The best open-world games for worldbuilding make their settings feel like places with their own histories, rules, communities and unanswered questions—not just large maps around a story. This ranking favors worlds that reward attention, connect quests and inhabitants to their surroundings, and let players piece together meaning through exploration. It is an editorial judgment, not an objective or universally agreed scorecard.
How this ranking judges worldbuilding
Worldbuilding is more than lore volume or map size. A convincing game world connects its places, inhabitants, history, rules, quests and environmental details so they feel like parts of the same place. The ranking weighs four qualities:

- Coherence and specificity: Does the setting have recognizable rules, cultures and conditions?
- Environmental storytelling: Do places and details invite curiosity and communicate history without relying only on exposition?
- Quests and inhabitants: Do people’s problems and stories feel rooted in the world around them?
- Discoverable meaning: Can players uncover the setting’s significance through exploration and interpretation?
These are editorial criteria, not a published standardized rubric. Arkane’s discussion of environmental storytelling notes that a game can let history emerge through the world rather than explain every detail in the main story. Art Director Sebastien Mitton put the balance this way: “When it comes to seeding narrative into our worlds, every project finds its own balance.”
1. Elden Ring
Elden Ring earns the top spot for making exploration feel inseparable from interpreting its world. PlayStation’s guide describes a vast open world traversed on foot or horseback, where players discover secrets and pursue mysteries around the Elden Ring. Its appeal here is not simply that there are places to visit: the setting encourages players to ask what happened, what its strange landmarks mean and how the pieces might connect.
#1 Best Overall
That approach makes the player an active reader of the world. Clues can be encountered out of sequence, and understanding is something to pursue rather than a complete account delivered up front. For players who want discovery and mystery to drive exploration, this is the strongest fit in the ranking.

2. The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt
The Witcher 3 places its open world inside a morally ambiguous dark-fantasy setting, where choices can affect allies, enemies and the wider world, according to CD Projekt RED’s official game page. Its worldbuilding stands out because plot, side quests and local circumstances work together: secondary stories can reveal not only individual characters but also the social conditions shaping their lives.

- Available Now - Ghost of Tsushima: Legends, a new cooperative multiplayer experience inspired by Japanese folk tales and mythology.
- Beyond war, ancient beauty endures: Uncover the hidden wonders of Tsushima in this open-world action adventure.
- The rise of the Ghost: Forge a new path and wage an unconventional war for the freedom of Tsushima.
That close relationship between setting and quest is a particular strength. Rather than treating optional stories as unrelated errands, the game often uses them to show how the world’s conflicts reach ordinary people. GameDeveloper.com’s analysis contrasts this integration with Red Dead Redemption 2’s emphasis on relationships and environmental detail.

- Be Mad Max - Become the iconic post-apocalyptic warrior, crafting and upgrading Max's equipment and weapons to survive by combining melee combat, gunplay and tactical techniques. Gamers must form alliances as they work towards the goal of building their "Magnum opus."
- Immersive savage Wasteland - Explore the gritty, dynamic world while braving the treacherous landscapes, hostile weather patterns and deadly marauders.
- survive the open-world landscape - Staying alive isn't easy. Players clash with deadly factions and gangs through scores of dangerous side-missions and quests in the dynamic open-world full of exploration.
- intense vehicular combat - Engage in dynamic inter-vehicular combat, taking down enemy vehicles with a range of powerful weapons. Car combat is entirely physics-based, so no two battles are ever the Same.
- build the ultimate survival machine - Players design, customize and upgrade their ultimate vehicle-the Magnum Opus-choosing from different car chassis and a slew of upgrades including mounted weapons, armour and engines to survive another day
3. Red Dead Redemption 2
Red Dead Redemption 2 makes its world feel inhabited through character relationships and environmental detail, rather than depending chiefly on lore-heavy explanation. In GameDeveloper.com’s comparison, that emphasis offers a different route to a believable setting than The Witcher 3’s tighter integration of plot, secondary quests and setting.
This style rewards attention to how people relate to one another and to the details around them. It is especially effective for players who value a lived-in atmosphere and character-led storytelling. Its placement reflects the ranking’s emphasis on the discoverable meaning of the world as a whole, not a claim that environmental detail matters less than lore in every game.

Horizon Forbidden West builds its setting around a distinctive relationship between humans, machines and a damaged environment. PlayStation describes a post-apocalyptic world ruled by robotic beasts, where humanity is organized into tribes and faces environmental threats. That premise gives the world a clear identity and makes its central human-machine tension immediately legible.

- ELDEN RING is a fantasy action-RPG adventure set within a world created by Hidetaka Miyazaki—creator of the influential DARK SOULS video game series; and George R.R. Martin—author of The New York Times best-selling fantasy series, A Song of Ice and Fire
- Danger and discovery lurk around every corner in FromSoftware’s largest game to-date
- HIDETAKA MIYAZAKI: President and Game Director of FromSoftware Inc. Known for directing critically-acclaimed games in beloved franchises including Armored Core and Dark Souls
- GEORGE R. R. MARTIN: the #1 The New York Times bestselling author of many novels, including the acclaimed series A Song of Ice and Fire—A Game of Thrones, A Clash of Kings, A Storm of Swords, A Feast For Crows, and A Dance with Dragons
The game’s strongest case in this ranking is the specificity of that premise. A distinctive setting, however, is not by itself proof of deeper worldbuilding: the ranking also considers how much meaning players can discover and how naturally quests and inhabitants belong to their surroundings. Based on the available descriptions, its world is compellingly defined, though the evidence here supports less detail about those other dimensions than it does for the higher-ranked entries.

Which game should you choose?
- For mystery-led exploration: Choose Elden Ring.
- For quests that reveal the setting and its people: Choose The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt.
- For relationships and environmental detail: Choose Red Dead Redemption 2.
- For a vivid post-apocalyptic human-machine premise: Choose Horizon Forbidden West.
There is no authoritative universal ranking of worldbuilding quality, and the sources do not provide a common scoring standard or statistic that measures which game is best. The order above is a reasoned comparison using the same criteria, while recognizing that a player who values one kind of storytelling may reasonably prefer a different world.
