | Shield Bash | Can knock an opponent off balance, interrupt pressure, and create room to reposition. |
| Skill | Airward Slash | Helps you attack flying enemies that are difficult to reach with ordinary ground attacks. |
| Skill | Compass Slash | Provides coverage against nearby groups. |
| Augment | Mettle | Raises physical defense, making it a useful defensive choice for a beginner. |
This skill and augment combination is recommended in Samuel Tolbert’s Windows Central Fighter guide, published March 22, 2024. Treat it as a practical loadout to start with, not a current patch-verified tier list: later skill changes have not been confirmed here. Skill availability and upgrades depend on progression, and exact unlock ranks are not established by that guide.

How to play the build
- Watch for an attack. Keep your shield ready and learn the timing of the enemy’s move instead of trading hits indiscriminately.
- Guard or deflect, then take the opening. A well-timed block can deflect an attack. Follow an opening with a short sword attack, or use Shield Bash when you need to disrupt an opponent and make space.
- Choose the skill for the threat. Use Compass Slash when nearby enemies crowd you; use Airward Slash when a flying target is in reach.
- Reposition when the fight is out of reach. Don’t chase distant or airborne enemies as if Fighter had a bow. Move toward a safer melee opening, or let a party member handle the target.
The point is to control the pace of close combat: defend, recognize an opening, and use a suitable attack. Shield Bash can help create that opening, but it does not remove the Fighter’s limited reach.
Build a party around the Fighter’s gaps
Capcom’s PlayStation page describes parties of up to three Pawn companions and notes that varied vocations create different tactical options. For this melee-focused setup, a Mage can provide healing while an Archer can attack distant or airborne threats—recommendations also made in the Windows Central guide. Those roles give the party tools the Fighter does not have, rather than turning the Fighter into a ranged attacker.

- What You Get: Anker USB-C Hub (5-in-1, 4K HDMI), welcome guide, 18-month warranty, and our friendly customer service.
Capcom’s descriptions of the Fighter, Archer, Thief, and Mage vocations reflect different approaches: shield-oriented melee, long-range attacks, mobility, and healing or support. Choose companions based on the coverage you want; there is no need to make Fighter outperform every other vocation at every role.
Can you change vocations later?
Yes. Capcom says you can change your vocation at a vocation guild, so choosing Fighter does not lock you into it. You can try another vocation if you want more range or a different style of combat. Augments can also be equipped across vocations after they are unlocked, letting experimentation contribute options to later builds. See Capcom’s official manual for the vocation system.

How current is this recommendation?
The named loadout comes from a guide published in March 2024. The available information does not establish whether later updates changed these skills or their relative strength, so this is best read as an accessible starting point rather than a claim about the strongest build on the current patch. The official manual supports the core sword-and-shield role and vocation flexibility; the specific skill and party recommendations are editorial advice, not official balance rules.
