The Best Lord of the Rings Games to Play After War in the North

The best follow-up depends on what you want to preserve from War in the North: choose Shadow of Mordor and Shadow of War for combat, the Legacy Edition for three-player co-op, or Tales of the Shire for a peaceful Middle-earth life sim.

For another action-focused Middle-earth adventure, start with Middle-earth: Shadow of Mordor and continue into Middle-earth: Shadow of War. They are the closest recommendations here in terms of combat, enemies and role-playing progression, but they are not replacements for War in the North’s three-character online fellowship. If cooperative party play is the feature you want to preserve, the War in the North — Legacy Edition is the most direct option because it is the same adventure in a current Switch release. If you mainly want Tolkien atmosphere and are happy to leave battles behind, choose Tales of the Shire: A The Lord of the Rings Game.

There is no defensible universal ranking: the official pages available for these games do not provide comparable review scores, sales figures or player counts. The useful question is what you want to keep from War in the North—combat, cooperative play, character progression, Middle-earth setting or a particular mood.

Quick answer: which game fits what you liked?

If you want… Choose Why
Another combat-led Middle-earth game Middle-earth: Shadow of Mordor, then Shadow of War The pair is built around action, enemies and progression; Shadow of War continues Shadow of Mordor and adds fortress conquest and the Nemesis System.
The largest combat-focused follow-up Middle-earth: Shadow of War Its official description emphasizes a single-hero war story, individualized enemy and follower stories, fortresses, Sauron and the Ringwraiths.
Three-character online co-op War in the North — Legacy Edition The Nintendo UK listing describes hot-swapping among Eradan, Andriel and Farin, online co-op for up to three friends, and skills-and-gear progression.
A peaceful Tolkien setting Tales of the Shire: A The Lord of the Rings Game You live in Bywater, decorate a home, garden, fish, forage, cook and help neighbors instead of fighting through a campaign.

These are different kinds of recommendations rather than four entries in a critic-style league table. The official sources do not establish a shared scoring system, so the table matches features instead of pretending that one title is objectively best for every player.

Use War in the North as your baseline

The current Nintendo UK listing for The Lord of the Rings: War in the North — Legacy Edition records an 18 August 2026 release on Nintendo Switch as downloadable software. Its description gives a clear picture of the experience many players are trying to replace: three switchable heroes—Eradan, Andriel and Farin—online co-op for up to three friends, and progression through skills, abilities and gear.

#1 Best Overall
Middle Earth: Shadow of War Definitive Edition (PS4)
  • PLAY THE DEFINITIVE EDITION OF MIDDLE-EARTH: SHADOW OF WAR FROM THE AWARD-WINNING MONOLITH STUDIOS
  • Winner of over 60 awards and nominations, conquer Mordor for the Bright Lord and enjoy 50+ hours of story content, 3 playable characters and the expansive Nemesis System.
  • The Definitive Edition includes all DLC Slaughter Tribe Nemesis Expansion Outlaw Tribe Nemesis Expansion Blade of Galadriel Story Expansion Desolation of Mordor Story Expansion

That combination matters. A recommendation can match the setting while missing the party structure, or match the fighting while changing the tone completely. The games below are therefore arranged by the feature they preserve, not by an unsupported overall score.

Best action-focused route: Shadow of Mordor followed by Shadow of War

Why start with Shadow of Mordor?

Middle-earth: Shadow of War is officially described as the sequel to Middle-earth: Shadow of Mordor. That makes the first game the sensible entry point for anyone who has not played either. Starting there lets you encounter the earlier version of the pair’s combat-led approach before moving into its larger sequel, instead of beginning with a continuation whose context you have not seen.

The available official material identifies this pair as the most natural alternative for readers who want enemies, action and Tolkien’s setting. It does not provide a comparable review statistic or a complete feature-by-feature specification for Shadow of Mordor, so the recommendation should stay focused: play it first as the predecessor to Shadow of War, not because an unsupported score proves it is superior.

What Shadow of War adds to the decision

The official Shadow of War site highlights three ideas that distinguish it from a straightforward party adventure:

Rank #2
Middle-earth: Shadow of War (PS4)
  • A MONUMENTAL STORY: Immerse yourself in the epic scale of Middle-earth as you forge a new ring and siege epic fortresses to face the Dark Lord and Nazgul.
  • NEMESIS SYSTEM EVOLVED: Experience a richer and more personal world full of new enemy types, stronger personalities and deeper stories – anyone you face can now evolve from a lowly Soldier to a mighty Overlord. Personal Nemesis or Ally.
  • TURN MORDOR AGAINST SAURON: Go behind enemy lines and use strategy, cunning or brute force to conquer Sauron’s fortresses and turn them against him.
  • IN MIDDLE-EARTH: SHADOW OF WAR, NOTHING WILL BE FORGOTTEN.
  • Fortress conquest: the campaign includes taking fortresses rather than only moving through a linear sequence of encounters.
  • The Nemesis System: the site emphasizes individualized stories for enemies and followers, giving the conflict a changing cast of personal rivalries and alliances.
  • A single-hero war story: the official presentation centers on one protagonist’s war against Sauron and the Ringwraiths.

Those features make Shadow of War the strongest pick when your priority is a substantial action campaign with systems that create changing opponents and a strategic objective beyond simply reaching the next level. It is also the clearest answer to the literal question “What is the best LOTR/Tolkien-based game?” when the unstated requirement is “I want to fight through Middle-earth again.”

What it does not preserve from War in the North

Do not buy Shadow of War expecting the same three-person fellowship structure. The official page reviewed for this recommendation emphasizes its single-hero war story, fortresses and Nemesis System; it does not describe the online co-op for up to three friends listed for War in the North. That is an evidence-based distinction, not a claim that every possible mode or edition is identical in every market. Check the current store listing for the edition you intend to purchase.

The platform links on the official Shadow of War site point to PlayStation 4, Xbox One, Windows 10 and PC. Those links establish those platforms in the cited material; they do not by themselves establish a native PlayStation 5 version, current backward-compatibility behavior, or present-day availability in your country.

Closest structural match: War in the North — Legacy Edition

If what you miss is the ability to form a fellowship with two other people, the most accurate recommendation is not a different game. It is the War in the North — Legacy Edition itself.

Rank #3
Middle-Earth: Shadow of War (PS4)
  • A MONUMENTAL STORY: Immerse yourself in the epic scale of Middle-earth as you forge a new ring and siege epic fortresses to face the Dark Lord and Nazgul
  • NEMESIS SYSTEM EVOLVED: Experience a richer and more personal world full of new enemy types, stronger personalities and deeper stories - anyone you face can now evolve from a lowly Soldier to a mighty Overlord. Personal Nemesis or Ally
  • TURN MORDOR AGAINST SAURON: Go behind enemy lines and use strategy, cunning or brute force to conquer Sauron's fortresses and turn them against him
  • IN MIDDLE-EARTH: SHADOW OF WAR, NOTHING WILL BE FORGOTTEN.

What the current listing confirms

  • Release date: 18 August 2026.
  • Platform and format: Nintendo Switch downloadable software on the Nintendo UK storefront.
  • Party structure: hot-swap among Eradan, Andriel and Farin.
  • Online play: co-op for up to three friends.
  • Progression: customization through skills, abilities and gear.
  • Publisher named on the listing: Aspyr.

This is the closest mechanics match in the available source set because it retains the exact hero-party and co-op framework described above. It is best understood as a re-release or revisit, however, not as a new sequel that expands the formula. If you already own and regularly play the original, the value of the Legacy Edition depends on whether you want the Switch version and its regional availability.

Edition and region cautions

The cited page is specifically a United Kingdom Nintendo listing. It establishes a UK digital listing, not a worldwide release schedule, physical cartridge stock, price, or availability through another country’s storefront. A US, Canadian, Australian or other regional eShop may show different status, pricing or dates. Confirm the country setting on the store page before planning a purchase or a co-op session.

Likewise, “download software” should not be rewritten as “physical edition.” The available listing does not establish cartridge availability. If you need a physical copy, look for a separate listing in your own market rather than assuming the digital product has a boxed equivalent.

Best peaceful alternative: Tales of the Shire

What kind of game is it?

Tales of the Shire: A The Lord of the Rings Game is the recommendation for readers who want to remain in Tolkien’s world but are ready for a quiet life simulation instead of battles. Wētā Workshop describes life in Bywater, where your activities include decorating a home, gardening, fishing, foraging, cooking and helping neighbors. Progression is designed to happen at your own pace.

That makes it a deliberate tonal change, not a combat substitute. Someone searching for another fellowship campaign, enemy encounters or the pressure of an action game should choose the Shadow pair or revisit War in the North instead. Someone who wants the setting, domestic detail and a slower routine may find that the contrast is precisely the appeal.

Release and platform information

Wētā Workshop’s current page records a 29 July 2025 launch on PC via Steam, Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S. This is the strongest option in the source set for a reader specifically asking whether a Lord of the Rings game is available on PS5: the developer page lists PS5 directly.

An earlier Take-Two announcement dated 23 September 2024 gave 25 March 2025 as the planned launch date and included Netflix Games in its announced platform slate. That announcement was an earlier plan. The developer’s later page records the eventual 29 July release and the four platforms above, so do not present Netflix Games as a confirmed launch platform on the evidence available here.

The mood trade-off

Choose Tales of the Shire when “Middle-earth” matters more than combat mechanics. Home customization, gardening, fishing, foraging, cooking and neighborly tasks answer a different fantasy from defending a fellowship. Richard Taylor, Wētā Workshop’s Co-founder, Co-CEO and Chief Creative Officer, described it this way: “This is a beautiful way that players who are looking for a quieter, more peaceful time can discover this in a less explored corner of this universe.”

Best Value
Middle Earth: Shadow of War Definitive Edition (PS4)

The Definitive Edition includes all DLC Slaughter Tribe Nemesis Expansion Outlaw Tribe Nemesis Expansion Blade of Galadriel Story Expansion Desolation of Mordor Story Expansion

The quote captures the decision better than a generic genre label: this is an invitation to slow down in a less-explored corner of the setting, not a promise of an action sequel.

Compare the recommendations by the feature you want to keep

Feature War in the North / Legacy Edition Shadow of Mordor and Shadow of War Tales of the Shire
Combat emphasis Combat-led fellowship adventure, as described by the party, skills and gear structure. Combat-led alternative; Shadow of War emphasizes fortress conquest, the Nemesis System, Sauron and the Ringwraiths. Peaceful life simulation; the cited description centers on daily activities rather than battles.
Party or co-op structure Three switchable heroes and online co-op for up to three friends in the Switch listing. The reviewed official page does not describe the same online fellowship structure. Not stated in the cited developer description.
Progression Skills, abilities and gear. Individualized enemy and follower stories, fortress conquest and the broader sequel campaign are the highlighted systems. Progress at your own pace through home, food, outdoor and community activities.
Atmosphere Action and fellowship. War, danger and a single-hero struggle against Sauron and the Ringwraiths. Quiet Hobbit life in Bywater.
Platforms established by the cited official pages Nintendo Switch downloadable software for the UK listing. PS4, Xbox One, Windows 10 and PC links. PC via Steam, Nintendo Switch, PS5 and Xbox Series X|S.

“Not stated” in the table means the cited official description does not establish that detail. It is better to leave a comparison cell open than to infer a mode, platform or feature from the game’s genre or from an old announcement.

Choose in three steps

  1. Decide whether co-op is essential. If you need to play with up to three friends and want the three-hero structure, investigate the Switch Legacy Edition in your own regional storefront. If solo play is acceptable, continue to the next question.
  2. Decide whether you want fighting or a change of pace. Pick Shadow of Mordor and then Shadow of War for action, enemies and war. Pick Tales of the Shire for Bywater, home decoration, gardening, fishing, foraging, cooking and neighborly tasks.
  3. Check the exact edition and platform before paying. Store region, format and platform support can change. The evidence here establishes a UK Switch download listing for the Legacy Edition, the older platform links for Shadow of War, and the developer’s listed platforms for Tales of the Shire; it does not establish current prices, stock or retailer terms.

Common buying mistakes and how to avoid them

Assuming the most famous game is the best co-op replacement

Shadow of War is the strongest action recommendation, but its official presentation does not match the three-player fellowship description attached to War in the North. If you are organizing a group session, verify the multiplayer feature first rather than relying on the shared license.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Treating a planned date as the final release

The earlier 25 March 2025 date for Tales of the Shire came from a 23 September 2024 announcement. The developer’s current page records 29 July 2025. Use the later developer information when discussing its release.

Confusing a regional digital listing with worldwide stock

The Legacy Edition information comes from Nintendo UK and identifies downloadable Switch software. It does not prove that another country has the same listing, price or physical format.

Assuming PS5 support from a PS4 link

The official Shadow of War page links to PS4, Xbox One, Windows 10 and PC. Those links are not evidence of a native PS5 edition. By contrast, Wētā Workshop’s page explicitly lists PS5 for Tales of the Shire.

Final recommendation by player type

  • Action player: play Shadow of Mordor first, then Shadow of War.
  • Co-op player: look for the War in the North — Legacy Edition in your regional Nintendo store; it is the mechanics match, even though it is the same adventure.
  • Role-playing and systems player: favor Shadow of War for its Nemesis System, individualized enemy and follower stories, and fortress conquest.
  • Setting-first player: choose Tales of the Shire if a peaceful Bywater routine sounds better than another war campaign.
  • PS5 player: the cited official platform information establishes Tales of the Shire on PS5. The reviewed Shadow of War links establish PS4, Xbox One, Windows 10 and PC, not PS5.
