These are recommendations drawn from platform collections and recent editorial comparisons—not results of a shared airplane-mode test. “Offline” can also mean a game’s solo mode works without a connection while multiplayer or other features do not.

The recommendations come from Google Play’s commute collection and editorial comparisons updated in 2026 (HeyCash and Madfox). Those comparisons do not establish a common test standard, so treat them as useful starting points rather than a measured ranking.
What “offline” means on a phone
An offline collection is a helpful discovery signal, not a guarantee that every feature—or even the first launch—will work without a connection. A game may support solo play offline but reserve multiplayer, cloud saves, events, or other features for online use. The UK App Store offline collection, for example, includes a title explicitly named “8 Ball Pool™ Online Multiplayer Pool Games.” That is a reminder to check the mode, not to assume the title is fully playable offline.

Apple’s US iPhone App Store collection, “The Best Offline Games,” uses the label “No internet required” and lists Good Pizza, Great Pizza, Wordscapes, Blackbox, Automatoys, Retro Bowl, Crossy Road, Solitaire Grand Harvest, Merge Dragons!, KAMI 2, and Vampire Survivors. Apple’s UK collection, “No Wi-Fi? Play these games offline,” also features games including Minecraft, Slay the Spire, Balatro, Grand Mountain Adventure, Crossy Road, and Vampire Survivors. These are storefront editorial selections; collection inclusion does not confirm every mode or first-launch behavior.

How to choose the right game
- Match the game to your available time. A short-session runner or puzzle may suit a commute break; a management game or farming sim can offer a longer-running project.
- Check your platform and edition. Search the local App Store or Google Play listing for the exact title and edition. Availability and details may differ by region and change over time.
- Review the business model. Free, paid, ad-supported, and in-app-purchase options vary by game and storefront. In a Google Play snapshot checked on August 10, 2026, HeyCash described three of its ten picks as free and seven as paid; the free entries carried ads. That is a dated sample, not a rule for offline games.
- Decide which mode matters. If you need a campaign or solo mode, verify that specific experience rather than relying on the game’s appearance in an offline collection.
Prepare a game before you lose service
- While connected, install the game from your local storefront and open it once.
- Complete any downloads, updates, setup, or account checks the game presents.
- Before travel, disconnect from Wi-Fi and mobile data and try the exact mode you plan to play. This is a practical check, not a guarantee that future updates or online features will remain available.
- If it does not work as expected, reconnect and check the game’s listing or in-game help for requirements; choose another candidate if the needed mode depends on a connection.
