For the 2023 VR market, Meta Quest 2 was the best headset for most people, PlayStation VR2 was the best console option, and Valve Index was the strongest premium PC VR choice for tracking and controllers. Meta Quest 3 became the more compelling late-2023 upgrade for buyers willing to pay more.

Important: This is a historical 2023 buying guide. Hardware, prices, availability and software support have changed since then; do not treat its rankings or prices as current 2026 shopping advice.

Which kind of VR headset should you buy?

Start with the hardware you already own:

  • No gaming PC or PS5: choose a standalone headset such as Quest 2 or, late in 2023, Quest 3.
  • A PS5 and interest in PlayStation exclusives: choose PS VR2.
  • A powerful gaming PC and a priority on tracking: consider Valve Index or another dedicated PC headset.
  • Wireless PC VR and better optics: consider Pico 4 where it was officially sold and supported, or Quest 3.

Standalone headsets run games without another device, but many can also stream PC VR over USB or Wi-Fi. That does not produce exactly the same experience as a native DisplayPort headset: streaming can introduce compression, latency and dependence on your network.

Best overall in 2023: Meta Quest 2

Meta Quest 2 was the easiest recommendation for most buyers in 2023. It worked independently, had a large Quest software library, used inside-out tracking rather than external base stations, and could connect to a PC for PC VR. That combination made it accessible to people who did not already own expensive gaming hardware.

Inside-out tracking uses cameras on the headset to track the room and controllers. It is far simpler to install than a lighthouse system: you define a play area, put on the headset and start playing. Quest 2 also supported seated and standing experiences, making it suitable for fitness, casual games and room-scale VR.

Its compromises were equally important. The headset used older hardware and Fresnel lenses, whose clearest area is more sensitive to eye position than the wider clear view offered by pancake optics. Its stock strap was not ideal for everyone, and standalone graphics were below what a capable gaming PC could render. Buyers also had to accept Meta’s account, software and ecosystem policies.

Choose Quest 2 if price and convenience matter most, you mainly want the established Quest library, or you expect to upgrade later. It was not the best choice for buyers who prioritised the sharpest text, the newest mixed-reality features or maximum future-proofing.

Best late-2023 upgrade: Meta Quest 3

Meta announced Quest 3 in September 2023 with a starting price of $499.99. It added a newer platform, pancake lenses, stronger mixed-reality hardware and a higher-resolution display system; Meta described the resolution improvement over Quest 2 as roughly 30%. See Meta’s Quest 3 announcement.

Quest 3 made more sense than Quest 2 when sharper edge-to-edge clarity, newer standalone games and colour passthrough justified the price difference. Pancake lenses generally make it easier to look around with your eyes rather than constantly repositioning the headset.

Rank #2
Meta Quest 3 512GB, VR Without Wires, Gorilla Tag Cardboard Monkenaut Bundle, Amazon Exclusive, 3-Month Trial of Meta Horizon+ Included
  • CARDBOARD MONKENAUT — Get our best Gorilla Tag bundle yet with this Amazon exclusive deal. Purchase Meta Quest 3 to get exclusive items, including the Gorilla Space Program Suit and Helmet, plus 2,000 SHINY ROCKS.
  • NEARLY 30% LEAP IN RESOLUTION — Experience every thrill in breathtaking detail with sharp graphics and stunning 4K+ Infinite Display.
  • NO WIRES, MORE FUN — Break free from cords. Game, play and explore in immersive worlds — untethered and without limits.
  • 2X GRAPHICAL PROCESSING POWER — Enjoy lightning-fast load times and next-gen graphics for smooth gaming powered by the Snapdragon XR2 Gen 2 processor.
  • EXPERIENCE VIRTUAL REALITY — Blend virtual objects with your physical space and experience two worlds at once in your VR headset.

Quest 2 remained the value option when discounted, especially for casual use and existing Quest software. The correct late-2023 decision was therefore not simply “newer is better”: it was whether improved optics, performance and mixed reality were worth the premium.

Best console VR: PlayStation VR2

PlayStation VR2 was the best dedicated console VR headset for PS5 owners. It launched on February 22, 2023, and required a PS5 for its native console experience. It was not compatible with PS4, and original PSVR games were not automatically PS VR2 games. Sony’s compatibility documentation explains those platform boundaries.

PS VR2 combined an OLED display with HDR, eye tracking, eye-tracked rendering, headset rumble and adaptive controller triggers. Its inside-out tracking avoided external cameras or base stations, while the console handled installation and performance more predictably than a PC.

The trade-offs were a wired connection, no standalone mode and dependence on PlayStation’s software library. If you did not already own a PS5, the real entry cost included both the console and headset. A PS5 Digital Edition still supported PS VR2; the presence or absence of a disc drive was irrelevant.

PS VR2 and PC: a later development

Native PC support was not part of PS VR2’s original 2023 launch proposition. Sony later added PC use through a PS VR2 PC adapter, a DisplayPort 1.4 cable, Steam, SteamVR, the PlayStation VR2 app and a compatible PC. Sony warns that some PS VR2 features are unavailable on PC, that the adapter should connect directly to the computer rather than through a hub, and that Bluetooth-adapter compatibility can vary. See the official PS VR2 PC support page.

Best premium PC VR choice in 2023: Valve Index

Valve Index was best understood as a tracking-and-controller choice, not an automatic winner for every PC gamer. It required a SteamVR-compatible gaming PC and external base stations, but delivered highly accurate room-scale tracking, Index controllers with individual finger sensing, high refresh-rate support, strong audio and excellent SteamVR integration.

That hardware made Index particularly attractive for enthusiasts, simulation players and users who valued controller interaction. Its setup was more involved than Quest’s: base stations needed suitable placement, the play area needed preparation, and the complete system cost more than a standalone headset.

Index also showed its age in 2023. Its display resolution and Fresnel optics were behind newer designs, and it remained tethered to the PC. A newer standalone headset could provide better convenience and optics while still accessing PC VR through streaming. Valve maintains an official Index product page, but prices and availability should be checked rather than inferred from historical listings.

Best Quest 2 alternative: Pico 4

Pico 4 was often the better hardware design for buyers in markets where it was officially available. Its pancake lenses, higher per-eye resolution and rear-mounted battery produced a sharper and more balanced headset than Quest 2. It supported standalone use and PC VR.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

However, “better” depends on the criteria. Meta had the larger and more established standalone software ecosystem, while Pico’s official availability, warranty, software selection and regional support varied significantly. US buyers in particular should confirm that Pico 4 is officially sold and supported in their market before choosing it.

Pico 4 was therefore a strong optics-and-ergonomics recommendation for supported regions, but not a universal replacement for Quest 2.

Premium and specialist alternatives

Meta Quest Pro

Quest Pro was a specialist premium headset rather than the default gaming recommendation. Its stronger optics, colour passthrough, eye tracking and face tracking suited mixed-reality work, social VR and professional use. Those features were difficult to justify for a buyer who mainly wanted games, particularly because the headset still used standalone mobile-class processing and cost substantially more than Quest 2.

Rank #4
Meta Quest 3S 128GB | Virtual Reality — VR Headset (Renewed Premium)
  • NO WIRES, MORE FUN — Break free from cords. Game, play, exercise and explore immersive worlds — untethered and without limits.
  • 2X GRAPHICAL PROCESSING POWER — Enjoy lightning-fast load times and next-gen graphics for smooth gaming powered by the SnapdragonTM XR2 Gen 2 processor.
  • EXPERIENCE VIRTUAL REALITY — Take gaming to a new level and blend virtual objects with your physical space to experience two worlds at once.
  • 2+ HOURS OF BATTERY LIFE — Charge less, play longer and stay in the action with an improved battery that keeps up.
  • 33% MORE MEMORY — Elevate your play with 8GB of RAM. Upgraded memory delivers a next-level experience fueled by sharper graphics and more responsive performance.

HTC Vive Pro 2

Vive Pro 2 offered high-resolution PC VR, but required a powerful computer and base-station tracking. Its price and installation complexity made it more appropriate for enthusiasts, simulation users, enterprise deployments or existing Vive owners than mainstream first-time buyers.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

HTC Vive Cosmos

Vive Cosmos was a modular, PC-focused option, but its appeal depended on its accessories, price and the buyer’s existing HTC equipment. New buyers generally had simpler alternatives in the standalone-plus-PC category.

HP Reverb G2

Reverb G2 was a specialist PC headset that appealed to flight and racing simulation users because of its visual quality. It did not offer standalone use, and its Windows Mixed Reality-era software and hardware support required careful verification. It should not be recommended as an unqualified current Windows headset without checking support for the publication date.

What matters more than the specification sheet?

Optics and perceived clarity

Resolution is not the same as perceived sharpness. Lens design, rendered resolution, eye position, IPD adjustment and the size of the clear “sweet spot” all affect how easy it is to read text or look around naturally. Pancake lenses generally offer clearer viewing across more of the lens, while Fresnel lenses can require more precise positioning.

Tracking

Inside-out tracking is easier to install and transport. External base stations can provide excellent room-scale accuracy and accessory support, but add cost and equipment. Headset-camera tracking can struggle when controllers are hidden behind your body or outside the cameras’ view. Low light, reflective surfaces and clutter can also cause problems.

Comfort and fit

A lighter or better-balanced headset can be more enjoyable than a higher-spec model that causes face pressure. Check the stock strap, facial interface, eyeglass clearance, IPD adjustment, ventilation and heat. Rear-mounted batteries can improve balance, while front-heavy designs may become tiring during longer sessions. A replacement comfort strap may be useful, but it should be treated as part of the total cost rather than an assumed necessity.

Software ecosystem

Quest, SteamVR, PlayStation and Pico do not offer identical libraries. Check exclusives, cross-buy rules, regional restrictions and whether a game runs natively or requires a PC. “Works with PC VR” can mean USB streaming, Wi-Fi streaming or a native wired connection, each with different latency and image-quality trade-offs.

Total cost: what you may need beyond the headset

  • Standalone VR: headset, optional comfort or battery strap, prescription inserts, case and games.
  • Wireless PC VR: a capable gaming PC, suitable Wi-Fi, and sometimes a better router or wired network connection.
  • USB PC VR: a genuine high-bandwidth USB cable; a cable advertised only for charging may not work reliably for data.
  • Console VR: PS5, PS VR2, games and any required accessories if you do not already own the console.
  • Base-station PC VR: gaming PC, headset, controllers, base stations, mounting space and replacement cables or parts.

A nominally compatible PC may still struggle at a headset’s native resolution. On laptops, verify that the DisplayPort or USB-C connection is routed to the discrete GPU. For wireless VR, router placement, congestion and 5GHz or 6GHz conditions can affect latency and compression.

Common mistakes and troubleshooting

PC VR connection problems

  • Confirm the laptop’s video output is connected to the discrete GPU.
  • Use a data-capable USB cable rather than a charge-only cable.
  • For wireless VR, place the router close to the play area and reduce competing traffic where possible.
  • Move base stations to positions with a clear view of the room and avoid occlusion.
  • Reduce rendering resolution or refresh rate if the PC cannot maintain a stable frame rate.

Console compatibility mistakes

  • PS VR2 does not work with PS4.
  • Original PSVR games are not automatically PS VR2 games.
  • PS VR2’s later PC support does not make it standalone.
  • PC use requires the adapter, DisplayPort connection, software and compatible hardware.

Buying used

Inspect lenses for scratches, displays for dead pixels or mura, controllers for stick drift, the battery’s condition, the facial interface, included cables and adapters, and base stations for damage. Check account or region restrictions and whether replacement parts remain available.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Motion sickness and safety

No headset eliminates motion sickness. Begin with seated or stationary experiences, use teleport movement and snap turning, keep sessions short, improve airflow and stop as soon as symptoms begin. Unstable frame rates and poor wireless streaming can make discomfort worse.

Clear the floor, set up the guardian or play-area boundary, manage cables and supervise children. Ensure the headset fits correctly, and check the manufacturer’s current age recommendations and account rules before allowing a child to use it.

2026 context: why these rankings are historical

Meta introduced Quest 3S in 2024 with a $299.99 starting-price signal. It uses the Quest 3 family’s newer performance and mixed-reality platform while making optical and display compromises to reduce cost. Meta positioned Quest 3 as the sharper, more advanced option with pancake optics and greater storage. See Meta’s Quest 3S announcement.

Accordingly, a current buyer in 2026 should compare the Quest 3S and Quest 3 with available PS VR2, PC VR and regional alternatives rather than assuming Quest 2 is still the default entry-level choice. Current checkout prices, stock, warranties and game support must be verified at the time of purchase.
