There is no single best ship for every Starfield player. The right choice depends on what you need the ship to do, what you have unlocked, and whether you want a ready-made vessel or a platform to rebuild. For an early combat reward, consider the Razorleaf; for a combat-oriented quest reward, the Star Eagle; for a Kid Stuff character, the Wanderwell; and for New Game Plus, the Starborn Guardian. These are role-based candidates, not a verified ranking of current ship stats.
Which ship fits your playstyle?
The following options have distinct acquisition routes and use cases. Their descriptions of combat strength come from StarfieldDB’s editorial guide, not from a current, directly comparable in-game stat test.

| Ship | Best fit | How you get it | Important caveat |
|---|---|---|---|
| Razorleaf | Early-game player looking for a quest-reward combat ship | Earned through the Mantis mission, according to StarfieldDB. | Its early-game combat suitability is the guide’s assessment; compare its current stats with your needs in-game. |
| Star Eagle | Player who wants a combat-oriented quest reward with room for cargo | Received after finishing the Freestar Collective questline, according to StarfieldDB. | The guide describes it as heavily armed and spacious, but does not establish a current measured performance ranking. |
| Wanderwell | Early-game player who chose the Kid Stuff trait | Gifted when the character has the Kid Stuff trait, according to StarfieldDB. | This route is conditional; characters without the trait should not plan around receiving it. |
| Starborn Guardian | Endgame or New Game Plus player who wants a distinctive ship | Obtained by reaching the ending and entering New Game Plus, according to StarfieldDB. | It is a unique vessel with limited customization, so it is a poor fit if rebuilding the ship is the priority. |
This shortlist is illustrative, not exhaustive. Available sources do not establish a complete, current set of comparable ship stats, vendor prices, and stock with which to name a definitive winner in every category.
Check whether you can fly and upgrade the ship
A ship’s class is an access gate, not a guarantee that it is usable as soon as you find or buy it. Bethesda’s Piloting skill guide says Piloting rank 3 unlocks Class B ships and rank 4 unlocks Class C ships. Check your rank before choosing a higher-class ship as an immediate solution.

- Start your journey by customizing your appearance and deciding your Background and Traits
- Venture through the stars and explore more than 1000 planets
- Pilot and command the ship of your dreams.
Ship Design also affects which modules you can install: Bethesda’s skill descriptions describe progressively improved module unlocks. A good choice may therefore be a capable base ship you can develop as your skills advance, rather than a vessel with the most impressive starting configuration.
Compare the stats that matter for your job
Bethesda’s ship overview guidance lists cargo, hull, reactor class, crew, jump distance, shields, weapons, value, and mass among the details shown for a ship. Prioritize the figures that match your purpose instead of assuming class or price settles the question.

- Includes: Starfield Standard Edition (Disc)
- Travel to the stars in this next-gen RPG from the award-winning creators of The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim and Fallout 4
- Create a character according to your imagination and explore the endless expanses in unparalleled freedom
- The goal of this epic journey? The answer to humanity's greatest question
- Combat and survival: Check shield, hull, and weapon groups. Bethesda describes shields as absorbing damage and hull as the damage a ship can sustain before destruction.
- Hauling: Give cargo capacity priority if your main goal is moving loot or supplies. A combat rating alone will not tell you how much you can carry.
- Travel: Compare jump distance alongside fuel and mass for the routes you expect to take; a ship’s role may make reach more valuable than extra armament.
- Crew and upgrades: Look at crew capacity and reactor class, then consider whether your skills let you install the modules you want.
- Acquisition effort: A quest reward or trait reward has a different time and eligibility cost from a purchase. The cited ship guide provides routes for the four examples above, but not verified current prices.
For a multi-role compromise, decide which need is non-negotiable—combat, cargo, or jump reach—and accept trade-offs in the others. The available sources do not support a universal winner for that combination.

Bethesda’s ship-building guidance says weapons must be assigned in the editor to fire, and advises checking for flight errors. After buying or modifying a ship, review its editor status and weapon assignments rather than assuming installed parts are automatically ready for use.
Rank #3
- TELL YOUR STORY - In Starfield the most important story is the one you tell with your character. Start your journey by customizing your appearance and deciding your Background and Traits. Will you be an experienced explorer, a charming diplomat, a stealthy cyber runner, or something else entirely? The choice is yours. Decide who you will be and what you will become.
- EXPLORE OUTER SPACE - Venture through the stars and explore more than 1000 planets. Navigate bustling cities, explore dangerous bases, and traverse wild landscapes. Meet and recruit a memorable cast of characters, join in the adventures of various factions, and embark on quests across the Settled Systems. A new story or experience is always waiting to be discovered.
- CAPTAIN THE SHIP OF YOUR DREAMS - Pilot and command the ship of your dreams. Personalize the look of your ship, modify critical systems including weapons and shields, and assign crew members to provide unique bonuses. In deep space you will engage in high-stakes dogfights, encounter random missions, dock at star stations, and even board and commandeer enemy ships to add to your collection.
- DISCOVER, COLLECT, BUILD - Explore planets and discover the fauna, flora, and resources needed to craft everything from medicine and food to equipment and weapons. Build outposts and hire a crew to passively extract materials and establish cargo links to transfer resources between them. Invest these raw materials into research projects to unlock unique crafting recipes.
- LOCK AND LOAD - Space can be a dangerous place. A refined combat system gives you the tools to deal with any situation. Whether you prefer long-range rifles, laser weapons, or demolitions, each weapon type can be modified to complement your playstyle. Zero G environments add a chaotic spectacle to combat, while boost packs give players freedom to maneuver like never before.
Account for the current update
Bethesda’s Free Lanes update page describes improvements to exploration, customization, and combat, including ship modules and X-Tech for optimizing ship systems. Advice based on older builds may not account for those systems, so treat older rankings and build recommendations as potentially stale. Bethesda’s page also lists Starfield as available on PlayStation 5.
