For Windows PC and Xbox-style compatibility, choose the Xbox Wireless Controller. For multi-device use and customization, the 8BitDo Ultimate 2 Bluetooth is the stronger value. Phone-first players should look at the Backbone Pro or GameSir G8 Plus instead of a conventional gamepad.
That distinction matters: a standard Bluetooth gamepad, a USB-C telescopic controller, and a controller with Bluetooth plus a 2.4GHz receiver solve different problems.

The Xbox Wireless Controller is the safest default for a Windows PC user who wants familiar controls and minimal compatibility trouble. Its asymmetrical layout, XInput behavior, USB-C wired connection and 3.5mm headset jack work particularly well with Windows games.
#1 Best Overall
- Compatible with Windows and Android.
- 1000Hz Polling Rate (for 2.4G and wired connection)
- Hall Effect joysticks and Hall triggers. Wear-resistant metal joystick rings.
- Extra R4/L4 bumpers. Custom button mapping without using software. Turbo function.
- Refined bumpers and D-pad. Light but tactile.
It also supports Bluetooth on compatible PCs and mobile devices. That does not mean ordinary Bluetooth connects it directly to an Xbox console. Xbox consoles use Xbox Wireless; check for the appropriate Xbox support or adapter instead. Microsoft lists Robot White and Carbon Black versions at $64.99 in the US, while some colors cost more. Check the official listing.
Choose it if: you mainly play on Windows, Xbox or mobile and want the most familiar Xbox-style experience.
Skip it if: you require Hall Effect sticks, rear buttons or an internal rechargeable battery. Its replaceable AA batteries are convenient to swap but less elegant than USB-C charging.

The 8BitDo Ultimate 2 Bluetooth is the better fit for players moving between PC, Mac, phones, tablets and other supported devices. Hall Effect sticks and official customization software add value beyond the basic Xbox pad, including remapping and adjustments for supported sticks, triggers and vibration.
Check the exact connection modes before ordering. The similarly named Ultimate 2C and Ultimate 2 Wireless are different products, and features can change with the platform or mode. Xbox-console compatibility should never be assumed unless the exact model is officially supported. The 8BitDo store listed the Ultimate 2 Bluetooth at $69.99 when the supplied research was captured. Verify the model and current price.
Choose it if: you want customization, Hall Effect sticks and broad device flexibility.
Skip it if: you want a first-party Windows/Xbox setup with no model-selection homework.

Best budget option: 8BitDo Ultimate 2C
The Ultimate 2C is an appealing low-cost PC controller and a sensible second pad. The captured 8BitDo listing showed the PC version at $29.99. However, the PC-oriented product name is important: do not present it as a universal Bluetooth controller without checking the exact regional model and its supported devices.
It is best for casual PC gaming, local multiplayer and buyers who value price over premium materials, extensive profiles and broad console support. Confirm the exact Ultimate 2C variant before buying.
Best symmetrical layout and retro controller: 8BitDo Pro 3
The 8BitDo Pro 3 suits players who prefer both sticks aligned in a symmetrical PlayStation-style arrangement. Its traditional D-pad also makes it a compelling choice for retro games and emulation, while Bluetooth support and customization improve its usefulness beyond a single platform.
Physical layout and button labeling are separate issues. A symmetrical controller can still display a different A/B or X/Y arrangement from the prompts shown by a game. Windows and Xbox-style titles may therefore require Steam Input, remapping or a period of adjustment. The captured listing showed the Pro 3 Bluetooth Gamepad at $69.99; the Pro 2 was shown at $54.99 before a displayed sale price of $44.99. Check the current model listing.
Best premium phone hybrid: Backbone Pro
The Backbone Pro is for people who want a phone-mounted controller without giving up wireless use with other screens. It offers direct USB-C handheld play and Bluetooth Low Energy wireless play, plus full-size ALPS thumbsticks, Hall Effect triggers, rear buttons, remapping profiles and a 3.5mm headset jack. Backbone advertises up to 40 hours of battery life, a manufacturer claim rather than an independent test result.
Direct USB-C play can remove the controller’s Bluetooth link from the chain, but it cannot eliminate network delay during cloud gaming or remote play. USB-C phone support also does not guarantee that every case fits. Backbone lists the standard model at $169.99 and the Xbox Edition at $179.99. The Xbox Edition includes one month of Xbox Game Pass Ultimate for eligible new members under the offer’s terms, currently shown as expiring March 31, 2028. See Backbone Pro and the Xbox Edition terms.
Backbone+ subscription features should be separated from the hardware. The controller can work with compatible games and supported remote-play applications without treating every app feature as part of the physical product. Review Backbone’s platform information.

Best large-grip mobile controller: GameSir G8 Plus
The GameSir G8 Plus takes the opposite approach from a slim telescopic controller. Its larger, conventional grips are better suited to long mobile, cloud-gaming and remote-play sessions, especially for players who find narrow phone controllers uncomfortable.
The trade-off is portability. Check the phone-size range, camera clearance and case compatibility before buying. Bluetooth also adds pairing and battery management compared with a direct USB-C controller. Current secondary coverage positions it as a comfort-focused option, but the supplied research did not verify a current official price.
Best compact Bluetooth mobile controller: Turtle Beach Atom
The Turtle Beach Atom is a compact Bluetooth option for travel and occasional mobile or cloud gaming. Its small split-controller design stores easily, but compactness can reduce grip comfort. TechRadar’s current coverage identifies separate iOS and Android variants, so select the correct operating-system version rather than assuming interchangeability. Check the current platform and model details.
Best for PS5 owners: DualSense
PS5 owners should start with the DualSense because it is the natural controller for PlayStation hardware and PS Remote Play. Bluetooth makes it useful on compatible PCs, Macs and mobile devices, but the signature haptics and adaptive triggers are not universal outside PS5. Individual games and operating systems may expose only basic buttons, vibration or standard triggers.
It is therefore a strong PS5-first recommendation, not automatically the simplest all-purpose PC purchase. Verify support in the specific game you intend to play.

What “Bluetooth controller” actually means
Read the connection specification, not just the word wireless:
- Bluetooth-only: pairs directly with supported phones, computers, tablets and TVs, but may not offer the lowest-latency wireless mode.
- Bluetooth plus USB: supports wireless play and a wired fallback, often useful for charging or troubleshooting.
- Bluetooth plus 2.4GHz: uses a USB receiver for potentially lower and more consistent latency on compatible PCs, while retaining Bluetooth for mobile devices.
- Bluetooth plus proprietary console wireless: may work with phones and PCs over Bluetooth but use a separate system for console play. Xbox Wireless is the key example.
- USB-C telescopic: plugs directly into a phone and may not contain Bluetooth at all. The standard Backbone One is a direct-connect controller, not a Bluetooth model.
- Hybrid mobile: combines direct USB-C phone play with Bluetooth wireless use. Backbone Pro is the clearest example.
Standard gamepad or phone-mounted controller?
| Form factor | Best for | Advantages | Limitations |
|---|---|---|---|
| Standard gamepad | Several screens, PC, TV and tablets | Better grips, longer battery options, broad use | Needs a phone stand or clip |
| Telescopic plug-in | Portable direct phone play | Phone and controls become one handheld unit; no Bluetooth pairing | Connector, case and phone-size restrictions |
| Hybrid Bluetooth/mobile | Phone play plus TV, tablet or PC use | Direct mode and wireless flexibility | Usually costs more and still needs charging |
Lightning and USB-C are different purchases. USB-C models fit newer USB-C iPhones and compatible Android phones, but not older Lightning iPhones. Wireless Bluetooth avoids that connector mismatch, at the cost of pairing and battery management.

Compatibility: pairing is not the same as full support
Use these labels when evaluating a controller:
- Pairs with: the device accepts the Bluetooth connection.
- Recognized by: the operating system or input layer sees the controller.
- Fully supported: the game or service provides expected prompts, vibration, motion, audio and remapping behavior.
| Platform or service | What to expect |
|---|---|
| Windows PC | Xbox-style XInput controllers are usually the safest. Steam Input can translate many other layouts; native games and launchers vary. |
| macOS | Bluetooth pairing may work, but game recognition and button labels depend on the individual game. Steam Input can help. |
| SteamOS and Steam Deck | Bluetooth often works, while advanced features may not. A 2.4GHz receiver may require a dock or USB-C hub. |
| Android phones and tablets | Standard Bluetooth pads are broadly useful; mobile games still need native controller support. |
| USB-C iPhone and iPad | USB-C telescopic models can be convenient, subject to case and clearance limits. Bluetooth is the more flexible option for other screens. |
| Lightning iPhone | Requires a Lightning-compatible direct controller or Bluetooth. |
| Apple TV and smart TVs | Bluetooth pairing may work, but menus, apps, rumble and headset features vary by platform. |
| Xbox consoles | Do not assume ordinary Bluetooth support. Look for Xbox Wireless, “Designed for Xbox,” a supported adapter or wired operation. |
| PlayStation consoles | Use officially supported PlayStation controllers or verify the exact third-party model. Bluetooth pairing alone is not a compatibility guarantee. |
| Nintendo Switch and newer Nintendo hardware | Check the exact controller edition and Nintendo hardware support; similarly named models can differ. |
| Xbox Cloud Gaming | Compatible Bluetooth, USB and mobile controllers can work, but device, browser and game support vary. Network latency remains separate. |
| PlayStation Remote Play | DualSense is the safest PS5-first choice; other controllers may work where the device and app support them. |
| Steam Link and GeForce Now | Controller support depends on the host, client, browser and operating system. Steam Input can provide a translation layer in some setups. |
| Apple Arcade and Netflix Games | Many games support standard Bluetooth controllers, but support is game-specific. Check the game’s listing and expected button layout. |
Bluetooth, 2.4GHz or wired?
Bluetooth is convenient and usually adequate for turn-based games, RPGs, platformers and much ordinary cloud gaming. Competitive shooters, rhythm games and fighting games can benefit from wired USB or a good 2.4GHz receiver. Wired is not automatically perfect, but it removes the controller’s wireless link.
Bluetooth version numbers alone do not prove low latency. Implementation, polling behavior, operating-system support and the game’s input handling matter more. In cloud gaming, network delay and unstable Wi-Fi can exceed the controller’s own input delay. Wired’s controller coverage discusses the Bluetooth-versus-2.4GHz trade-off and Xbox’s proprietary wireless system.
Features worth paying for
Hall Effect sticks
Hall Effect sensors can reduce the mechanical wear associated with conventional potentiometer sticks. They do not make a controller failure-proof: calibration, firmware, dead-zone tuning, button mechanisms, triggers and manufacturing defects can still cause problems.
Rear buttons and remapping
Rear buttons help in shooters, racing games and accessibility setups by letting you perform actions without releasing a stick. Confirm whether profiles are stored on the controller or require an app, whether remapping works on every platform, and whether macros are permitted in the games you play. 8BitDo’s software supports remapping and other adjustments on supported devices, but feature availability is mode-specific.

Battery and audio
Compare built-in rechargeable batteries with replaceable AAs, included charging docks, USB-C charging and battery life in Bluetooth versus 2.4GHz mode. Check whether the controller works while charging. A phone-mounted controller may draw power from the phone in direct-connect mode; another may need its own battery. The Backbone Pro includes a 3.5mm headset jack and supports Bluetooth audio through the connected phone, according to Backbone’s product information.
Best Value
- WIDE SCREEN COMPATIBILITY — PHONE TO TABLET: X5 Lite is a versatile phone controller that stretches up to 213mm to fit iPhone 15/16, most Android phones, iPad mini 6/7, and compatible Android tablets. Secure Type-C connection keeps gameplay stable and responsive.

How to choose in five steps
- Start with your main device. Windows, Xbox, PS5, Switch, phone and TV support are not interchangeable.
- Choose the connection. Select Bluetooth for convenience, 2.4GHz or wired for latency-sensitive PC play, and direct USB-C for a phone-first setup.
- Pick the layout. Choose asymmetrical Xbox-style sticks for Windows/Xbox familiarity or symmetrical sticks for PlayStation-style and retro preferences.
- Check the physical fit. For mobile controllers, confirm connector, phone size, case clearance, camera clearance and Lightning versus USB-C.
- Verify software and ownership costs. Check firmware tools, remapping, headset support, battery replacement, subscriptions, warranty and return policy before paying for extra features.
Before you keep the controller
Buy from a seller with a clear return policy and test the controller promptly:
- Both sticks at rest and through their full range
- Trigger range and calibration
- D-pad diagonals
- Wireless reconnection after sleep
- Vibration, headset audio and microphone behavior
- Button prompts in your most-played games
- Performance in the exact cloud, remote-play or TV app you use
A controller that pairs but is not detected by one game is often a game-compatibility or input-layer problem rather than a defective unit.
Which one should you buy?
Choose the Xbox Wireless Controller for the simplest Windows-first purchase. Choose the 8BitDo Ultimate 2 Bluetooth when multi-device support, Hall Effect sticks and customization matter more. Choose the 8BitDo Pro 3 for symmetrical sticks and retro play, or the Ultimate 2C for an inexpensive PC pad.
For phone-first gaming, choose the GameSir G8 Plus for larger grips, the Turtle Beach Atom for compact Bluetooth portability, or the Backbone Pro when you specifically need both phone-mounted play and wireless use across other screens. PS5 owners should start with the DualSense. If competitive PC play is the priority, compare a wired or 2.4GHz controller before choosing Bluetooth.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can a Bluetooth controller connect directly to Xbox?
Usually not. Xbox consoles use Xbox Wireless rather than ordinary Bluetooth, so check for official Xbox support, a compatible adapter or wired operation for the exact controller.
Is Bluetooth slower than 2.4GHz?
It can introduce more input delay or variability, although the result depends on implementation and the game. Wired or 2.4GHz is preferable for latency-sensitive competitive play.
Is the Backbone One a Bluetooth controller?
The standard Backbone One is a direct-connect phone controller. It is not Bluetooth merely because the Backbone Pro supports Bluetooth.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteCan one controller work with iPhone, Android, PC and TV?
Sometimes, but verify the exact model, operating systems, connection modes and game support. Pairing with every device does not guarantee rumble, prompts, audio or remapping everywhere.
