Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Yes—but not through Sony’s current Remote Play app. The modern PlayStation Remote Play software supports PS5 and PS4, not PS3. To display a physical PS3 on a Windows PC or Mac, the most practical method is an analog component capture setup. If you want to play PS3 software directly on a computer instead, RPCS3 is the main alternative—but that is emulation, not streaming your console.
The four ways to get PS3 gameplay onto a PC
| Method | Uses your physical PS3? | Best for | Main limitation |
|---|---|---|---|
| Current Sony Remote Play | No PS3 support | PS4 and PS5 owners | It will not detect a PS3 |
| Analog component capture | Yes | Viewing, recording, or broadcasting a physical PS3 | Requires compatible hardware and may add preview latency |
| RPCS3 | No | Playing PS3 software natively on a PC | Compatibility and performance vary by game |
| Legacy Sony VAIO Remote Play | Yes, in historical configurations | Older supported VAIO systems | Obsolete, limited, and unreliable on modern computers |
These methods are often incorrectly described as the same thing. Remote Play sends video from the console over a network and returns controller input. A capture card transports the PS3’s video and audio output to the computer, but normally sends no controls back. RPCS3 runs the game on the computer itself.

Does the official PS Remote Play app support PS3?
No. Sony’s current PC and Mac Remote Play documentation covers PS5 and PS4 only. The official Remote Play overview also lists PS5 and PS4 as the supported consoles for streaming to computers and other compatible devices. Installing the current app will not make a PS3 appear or provide a supported PS3 connection.
See Sony’s current Remote Play instructions for PC and Mac and its Remote Play overview.

Did the PS3 ever have Remote Play?
Yes, but it was an older and narrower feature. Sony’s PS3 documentation centered Remote Play on devices such as the PSP and PS Vita, with registration performed on the console. It was not the unrestricted PC streaming experience many people associate with the current PS4 and PS5 application.
On a compatible legacy setup, the console’s menu included paths such as Settings → Remote Play Settings → Register Device. Sony also documented network settings under Settings → Network → Remote Play. Internet Remote Play could involve UPnP or router configuration, including TCP port 9293, but those instructions belong to the old supported-client ecosystem—not to a modern official PS3-to-PC application.
There were further restrictions: Sony states that only some PS3 games support Remote Play, and certain media—including Blu-ray and DVD playback—cannot be used through the feature. Consult the PS3 Remote Play manual, local Remote Play documentation, and internet Remote Play documentation for the historical requirements.

Method 1: Display a physical PS3 with a capture card
For most people who specifically want to use their real PS3, analog component capture is the most supportable route:
PS3 component output → compatible capture hardware → USB or PCIe → PC → OBS or similar software
The PS3 continues to render the game. The computer displays, records, or broadcasts the resulting picture. Your controller normally remains paired with the PS3.

- New slimmer, lighter PS3 system, Wireless controller
- 320GB HDD for storing games, music, videos, and photos
- Streams thousands of movies and TV shows instantly from Netflix
- Built-in Blu-ray player with 3D capabilities. HDMI output for 1080p resolution.
What you need
- A working PS3 and controller
- A PS3 component video cable or another analog output path
- A capture device that explicitly accepts the PS3’s analog signal
- A Windows or macOS computer compatible with the capture device
- OBS or the manufacturer’s capture application
- An optional television or monitor for low-latency passthrough
Why component video matters
Modern HDMI capture cards generally cannot directly capture the PS3’s HDMI output because it is protected by HDCP. Elgato says its modern capture cards accept unencrypted HDMI and specifically identifies PS3 HDMI capture as unsupported. That includes the otherwise capable HD60 X and similar modern devices.
The original Elgato Game Capture HD was historically designed to capture a PS3 through an analog Component/D-Terminal connection. It is discontinued, however, and used-market units may be missing cables, have driver issues, or be difficult to configure on current operating systems. Other component-capable capture devices may work, but compatibility must be verified from the manufacturer’s documentation.
Do not assume that a capture card advertised for 1080p60 consoles will accept a PS3. The important question is whether it accepts the PS3’s actual signal path.
Capture setup
- Connect the component cable. Plug the red, green, and blue video connectors into the capture hardware. Connect the red and white audio leads as required. Do not treat the yellow composite plug as interchangeable with a green component input.
- Connect the capture device to the computer. Use the manufacturer-recommended USB port, or install the PCIe card according to its documentation. Obtain drivers only from the manufacturer’s official support site.
- Change the PS3’s output mode. Use the PS3 display-settings wizard or video-output settings and select Component/D-Terminal rather than HDMI. Choose a resolution supported by the capture device. If the screen goes blank, power-cycle the console and rerun the display setup.
- Add the device to OBS. Create a scene, add a Video Capture Device source, select the capture hardware, and begin with the resolution and frame rate the device reports. Forcing unsupported values can produce a black screen or unstable video.
- Configure audio. Select the capture device’s audio input if audio travels through it. Confirm that the audio meter moves in OBS. Disable duplicate desktop or monitoring sources if you hear an echo.
- Keep the controller connected to the PS3. A normal capture card carries video and audio, not controller commands. Pair the controller with the console for the simplest and most reliable input path.
- Test latency and picture quality. Check the image, sound, aspect ratio, and input response before starting a long session or broadcast.
Managing capture latency
A PC preview can add delay through capture buffering, USB transfer, software processing, display scaling, and audio monitoring. For slower games, this may be acceptable. Rhythm games, fighting games, and other timing-sensitive titles are better played through a capture device’s passthrough output or on a television connected directly to the PS3. Use the PC preview for recording or broadcasting while using the passthrough display for play.
Capture troubleshooting
Black screen over HDMI
The likely cause is HDCP. Changing OBS resolution settings will not remove the PS3’s HDMI protection. Switch to a component-output setup and use hardware documented for analog PS3 capture. See Elgato’s PS3 compatibility explanation.

- Built-in Wi-Fi for connectivity anywhere and multiple media format compatibility.
- Free membership and access to all the events, as well as game, movie, TV and other media content available on the PlayStation Network (PSN).
No picture over component
- Confirm that the PS3 is still not configured for HDMI output.
- Check the red, green, and blue connector order.
- Try a lower resolution supported by the capture device.
- Verify that the device expects the audio leads in the arrangement you are using.
- Power-cycle both the PS3 and capture device after changing output types.
Picture but no audio
Check the red and white audio connections, then watch the capture device’s audio meter in OBS. Some devices expose audio as a separate input. Also check that you are not monitoring a silent desktop source instead of the capture source.
Excessive delay
Use direct USB rather than a hub where possible, reduce unnecessary preview processing, and use passthrough to a television or monitor. Avoid adding network streaming on top of a delayed capture preview unless you need it.
Wrong colors or aspect ratio
Confirm that the signal is being interpreted as component rather than composite, match the PS3 output mode to the capture device, and keep OBS’s canvas and output aspect ratios consistent. Establish a clean base signal before applying scaling or color adjustments.
Method 2: Play PS3 games with RPCS3
RPCS3 is an open-source PS3 emulator for Windows, Linux, macOS, FreeBSD, and Android. It does not stream your physical console. The PC emulates the PS3 and runs legally obtained firmware and game data locally.
RPCS3 states that users must obtain PS3 firmware legally and use legitimate game copies. Compatibility is title-specific, so check the project’s compatibility information for the game you want before investing time in configuration.

- High-Definition Blu-ray player for the best movie experience. Plays DVDs and CDs
- 500GB HDD for storing games, music, videos, and photos
- Internet ready with built-in Wi-Fi
- Blu-ray player
Basic RPCS3 setup
- Download RPCS3 from the official project site.
- Obtain official PS3 firmware lawfully.
- In RPCS3, select File → Install Firmware.
- Add legally dumped or otherwise legally obtained game data.
- Check the specific title’s compatibility status.
- Configure a compatible controller.
- Test at the game’s default resolution before enabling enhancements.
RPCS3’s published hardware guidance lists, broadly, an x64 processor, 8 GB of RAM, and a Vulkan 1.2-capable GPU as minimum signals. Its recommended example is a Ryzen 5 5600 or Intel i5-10400, 16 GB of RAM, and an RTX 2060. Its higher-resolution guidance calls for substantially stronger hardware, with a Ryzen 7 9800X3D and RTX 4070 given as an example. These are project guidance, not guarantees: performance varies by title, emulator build, renderer, resolution, shader compilation, and configuration.
Advantages and disadvantages
- Advantages: no capture card, PC-native rendering, flexible recording, higher-resolution options, and the ability to use PC streaming tools.
- Disadvantages: title-specific compatibility, demanding hardware, legally required firmware and game data, possible patches or custom settings, and imperfect support for console-specific peripherals or behavior.
Can Steam Remote Play stream RPCS3?
Potentially. Steam Remote Play sends video and audio from a host PC to another supported device and returns input to that host. You can consider adding RPCS3 as a non-Steam application, but this remains PC-to-device streaming, not PS3 Remote Play. Steam may require controller mapping and may not reliably recognize or launch every RPCS3 title.
See Steam Remote Play’s official description for the general host-and-client model.

Common questions and misconceptions
Can I plug the PS3 HDMI cable into my laptop?
Usually not. Laptop HDMI ports are normally output-only. A computer needs a capture device to accept external video, and PS3 HDMI HDCP can still prevent capture.
Can a USB cable from the PS3 carry its video to the PC?
No. A standard USB connection for controllers or storage does not turn the computer into a PS3 display.
Recommended Free Tools
Will every PS3 game work with Remote Play?
No. Sony’s PS3 manual says that only some games support the original Remote Play feature.
Does a capture card control the PS3?
Normally no. It carries video and audio. Keep the controller paired to the PS3 unless you are using a separate, specially configured input-routing system.
Is RPCS3 the same as streaming?
No. RPCS3 emulates PS3 software on the PC. You can subsequently stream that PC session, but the physical console is not involved.
