If you only play three: choose Final Fantasy VII Rebirth for a huge, character-driven RPG; Balatro for endlessly replayable short sessions; and Animal Well for discovery, secrets, and exploration. If your priority is playing with friends, start with Helldivers 2. Puzzle fans should choose Lorelei and the Laser Eyes, while strategy fans should look at Unicorn Overlord.
This is a retrospective of the strongest games released in the first half of 2024, from January 1 through June 30. That cutoff matters: later standouts such as Astro Bot and Metaphor: ReFantazio belong to the wider 2024 conversation, but not to this midyear shortlist.
How this list was chosen
Release window: January 1 through June 30, 2024. Geography: U.S. release dates and platform availability unless otherwise noted. Eligible: new games, substantial remakes, and significantly expanded editions released during that period. Excluded from the main list: DLC, expansions, ordinary ports, compilations, mobile-only releases, and unfinished Early Access games.

It also keeps Hades II out of the finished-game recommendations despite its obvious quality.
The list combines critical consensus with practical usefulness: execution, originality, lasting value, audience fit, platform access, completion status, prerequisites, multiplayer requirements, and the seriousness of each game’s drawbacks. It is not simply a reproduction of a review-score table.
The distinction is important because aggregate scores tend to favor games with large review footprints, major platforms, conventional genres, and substantial marketing support. The Metacritic midyear snapshot, with scores recorded on June 26, placed Final Fantasy VII Rebirth first with a 92, followed by Animal Well and Balatro at 90. Tekken 8 also scored 90, Like a Dragon: Infinite Wealth scored 89, and Lorelei and the Laser Eyes and Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door scored 88. GQ’s more subjective July 2024 selection put Balatro first, Rebirth second, Paper Mario third, Lorelei fourth, and Helldivers 2 fifth. Scores can differ by platform and change as additional reviews are added, so they are evidence rather than a universal answer.

The best games of the first half of 2024
1. Final Fantasy VII Rebirth — best large-scale RPG
Released February 29, 2024, on PS5. Final Fantasy VII Rebirth is the clearest choice for players who want a lavish, expansive role-playing game with cinematic presentation, real-time combat, a large world, memorable characters, and a conspicuous amount of optional activity. It was the highest-scoring game in Metacritic’s June 26 midyear snapshot, with a 92.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:

- Ethernet (10BASE-T, 100BASE-TX, 1000BASE-T), IEEE 802.11 a/b/g/n/ac/ax, Bluetooth 5.1
- HDR technology, 8K output, 4K TV gaming, Up to 120 fps with 120Hz output, Tempest 3D AudioTech
- What's Included: Sony PlayStation 5 Disc Version; Wireless controller; USB cable, HDMI cable, AC power cord. Nogtox PVT HDMI_cable
Its scale is both its selling point and its warning label. The game offers exploration, combat, minigames, character interactions, and side content at a pace that can feel overwhelming. It is also the second part of a planned trilogy. Square Enix presents it as playable on its own, but familiarity with Final Fantasy VII Remake substantially improves the story context; newcomers can follow the broad plot, but they should not expect a cleanly self-contained narrative.
- Choose it if: you want the year’s biggest traditional single-player RPG and can make room for a substantial commitment.
- Watch out for: optional-content overload, PS5 exclusivity at the original release, and a story that assumes this is one chapter in a larger project.
- Try instead: Like a Dragon: Infinite Wealth if you want a similarly large RPG on PC, Xbox, or PS4.
2. Balatro — best replayable indie and short-session game
Released February 20, 2024, on PC, macOS, Switch, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series. Balatro turns poker hands into the foundation for a roguelike deckbuilder. The rules are easy to understand, but jokers, modifiers, deck construction, and escalating challenges produce remarkable strategic depth.
It is the best recommendation here for players who want something they can play for a few minutes or lose an entire evening to. GQ named it its number-one game of 2024 so far, and its broad platform availability makes it easier to recommend than most prestige releases. The trade-off is that it offers little conventional story or spectacle, and its escalating one-more-run structure can be unusually compulsive. That is not a moral judgment about the game; it is a practical warning for anyone trying to protect limited time.
- Choose it if: you enjoy roguelikes, card systems, optimization, or games that reward repeated experimentation.
- Watch out for: a loop that becomes strategically complex after an invitingly simple start, plus minimal narrative content.
- Try instead: Animal Well if you want an indie built around exploration rather than repeated runs.
3. Animal Well — best discovery-driven adventure
Released May 9, 2024, on PC, PS5, and Switch. Animal Well is a compact but unusually dense exploration game. Its world is built around observation, environmental puzzles, secrets, and tools whose uses are not always immediately apparent. Metacritic tied it with Balatro for second place at 90, but its appeal is very different: this is a game about noticing what the environment is quietly telling you.
Recommended Free Tools
The less you know about its deeper layers, the better. Conventional storytelling is limited, and the game intentionally withholds explanations. Some players will find that ambiguity exhilarating; others will want clearer objectives and more explicit progression. Its challenge is primarily discovery and experimentation rather than constant combat.
- Choose it if: you enjoy mapping spaces, testing strange interactions, and finding secrets without a guide.
- Watch out for: spoilers, opaque objectives, and later layers that can be difficult to appreciate if explained in advance.
- Try instead: Prince of Persia: The Lost Crown for a more explicit Metroidvania structure and more prominent action.
4. Lorelei and the Laser Eyes — best puzzle and mystery game
Released May 16, 2024, on PC and Switch. Lorelei and the Laser Eyes is a nonlinear mystery built from surreal imagery, layered clues, and demanding puzzles. It is one of the most distinctive games of the year for players who prefer investigation to combat and atmosphere to conventional exposition.
This is not a game to rush through while half-watching something else. It expects you to remember details, make connections, and sometimes maintain your own notes. The clues can feel frustrating rather than elegantly guided, but that friction is central to its identity. Explaining its solutions or more unusual turns would damage much of the experience, so this recommendation is intentionally spoiler-light.
- Choose it if: you want a strange, cerebral mystery that respects your ability to solve problems.
- Watch out for: ambiguity, limited hand-holding, and puzzles that may require stepping away and returning later.
- Try instead: Riven if you prefer a more traditional first-person puzzle adventure.
5. Tekken 8 — best fighting game
Released January 26, 2024, on PC, PS5, and Xbox Series X/S. Tekken 8 is the strongest fighting-game recommendation of the period. Its aggressive combat, large roster, presentation, and substantial story mode give newcomers something to do before they begin the much steeper climb toward online mastery.
That distinction matters. Tekken 8 is approachable at entry level, but competitive fighting games demand practice, matchup knowledge, and a tolerance for losing. It has a major online component, yet it is not only an online game: the story and training options make it a reasonable single-player purchase for someone who wants to learn at their own pace.
- Choose it if: you want a fighting game with a strong onboarding path and a serious competitive ceiling.
- Watch out for: the gap between understanding the basics and consistently winning online.
- Try instead: Helldivers 2 if your priority is cooperative rather than competitive multiplayer.
6. Like a Dragon: Infinite Wealth — best enormous character-driven RPG
Released January 26, 2024, on PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series. Like a Dragon: Infinite Wealth is a huge turn-based RPG that combines serious character drama with absurd side activities, comedy, and an unusually expansive setting. It is an excellent fit for someone who wants a long commitment with a lot of tonal variety.
New players can technically start here, but the emotional and historical context is much richer if you know Yakuza: Like a Dragon and the broader series. The central trade-off is not quality so much as scale and continuity: the game wants you to care about a large cast and a long-running story. It is the best multiplatform alternative to Final Fantasy VII Rebirth for a player who owns an Xbox, PS4, or gaming PC.
- Choose it if: you want a long RPG with turn-based battles, emotional drama, and eccentric optional content.
- Watch out for: continuity, tonal whiplash, and the time required to see its many systems through.
- Try instead: Persona 3 Reload for a more structured calendar and social-simulation focus.
7. Helldivers 2 — best co-op game
Released February 8, 2024, on PS5 and PC. Helldivers 2 is the essential multiplayer recommendation of the first half. Its shooting is immediately readable, its squad roles create reasons to cooperate, and its battlefield chaos produces stories that no scripted campaign could reliably reproduce.

8. 1000xRESIST — best narrative-focused game
Released May 9, 2024, on PC and Switch. 1000xRESIST is the overlooked narrative recommendation: ambitious science fiction told through exploration, dialogue, memory, identity, and political themes. It is more interested in ideas and emotional accumulation than in conventional action or elaborate combat systems.
That makes it an especially good choice for readers who feel that large RPGs spend too much time on spectacle and not enough on difficult subjects. Its themes include identity, memory, immigration, political power, grief, and the pressures placed on individuals by collective systems. Those themes are not decorative marketing language; they are central to the experience, so readers should approach it expecting emotionally heavy material.
It is a focused alternative to a 40-hour blockbuster, though it still asks for attention rather than casual background play. The game’s reception and growing visibility were also noted by its publisher and developer in a post-release update.
- Choose it if: you want speculative fiction with political and emotional ambition.
- Watch out for: dialogue-heavy pacing, exploration in place of action, and difficult themes involving identity, loss, and social control.
- Try instead: Indika for another confrontational narrative adventure, or Crow Country for a more game-driven retro-horror experience.
9. Unicorn Overlord — best tactical RPG
Released March 8, 2024, on Switch, PS4, PS5, and Xbox Series X/S. Unicorn Overlord combines army-building, formation design, overworld exploration, and real-time movement with battles whose outcomes depend heavily on how units are organized. Vanillaware’s visual style gives the strategy layer a distinctive presentation rather than making it look like a spreadsheet with character portraits.
The story is more traditional than the systems. That is a strength if you want a reliable fantasy campaign supporting deep tactical decisions, but a limitation if you are searching for the narrative experimentation found in 1000xRESIST or Lorelei. The game is best approached as a systems-first RPG: the pleasure comes from building formations, testing them, and adjusting them when the battlefield exposes a weakness.
- Choose it if: you enjoy optimizing squads, experimenting with unit composition, and exploring between battles.
- Watch out for: a conventional plot and a substantial strategic commitment.
- Try instead: Shin Megami Tensei V: Vengeance for a more combat-focused JRPG challenge.
10. Shin Megami Tensei V: Vengeance — best expanded edition
Released June 14, 2024, on Switch, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series, and PC. Shin Megami Tensei V: Vengeance is substantial enough to earn a place in the main recommendations, provided it is labeled honestly. It includes the original campaign alongside a new story route with additional characters, locations, and endings.
This is an expanded re-release, not a wholly new 2024 game. For anyone who has not played the original, however, Vengeance is the version to choose. Its demon negotiation, team-building, and weakness-based combat are strategically demanding, and it is notably harsher than Persona. The added route also gives the package more weight than an ordinary port or cosmetic remaster.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →- Choose it if: you want a challenging, systems-heavy JRPG and have not already completed the original SMT V.
- Watch out for: difficulty, a relatively austere presentation, and the fact that this is an expanded edition.
- Try instead: Persona 3 Reload for a more socially focused and generally more welcoming version of Atlus-style role-playing.
11. Persona 3 Reload — best social-simulation JRPG remake
Released February 2, 2024, on PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series, and PC. Persona 3 Reload modernizes the original game’s interface, presentation, combat flow, and social-simulation structure. It remains a calendar-driven RPG in which daily decisions, relationships, dungeon work, and battles compete for your limited time.
That structure is the central appeal and the central commitment. Players who want to settle into a long routine of planning evenings and balancing relationships may find it absorbing; those looking for a short, freely paced adventure may find it restrictive. It is accessible as a remake, but its older JRPG design still asks you to respect the calendar and accept that not every activity can fit into one playthrough.
- Choose it if: you want combat and character relationships to matter equally.
- Watch out for: length, calendar pressure, and the need to make deliberate choices about how each day is spent.
- Try instead: Balatro for flexible sessions or Like a Dragon: Infinite Wealth for a more freely structured long RPG.
12. Dragon’s Dogma 2 — best emergent fantasy adventure
Released March 22, 2024, on PC, PS5, and Xbox Series X/S. Dragon’s Dogma 2 is at its best when its systems collide in unpredictable ways: unusual combat encounters, dangerous travel, party interactions, and improvised solutions that feel discovered rather than delivered by a quest designer.
It is not the most controlled open-world blockbuster. Friction, strange design decisions, uneven onboarding, and a willingness to let the player get confused are part of the package. That makes it a strong recommendation for experienced players who enjoy experimentation, but a less reliable first open-world RPG. Metacritic characterized it as an improvement over the original while noting that its design may not be ideal for novices.
- Choose it if: you want an unpredictable fantasy journey where systems matter as much as the main plot.
- Watch out for: friction, limited hand-holding, and an open world that does not always behave like a polished theme park.
- Try instead: Final Fantasy VII Rebirth for a more directed and conventionally produced RPG.
13. Stellar Blade — best conventional action-adventure
Released April 26, 2024, exclusively on PS5 at launch. Stellar Blade delivers fast action combat, spectacle, and a polished console presentation. It is the straightforward pick for players who want a dedicated action game rather than a sprawling RPG or a deliberately obscure indie.
The recommendation comes with clear caveats. The story is less consistent than the combat, the original release was PS5-only, and the game’s sexualized character design will not suit every player. Those are not reasons to conceal it or dismiss it; they are reasons to make the audience fit explicit.

- Watch out for: demanding encounters, uneven storytelling, and a character presentation some players will find off-putting.
- Try instead: Prince of Persia: The Lost Crown for a more accessible 2D action game, or Dragon’s Dogma 2 for emergent 3D combat.
14. Prince of Persia: The Lost Crown — best 2D action-platformer
Released January 18, 2024, on PC, Switch, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series. Prince of Persia: The Lost Crown is the most dependable recommendation for players who want tight movement, action-platforming, and Metroidvania-style exploration without committing to a massive RPG. Metacritic placed it 14th in its midyear ranking with an 86.
It is less experimental than Animal Well and less punishingly mysterious than Lorelei, which is precisely why it works as an alternative. Progression is easier to understand, the action is more explicit, and the broad platform availability makes it a useful choice for readers who lack a current PlayStation or gaming PC.

- Watch out for: a more familiar genre structure than the year’s strangest indies.

15. Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door — best remake for a broad audience
Released May 23, 2024, on Switch. Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door is a substantial visual and quality-of-life remake of the 2004 GameCube RPG, not an entirely new 2024 design. It remains one of the easiest games on this list to recommend broadly: its turn-based combat is approachable, its humor is inviting, and its adventure structure is easier to absorb than the calendar systems or sprawling worlds of the larger RPGs.
The qualification is important. The remake preserves much of the older game’s structure and writing, so players looking for a modern reinvention may find it conservative. For everyone else, it is a polished way to experience one of Nintendo’s most beloved role-playing games without needing the original hardware.
- Choose it if: you want a charming, approachable RPG with light tactical combat and a strong sense of humor.
- Watch out for: the Switch-only platform and the fact that this is a remake rather than a new adventure.
- Try instead: Persona 3 Reload for a much more extensively rebuilt RPG with a darker, calendar-based structure.

Choose according to your time and tolerance
For short or flexible sessions
Start with Balatro, Tekken 8, or Animal Well. Balatro is the clearest pick for genuinely small sessions. Tekken 8 lets you practice or play a match without starting a campaign, while Animal Well supports brief bursts of exploration even though its deeper secrets invite a longer commitment.
For a focused narrative
Indika, Crow Country, and Still Wakes the Deep are better choices than the enormous RPGs if you want a concentrated story or atmospheric experience. 1000xRESIST is the more ambitious narrative recommendation, but it is dialogue- and exploration-led rather than a conventional action campaign.

For a long commitment
Choose Final Fantasy VII Rebirth, Like a Dragon: Infinite Wealth, Persona 3 Reload, or Dragon’s Dogma 2. The first three are especially suitable if you want to settle into a large RPG routine. Dragon’s Dogma 2 is the better fit if you want an open-ended adventure whose memorable moments come from systems colliding rather than from a perfectly controlled plot.
For difficulty without a simple easy-or-hard label
- Shin Megami Tensei V: Vengeance is strategically demanding and less forgiving than Persona.
- Lorelei and the Laser Eyes is cognitively demanding: the challenge is interpreting clues, not winning fights.
- Animal Well expects experimentation and conceals much of its depth behind secrets.
- Balatro is easy to start but becomes strategically dense as its systems interact.
- Tekken 8 is welcoming at the entry level but has a very high competitive ceiling.
- Stellar Blade and Dragon’s Dogma 2 both ask players to pay attention to their combat systems, although they do so in very different ways.
Remakes, expansions, and Early Access: the important exceptions
Expansions worth playing, but not mixed into the main ranking
Elden Ring: Shadow of the Erdtree may be the single most celebrated release of the period for players who already own and enjoy Elden Ring. It is still an expansion, not a standalone game, so ranking it directly beside Balatro or Rebirth would blur two different kinds of release. The Metacritic methodology excluded expansions, while the Washington Post’s midyear coverage treated it as a major release.
The same rule applies to Destiny 2: The Final Shape, officially designated an expansion in Bungie’s release information, and Alan Wake 2: Night Springs. Both are worth acknowledging for returning players, but neither belongs in a clean list of new standalone games.
Hades II was exciting, but unfinished
Hades II entered Early Access on May 6, 2024. Supergiant said at launch that the game would continue to grow, and its true ending was not available at that stage. It was already one of the most promising games of the year, but the fair recommendation is: play it in Early Access if you are comfortable with changing content, balance, and structure; wait if you want a finished campaign. It should not be treated as a completed release in this ranking.
Manor Lords and No Rest for the Wicked belong in the same separate conversation: notable unfinished releases whose current strengths and weaknesses may change substantially before completion.
Why other 2024 remasters are not ranked as new games
Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door qualifies here because it is a substantial remake with a modernized presentation and quality-of-life improvements. Persona 3 Reload significantly rebuilds its original presentation and systems, while Shin Megami Tensei V: Vengeance adds an entire campaign route and considerable content.
By contrast, The Last of Us Part II Remastered is treated as a remaster rather than a new 2024 game in this article’s main competition. That does not make it irrelevant; it simply keeps ordinary re-releases from competing directly with original releases and substantial remakes.

PlayStation 5
PS5 owners have the strongest access to the core list, including Final Fantasy VII Rebirth, Stellar Blade, Animal Well, Tekken 8, Dragon’s Dogma 2, Like a Dragon: Infinite Wealth, Persona 3 Reload, Unicorn Overlord, Shin Megami Tensei V: Vengeance, Prince of Persia: The Lost Crown, and Helldivers 2. Rebirth and Stellar Blade were PS5-only at their original release, so they are not alternatives for Xbox or Switch players.

Xbox
Xbox players should begin with Persona 3 Reload, Shin Megami Tensei V: Vengeance, Like a Dragon: Infinite Wealth, Tekken 8, Dragon’s Dogma 2, Unicorn Overlord, or Prince of Persia: The Lost Crown. Helldivers 2, Final Fantasy VII Rebirth, Stellar Blade, Animal Well, Lorelei and the Laser Eyes, and Paper Mario were not Xbox options in this release window.
Nintendo Switch
Switch has an unusually strong selection of smaller and strategy-focused games: Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door, Unicorn Overlord, Animal Well, Lorelei and the Laser Eyes, 1000xRESIST, Balatro, and Prince of Persia: The Lost Crown. Switch is the best home for readers who want portability, puzzle-solving, tactical systems, or short sessions rather than the year’s largest technical showcases.
PC
PC players can choose from Balatro, Animal Well, Tekken 8, Like a Dragon: Infinite Wealth, Helldivers 2, 1000xRESIST, Shin Megami Tensei V: Vengeance, Persona 3 Reload, Dragon’s Dogma 2, Prince of Persia: The Lost Crown, and Lorelei and the Laser Eyes. Balatro also supports macOS. The main platform-specific omissions are Rebirth, Stellar Blade, Paper Mario, and Unicorn Overlord.
A niche handheld option
For Playdate owners, Mars After Midnight is a notable dedicated-handheld recommendation. It is not a direct substitute for the major multiplatform games above, but it belongs in a serious 2024 roundup because the platform’s constraints produce a different kind of short-session experience.

- Riven: a high-quality 3D remake for traditional puzzle-adventure fans.
- Solium Infernum: a strategic option for players who want political maneuvering and complex systems.
Several of these less prominent releases appeared in Metacritic’s midyear coverage, including Minishoot’ Adventures, Mullet MadJack, Riven, and Shiren the Wanderer. That is a useful reminder that professional consensus and mainstream visibility are not the same thing.
What the later 2024 conversation adds
A first-half list should not pretend to be a complete account of the year. Astro Bot launched on September 6, 2024, and Metaphor: ReFantazio followed on October 11, so both fall outside this article’s cutoff. The 2024 awards tracker and official Game Awards rewind provide the later-year context, including continued recognition for games such as Balatro, 1000xRESIST, Helldivers 2, Final Fantasy VII Rebirth, and Shadow of the Erdtree.
That later recognition does not change the practical advice here. The right game still depends on whether you want a 100-hour RPG, a 30-minute run, a cooperative squad, a difficult puzzle, or a story that takes risks outside familiar blockbuster formulas.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is this a strict ranking from one to fifteen?
No. It is a consensus-based shortlist organized around player fit. Metacritic’s June 26, 2024 snapshot is useful context, but review averages cannot determine the best short-session game, co-op game, puzzle game, or niche recommendation for every reader.
Do I need to play Final Fantasy VII Remake before Rebirth?
It is not a technical requirement: the official PlayStation description presents Rebirth as playable by newcomers. However, Rebirth is the second part of a planned trilogy, and playing Final Fantasy VII Remake first will provide substantially better story context.
What is the best choice if I do not own a PS5?
Xbox players should start with Like a Dragon: Infinite Wealth, Persona 3 Reload, Shin Megami Tensei V: Vengeance, Tekken 8, Dragon’s Dogma 2, or Unicorn Overlord. PC players have all of those except Unicorn Overlord, plus Balatro, Animal Well, Helldivers 2, 1000xRESIST, Lorelei and the Laser Eyes, and Prince of Persia: The Lost Crown. Switch players should look first at Balatro, Animal Well, Paper Mario, Lorelei, 1000xRESIST, and Unicorn Overlord.
Why is Shadow of the Erdtree not in the main list?
Shadow of the Erdtree is a major 2024 release and an excellent recommendation for Elden Ring players, but it is an expansion rather than a standalone game. Keeping it separate prevents a large expansion from being compared directly with new games.
Should I play Hades II now or wait?
Hades II entered Early Access on May 6, 2024, and its true ending was not available at launch. Play it now if you are comfortable with changing content and balance; wait if you want a finished campaign and final structure.
The Bottom Line
The first half of 2024 rewarded almost every kind of player. Final Fantasy VII Rebirth is the grand RPG, Balatro the endlessly replayable system game, Animal Well the secret-filled discovery adventure, Lorelei and the Laser Eyes the demanding puzzle mystery, and Helldivers 2 the best reason to assemble a group. Start with the recommendation that matches your time, platform, and preferred kind of challenge—not simply the game with the highest aggregate score.
