It keeps the compact, D-pad-first feel associated with 16-bit consoles while adding clickable analog sticks, rumble, motion controls, Home and Screenshot buttons, Bluetooth, rechargeable power and USB-C. Choose the 8BitDo Pro 2 instead if you need a conventional dual-stick shape, Hall Effect joysticks, rear buttons and multiple profiles. For original SNES or N64 hardware, buy the dedicated receiver-based model for that console rather than assuming a Bluetooth pad will work.
“Modern consoles” is not a single compatibility category. A controller may support Switch or Switch 2 yet have no documented PlayStation or Xbox support. How to choose a retro controller
Start with the game library and the hardware you will actually connect. A retro shell is not automatically better for every retro game: an SNES-inspired pad is excellent for platformers, fighting games and top-down titles built around a D-pad, while a dual-stick pad is more comfortable for 3D games, modern indie releases and PC games that expect analogue movement and camera control. N64 collections have their own requirements because the original console’s three-pronged shape and central stick do not map neatly to a standard modern pad.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Match the layout to the games
- 2D and 16-bit libraries: pick a compact D-pad-first controller such as the SN30 Pro. Its analogue sticks and modern system buttons are available when needed, but the face buttons and cross-shaped pad remain the focus.
- Mixed retro and modern PC games: choose the Pro 2. It has the familiar two-stick arrangement, clickable sticks, two assignable rear buttons and profile support, so you do not have to change grip when moving between eras.
- N64 collections: use the 8BitDo 64 only when N64-specific placement is the priority. Its layout is deliberately specialized and, as Tom’s Guide’s May 21, 2026 review notes, less suitable as an all-purpose modern controller.
- Original hardware: buy the receiver intended for that console. Bluetooth compatibility with a Switch or computer does not make a controller compatible with an original SNES or N64.
Confirm the exact platform and mode
“Switch compatible” can mean a particular wireless mode, a wired USB mode or support added by a firmware update. Read the current product page and support instructions for the exact revision. The Pro 2, for example, uses a four-way switch to select Switch, Android, D-input or X-input modes; selecting the wrong position can make a computer or console fail to recognize it even when the hardware is supported.

8BitDo SN30 Pro: the compact all-rounder
The SN30 Pro is the strongest fit for players who want a familiar SNES-like silhouette without giving up modern controls. Its defining compromise is physical size: it preserves the compact, flat pad shape instead of adopting the larger handles of a contemporary dual-stick controller. That makes the D-pad and face buttons feel central for 2D games, while the two clickable analogue sticks provide the inputs required by 3D and modern titles.
What you get
- Clickable analogue sticks, so stick presses can be assigned to functions that older pads did not have.
- Rumble and motion controls, subject to the capabilities of the connected system and selected mode.
- Home and Screenshot buttons for supported modern platforms.
- Bluetooth wireless operation and USB wired operation through USB-C.
- X-input or D-input operation over Bluetooth, useful for separating modern Windows games from software that expects a generic DirectInput device.
- Rechargeable power rather than disposable batteries.
The manufacturer lists support for Switch and Switch 2, Windows, SteamOS, Android, Apple platforms and Raspberry Pi on the official SN30 Pro page. Those are platform-level listings, not a promise that every feature behaves identically everywhere. Motion, rumble, system buttons and button labels can depend on the operating system, game and input mode.
Who should buy it
Choose the SN30 Pro when your priority is a D-pad-first feel and you regularly play 2D games, classic console collections or emulated 8-bit and 16-bit software. It is also a practical travel pad because the compact shape is easier to pack than a full-size controller. If your PC library is dominated by first-person games, racing games or titles that require frequent camera control, the short handles and compact stick spacing may be less comfortable than the Pro 2.
8BitDo Pro 2: the fuller modern layout
The Pro 2 is the better choice when “retro” describes the styling rather than the control scheme. It uses a conventional dual-stick arrangement and adds features aimed at players who switch between genres or want to customize controls.

- HD Display: Connect to the HDMI port to stream or mirror content to an external monitor in resolutions of up to 4K@30Hz. Note: The USB-C ports do not support video output.
- What You Get: Anker 332 USB-C Hub (5-in-1), welcome guide, our worry-free 18-month warranty, and friendly customer service.
Features that distinguish it
- Hall Effect joysticks: the sticks use a contactless sensing design intended to reduce the wear mechanism associated with traditional potentiometer sticks. This specification does not guarantee a particular lifespan or eliminate every possible fault.
- Two rear buttons: each can be assigned to an additional function, letting you keep thumbs on the sticks in games that support remapping.
- Three custom profiles: save separate mappings for different games or systems and recall them without rebuilding the layout each time.
- Four-way mode switch: select Switch, Android, D-input or X-input before pairing or connecting.
- Motion controls for Switch: available when the controller is operating in the supported Switch mode.
- Bluetooth and USB-C: use wireless play where supported or connect by cable for a direct wired link.
8BitDo lists Windows, Switch and Switch 2, SteamOS, Android, Apple platforms and Raspberry Pi for the Pro 2. The manufacturer says Switch 2 support requires a firmware update; check the current support instructions before pairing. The listed minimum versions include Windows 10 version 1903, SteamOS 3.7.13 and Switch 2 system version 20.1.1.
Important Switch limitations
On Switch, the Pro 2 provides standard vibration rather than HD Rumble, and 8BitDo states that amiibo scanning is not supported. If those two functions are essential to your games, retain a controller that supports them instead of treating the Pro 2 as a feature-for-feature replacement for Nintendo’s own hardware.
8BitDo 64: choose it for N64 games
The 8BitDo 64 is a specialist controller, not the default recommendation for every retro library. Tom’s Guide’s review, published May 21, 2026, reports that the Bluetooth version works with PC, Android, Switch, Switch 2 and Analogue 3D. A separate 2.4G version connects to an original N64 through its supplied dongle; that version does not retain the Bluetooth model’s Switch and Android compatibility.

8BitDo SN30 2.4G NT: for original SNES and SFC hardware
The SN30 2.4G NT is a hardware-specific choice for original Super Nintendo Entertainment System and Super Famicom consoles. It is not simply an SN30 Pro with a different wireless protocol: it ships with an SNES receiver designed for the original console port.
The manufacturer’s support FAQ distinguishes it from the SN30 2.4G made for NES, SFC and SNES Classic use. The FAQ also states that the SN30 2.4G NT can operate on Windows 10 and Switch through a USB cable. It cannot pair with other 8BitDo receivers or adapters, so an existing receiver from another product family is not a substitute for the bundled SNES receiver.
PC and Steam: wired, Bluetooth and input modes
On Windows, first decide whether the game expects X-input or D-input. X-input is generally the safer starting point for contemporary PC games; D-input can be useful for older software or emulators that expose a generic controller configuration. The SN30 Pro supports X-input or D-input over Bluetooth. The Pro 2 exposes the same choice through its mode switch.

- In Steam, open Settings > Controller and confirm that the controller appears. Configure per-game layouts only after Steam detects it.
- Start the game and test every required input, including analogue movement, stick clicks, rumble and system buttons. If the buttons are swapped, change the input mode or the Steam Input layout rather than remapping blindly inside the game.
8BitDo’s Steam compatibility page lists specific controllers and firmware requirements. For the controllers listed there, 8BitDo says their features are supported through Steam Input and that third-party drivers are not required. That statement applies to the named products and stated firmware versions on the page, not to every 8BitDo controller or every Linux distribution.

SteamOS and handheld PCs
The SN30 Pro and Pro 2 are both listed for SteamOS. The Pro 2 page specifies SteamOS 3.7.13 as a minimum version. Keep SteamOS updated, select the controller’s intended mode before pairing, and test the game’s layout through Steam Input. A controller can pair successfully while still presenting the wrong button labels if the selected mode does not match the game’s expected input standard.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Switch and Switch 2 setup
For Switch or Switch 2, use the mode and firmware combination documented for the exact controller. The Pro 2 has a dedicated Switch position; the SN30 Pro is listed for both systems on its product page. If a controller is not detected, update the firmware first, remove the old Bluetooth pairing, reboot the console and pair again.
After connection, test the functions that matter to you rather than assuming feature parity with a first-party pad. The Pro 2’s standard vibration is not HD Rumble, and it does not scan amiibo. Motion controls are listed for the Pro 2 in Switch mode, but individual games can expose motion input differently.
What “modern consoles” does—and does not—mean here
The documented evidence in this comparison covers PC, SteamOS, Switch, Switch 2, Android, Apple platforms, Raspberry Pi, Analogue 3D and, for the dedicated 2.4G variants, original SNES/SFC or N64 hardware. It does not provide a complete compatibility survey for PlayStation or Xbox.

Do not infer support from a USB plug, Bluetooth pairing screen or a controller’s general popularity. Console authentication, button mapping, firmware and receiver protocols can differ between generations. The 8BitDo 64 review specifically reports that its controller is not compatible with PS5 or Xbox; for other models, the absence of a documented listing should be treated as “unconfirmed,” not as a promise of compatibility.
Connection types and receiver rules
Bluetooth
Bluetooth is the most flexible option for listed computers, mobile devices and modern consoles. It avoids a dongle, but the controller must use the correct input mode and may need a firmware update for newer system software.
USB
USB is the simplest fallback when wireless pairing is unreliable or when you want a direct connection. The SN30 Pro and Pro 2 support USB-C. The SN30 2.4G NT’s documented Windows 10 and Switch operation is wired over USB, even though its original-SNES connection uses a receiver.
Recommended Free Tools
Product-specific 2.4G receivers
Receivers are not interchangeable by default. The SN30 2.4G NT requires its bundled SNES receiver and cannot use other 8BitDo receivers or adapters. The 8BitDo 64’s 2.4G edition likewise depends on its N64 dongle. Keep the receiver with the controller when transporting or reselling it.
A buying checklist
- Identify the exact console, computer operating system and game type.
- Choose D-pad-first, full dual-stick or N64-specific geometry before comparing extra features.
- Confirm the exact model revision and connection type; Bluetooth and 2.4G versions can have different compatibility.
- Check the manufacturer’s current firmware and minimum system versions.
- Decide whether you need motion controls, rumble, HD Rumble, amiibo scanning, rear buttons or saved profiles.
- For original hardware, verify that the correct receiver is included and that it is made for your console.
- For PC, determine whether your game needs X-input, D-input or Steam Input.
- For Switch 2, verify support and any required update rather than relying on a listing that only says “Switch.”
- Do not assume PlayStation or Xbox support unless the manufacturer or a reliable platform-specific test documents it.
Which one should you buy?
Buy the SN30 Pro if you want the most convincing compact, SNES-inspired experience while retaining analogue sticks, modern system buttons, rumble, motion controls and both wireless and wired options. Buy the Pro 2 if comfort in 3D games, Hall Effect sticks, rear buttons and profile switching matter more than a small 16-bit silhouette. Buy the 8BitDo 64 only when N64-specific games justify its specialized layout, and select the Bluetooth or 2.4G edition according to whether you need modern systems or an original N64. Buy the SN30 2.4G NT when the target is an original SNES or SFC and you want the supplied receiver rather than a modern Bluetooth connection.
