The single-stick design is suited to N64 games built around one analog stick, but makes the controller less suitable for modern games that expect two sticks. It is not simply a cheaper copy of Nintendo’s pad: it is a different ergonomic and control-layout choice.
Does the 8BitDo controller really save $30 right now?

If you already own an original N64 controller, the 8BitDo Mod Kit is a restoration route rather than an out-of-box replacement. You still need the donor controller, and the feature’s quoted price is historical rather than a current offer.
