For most PS4 owners, the genuine Sony DUALSHOCK 4 wireless controller is the safest all-around choice: it is the standard PlayStation 4 controller, and Sony documents how to pair and use it. Choose a licensed pro controller if remapping and extra customization matter more, or a HORI Wired Mini if a smaller pad is the priority and you can live without several DUALSHOCK 4 features.
Best overall: Sony DUALSHOCK 4 wireless controller
The DUALSHOCK 4 is the straightforward pick for standard PS4 play. Sony lists it as a PS4 controller and provides first-party guidance for pairing, charging, settings, and troubleshooting. That makes it the most defensible default when you want the familiar official layout and a documented route to getting connected.
Before buying, check that the listing is for a genuine DUALSHOCK 4, and verify the seller, condition (new, used, or refurbished), and exact model. Availability and the identity of products being sold can vary; the available official information does not establish current prices or stock.
Best for extra controls: a licensed PS4 pro controller
If you want more control over button layout or sticks, consider a PS4-compatible pro controller such as the Razer Raiju or Nacon Revolution Pro. PlayStation describes features on these models including remapping, profiles, trigger adjustments, and stick customization. Check the documentation for the exact model and generation: products from the same brand do not necessarily share identical PS4 compatibility or features.

PlayStation’s 2016 announcement about the Razer Raiju and Nacon Revolution controllers described their development as a collaboration with SIE. That historical product statement is not an independent performance test, so it does not establish that either controller is faster, more durable, or better in play than a DUALSHOCK 4.
Best smaller option: HORI Wired Mini
PlayStation describes HORI Wired Mini gamepads as 40% smaller than a DUALSHOCK 4. The reduced size may suit players who prefer a compact controller, but the mini pad leaves out several features found on the standard controller.

Pair a DUALSHOCK 4 with your PS4
- Connect the controller to the PS4 using a USB cable.
- Press the PS button to pair it with the console.
- After the controller has enough charge, disconnect the cable for wireless play.
A DUALSHOCK 4 pairs with one console at a time. A PS4 can have up to four controllers connected.

Can you add rear buttons to a DUALSHOCK 4?
Sony’s DUALSHOCK 4 back-button attachment is compatible only with a DUALSHOCK 4 wireless controller. Do not assume it will fit or work with third-party pads.
