Fortnite is the easiest all-purpose recommendation. You can play Battle Royale, Zero Build, solo, duo or squad matches, and explore Creative and user-created experiences from the same ecosystem.

It requires an Epic account, an internet connection and the Epic Games Launcher. The base game is free, while skins, battle passes and event content are optional purchases. “Free Fortnite” does not mean every associated item or experience is free. Performance varies significantly between modes, but Performance Mode and reduced settings can make it a practical option for some older PCs. That is not a guarantee for every laptop or integrated GPU.
VALORANT — best tactical shooter
VALORANT combines precise, round-based shooting with character abilities. It is a strong choice if you want deliberate team tactics rather than battle royale matches.
The current listing specifies 64-bit Windows 10 version 2004/build 19041 or newer, or Windows 11. You also need a Riot account and Riot’s anti-cheat software. Verify current security and anti-cheat requirements before installation. The game is free-to-play; its paid economy is primarily cosmetic, including weapon skins, but the store is a prominent part of the experience. Expect a demanding learning curve and online-only play.

Counter-Strike 2 — best traditional competitive FPS
Counter-Strike 2 is built around positioning, recoil control, economy management, communication and round-by-round decision-making. It is the best fit here for players who want a traditional competitive shooter rather than hero abilities or battle royale systems.
The core game is free through Steam, but matchmaking conditions, account status and item-market systems should be checked on the current Steam listing. It is more demanding than Counter-Strike: Global Offensive, so an older Windows 10 PC may struggle even if it launches. Cheating, smurfing and player toxicity are practical concerns, and the game is much less forgiving to beginners than its free price suggests.
League of Legends — best long-term competitive game
League of Legends is a five-versus-five strategy game with a huge champion roster and years of depth. It is one of the better choices for a modest laptop that cannot comfortably run modern shooters.
The game is free to start, with champions available through play or purchases and cosmetics sold separately. Its knowledge curve is extremely steep: learning the map, roles, items, objectives and matchups takes time. New players should not assume ranked play is the default destination. Matches are online-only, and player behavior can have as much effect on enjoyment as the mechanics.

Dota 2 offers exceptional strategic depth through its heroes, items, map decisions and flexible team compositions. It suits players who enjoy complexity and experimentation more than casual, immediately readable matches.
Its free entry point is generous, but onboarding is difficult and matches can be long. Dota 2 is not simply a harder version of League of Legends: the controls, pacing, economies and decision-making differ substantially. Choose it if you are willing to learn a dense system rather than looking for a quick first game.

Warframe — best free co-op action RPG
Warframe is the strongest recommendation for solo or co-op players who want fast third-person combat, loot, movement and years of progression. It has extensive story and mission content and works better as a persistent game world than most competitive free titles.
The trade-off is complexity. Early systems are poorly explained, the amount of content can be overwhelming and progression can feel grind-heavy. Premium currency and trading affect convenience, so it is more accurate to call Warframe highly playable for free than completely free of friction. You need an online connection and publisher or platform account.
Path of Exile — best deep free action RPG
Path of Exile is aimed at players who want Diablo-like combat with unusually deep builds, loot systems and endgame progression. It can provide substantial playtime before its free-to-play model becomes a major concern, but its passive skill tree and systems are intimidating.
Many newcomers use build guides because the game does not explain every important interaction clearly. Stash tabs become particularly useful for serious long-term play. Make sure you are downloading the intended Path of Exile product rather than confusing it with Path of Exile 2; the two games and their requirements are not interchangeable.
Apex Legends — best character-based battle royale
Apex Legends adds character abilities, squad roles and fast movement to the battle royale format. It is the best choice here if you want a high-speed squad game with more mechanical movement than Fortnite.
EA lists Apex Legends as free-to-play and its PC requirements specify 64-bit Windows 10. A relatively capable PC is still advisable for consistent performance, particularly in busy fights. Seasonal balance, matchmaking and server quality can change. Cosmetics and seasonal purchases are optional, but the game requires an online EA or platform account.

The Finals — best destruction-focused shooter
The Finals gives team shooting a clear identity through destructible environments and fast objective play. It is a worthwhile alternative if established competitive shooters do not appeal to you.
Microsoft’s current top-free PC listings include The Finals. It is more demanding than its free price suggests, and team coordination matters. Player populations and matchmaking can vary by region and time, so check the publisher’s current Windows 10 requirements before downloading.
Genshin Impact — best exploration-focused RPG
Genshin Impact is the best free option for solo exploration, quests and anime-style action RPG combat. It offers a substantially different experience from shooters and MOBAs, and the base PC game is listed as free on the Epic Games Store.

The gacha system is central, not incidental: characters and weapons can be acquired through randomised systems. You can play substantial content without spending, but collecting specific characters or pursuing particular builds can encourage significant spending. The game also has a large download and more demanding visuals, making it a poor fit for some older laptops. It is primarily a solo experience with online account requirements.
Rocket League — best accessible competitive game
Rocket League turns football into short matches played with rocket-powered cars. The premise is immediately understandable, but the skill ceiling is enormous. It works for solo queue, team play, private matches and groups of friends.
The Epic Games Store lists it as a free base game. Online connection and an account are required for the main experience. Cosmetics and seasonal progression are optional, while ranked play can become frustrating as players improve.
Roblox — best platform for variety
Roblox is a platform containing thousands of user-created experiences rather than one conventional game. It is useful when different people want different things: role-playing, obstacle courses, simulators, horror, racing and many other formats are available.
Microsoft lists Roblox for Windows as free with in-app purchases. Quality, safety and monetization vary by individual experience. Parents should enable appropriate privacy and purchase controls, restrict voice and chat features where necessary, and avoid assuming that every Roblox experience is equally suitable for children.

The Sims 4 — best free life simulator
The Sims 4 is a strong solo recommendation for building homes, creating characters and managing virtual lives. Its base game is free, and it is listed among the Epic Games Store’s free titles.
The limitation is the enormous paid DLC catalog. Expansion packs, game packs, stuff packs and kits add much of the game’s optional content. The free base game is legitimate value, but it should not be confused with access to the complete catalog.
Fall Guys — best casual party game
Fall Guys uses simple controls, short rounds and obstacle-course competition to make online play approachable for non-gamers and mixed-skill groups. It is a good choice when you want low-pressure entertainment rather than a story or solo campaign.
The base game is listed as free on the Epic Games Store. It requires an account and internet connection, and its cosmetics and seasonal content change over time. It is primarily a group or online game, not a solo-player recommendation.

Destiny 2 — best sci-fi shooter, with a major qualification
Destiny 2 has excellent gunplay and a mix of solo, co-op, raids and competitive activities. It is a good starting point for readers who want a science-fiction shooter with long-term multiplayer progression.
However, the free version is only a portion of Destiny 2. Campaigns, expansions, seasonal content and endgame access are divided across paid products, and that structure changes frequently. The Epic Games Store lists the base game as free, but do not treat it as a complete free MMO or a fully free story campaign.

Start with League of Legends, VALORANT, Rocket League, Roblox, Team Fortress 2 or Dota 2. Fortnite may also work well in Performance Mode. Counter-Strike 2 can be viable on some older systems, but it is considerably more demanding than CS:GO.
These are cautious suitability labels, not performance guarantees. Minimum requirements generally mean “can launch,” not “will maintain stable frame rates.” Integrated graphics, laptop battery mode, crowded scenes and competitive matches can expose limitations quickly. Apex Legends, The Finals, Genshin Impact, Warframe, Destiny 2 and newer live-service RPGs generally demand more.
What “free” really means
- Free-to-play: the core game costs nothing, but cosmetics, passes, characters or convenience items may be sold.
- Free base game: the starting product is free, while expansions or DLC are paid. Destiny 2 and The Sims 4 fit this model.
- Gacha: randomised purchases are used for characters or equipment, as in Genshin Impact.
- Grind and convenience: Warframe and Path of Exile are highly playable for free, but time-saving or storage features can become valuable.
- Temporary giveaway: a normally paid game claimed during a promotion is not the same as a permanently free-to-play game.
- Demo, trial or browser game: these can be worthwhile, but they should not be presented as a complete installed free game.
Most games in this guide are online-only or primarily online. Expect a persistent connection, account creation, a launcher, updates and sometimes anti-cheat software. Offline play should not be assumed.
How to download safely on Windows 10
- Use the publisher’s official website or a major storefront such as Steam, the Epic Games Store, the Microsoft Store or the official EA app.
- Confirm that the listing says Free, Free-to-play or Base Game Free, rather than demo or trial.
- Check the current operating-system, architecture and hardware requirements. For example, VALORANT specifies a particular Windows 10 build, while Apex specifies 64-bit Windows 10.
- Create or sign into the required publisher account, install the launcher and let the game update fully.
- Begin with the automatic graphics preset. If performance is poor, lower resolution scale, shadows, effects, view distance and texture quality; disable ray tracing where available.
- Use an FPS counter and judge sustained performance rather than one brief scene.
Never use cracked launchers, torrent releases, unofficial “optimizers,” DLL packs or fake download pages. With Windows 10 no longer receiving normal security fixes, official sources and current security software matter even more. Microsoft recommends moving to Windows 11 where the PC is eligible.
If a game will not launch or runs badly
- Restart the PC and update the graphics driver from NVIDIA, AMD or Intel.
- Verify or repair game files in the launcher.
- Install available Windows updates and confirm that anti-cheat installed correctly.
- Temporarily disable Discord, Xbox Game Bar, GPU-recording and monitoring overlays.
- Check the publisher’s support page for outages or known compatibility problems.
- Only then consider reinstalling an anti-cheat component or the entire game, following the publisher’s documented procedure.
For stuttering, close browsers and background launchers, check temperatures for throttling and consider an SSD for faster loading and asset streaming. An SSD can improve loading behavior, but it is not a guaranteed frame-rate upgrade.
Should you still play games on Windows 10?
Yes, a Windows 10 PC can continue to function and may meet a game’s listed requirements. But Windows 10 is no longer a fully supported long-term gaming baseline. Microsoft ended support on October 14, 2025, and future game, launcher or anti-cheat updates may stop supporting it independently of whether older versions still launch.
Check compatibility title by title, keep backups and upgrade to Windows 11 if your hardware qualifies. Do not buy a dubious security utility or “game booster” to compensate for an unsupported operating system.
