Choose materials that fit the look and purpose of the project, are practical to obtain in your edition and game mode, and come in the shapes you need. Brick is a versatile choice for floors, paths, and houses; cobblestone is an accessible survival option; and bamboo can help you reach higher with scaffolding.
How to choose building blocks
Start with the job each block needs to do, then build a palette around it. A wall, floor, path, and trim may all call for different colors or shapes. For survival builds, consider how readily you can gather the materials; in creative mode, appearance and block variants may matter more.

- Style and color: Pick materials whose colors and textures work together at the scale of the build.
- Shape options: Check whether the material has useful variants such as slabs, stairs, or walls.
- Availability: In survival, favor materials that suit your world and gathering plans.
- Purpose: Choose blocks for the specific role—such as a path, floor, exterior wall, or scaffold—not just because they look good in isolation.
Minecraft has a broad block palette, and the available blocks and states depend on edition. Microsoft’s Bedrock stable block listing is a reference for Bedrock; it should not be treated as a complete Java Edition list.

Useful blocks to consider
Brick for classic or modern builds
Brick can work across several parts of a build. Minecraft’s official brick article suggests it for floors, pathways, and whole houses, and describes brick, slab, stair, and wall forms. The article says basic Minecraft bricks are made from clay. Those variants make it easier to carry one material through a structure while changing the silhouette or edge detail.

Cobblestone for accessible survival construction
The Minecraft Wiki’s building materials tutorial describes cobblestone as strong and easy to acquire, making it a practical option for a survival house when you want a material that is accessible. This is qualitative guidance, not a measured ranking against other blocks.
Bamboo for access scaffolding
Bamboo is useful beyond decoration: Minecraft’s official bamboo article notes its use in crafting scaffolding blocks. Scaffolding can support the building process when a project requires work above ground level.

Check edition and version before choosing variants
Block availability and behavior can differ between Java and Bedrock, and can change with updates. For example, the Minecraft Java Edition 26.3 release notes say wool stairs and wool slabs were added for all wool blocks. That change is explicitly scoped to Java Edition; do not assume the same timing or behavior in Bedrock. Check the release notes for the edition and version you play when a particular shape variant matters.

Build a palette around the project
- Choose the main material: Decide what best fits the largest surfaces, such as walls or floors.
- Add shape and detail: Look for slabs, stairs, or walls that let you finish edges and transitions without introducing an unrelated texture.
- Match materials to the task: Use a practical gathering choice for survival construction, and plan access scaffolding for elevated work where useful.
- Check your edition: Confirm that the blocks and variants you want exist in your version before committing to a large build.
For larger projects or repeatable designs, Minecraft’s Structure Blocks introduction explains a Bedrock tool for working with structures. It is separate from the choice of decorative palette, but may be relevant when managing a build.
