For a Jackbox-style setup, one person can own and run the game while friends watch the shared screen and enter answers from a phone, tablet, or computer browser.
This guide covers the equipment, invitations, game formats, privacy settings, timing, accessibility choices, and fixes that keep a remote party moving without making guests install unnecessary software.

Plan the night before you send invitations
Decide the basic shape first. Your invitation should answer four questions immediately: when the call starts, where guests will join, what they need to bring, and whether a costume or snack theme is optional or expected. Pick one main game and one backup so a compatibility problem does not end the evening.
- Choose the game and platform. Confirm the title’s current player limit, supported device, and whether guests need a second device or an account.
- Set a start time and a late-arrival plan. Include a five-to-ten-minute connection window rather than treating the advertised start as the moment the first round begins.
- Send the call link separately from the game-room code. The call link can go in the invitation; the game code should be sent privately after guests are admitted.
- Tell guests what to prepare. For a browser-controller game, that usually means an internet-connected phone, tablet, or computer. Mention headphones if people will be in shared spaces.
- Test the host setup. Open the game, share a window, check game audio, and verify that a second device can reach the controller page.
- Keep a backup activity ready. A spooky would-you-rather question, Halloween trivia prompt, or costume show-and-tell can fill a few minutes without requiring another installation.
Choose a format that matches your group
Remote play is not one universal feature. The best method depends on the devices your friends already own, how many people will participate, and whether the game’s audio and prompts remain readable through screen sharing.

Video call with screen sharing
This is the simplest explanation for most guests: everyone joins the same call, the host runs the game, and the host shares the game window. Each player uses a browser-capable phone, tablet, or computer as a controller when the title supports that arrangement. It works well when guests are already comfortable with the chosen video-call service.
Keep the call visible while the game is running, and share the specific game window rather than an entire desktop when the service allows it. If guests cannot hear game sounds, stop sharing and select the option that includes computer audio before sharing again. A wired connection is preferable for the host when available, according to Jackbox’s remote-play guidance, because the host is sending both the game picture and the call.
Steam Remote Play Together
Steam Remote Play Together lets one owner stream a local co-op title to invited friends. Jackbox’s remote-play page describes support for up to four players, or more with faster connections, on that route. That is the publisher’s description on a page dated December 5, 2023, not a promise for every game or a guarantee of current limits. Check the selected title and current Steam behavior before relying on a particular capacity.
Discord screen sharing
Discord can carry the call and the shared game in one place. The same Jackbox support page describes Discord play with the game and video for up to nine friends. Because that statement is tied to the December 5, 2023 support article, confirm the present limit and your server’s settings before inviting a larger group.
Use the game’s own player and audience rules
Jackbox says most of its games support one to eight active players, while additional people can often join as an audience and influence results. The listed player count is a requirement for active play, and audience participation is available in the vast majority of its games, but the exact rules vary by title. Check the game’s current lobby screen or support page before promising everyone a turn.

Know what the host and guests need
The host device
The host needs a compatible laptop, desktop PC, console, smart TV, or other supported device that can run the selected game and make its picture visible to remote guests. For the Jackbox model, one person buys and installs a Party Pack, launches a game, and displays the lobby. Friends do not each need to purchase the same title.
A laptop is therefore an optional purchase, not a requirement for every party. If you already have a compatible PC, console, smart TV, or another supported device, use it. Buy or borrow a computer only when your existing hardware cannot run the game or share its screen reliably.

The guest device
In Jackbox’s browser-controller setup, guests visit jackbox.tv and enter the room code on a phone or another internet-capable device. The controller runs in a browser; guests do not need a separate mobile app or a Jackbox account. They still need a way to view the shared game screen, normally the call device or a second screen.
Ask guests to charge phones before the call and keep the controller page open. A single device can sometimes handle both the call and controller, but switching between them can hide prompts or interrupt audio. A second device is more comfortable when available.
What one copy does and does not cover
One host copy is enough for friends to join a Jackbox game, but that rule describes Jackbox’s own products. Do not assume another online party game has the same licensing model; check its current instructions before sending an invite.

Set up the game and call step by step
- Install and update the game on the host device. Launch it once before party day so downloads, sign-ins, and controller pages are not first-time surprises.
- Create the video call or Discord room. Use a private room or invite-only server channel. Give the call a recognizable name such as “Halloween game night.”
- Test screen sharing with a second person. Confirm that text is readable, the game is not cropped, and game audio is included. If the game opens full-screen and makes it difficult to return to the call, turn off full-screen mode in the lobby settings; Jackbox’s Party Pack 10 guidance specifically recommends that adjustment for this problem.
- Check the controller route. On a test phone, open
jackbox.tv, enter a sample room code, and submit a response. This catches browser restrictions and Wi-Fi problems before guests arrive. - Prepare the invitation. Include the date, time zone, call link, expected arrival time, controller-device reminder, and optional costume or snack prompt. Do not publish the game-room code in the invitation.
- Open the call early. Admit guests, check microphones, and ask people to mute when they are not speaking. Keep the game lobby hidden while players connect.
- Send the room code privately. Message it only to invited players after they are in the call. Let everyone enter before revealing the shared game screen.
- Explain the first round. Tell players where to type, how to submit, whether audience members can vote, and what to do if a prompt disappears. Then start the game.
Keep the lobby private
A visible room code can let an uninvited person enter before the host notices. Jackbox recommends hiding the lobby screen at the beginning of each new game, sending the code privately to invited players, and revealing the shared screen only after they have joined. Some listed games also provide password-protected rooms.

Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteThese steps protect the game lobby, not the video call itself. Use the call service’s waiting room, invite controls, or server permissions as well. If an unknown player appears, pause before starting, remove them from the game or call, generate a new room code if the title permits it, and resend the replacement privately.
Set timers, content and participation for comfort
Give remote players enough reading time
Small screens, variable connections, and the effort of switching between a call and a controller can make normal timers feel short. Jackbox says many of its games offer extended timer settings. Turn them on when guests are new to the game, using phones, or joining from slower connections.
Check age and content settings
Jackbox’s game-night guidance notes that its titles are rated Teen. Some recent titles include a family-friendly setting, moderation of player-created content, and strict profanity filtering. Those options are title-specific, so inspect the exact game before inviting children or a mixed-comfort group. Do not describe a game as child-safe solely because it is a party game.
Make participation optional
Invite costumes, snacks, and speaking turns without making them mandatory. A guest can participate through the controller and chat even if they do not want to appear on camera. Tell people how to step away briefly and rejoin so nobody feels pressured to remain visible for the entire event.

Add Halloween atmosphere without adding technical risk
Put the theme in the invitation, opening activity, and visual details while keeping the main game easy to join. Ask guests to wear a costume if they want, bring a favorite snack or drink, or choose a spooky virtual background. Start a Halloween playlist before the game begins, then lower or stop it once game audio matters.
Use one low-prep warm-up while people arrive: a spooky would-you-rather question, one Halloween trivia prompt, or a quick costume show-and-tell. These activities require no extra software and give late arrivals a natural entry point.
Example 75-minute schedule
The following is a flexible example, not a universal ideal. Adjust it to the game, time zones, and energy of your group.
| Minutes | Activity | Host action |
|---|---|---|
| 0–10 | Arrivals and audio checks | Admit guests, confirm microphones, and help anyone open the controller page. |
| 10–20 | Warm-up | Ask one spooky question or invite a brief costume show-and-tell while late guests join. |
| 20–60 | Two short game rounds | Explain the first round, keep the lobby private, and extend timers if needed. |
| 60–70 | Costume or story break | Pause for snacks, a quick story, or a group vote. |
| 70–75 | Screenshot and sign-off | Ask everyone to pose, take the screenshot, and share the next-call plan. |
Run the event smoothly once everyone arrives
Open with a clear explanation
Say which screen to watch, which device is the controller, and how answers are submitted. Demonstrate one harmless practice action if the game allows it. Tell guests whether audience members can affect scores and whether they should keep microphones muted during prompts.

Do not restart a round every time someone joins. Ask the late guest to enter the current room code privately, then explain whether the title allows them to join the active player list or audience. Use the warm-up or a break between rounds to catch them up.

Protect game audio and conversation
When players need to read or think, lower background music and ask for microphone muting. During discussion rounds, restore conversation deliberately rather than leaving every microphone open. If the call service offers separate volume controls, keep voices loud enough to understand without allowing game sounds to overwhelm them.
Troubleshoot the common failures
The shared screen is black, cropped, or unreadable
- Stop sharing and select the specific game window again.
- Disable full-screen mode in the game lobby if switching back to the call is difficult.
- Increase the game window size or reduce other windows so text is not compressed.
- Ask guests to enlarge the shared-screen view and rotate a phone horizontally when appropriate.
Guests can see the game but cannot hear it
- Stop sharing, enable the call service’s computer-audio option, and share again.
- Check that the host’s operating-system output is not muted.
- Use headphones to prevent the call microphone from feeding game audio back into the room.
A controller will not connect
- Confirm the guest is on the correct
jackbox.tvpage and has typed the current room code exactly. - Refresh the browser page and re-enter the code if the lobby changed.
- Switch from a restrictive in-app browser to a normal browser.
- Move the controller to a stronger Wi-Fi or mobile-data connection if available.
The room code was exposed
- Pause before starting and remove any unknown participant.
- Hide the lobby again and send the code through a private message.
- Use a password-protected room when the selected title offers one.
- If the title supports generating a new code, replace the exposed room rather than relying on secrecy after the fact.
The group is too large for active turns
Use the title’s audience mode where available, or divide the evening into two teams or two sessions. Jackbox says most of its games support one to eight active players, with audience participation in many titles; verify the exact game before promising a place in the active roster.
The host’s connection is unstable
- Stop unrelated downloads and close applications that use upload bandwidth.
- Use wired internet when possible, as Jackbox recommends for remote play.
- Reduce video quality or camera use in the call while keeping the game share readable.
- Move the host closer to the router or switch to a more reliable connection before restarting the round.
Make the invitation copy practical
A concise invitation prevents most setup questions. Adapt this wording to your group:
“Halloween game night starts at 8 p.m. UTC on Friday. Join the call from this link at 7:50 for an audio check. Bring a phone or browser-capable device for the game controller. Costumes and snacks are welcome but optional. I’ll send the private room code after everyone is in the call. If the main game does not cooperate, we’ll switch to the backup.”
Replace the time with the actual time zone, add the call link, and name the controller page only if your selected game uses one. Keep the room code out of group chats that include people who were not invited.
Decide what, if anything, to buy
Start with equipment you already own. The host needs a compatible game-running device and a way to share its screen; guests need a viewing device and, for Jackbox’s browser-controller model, an internet-capable device for entering answers. A laptop is useful when no existing computer or console can run and share the game, but it is not an automatic requirement.
Digital party games and game packs are the relevant purchase category. Prices and platform availability change, so check the selected game’s current store listing immediately before buying rather than relying on an old figure. One host copy can be enough for Jackbox guests, while unrelated titles may use different ownership or account rules.
