The series has two main identities: demanding, stage-based action-platformers and exploration-led action RPGs. For open-ended exploration, start with Symphony of the Night or Aria of Sorrow; for discrete stages and a tougher action challenge, choose an earlier linear entry. The best pick depends on which style you want, how much challenge you enjoy, and what you can play.
How to choose among the best Castlevania games
This guide ranks by a practical mix of design appeal, how well each style suits its intended audience, and accessibility through current collections—not by claiming a universal consensus. Castlevania’s traditional games send you through discrete stages, emphasizing combat, timing, and platforming. Symphony of the Night helped move the series toward open-ended action-RPG play, where exploration and character progression shape the experience. GameSpot’s editorial ranking discusses that shift.

- Choose stage-based Castlevania if you want a sequence of focused levels and deliberate, demanding action.
- Choose exploration-led Castlevania if you prefer a connected world, backtracking, and character growth.
- Choose by collection when platform access matters: a collection can make an era easier to play, but its games need not all suit your taste equally.
Best Castlevania games by play style
Best for exploration: Symphony of the Night
Symphony of the Night is the clearest starting point if you want the series’ exploration-led side. Its open-ended action-RPG approach differs from the earlier games’ mostly level-based structure. Pick it when uncovering a map and developing a character sounds more appealing than moving through a straightforward series of stages.
Best portable-era exploration pick: Aria of Sorrow
Aria of Sorrow is another strong choice for players drawn to exploration and progression. It is part of the GBA-era games available in the Castlevania Advance Collection. That collection provides a current route to the game alongside three other titles; the convenience of the collection is an access benefit, not a claim that every included game is equally suited to every player.

Best for classic, stage-based action: earlier linear entries
If you want discrete stages, deliberate platforming, and a demanding action game, begin with an earlier linear Castlevania rather than assuming the series is all exploration RPGs. The Castlevania Anniversary Collection is a modern access route for this side of the series. Check its exact game lineup and availability on your platform before buying, since the collection’s contents and regional catalog matter to the choice.
Which Castlevania collection should you get first?
Start with the collection whose era and play style match your preference. Konami describes the Advance Collection as containing four games and adding rewind, save/load, and replay features. The Dominus Collection brings back three 2D titles and includes Haunted Castle Revisited, a reimagined version of the arcade game. These features and lineups make the collections useful access routes; they do not settle which individual games are best.

If you want portable-era games
Choose Advance if the GBA-era selection is the draw. Its stated rewind, save/load, and replay features can also make revisiting these games more convenient than relying on their original hardware-era experience.

- Three incredible action adventure games from the Castlevania series have finally returned, for the first time!
- Dawn of Sorrow, Portrait of Ruin, Order of Ecclesia
If you want the classic stage-based line
Look at Anniversary and confirm the games listed for the specific platform and region where you intend to play. A collection recommendation is only useful if its actual lineup matches the games you want.
What to check before buying
- Platform: Confirm the collection is available on your system and that the store listing is for the correct edition.
- Contents: Compare the listed games with the era you want; collection names alone do not tell you whether a particular title is included.
- Regional availability: Store catalogs and availability can vary by region and change over time.
- Difficulty: If you prefer room to learn, look for the collection features stated by Konami, such as rewind and save/load in Advance, rather than assuming every classic entry has the same challenge or conveniences.
Promotions are time-sensitive. Konami’s September 25, 2026, 40th-anniversary announcement said the original game was temporarily free on the App Store and Google Play until October 24, 2026, and that sales were running across multiple platforms at announcement time. Those were dated offers, not ongoing availability or price guarantees. Check Konami’s announcement and your platform’s store for current terms.

How rankings differ
Castlevania rankings reflect what their authors value and which games they cover. Nintendo Life’s ranking is limited to Nintendo platforms and uses reader ratings, so it is one perspective rather than a universal verdict. A list that prioritizes influence, one that favors how a game plays today, and one that focuses on what is easiest to access can reasonably order the series differently.
