Will a Gen 3 SSD Work on PS5? PCIe vs USB Explained

Usually, no—as an internal expansion drive. The PS5’s M.2 slot is designed for an M.2 NVMe SSD using PCIe Gen4 x4, with Sony recommending sequential read speeds of at least 5,500 MB/s. A PCIe Gen 3 M.2 SSD is outside that supported specification, even if its shape and connector appear to fit.

However, a “Gen 3” external USB SSD is different. It can work as USB extended storage, but PS5 games must be moved to the console’s internal storage or a compatible internal M.2 SSD before they can be played.

First, identify what “Gen 3 SSD” means

The term can refer to two unrelated types of storage:

Drive type PS5 result
PCIe Gen 3/NVMe M.2 SSD Not an officially supported choice for the internal M.2 expansion slot.
USB 3.x external SSD Supported for extended storage, PS4 games and storing or transferring PS5 games.
M.2 SATA SSD Not supported in the PS5 expansion slot.

“M.2” describes a physical form factor, not the storage protocol. An M.2 SATA drive is not interchangeable with an M.2 NVMe PCIe drive, and USB 3.x is not the same thing as PCIe Gen 3.

Why a PCIe Gen 3 M.2 SSD is the wrong choice

Sony’s hardware documentation specifies an M.2 NVMe SSD supporting PCI-Express Gen4x4 with a Key M connector. Sony’s installation guidance also recommends sequential read performance of 5,500 MB/s or faster. See Sony’s PS5 M.2 SSD installation guidance and hardware safety guide.

Most PCIe Gen 3 x4 SSDs are substantially slower than that target. More importantly, Gen 3 does not meet Sony’s stated Gen4x4 interface specification. A drive might physically fit—and a particular unsupported model might even be detected—but that does not make it a supported or dependable PS5 expansion drive. Sony also says it cannot guarantee every third-party SSD, including products that appear to meet its published requirements.

So the practical answer is simple: do not install or buy a PCIe Gen 3 M.2 SSD for the PS5’s internal expansion bay.

PS5 internal M.2 SSD requirements

Choose a drive that meets all of these conditions, not just one or two:

Requirement Specification or guidance
Interface PCIe Gen4 x4-compatible M.2 NVMe
Connector Key M, Socket 3
Capacity 250 GB to 8 TB under current software support
Sequential read speed 5,500 MB/s or faster recommended
Supported lengths 30, 42, 60, 80 or 110 mm
Common size M.2 2280
Maximum width 25 mm, including the heatsink
Maximum thickness 11.25 mm total, with Sony’s limits above and below the drive board
Cooling Effective heat dissipation, normally through a compatible heatsink and thermal pad
Unsupported type M.2 SATA

Both single-sided and double-sided drives can be used when the complete assembly fits the dimensional limits. Sony increased the supported capacity from 4 TB to 8 TB in a September 2023 system software update. Some older regional documentation still lists 4 TB, so check the current support information for your console and region.

What happens if you try a Gen 3 drive?

There is no safe universal prediction for every PCIe Gen 3 model. Detection can depend on the drive’s controller, firmware and how it presents itself to the console. But the important point is that Gen 3 remains outside Sony’s supported selection criteria.

  • DO MORE WITH DASHBOARD. Ensure your drive is optimized for prime performance with the downloadable WD_BLACK Dashboard (Windows only).

A drive can also fail for reasons unrelated to its generation:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • It is M.2 SATA rather than NVMe.
  • The Key M connector or physical length is wrong.
  • The heatsink makes the assembly too thick or wide.
  • The drive is not fully inserted or secured.
  • The PS5 system software is outdated.
  • The drive overheats because it lacks suitable heat dissipation.

Do not treat successful detection as proof that the drive will deliver reliable performance. Likewise, 5,500 MB/s is a recommendation rather than a guaranteed universal rejection threshold; it is still the sensible minimum when selecting a supported drive.

Can an external USB Gen 3 SSD run PS5 games?

Yes, but only in a limited sense. A USB 3.x external SSD can be used as USB extended storage to:

What to buy instead

For internal expansion, look for a reputable PCIe Gen4 x4 NVMe M.2 SSD rated at 5,500 MB/s or faster, with a heatsink that remains within Sony’s limits. Confirm the complete dimensions—not merely the bare SSD’s specifications—and check the manufacturer’s warranty, firmware support and return policy.

An officially licensed PS5 drive can simplify heatsink and compatibility decisions, but the logo is not the only route to a suitable upgrade. Standard retail Gen4 drives can also work when their interface, speed, capacity, dimensions and cooling comply with Sony’s requirements. Examples of PS5-oriented options include the WD_BLACK SN850P and Seagate Game Drive PS5 NVMe SSD.

A Gen 5 SSD should not be assumed to be compatible simply because it is newer. Sony specifies Gen4x4, and a Gen 5 drive still needs appropriate compatibility, physical fit, firmware behavior and cooling. Paying for Gen 5 speed is generally unnecessary for a PS5 upgrade.

How to install a compatible M.2 SSD

  1. Update the PS5 system software.
  2. Fully shut down the console—not Rest Mode—and disconnect its cables.
  3. Place the console as shown in Sony’s installation instructions, then remove the outer cover and expansion-slot cover.
  4. Remove the M.2 screw and spacer, positioning the spacer for the drive’s length.
  5. Insert the SSD into the Key M slot at an angle, press it down and secure it with the screw.
  6. Replace the expansion-slot cover and outer console cover.
  7. Reconnect the cables and power on the console.
  8. When prompted, choose the option to format the M.2 SSD and wait for the console’s speed test to finish.

Formatting erases the newly installed drive. Once accepted, the M.2 SSD can store and launch PS5 and PS4 games and store media applications, as described in Sony’s M.2 storage announcement.

If the PS5 rejects the drive

  1. Verify that it is PCIe Gen4 x4 NVMe, not PCIe Gen 3 or M.2 SATA.
  2. Confirm that it is fully inserted and secured.
  3. Check the heatsink and thermal pad installation.
  4. Measure the complete drive-and-heatsink assembly against Sony’s limits.
  5. Update the PS5 and retry the installation and format process.
  6. If it still fails, check the drive specifications with its manufacturer or contact PlayStation Support rather than relying on unofficial workarounds.

Even a compliant drive is not guaranteed by Sony in every case, so buying from a manufacturer with a clear return policy is worthwhile.

Does a faster SSD match the PS5’s built-in storage?

No. Meeting or exceeding 5,500 MB/s makes a drive a better candidate, but it does not guarantee identical performance in every game. Sony warns that games may not perform exactly the same from an installed M.2 SSD as they do from the console’s internal Ultra-High Speed SSD.
