For most low-end Minecraft Java Edition players, start with MakeUp – Ultra Fast. It is built around performance, offers aggressive low-end presets, and lets you disable expensive effects individually. If your PC has a little more headroom, Complementary Reimagined on Potato or Low offers the best visual-quality balance. For a subtle vanilla-style upgrade, choose Sildur’s Enhanced Default.
There is no shader that delivers the same frame rate on every “low-end” PC. Your GPU, CPU, resolution, render distance, Minecraft version, resource pack, cooling, and chosen preset all matter. This guide covers Minecraft: Java Edition on PC; these recommendations do not apply directly to Bedrock Edition, consoles, Android, or iOS.

Quick picks
| Shader | Best for | Start with | Visual style | Main drawback |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| MakeUp – Ultra Fast | The weakest systems that can still run shaders | Potato or lowest profile | Customizable lighting and atmosphere | Requires tuning for the best performance |
| Sildur’s Vibrant Lite | Intel graphics and older GPUs wanting colorful lighting | Lite | Bright, colorful, dramatic | Dynamic effects can still be demanding |
| Sildur’s Enhanced Default | A restrained vanilla-style upgrade | Default or lowest available profile | Subtle and familiar | Less dramatic than full shader packs |
| Complementary Reimagined | The best balance when your PC has some headroom | Potato or Low | Polished, Minecraft-like, configurable | Reflections and volumetrics can be expensive |
| Chocapic13 | Very old hardware | Low or Toaster Edition | Basic shader lighting | Version and download-source verification can be difficult |
| Sildur’s Basic Shaders | Maximum performance with modest visual changes | Fast | Minimal enhancement | Few cinematic effects |
These are use-case recommendations, not universal benchmark results. A claim such as “this shader runs at 60 FPS” is meaningless without the exact GPU, CPU, resolution, render distance, Minecraft version, resource pack, world, and preset.
1. MakeUp – Ultra Fast: best for the weakest playable systems
MakeUp – Ultra Fast is the best first choice when performance matters more than realism. Its design emphasizes the quality-to-performance ratio, with multiple low-end profiles and individual controls for expensive effects.
#1 Best Overall
- DELUXE COLLECTION — Includes Minecraft: Java & Bedrock Edition, three Bedrock add-ons, three exclusive Character Creator items, and 700 Minecoins.
- CREATE YOUR WORLD — Build whatever you imagine in an infinite world that’s unique in every playthrough.
- EXPLORE AND CRAFT — Discover biomes, resources, and mobs, then craft your way through a sandbox world filled with surprises.
- SURVIVE THE ADVENTURE — Face mysterious foes, travel across exciting landscapes, and venture into perilous dimensions.
- PLAY TOGETHER — Play cross-platform with friends in Bedrock Edition on console, mobile, and PC, or join community servers in Java Edition on PC, Mac, and Linux. Online console multiplayer requires a platform-specific subscription (sold separately).
The pack can provide shadows, volumetric clouds, antialiasing, ambient occlusion, water reflections, bloom, motion blur, chromatic aberration, and auto-exposure. You do not have to run all of them. The project specifically identifies shadows and depth of field as resource-intensive effects that can be removed when frame rate is poor.
Recommended setup
- Start with the lowest or Potato-style profile.
- Disable depth of field.
- Disable volumetric clouds.
- Lower shadow quality or turn shadows off temporarily.
- Disable reflections if performance is still poor.
- Increase one setting at a time while checking the same area of your world.
MakeUp is a good fit when you want a noticeable shader effect but cannot afford a heavier cinematic pack. Its trade-off is that the many options can be confusing, and its visual style may look less refined than Complementary Reimagined at comparable settings. Turning off shadows also removes one of the most obvious improvements shaders provide.

2. Sildur’s Vibrant Lite: best colorful low-end shader
Sildur’s Vibrant Shaders is the better choice if you want bright colors, stronger sunset lighting, and a conventional “shader” appearance. Sildur’s official downloads include Lite and other performance-oriented variants. The project’s guidance identifies Lite and Medium as options for Intel graphics, Macs, and low-end GPUs.
Vibrant Lite is especially appealing on an older laptop or integrated GPU that can handle some dynamic lighting but struggles with demanding reflections and volumetric effects. It generally makes the sky, water, foliage, and daylight feel more animated than a subtle vanilla enhancement.
Do not interpret “Lite” as a guaranteed frame-rate target. Integrated graphics vary considerably, and animated effects, dynamic shadows, resolution, and render distance can change the result. If Lite is too slow, try Sildur’s Basic Shaders – Fast rather than forcing every effect in Vibrant to its minimum.
Vibrant’s colorful treatment is also a matter of taste. It can look more saturated and dramatic than default Minecraft, while players seeking natural colors or maximum night-time visibility may prefer Enhanced Default.

Sildur’s Enhanced Default is for players who want Minecraft to remain recognizably Minecraft. It improves lighting without making the world look like a realism-focused showcase.

- ULTIMATE COLLECTION — Includes Minecraft: Java & Bedrock Edition, five Bedrock add-ons, five exclusive Character Creator items, and 1000 Minecoins.

- EXPLORE AND CRAFT — Discover biomes, resources, and mobs, then craft your way through a sandbox world filled with surprises.

This is often the best first shader to try on a survival world. Subtle lighting is easier to live with for long sessions, less likely to make caves or nighttime exploration uncomfortable, and less visually distracting around farms and redstone builds. It also avoids the exaggerated bloom, colored shadows, and highly reflective water that some players dislike.
The compromise is obvious: the visual transformation is smaller. Screenshots will not look as cinematic, and shadow or lighting settings can still affect performance. Choose Enhanced Default when usability and familiarity matter more than maximum atmosphere.
4. Complementary Reimagined: best-looking option for modest PCs
Complementary Reimagined is the strongest visual recommendation for a low-end system with some performance headroom. It aims to preserve Minecraft’s blocky visual identity while adding polished lighting, skies, water, shadows, and atmosphere.

The official site also provides an installer that can install Iris with the shader pack.
Start with Potato on integrated graphics and Low on an older discrete GPU. Disable reflections and volumetric clouds before reducing every other setting. Keep render distance modest while testing.
Complementary Reimagined is not automatically a lightweight shader merely because it has a Potato profile. It has more effects and more visual ambition than Basic Fast or MakeUp – Ultra Fast. Shadows, reflections, ambient occlusion, volumetric lighting, and cloud effects can quickly overwhelm a weak GPU. Choose it when appearance is important and you are willing to tune the pack.
5. Chocapic13 Low or Toaster Edition: best for exceptionally old hardware
Chocapic13 is a practical last resort for hardware that cannot handle the more modern-looking choices. Its quality tiers include particularly aggressive low-end variants, including Toaster Edition. Secondary coverage has commonly identified those variants as options for very old systems, but that should not be treated as a guaranteed performance result.

The lowest profiles may look closer to enhanced vanilla lighting than to a cinematic shader. That is the point: they trade visual effects for a chance of maintaining playable performance.
Take extra care with downloads. Avoid generic shader aggregators and old reuploads. Use an author-controlled or clearly established project page, verify the Minecraft version, and do not run an executable installer bundled with a shader ZIP. If the current release source is unclear, choose MakeUp or Sildur’s instead of downloading from an unverified mirror.
6. Sildur’s Basic Shaders – Fast: the maximum-performance fallback
Sildur’s Basic Shaders – Fast is the right fallback when even Vibrant Lite is too demanding. It uses a simpler effect set, so the visual change is more modest but configuration and troubleshooting are easier.
This can be preferable to lowering a complex shader until most of its effects are disabled. If you want only a small improvement to lighting and atmosphere, Basic Fast gives you a clean starting point. If you want Minecraft to look almost entirely vanilla, Enhanced Default may be the better choice.

1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesHow to install shaders with Iris and Sodium
For a current Java Edition installation, the simplest default route is Iris with Sodium. Iris is an open-source Java shader mod designed to support many OptiFine shader packs. Its official installer can install Iris and Sodium together.
- Back up important worlds. Shader installation should not normally affect saves, but a backup is sensible before changing a modded profile.
- Confirm Java Edition. Iris is not a Bedrock, mobile, or console shader solution.
- Download Iris from its official page. Match the installer to the Minecraft version you intend to play.
- Run the installer and allow it to install Iris and Sodium.
- Launch the new profile once. This confirms that the loader starts before you add a shader.
- Download a shader ZIP from the creator’s official site, Modrinth, or a CurseForge page linked by the creator.
- Open the shader-pack folder. Use Minecraft’s shader-pack screen and its folder button when available, then place the original ZIP directly inside the folder.
- Do not unzip the pack unless its instructions explicitly require it. Do not leave it nested inside another ZIP or an extra folder.
- Select the shader in Minecraft’s video settings and begin with Potato, Low, Lite, Fast, or the lowest available profile.
- Test it in your normal world, not only in an empty superflat world.
Iris supports Minecraft 1.16.5 and newer according to its documentation, with loader support depending on the version. Iris supports Fabric on 1.16.5 and newer and NeoForge on 1.21.1 and newer; Forge is not supported. Check the current Iris documentation before combining it with an older modpack.
Do not install Iris alongside OptiFine, Canvas, or Vulkan rendering mods. Iris identifies those combinations as incompatible and warns that they can cause crashes. Resource packs that use Minecraft core shaders may also fail to work while a shader pack is active.

Settings to lower when FPS is poor
Lower shader effects first
- Shadow resolution or shadow distance
- Volumetric clouds
- Screen-space or water reflections
- Ambient occlusion
- Bloom
- Depth of field
- Motion blur
- Parallax or POM effects
- Refraction
- Volumetric fog and light shafts
Shadows, reflections, and volumetric effects usually have a larger performance cost than cosmetic effects such as bloom or motion blur. MakeUp’s documentation specifically recommends removing shadows and depth of field when more performance is needed.
Then lower Minecraft settings
- Render distance
- Simulation distance
- Entity distance
- Particles
- Clouds
- Biome blend
- Entity shadows
- Resolution scale, if your setup provides it
Render distance and simulation distance are not shader settings, but they can matter more than changing shader packs when the CPU is generating chunks or handling entities.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How to tell what is limiting performance
If GPU usage is close to maximum and lowering the game’s resolution improves frame rate, the shader is probably GPU-limited. If GPU usage is low but FPS falls while exploring or generating terrain, the CPU, memory, storage, or chunk-generation workload may be the limiting factor. Monitoring tools report usage differently, so treat these as diagnostic clues rather than universal rules.
Check whether Minecraft is using integrated graphics instead of a discrete GPU. On laptops, changing the operating system’s graphics preference can improve performance more than switching from one low-end shader to another.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
If performance worsens after several minutes, check temperatures and possible thermal throttling. Uneven motion despite a high FPS counter can indicate frame-pacing problems or background processes rather than a simple average-FPS shortage.
How to test shaders fairly
Do not compare shaders from screenshots or from unrelated YouTube FPS claims. For a useful comparison, keep these variables the same:
- Minecraft version
- Iris/Sodium version and other mods
- Display resolution
- Render and simulation distance
- Resource pack
- World and test location
- Weather and time of day where possible
- Shader preset
Move around for several minutes instead of standing still. Test locations that expose different bottlenecks: a forest, village, ocean, Nether, cave, mob farm, and an area where new chunks generate. Elytra travel and large terrain views can be much harder to render than an enclosed base.
Best Value
- Play and share with friends on console, mobile and Windows 10
- discover community creations in the new in-game store
- access new mini games and game modes through servers
Also test visibility, not just performance. A shader that looks excellent in a screenshot may make caves too dark, water too reflective, or nighttime mobs difficult to see. A stable, readable 30 FPS can be a better survival experience than an attractive preset with severe stutter.
Troubleshooting
The shader does not appear
- Confirm that you are playing Java Edition.
- Confirm that the Iris profile launches successfully.
- Open the shader-pack folder from Minecraft if possible.
- Place the original shader ZIP directly in that folder.
- Make sure the pack is not nested inside another ZIP or folder.
- Restart Minecraft.
- Check that the shader targets your Minecraft and loader version.
If the pack still does not appear, test a current release of MakeUp or Complementary Reimagined. Bedrock Edition and an unmodified launcher profile will not use Java shader packs through Iris.
Black screen or severe graphical corruption
Likely causes include an unsupported GPU feature, outdated graphics drivers, an incompatible version combination, a rendering mod conflict, or a shader feature your device cannot handle.
- Disable shaders in video settings.
- Remove the shader ZIP from the
shaderpacksfolder if necessary. - Launch a clean Iris/Sodium profile.
- Test without resource packs and rendering-related mods.
- Update the graphics driver from the GPU manufacturer.
- Reinstall only versions that match your Minecraft installation.
Do not combine Iris with OptiFine, Canvas, or Vulkan mods. If one specific shader causes the problem while others work, it is more likely a pack or device compatibility issue than evidence that Iris itself is broken.
FPS is fine indoors but poor outdoors
Lower shadow distance, volumetric effects, reflections, and render distance first. Large landscapes, ocean views, villages, new chunks, and flying can expose workloads that are not visible inside a small base.

Do not assume every shader supports Distant Horizons. Iris says that only some shader packs support it, and the pack must explicitly provide support. MakeUp documents a Distant Horizons feature for specific version combinations, along with a known black-spots issue when certain Distant Horizons options are changed. Check the exact shader, Iris, Minecraft, and Distant Horizons versions before enabling it.
Which shader should you choose?
- Choose MakeUp – Ultra Fast if your system is genuinely weak and you want the most control over performance.
- Choose Sildur’s Basic Fast if you need the highest frame rate and only modest visual changes.
- Choose Sildur’s Vibrant Lite if you have Intel or older graphics and want colorful lighting.
- Choose Sildur’s Enhanced Default if you want Minecraft to stay close to vanilla.
- Choose Complementary Reimagined Potato or Low if your PC has some headroom and appearance is the priority.
- Choose Chocapic13 Low or Toaster Edition only when very old hardware rules out the other options, and verify the download source carefully.
All of these packs should be treated as starting points. The best low-end shader is the one that remains readable and stable in the world you actually play after its expensive effects have been tuned or disabled.
