It is Microsoft’s controller-first, full-screen gaming interface for compatible Windows 11 PCs. It brings supported games into a console-style home screen while leaving the underlying Windows desktop, PC launchers, hardware limitations, and compatibility requirements intact.
The “any Windows PC” description is therefore too broad: Xbox mode requires Windows 11 version 24H2 or later, a supported market, the Xbox app, and rollout availability on the specific device.

What Xbox mode actually does
Xbox mode—previously called the Xbox Full Screen Experience—is a gaming shell designed to make Windows easier to use from a controller, especially on a television or handheld. It provides a full-screen gaming home screen with recently played games, library access, and entry points to features such as Game Bar and Task View.
It can show Xbox and PC Game Pass games alongside installed games from supported PC storefronts. You can launch the experience, play a game, and return to the normal Windows desktop without treating the PC as dedicated console hardware.

Microsoft began rolling the feature out to Windows 11 PCs in selected markets on April 30, 2026. The rollout is gradual, so an eligible version of Windows does not guarantee that the setting is already visible on every device. Microsoft’s rollout announcement covers the supported form factors and availability details.
Microsoft’s support documentation describes the feature as a full-screen gaming experience for Windows rather than a replacement operating system.
Supported PCs and requirements
Microsoft’s documented requirements and rollout scope include:

- A supported market.
- The Xbox app installed and updated through the Microsoft Store.
- A device that has received the feature through Microsoft’s rollout.
- Desktop PCs, laptops, tablets, and Windows gaming handhelds are included in the announced scope.
Xbox mode itself is a user-interface feature, so a low-powered office laptop may be capable of displaying it. That does not mean it can run a modern game well. Each title still has its own CPU, GPU, memory, storage, driver, and operating-system requirements.

There are three separate questions to ask:
- Can the PC run Xbox mode? This depends on Windows 11 24H2 or later, market availability, the Xbox app, and the rollout.
- Can the PC run a particular game? This depends on the game’s system requirements and the computer’s hardware.
- Can Xbox mode find and launch that game? This depends on supported library integration, the original launcher, account sign-in, and the title’s controller and DRM behavior.
How to enable Xbox mode
Desktop, laptop, or tablet
- Open Start.
- Select Settings.
- Open Gaming.
- Select Xbox mode.
- Turn on Enable Xbox mode.
- Optionally enable Show Xbox mode in Task View.
Earlier preview documentation used the label Full screen experience. If your build uses that wording, look under Settings > Gaming for the equivalent option.
Windows gaming handheld
- Open Start > Settings > Gaming > Xbox mode.
- Under Choose home app, select a supported gaming home app.
- Optionally enable Enter Xbox mode on startup.
On supported handhelds, startup mode can start Windows in the gaming interface after sign-in. Microsoft also says this mode can limit background processes to reduce distractions and improve the gaming-focused environment. That is not a guarantee of higher frame rates.
Enter and exit Xbox mode
The most direct shortcut is Win + F11. You can also use:

- Win + G to open Game Bar, then use its settings to switch modes.
- Win + Tab to open Task View and select Xbox mode or the Windows desktop.
- The Xbox button on a controller to open Game Bar; on supported setups, a long press can provide app-switching controls.
Press Win + F11 again to leave Xbox mode. You do not need to reboot simply to switch between the gaming shell and the desktop, although handheld startup settings may involve a restart when changing the optimized startup configuration.

Which games appear?
Xbox mode can provide access to:
- Games available through the Xbox PC app.
- PC Game Pass games.
- Xbox Play Anywhere titles with supported PC versions.
- Installed games from other popular PC storefronts that the Xbox app can recognize.
The Xbox PC app is also used for browsing Game Pass, launching PC games, social features, cloud gaming, and other Xbox services. See the official Xbox PC app page for Microsoft’s current feature and availability information.
This is an aggregated library, not one unified store. It does not merge ownership, saves, updates, accounts, or launchers. A game from Steam, Epic Games Store, Battle.net, GOG, or another service may still need its original launcher and account authentication. Microsoft’s broad wording about popular storefronts should not be read as a guarantee that every store or every installed title will appear and launch perfectly.
Some games also need a keyboard or mouse for menus, launchers, setup screens, mod tools, or gameplay. Anti-cheat software, DRM, overlays, permissions, and unusual installation locations can all affect launching.
What Xbox mode cannot do
| Claim | Reality |
|---|---|
| It converts a PC into Xbox hardware. | No. The machine remains a Windows PC with its existing CPU, GPU, storage, drivers, and performance limits. |
| It makes games run faster. | Not as a general rule. Handheld startup mode may limit background processes, but performance still depends on hardware, thermals, power mode, drivers, resolution, and the game. |
| It replaces the Windows desktop. | No. Desktop access remains available through Game Bar, Task View, Windows shortcuts, and Xbox mode’s switching controls. |
| It plays every Xbox console game on PC. | No. You need a native PC version, Xbox Play Anywhere support, cloud gaming, Remote Play, or another supported route. Console-only software remains platform-specific. |
| It combines every PC store into one store. | No. It can present supported installed games together, but ownership, installation, updates, accounts, and launchers remain separate. |
| Every listed game works with a controller. | No. The interface is controller-optimized, but individual games and desktop utilities may require keyboard, mouse, or touch input. |
PC Game Pass is also not the same as Xbox console access. Microsoft says its PC catalog and availability vary by region, plan, platform, and time. Games can leave the catalog, and the subscription does not grant a Windows download for every game available on Xbox consoles. See the PC Game Pass page for current terms.

Windows apps behave differently in the shell
Xbox mode is convenient for launching games, but it is not a normal desktop workspace. Microsoft documents several limitations:
- Only one window is displayed at a time.
- Apps appear full screen where possible.
- An app that opens multiple windows may show only its most recent window.
- Apps without full-screen support may appear over a black background.
- Minimize and maximize controls may not behave normally.
- Some ordinary desktop keyboard shortcuts are disabled.
This matters if you expect to keep Discord, a browser, a streaming dashboard, a mod manager, a file manager, or a launcher visible beside your game. For that kind of multitasking, return to the desktop or use a conventional launcher instead.
If Xbox mode is missing
- Check the version in Settings > System > About. Xbox mode requires Windows 11 24H2 or later.
- Go to Settings > Windows Update and select Check for updates.
- Enable Get the latest updates as soon as they’re available, if the option is shown.
- Update the Xbox app through the Microsoft Store.
- Restart the PC.
- Check whether the feature is supported in your market.
- Allow for the possibility that Microsoft’s gradual rollout has not reached the device.
Do not assume that installing the Xbox app alone activates the operating-system-level Xbox mode, particularly on Windows 10. Avoid unofficial registry edits, feature-ID tools, and activation utilities unless you fully understand that they are unsupported and may create update or stability problems.

Common problems after activation
A game is listed but will not launch
The Xbox app may be showing an old library entry, may not recognize the installation, or may be handing the game to another launcher. Check that the game is still installed, the relevant launcher is present, the correct account is signed in, and the title’s anti-cheat or DRM requirements are satisfied. If the game needs a mouse or keyboard, switch to the desktop for setup.

The desktop looks unusual
That can be expected. Single-window display, black backgrounds, altered window controls, and disabled shortcuts are documented Xbox mode behavior. Use Win + F11, Win + Tab, or Game Bar to return to the normal desktop.
Performance has not improved
Xbox mode is primarily a shell and navigation experience. A handheld may reduce background activity when configured to enter Xbox mode at startup, but frame-rate gains are not guaranteed. Adjust the game’s graphics settings, power mode, resolution, drivers, and cooling instead.
Who should use it?
Xbox mode is a strong fit if you:
- Play mainly with a controller.
- Connect a desktop or laptop to a TV.
- Want a couch-friendly way to browse PC games.
- Use a Windows gaming handheld.
- Subscribe to PC Game Pass or own Xbox Play Anywhere games.
- Want a console-like front end without giving up the Windows desktop.
It is a weaker fit if you:
- Play primarily with a keyboard and mouse.
- Frequently manage several windows at once.
- Rely on mod managers, launchers, file tools, or streaming software.
- Expect guaranteed suspend/resume and one unified update system.
- Want Xbox console exclusives that have no PC version.
- Use Windows 10 or hardware that cannot run your target games.
Alternatives
Steam Big Picture Mode
Steam Big Picture Mode is a natural choice when most of your library is on Steam. It offers a mature controller-focused interface, but it is Steam-centric and does not provide Xbox mode’s Windows and Game Pass integration.
Playnite Fullscreen Mode
Playnite is a third-party launcher for organizing games from multiple PC services. It can be more flexible for a mixed library, but requires separate installation and configuration and does not provide Microsoft’s native Game Bar, Task View, or Xbox account integration.
Dedicated Windows handhelds
Hardware such as the ROG Xbox Ally is built around handheld controls and Xbox mode. Microsoft’s U.S. product page lists estimated retail prices of $599.99 for the ROG Xbox Ally and $999.99 for the ROG Xbox Ally X, checked August 18, 2026; prices, taxes, offers, and availability vary by market. Buying one is unnecessary if you already own a capable PC and only want the interface.
Do you need new hardware?
Usually, no. Xbox mode does not require buying a new gaming PC, Xbox console, or handheld when an existing compatible Windows 11 machine receives the feature. A controller is useful for its intended interface, and a USB-C dock may help connect a compatible laptop or handheld to a TV, display, Ethernet, accessories, and charging. Dock compatibility depends on video output, charging wattage, resolution, and the device’s power limits.
PC Game Pass can provide a ready-made library, but it is a recurring subscription. Microsoft’s U.S. page listed PC Game Pass at $13.99 per month when checked August 18, 2026; the price and catalog can change, and recurring billing is enabled by default unless canceled. It is a better fit for players who try many games than for someone who plays only a few owned titles.
