There is no verified best-settings preset for Squadron 42 yet. Steam currently lists a planned Q2 2027 release, and RSI said in February 2026 that the game remained in development and was not available to download. That means no representative retail build, repeatable benchmark, or confirmed final graphics menu exists for testing.

You can still prepare a sensible starting profile. Use your monitor’s native resolution, keep textures within the available graphics-memory budget, and use an upscaler only if the released game actually includes one. Treat every recommendation below as a launch-day method rather than a tested Squadron 42 preset.

What is actually known about PC graphics settings

Any page claiming a proven ultra, high, or competitive preset for Squadron 42 is getting ahead of the available evidence. The planned release window is Q2 2027, not a confirmed launch date, and RSI’s February 2026 support information described the game as unavailable for download. Without a playable build, there is no reliable frame-rate target, image-quality comparison, or setting-by-setting performance result to publish.

Star Citizen guidance can help explain the types of decisions you may need to make, but it is not a test of Squadron 42. RSI’s January 14, 2026 graphics article says resolution has a large effect on GPU and VRAM use and discusses DLSS for Nvidia cards and CIG-TSR for other hardware in Star Citizen. Those options, names, and results are not confirmed for the single-player game. Check the final PC build’s own menu before selecting any upscaler.

Minimum PC requirements, with the important qualifications

Steam’s current Squadron 42 listing gives the game-specific minimums below. They describe the hardware needed to meet the published minimum specification; they do not promise a resolution, preset, or frame rate.

Component Steam minimum listing Qualification
Operating system Windows 11 Published as a minimum requirement on the current store listing.
Processor Quad-core Intel i7 (Sandy Bridge or later) or AMD Bulldozer-or-later processor A minimum CPU family description, not a performance recommendation.
Memory 16 GB RAM System memory minimum.
Graphics card DirectX 11.1-compatible GPU with 8 GB VRAM The 8 GB figure is a listed minimum, not a benchmarked GPU tier.
Graphics API DirectX 12 Listed requirement.
Storage 150 GB available Free-space requirement on the store listing.

RSI’s December 17, 2025 requirements article covers CIG games more broadly, including Squadron 42, and lists Windows 10 or 11, a DirectX 11.1 graphics card with 4 GB of memory, a quad-core CPU supporting AVX, AVX2, and FMA3, at least 16 GB of RAM, and a 150+ GB SSD. The two documents do not present identical graphics-memory figures. For this title, use the current Steam listing’s 8 GB VRAM minimum as the more specific reference, while expecting requirements to change before release.

Why a minimum specification cannot tell you the best settings

A minimum specification does not identify a target frame rate or resolution. It also does not show how a particular scene behaves when the processor is limiting performance, how much VRAM a given texture set consumes, or whether a future build will expose an upscaler. Meeting the minimum should therefore be treated as a readiness check, not evidence that 1080p, 60 frames per second, or any named preset will be achievable.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The CPU wording is especially broad. Two quad-core processors from different generations can have very different instruction support, clocks, cache, and frame-time behavior. The Steam description names processor families, while RSI additionally calls for AVX, AVX2, and FMA3 support in its broader guidance. Check your processor’s actual instruction-set support rather than relying only on the number of cores.

The graphics requirement is likewise a memory floor, not a model recommendation. An 8 GB card satisfies the listed VRAM figure, but the eventual workload may still vary by scene, resolution, effects, and driver. No particular Nvidia or AMD model has been validated as a recommended Squadron 42 card.

A safe provisional starting profile

Use this sequence when a playable PC build is available. It avoids assuming that Star Citizen’s options are present and lets the game’s own indicators guide changes.

  1. Start at native display resolution. Set the game’s resolution to the monitor’s native value. This gives the clearest baseline for judging text, geometry, and effects before you trade image quality for performance.
  2. Apply the default or recommended preset once. Record what the game selects, then change one setting at a time. Because no title-specific benchmark exists, changing several options together would make it impossible to know which adjustment helped.
  3. Check whether an upscaler is actually available. If the final menu exposes a supported upscaling option, test it at the native output resolution. RSI recommends DLSS for Nvidia cards and CIG-TSR otherwise in its Star Citizen guidance; do not assume either name appears in Squadron 42, and do not describe those Star Citizen recommendations as confirmed here.
  4. Watch the VRAM estimate, if the game provides one. RSI explains that its VRAM bar estimates use for the selected resolution and graphics settings. Keep the indicator below the stated budget rather than running at its limit. Leave additional room for recording, streaming, browser, or overlay software.
  5. Reduce render resolution or texture quality when VRAM is the constraint. Lowering output or render resolution reduces GPU and VRAM pressure. Lowering textures can also help when the memory estimate is close to its limit, although it changes surface detail more visibly. Make one change, reload the same scene, and observe stability.
  6. Retest the same scene. Use a repeatable location and camera movement. Compare frame-rate consistency and frame-time hitching, not just a peak number. A setting that produces a higher counter but frequent stutter is not a better profile.

How to tune without making the image look bad

When the GPU is the limiting component

If lowering resolution or enabling an upscaler improves smoothness, the graphics processor is probably carrying the larger load. Keep the monitor’s native output when possible, then use the game’s own render-scale or upscaling controls if they are offered. If those controls are absent or insufficient, reduce the in-game resolution in small steps. Check fine geometry, distant objects, cockpit displays, and subtitle readability after every change.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Texture quality is a separate decision from render resolution. It primarily affects memory use and surface detail. If the VRAM indicator approaches its recommended maximum, lower textures before assuming that a faster-looking preset is stable. The correct setting depends on the final build’s memory behavior; no measured Squadron 42 texture comparison is available yet.

Acer Nitro 27in QHD 2560x1440 IPS 180Hz Gaming Monitor KG271U N3bmiipx | 0.5ms, AMD FreeSync, DCI-P3 95%, 2xHDMI, DisplayPort, Speaker, VESA Mountable, Bluelight Filter, Flickerless Technology
  • Quality Visuals: The KG271U 27" IPS monitor with 2560 x 1440 QHD resolution in a 16:9 aspect ratio presents stunning, high-quality images with excellent detail. The zero-frame design does away with the thick frames found on conventional monitors freeing up precious screen space.
  • AMD FreeSync Technology: Say “goodbye” to stuttering and tearing. With AMD FreeSync, the monitor’s frames are synced with the graphics card’s frames, which eliminates screen tearing and provide the smoothest gaming experience.
  • Up to 180Hz: The 180Hz refresh rate speeds up the frames per second to deliver an ultra-smooth 2D motion scene. With a rapid refresh rate of up to 180Hz, Acer Gaming Monitors shorten the time it takes for frame rendering, lower input lag and provide gamers an excellent in-game experience.
  • Responsive!!: Up to 0.5ms GTG (Gray to Gray) response time enhanced gamers’ in-game experience. No matter the fast-moving action or any dramatic transitions will be all rendered smoothly without the annoying effects of smearing or ghosting with KG271U Gaming Monitor.
  • New Depths of Color Accuracy: is monitor is ideal for color-critical projects producing accurate colors, supporting DCI-P3 95%. An amazing monitor for graphic designers, photographers, and film editors.

When the CPU is the limiting component

A resolution reduction may do little when the processor is limiting frame time. Large scenes, simulation, streaming, or dense encounters can expose a CPU limit even when the GPU has unused capacity. In that case, look for CPU-heavy options in the released menu, such as crowd, view-distance, simulation, or object-detail controls, but only change options that the game actually provides. There is no verified Squadron 42 setting hierarchy yet, so avoid copying a Star Citizen performance list and presenting it as a tested solution.

To identify this situation, compare a native-resolution run with a substantially lower resolution while keeping every other option fixed. If the frame rate and frame-time pattern barely change, the GPU may not be the limiting part. That observation is useful for your own system, but it is not a universal benchmark and should be repeated in more than one scene.

When stutter is the problem rather than average FPS

Use frame-time consistency as the deciding measure. Keep background recording, streaming, browser tabs, and overlays in mind because RSI specifically advises leaving VRAM room for other software. Close unnecessary applications, then retest the same scene. If stutter remains, lower the setting most closely associated with the active bottleneck instead of dropping every option to its minimum.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A stable profile is also easier to maintain after a patch. Save or write down the selected resolution, upscaler mode, texture level, and any custom changes. If an update resets the menu or changes the memory estimate, you can restore the baseline and determine which adjustment caused a difference.

Resolution and upscaling decisions

Resolution has a large effect on GPU and VRAM use, according to RSI’s cross-title graphics guidance. Native resolution is the best visual baseline because it avoids an additional reconstruction step. Upscaling can be a reasonable compromise when the GPU cannot sustain that baseline, but only if the released game includes a working implementation.

  • Native resolution: Best starting point for image-quality evaluation and interface clarity.
  • Upscaled native output: A potential performance compromise when the game exposes an upscaler; compare moving edges, foliage, particles, and text for reconstruction artifacts.
  • Lower output resolution: A fallback when GPU or VRAM pressure remains high; expect a softer image on a fixed-resolution display.

DLSS and CIG-TSR should be treated as examples of technologies discussed by RSI for Star Citizen, not as confirmed Squadron 42 features. The final menu and patch notes are the authority for available modes.

Do not assume that an upscaler automatically improves every scene. Its result can depend on the selected quality mode, motion information, interface rendering, and the game’s implementation. Compare a still scene and a moving scene, then inspect text and thin lines. If the image is distracting or unstable, native resolution at a lower overall load may be preferable.

Textures, shadows, effects, and other controls

Until a final menu is documented, it is safer to classify settings by the problem they solve than to prescribe values that may not exist. Texture quality is the first candidate when the VRAM estimate is high because it changes stored surface detail. Resolution and render scale are more direct levers for GPU workload. Other controls should be tested individually after those two.

If the eventual menu includes shadow, lighting, volumetric, reflection, effects, foliage, crowd, object-detail, or view-distance options, record both visual change and frame-time change. A setting that looks expensive may have little effect in a CPU-limited scene, while a modest-looking distance or simulation option may affect processor workload. There are no title-specific measurements to rank these controls today, so a generic “turn everything to low” list would be speculation.

Storage and system readiness

Steam lists 150 GB of available storage, while RSI’s broader CIG guidance specifies a 150+ GB SSD. Keep the distinction clear: free space is a capacity requirement, and an SSD is the storage type RSI names. An SSD does not itself make a graphics preset faster or guarantee a higher frame rate, but it is the sensible place to plan the installation if your system needs an upgrade.

An internal SSD 1TB is a practical product category for leaving room beyond the listed installation size, future patches, and other applications. No particular model or price is established here, so choose based on compatibility, capacity, warranty, and your own budget rather than a claim that one drive is required for graphics quality.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Before launch, check that Windows, the graphics driver, and the game launcher can all update without exhausting the drive. Keep the recording and streaming applications you use in mind when judging available VRAM and system memory. The game may also change its requirements during development, so leave more capacity than the exact 150 GB figure whenever possible.

Readiness checklist before release

  • Have at least the current Steam minimum of 16 GB system RAM and an 8 GB VRAM DirectX 11.1-compatible graphics card.
  • Reserve 150 GB of available storage, and preferably use an SSD because RSI’s broader CIG guidance specifies a 150+ GB SSD.
  • Verify that the processor meets the listed quad-core family requirement; RSI’s broader guidance also calls for AVX, AVX2, and FMA3 support.
  • Use Windows 11 for the title-specific Steam minimum, while noting that RSI’s broader article lists Windows 10 or 11.
  • Update drivers and leave free VRAM and system resources for recording, streaming, and overlay tools.
  • Plan to revisit the settings after release because the current requirements and graphics menu may change.

These checks do not replace a performance test. They simply prevent an avoidable mismatch between the published minimums and your machine. If your PC is below one of the listed requirements, wait for updated official specifications rather than assuming a lower preset will compensate.

A practical launch-day test procedure

When the game becomes downloadable, create a repeatable baseline before chasing a higher frame-rate counter.

  1. Write down your display resolution, refresh rate, GPU model and VRAM, CPU, RAM, and whether recording or streaming software is running.
  2. Use the default graphics profile at native resolution and load the same representative scene after each change.
  3. Record average frame rate, frame-time consistency, VRAM use, and visible image-quality changes. Do not infer a universal result from one short traversal.
  4. Repeat the comparison in a visually dense scene and a less demanding interior or corridor. A setting can behave differently when the workload shifts from GPU-limited to CPU-limited.
  5. Change one variable at a time: upscaler mode, render resolution, texture quality, then any clearly labelled CPU-heavy option.
  6. Keep the profile that delivers stable frame times and acceptable detail, not necessarily the one with the highest peak counter.

This method is also the minimum needed for a defensible future settings guide: the same PC, the same scene, comparable image-quality checks, VRAM measurements, and separate GPU- and CPU-limited observations.

For a useful comparison, allow the scene to settle before recording results and repeat a change if the outcome seems unusual. Note the game version, driver version, display resolution, and whether an upscaler was active. A patch can alter performance, so label results by build rather than treating one launch-day observation as permanent.

Common mistakes to avoid

Publishing Star Citizen settings as Squadron 42 settings

The games share an ecosystem, but a Star Citizen support page is not proof of a Squadron 42 menu option or performance result. Use RSI’s advice only as provisional background and verify every control in the released build.

Reading the minimum requirement as a 60-FPS promise

The published minimum contains no guaranteed frame rate or target resolution. Do not buy or configure hardware around an FPS claim that has not been measured in the final game.

Filling VRAM to the indicator’s ceiling

RSI advises leaving room for other software. A profile that barely fits before a recording or streaming tool starts can become unstable once that software allocates memory.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Changing every option at once

Bundled changes hide the cause of an improvement or regression. A controlled, one-setting-at-a-time process produces a profile you can reproduce after patches.

Confusing storage speed with graphics performance

An SSD can satisfy the storage guidance and help with installation readiness, but it is not a substitute for a capable GPU, sufficient VRAM, or a suitable CPU. Do not promise a frame-rate increase from a drive upgrade alone.

What remains unknown

The decisive question—which final combination gives the best image-quality and performance balance—cannot be answered until a representative build can be tested repeatedly. Final graphics options, upscaler availability, VRAM behavior, CPU scaling, and frame-rate targets remain unverified. Recheck the Steam listing, RSI support information, and the in-game menu near release rather than treating this provisional guidance as a permanent preset.

The Q2 2027 window is a plan and may move. The Windows version, memory figure, storage guidance, and menu options can all be revised as development continues. A responsible settings guide should therefore show its test build, hardware, scene, and measurements, then update them when the game changes.

Frequently Asked Questions

What are the best graphics settings for Squadron 42 on PC?

No verified best preset exists yet. Steam lists a planned Q2 2027 release, and RSI said in February 2026 that the game was still unavailable to download. Start with native resolution, then tune the released menu one setting at a time.

Can I use Star Citizen’s DLSS or CIG-TSR advice for Squadron 42?

Only as general background. RSI recommends DLSS for Nvidia cards and CIG-TSR otherwise in a Star Citizen graphics article, but those options and results are not confirmed for Squadron 42. Check the final game’s menu.

What PC specs does Squadron 42 require?

Steam currently lists Windows 11, a quad-core Intel i7 Sandy Bridge-or-later or AMD Bulldozer-or-later CPU, 16 GB RAM, a DirectX 11.1-compatible GPU with 8 GB VRAM, DirectX 12, and 150 GB of available storage. RSI’s broader CIG guidance lists Windows 10 or 11, AVX/AVX2/FMA3 support, and a 150+ GB SSD; requirements may change.

Does the 8 GB VRAM minimum guarantee 1080p or 60 FPS?

No. It is a listed minimum, not a benchmark or recommended GPU tier. It does not establish a target resolution, preset, or frame rate.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What should I lower first if performance is poor?

If the GPU or VRAM is the constraint, test the game’s upscaler if one is present, then reduce render resolution or texture quality. If the CPU is limiting frame time, resolution changes may do little; test any clearly labelled CPU-heavy controls individually.

How much storage does Squadron 42 need?

Steam lists 150 GB available, while RSI’s broader CIG guidance specifies a 150+ GB SSD. Leave additional capacity for updates and other software when possible.

Should I buy an SSD to improve graphics performance?

An SSD is appropriate for the storage requirement and installation readiness, but it does not by itself improve graphics settings or guarantee higher frame rates.

How should I benchmark the game after release?

Use the same PC, build, display resolution, and repeatable scene. Record frame-rate consistency, frame times, VRAM use, and image quality. Compare a dense scene with a lighter interior and change one setting at a time.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The Bottom Line

Bottom line: There is no tested Squadron 42 graphics preset yet. Use native resolution as your baseline, keep the game’s VRAM estimate below its budget with headroom for other software, and only use an upscaler confirmed in the final menu. Treat Steam’s 8 GB VRAM, 16 GB RAM, Windows 11, DirectX 12, and 150 GB figures as current minimums—not performance promises—and retest after launch.
