The Lenovo Legion 5 Gen 10 offers the best value-oriented combination of gaming performance, OLED display quality, and upgradeability.
There is no single objectively best gaming laptop. The right choice depends on the games you play, the resolution and refresh rate you want, how often you carry the machine, and whether you need an entry-level system or a desktop-class replacement. These recommendations are based on testing and buying guides from Tom’s Hardware, GamesRadar+, RTINGS, Tom’s Guide, and PC Gamer, cross-checked against manufacturer specifications—not personal testing by this publication.
Buying note: Laptop families often include several materially different configurations. Before purchasing, match the exact processor, GPU, GPU power limit, display, RAM, storage, and included charger. A review of an RTX 5090 model does not automatically apply to an RTX 5060 version carrying the same product name.

For readers ready to compare gaming laptops, the table is a starting point—not a substitute for checking the individual listing. The model-specific details below explain which configurations make each recommendation worthwhile.
1. Razer Blade 18 (2026): best premium desktop replacement
Tom’s Hardware names the Razer Blade 18 (2026) its best gaming laptop overall. Its appeal is straightforward: it prioritizes performance, screen flexibility, and build quality over price and portability.
At the top of the product family, Razer lists an Intel Core Ultra 9 290HX Plus processor and an RTX 5090 Laptop GPU with 24GB of VRAM and a stated 175W total graphics power. The 18-inch dual-mode display can operate at UHD+ resolution at 240Hz or switch to FHD+ at 440Hz. The same family specification includes vapor-chamber cooling, Thunderbolt 5, Wi-Fi 7, 2.5Gb Ethernet, and a 5MP camera.

Alongside the suite of features from NVIDIA G-SYNC and NVIDIA Advanced Optimus, you're guaranteed that whatever's on-screen is a distinct viewing delight.
Those are maximum or family-level specifications, not a guarantee that every Blade 18 listing includes them. A lower-tier Blade 18 may use a different GPU, screen, memory configuration, or power adapter. Confirm the precise SKU before treating the machine as an RTX 5090 desktop replacement.

- Players who want the highest-end mobile gaming performance available in a conventional laptop.
- Users who value a large screen and want to choose between high-resolution single-player gaming and very high-refresh competitive play.
- Buyers who regularly connect to wired networking, fast peripherals, or multiple displays.
Who should skip it
Skip the Blade 18 if you carry your laptop frequently, need strong unplugged endurance, or have a firm budget. High-power gaming laptops are most capable when connected to their supplied adapter, and large desktop-replacement systems are a poor match for frequent travel. Tom’s Hardware also identifies the lack of PCIe 5.0 SSDs as a drawback.
2. HP OMEN MAX 16 (2025): best all-rounder
The HP OMEN MAX 16 is the most balanced recommendation in this group. GamesRadar+ calls it its best all-rounder tested, and RTINGS places it at the top of its gaming-laptop recommendations after testing more than 165 laptops.
HP offers the OMEN MAX 16 with processors including the Core Ultra 9 275HX and Core Ultra 7 255HX, and discrete graphics ranging from the RTX 5060 through the RTX 5090. It has two accessible SODIMM memory slots and supports up to 64GB of DDR5 memory. One particularly attractive screen option is a 16-inch 2560×1600 OLED panel with a 48–240Hz variable refresh range and 100% DCI-P3 coverage.
This flexibility is also the laptop’s biggest buying hazard. An RTX 5060 OMEN MAX 16, an RTX 5070 Ti model, and an RTX 5090 model may look similar in photographs while offering very different gaming performance, thermals, battery demands, and prices. The review configuration matters more than the family name.
Best configuration priorities
- Choose the GPU first. Match the graphics tier to your target resolution and games rather than paying for an oversized CPU while accepting a weaker GPU.
- Prefer at least 16GB of RAM. The two SODIMM slots make a future memory upgrade more practical than on many thin premium laptops.
- Consider the OLED panel if image quality matters. Its contrast and color coverage are major advantages for single-player games and general media use.
- Check country-specific availability. HP states that processor, graphics, display, memory, and other options vary by region and configuration.
The OMEN MAX 16 is the best fit for someone who wants a powerful 16-inch machine without committing to the largest possible chassis. It is also the pick most likely to make sense across several budgets, provided the buyer verifies which version is actually for sale.
3. Razer Blade 16 (2026): best premium portable choice
The 2026 Razer Blade 16 targets buyers who want a comparatively slim, premium design without giving up flagship graphics options. Tom’s Guide praises its OLED display, aluminum chassis, and gaming performance, but also points to high pricing and heat and noise during demanding workloads.
Tom’s Guide’s review unit used an Intel Core Ultra 9 358H, RTX 5090 Laptop GPU, 32GB of RAM, and a 2TB SSD. That tested configuration was listed at $4,899, while the same guide listed a $2,399 starting price for a model with an RTX 5060 and 16GB of RAM. Those figures describe different configurations and should not be treated as the price or performance of the entire product line.
The distinction is especially important here. An entry Blade 16 with an RTX 5060 is not a cheaper version of the reviewed RTX 5090 system in any meaningful performance sense; it is a different class of gaming machine in the same chassis family. Check the GPU, memory, storage, screen, and power specification together.
Why choose it over the Blade 18?
Choose the Blade 16 when desk space and portability matter more than the largest screen and maximum sustained power. Choose the Blade 18 when you want the strongest desktop-replacement experience and are prepared for a larger, heavier setup. Neither is a sensible choice solely because it carries an RTX 5090 badge; the cooling system, power limit, screen, and price all matter.
4. Lenovo Legion 5 Gen 10: best value-oriented option
The Lenovo Legion 5 Gen 10 is the value pick from GamesRadar+. It combines the features that are often cut from cheaper gaming laptops—an excellent display, a MUX switch, current wireless connectivity, and accessible memory—with a more restrained price and performance target than the flagship Razer systems.

- Gigabit LAN, 2x2 WiFi 7 (802.11be), Bluetooth 5.4
- 4.19 lbs. (1.90 kg),Windows 11 Home
U.S. Lenovo product pages show configurations with an RTX 5060 Laptop GPU, 16GB or 32GB of DDR5 memory, and a 1TB SSD. A particularly strong panel option is the 15.1-inch 2560×1600 OLED display with a 165Hz refresh rate, HDR 600 True Black, and 100% DCI-P3 coverage. The specifications also list an 80Wh battery, two SODIMM slots, Wi-Fi 7, HDMI 2.1, and USB-C connectivity.
Some Legion 5 Gen 10 variants use RTX 5050, RTX 5060, or RTX 5070 graphics. That means a retailer’s headline may be accurate for the family but misleading for the specific unit being sold. Verify whether the listing has the OLED or IPS display, 16GB or 32GB of RAM, which processor family is installed, and which GPU is included.

Why it is a strong value
The Legion 5 Gen 10 does not need to be the cheapest laptop to be a good value. A better display, 1TB of storage, a MUX switch, and upgradeable memory can make the complete ownership experience better than a superficially cheaper model with 8GB of RAM, a small SSD, or a dimmer panel. If the price difference is reasonable, the 32GB configuration is the more comfortable choice for demanding modern games and multitasking.
5. Acer Nitro V 16S AI and Nitro V 16 AI: best budget direction
Tom’s Hardware names the Acer Nitro V 16S AI its best budget gaming laptop overall. Tom’s Guide separately describes the Acer Nitro V 16 AI as a reasonable low-cost route to RTX 5050 performance, praising its battery life and upgradeability while criticizing the color quality of its 16-inch 1920×1200 IPS display.
These laptops make sense for students, first-time buyers, and players who mainly want dependable 1080p- or 1200p-class gaming without paying for a premium chassis or high-end ray-tracing performance. The trade-offs are typical of this segment: displays may have weaker color, the chassis may use more conventional materials, and memory, storage, and GPU power limits may be less generous.
What to check before buying a Nitro
- Whether the listing says Nitro V 16S AI or Nitro V 16 AI.
- Whether the GPU is an RTX 5050 or RTX 5060.
- Whether the laptop includes 16GB of RAM or an inferior 8GB configuration.
- Whether storage is at least 512GB, with 1TB preferable for a new gaming purchase.
- Whether the display is the 1920×1200 IPS panel or a different option.
The Nitro line is a good reminder that budget gaming laptops should be judged by the complete specification, not by the presence of an RTX label alone. An RTX 5050 or RTX 5060 system can be a sensible purchase, but its real-world experience depends on cooling, memory, screen quality, and power settings.
6. MSI Katana 15 HX B14W: an alternative budget pick
GamesRadar+ lists the MSI Katana 15 HX B14W as another budget option. Depending on the sale and configuration, it can approach the $1,000 class while offering an RTX 50-series GPU and a QHD display.
That combination makes the Katana worth checking when it is discounted, but the near-$1,000 figure is not a permanent specification. Confirm the exact GPU, processor, display resolution and refresh rate, RAM, and SSD capacity on the specific listing. The Katana is best viewed as a deal-dependent alternative rather than a universal budget winner.
What the testing says—and why the winners differ
The major buying guides do not agree on one uncontested champion. Tom’s Hardware favors the Razer Blade 18 (2026) overall. GamesRadar+ favors the HP OMEN MAX 16 as its best all-rounder, and RTINGS also ranks the OMEN MAX 16 highly. PC Gamer’s July 15 guide continued to recommend the 2025 Razer Blade 16 overall while waiting for more evaluation of the 2026 model.
That is not necessarily a contradiction. Reviewers may assign different weight to peak performance, portability, display quality, price, fan noise, battery behavior, and the exact configuration tested. Tom’s Hardware says its gaming-laptop testing includes titles such as Cyberpunk 2077 and Red Dead Redemption 2, but benchmark results from one configuration should not be generalized to every laptop carrying the same family name.
Recommended Free Tools
The practical conclusion is to use category winners: the Blade 18 for maximum performance, the OMEN MAX 16 for balance, the Blade 16 for a premium slimmer design, and the Legion 5 for value. That approach is more useful than pretending that a desktop replacement, a portable premium laptop, and a budget system serve the same buyer.
How to choose the right gaming laptop
1. Start with the games and target resolution
Competitive games can benefit from a high-refresh display and a system capable of sustaining high frame rates. Visually demanding single-player games generally place more emphasis on GPU performance, adequate VRAM, cooling, and image quality. Decide whether your priority is high-refresh 1080p or 1200p play, 1600p gaming, or a larger high-resolution experience before comparing models.

Do not pay for a 240Hz or 440Hz panel simply because the number is larger. A very high refresh rate is most useful when the games you play and the selected GPU can produce enough frames to take advantage of it.
2. Compare GPU tier and power limit
The RTX 5050, RTX 5060, RTX 5070, RTX 5070 Ti, RTX 5080, and RTX 5090 Laptop GPUs occupy meaningfully different performance tiers. Even two laptops with the same named GPU can perform differently because of their cooling design and power limit.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesLook for the laptop GPU’s stated wattage or total graphics power, not just the GPU name. Also check whether the listing includes the correct high-wattage adapter. A thin system may intentionally run a GPU at a lower power limit than a larger desktop replacement. That can be a worthwhile portability trade-off, but it should be visible in the buying decision.
3. Do not accept 8GB of RAM or a 256GB SSD
Tom’s Hardware specifically cautions against buying a new gaming laptop with only 8GB of RAM or 256GB of storage. Modern games, Windows, launchers, updates, and background applications can make those capacities uncomfortable quickly.
Use 16GB of RAM as the practical floor, with 32GB preferable for demanding games, content creation, or heavy multitasking. Aim for at least a 1TB SSD; 2TB is more comfortable if you keep several large games installed. If the laptop has accessible SODIMM slots, a lower initial memory configuration may be upgradeable—but confirm that before buying.
4. Treat the display as a core component
OLED panels generally offer stronger contrast and color than ordinary IPS displays, making them attractive for cinematic games and media. High-refresh IPS panels can cost less and may be a sensible choice for competitive gaming or buyers who prefer to avoid paying for OLED.
Check all of the following rather than stopping at the resolution:
- Panel type: OLED or IPS.
- Resolution and aspect ratio.
- Native refresh rate and whether variable refresh is supported.
- Color coverage, such as DCI-P3.
- HDR rating or implementation.
- Brightness, if the manufacturer or review provides it.
The HP OMEN MAX 16 and Lenovo Legion 5 Gen 10 demonstrate why screen options matter: both families can be sold with materially different panels under the same broad model name.
5. Plan around plugged-in performance
Few gaming notebooks provide eight hours or more of battery life in demanding use, and peak gaming performance generally requires the supplied power adapter. Battery-life figures from light productivity tests should not be confused with unplugged gaming endurance.
If you need a laptop for classes or travel, compare battery capacity, charging behavior, weight, and the availability of a suitable USB-C charging mode—but expect demanding games to reduce battery life sharply. If most gaming happens at a desk, prioritize sustained cooling, screen quality, and GPU power instead.
6. Check upgradeability
Accessible SODIMM slots and spare M.2 storage slots can extend a laptop’s useful life and reduce the cost of fixing an underspecified configuration. HP explicitly lists two accessible memory slots on the OMEN MAX 16, and Lenovo lists two SODIMM slots on Legion 5 Gen 10 variants.

Do not assume that every version of a family has the same internal layout. Check the manufacturer’s service documentation or an authoritative review of the exact model. An external drive can expand your library, but it is not the same as adding an internal M.2 SSD for every use case.
7. Check ports, networking, and the adapter
Desktop-replacement buyers may care about Ethernet, multiple display outputs, and Thunderbolt or USB-C bandwidth. The Blade 18 family, for example, lists Thunderbolt 5, Wi-Fi 7, and 2.5Gb Ethernet among its maximum specifications, while the Legion 5 Gen 10 specifications include Wi-Fi 7, HDMI 2.1, and USB-C. Verify the actual port selection on the SKU you are considering.

Before clicking Buy, copy the retailer’s specification into this checklist:
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- Processor: exact Intel Core or AMD model, not just the family name.
- GPU: RTX 5050, 5060, 5070, 5070 Ti, 5080, or 5090 Laptop GPU.
- GPU power: stated wattage or TGP, if available.
- Memory: 16GB minimum for a new purchase; confirm whether it is upgradeable.
- Storage: 1TB preferred; avoid 256GB unless there is a specific upgrade plan.
- Display: OLED or IPS, resolution, refresh rate, color coverage, and HDR support.
- Battery: capacity and charger included in the box.
- Operating system: confirm the included Windows edition or whether the laptop ships without Windows.
- Model number: save the complete part number so you can compare like with like.
- Availability: verify region, retailer, warranty, return policy, and delivery date.
A product page can use the correct family name while silently offering less RAM, a smaller SSD, a lower-tier GPU, or a different screen. If any of the key fields are missing, treat that as a reason to investigate—not as permission to assume the best specification.
Useful additions after purchase
Cooling pad or stand
A gaming laptop cooling pad or a simple laptop stand can improve desk ergonomics and help keep air intakes unobstructed. It is not a guaranteed FPS upgrade, and it cannot turn a lower-power laptop GPU into a higher-power one. Use it to address airflow and positioning, not as a replacement for a proper cooling design.
External storage
If your laptop has limited internal capacity, an external SSD for gaming can provide useful extra space for a game library and media files. Check the laptop’s USB-C or USB-A speed and the drive’s compatibility. An external SSD should not be confused with an internal M.2 upgrade, which may offer a better permanent solution if the laptop has an accessible slot.
Windows cleanup and troubleshooting
Start with Windows and manufacturer tools: use Settings > System > Storage to review space usage and Storage Sense, and use Windows Update plus the laptop maker’s support page for firmware and driver information. NVIDIA, AMD, Intel, Microsoft, and the laptop manufacturer should remain the primary sources for graphics and system drivers.
For readers dealing with clutter, disk-space pressure, or general Windows troubleshooting, Outbyte PC Repair is an optional Windows PC cleanup tool. Its described use cases include cleanup, optimization, and troubleshooting. It should not be presented as a way to increase a laptop’s raw gaming performance, overcome thermal limits, or replace official drivers and hardware upgrades. Be cautious with any automated driver utility; the official manufacturer and component-vendor support pages should come first.
Which one should you buy?
- Choose the Razer Blade 18 (2026) if you want the closest thing to a high-end desktop replacement and can accept the cost, size, fan noise, and power requirements.
- Choose the HP OMEN MAX 16 if you want the broadest balance of performance, OLED availability, configuration choice, and memory upgradeability.
- Choose the Razer Blade 16 (2026) if a premium, comparatively slim design matters and you are willing to pay for it.
- Choose the Lenovo Legion 5 Gen 10 if you want a strong value proposition with an OLED option, a MUX switch, and two memory slots.
- Choose the Acer Nitro V 16S AI or Nitro V 16 AI if price is the primary concern and acceptable 1080p/1200p gaming matters more than premium materials or display color.
- Check the MSI Katana 15 HX B14W when a sale produces the right RTX 50-series, QHD, RAM, and storage combination.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is the RTX 5090 laptop GPU necessary for gaming?
No. It is aimed at buyers seeking maximum performance, high-resolution gaming, or a desktop replacement. An RTX 5060 or RTX 5070 laptop can be a more sensible choice for 1080p or 1200p gaming, depending on the games, display, GPU power limit, and price. Do not assume that every laptop with the same GPU name performs identically.
Are gaming laptops usable without their chargers?
Yes, for general use and some less demanding games, but demanding gaming normally reduces battery life sharply and peak performance generally requires the supplied power adapter. Compare battery claims carefully because light productivity endurance is not the same as unplugged gaming endurance.
Is 16GB of RAM enough for a gaming laptop in 2026?
It is a reasonable minimum for a new purchase, but 32GB is preferable for demanding games, multitasking, and content creation. Avoid 8GB unless the laptop has a clearly documented, inexpensive memory upgrade path.

Should I choose an 18-inch or 16-inch gaming laptop?
Choose an 18-inch system such as the Razer Blade 18 when maximum screen size and desktop-replacement performance matter more than portability. Choose a 16-inch model such as the HP OMEN MAX 16 or Razer Blade 16 when you want a more manageable balance of screen area, performance, and carrying convenience.
The Bottom Line
Bottom line: The HP OMEN MAX 16 is the safest all-round recommendation, the Razer Blade 18 (2026) is the premium performance leader, and the Lenovo Legion 5 Gen 10 is the value pick. Whichever model you choose, buy the exact configuration—not merely the product-family name—and prioritize the GPU tier and power limit, at least 16GB of RAM, 1TB of storage, a suitable display, and a realistic plan for plugged-in gaming.
