The Best VR Headsets for 2024: Quest 3, PS VR2, and More

Meta Quest 3 was the best all-around VR headset for most people in 2024, but Quest 3S, PS VR2, Apple Vision Pro, Valve Index, and VIVE XR Elite each made more sense for specific buyers.

For most buyers, the Meta Quest 3 was the best VR headset of 2024. It combined standalone gaming, mixed reality, optional PC VR, and better pancake optics without requiring a PS5 or gaming computer. The Meta Quest 3S was the better budget buy, the PlayStation VR2 was the obvious choice for PS5 owners, and the Apple Vision Pro belonged in a separate premium spatial-computing category rather than a conventional gaming-headset ranking.

This guide preserves 2024 U.S. pricing and availability context. It is a historical buying guide, not a claim about current 2026 prices or stock.

There was no single VR headset that was best for everyone in 2024. The right choice depended first on the hardware you already owned, then on whether you wanted standalone convenience, console gaming, PC VR, or premium productivity and media features.

A November 2024 roundup from WIRED reached a similar division: Meta Quest 3 for most people, Quest 3S as the budget option, and PlayStation VR2 for console gaming. That is a more useful way to approach VR than simply comparing display resolution.

  • 2+ HOURS OF BATTERY LIFE — Charge less, play longer and stay in the action with an improved battery that keeps up. *Based on the graphic performance of the Qualcomm Snapdragon XR2 Gen 2 platform vs the Meta Quest 2 platform.

How to choose a VR headset

  1. Start with your platform. Quest 3 and Quest 3S do not need a console or PC. PlayStation VR2 is primarily a PS5 accessory. Valve Index needs a capable gaming PC. Apple Vision Pro is designed around visionOS and Apple devices rather than a traditional console library.
  2. Decide whether you want wireless standalone VR. A standalone headset is easier to set up and can be used in more places. PC-tethered headsets can offer access to PC-focused software, but require a suitable computer, cables, and more setup.
  3. Separate optics from resolution. Quest 3’s pancake lenses and Quest 3S’s Fresnel lenses are a major distinction. A headset can have an appealing specification sheet but still be the wrong choice if you spend much of your time reading text or looking away from the center of the lens.
  4. Budget for ownership, not only the headset. Battery life, the default head strap, facial-interface fit, charging, storage, and prescription-lens needs can affect the experience. These are personal-fit considerations, not universal defects or guaranteed comfort results.

1. Meta Quest 3: best VR headset overall for most people

Buy the Meta Quest 3 if you want the fewest compromises across standalone gaming, mixed reality, fitness, social VR, and occasional PC VR.

Meta Quest 3 was the broadest recommendation in 2024 because it worked without additional hardware while still offering optional PC VR streaming. That made it suitable for a first-time buyer who wanted to explore several parts of VR instead of committing to one platform.

Meta introduced it at $499.99 for 128GB and $649.99 for 512GB in the United States. The headset used Qualcomm’s Snapdragon XR2 Gen 2 platform and improved on the previous generation’s mixed-reality passthrough capabilities. Its published display specification was 2064 by 2208 pixels per eye, and it used pancake lenses.

The combination matters. Quest 3 was not merely a faster version of an older standalone headset: its mixed-reality features made it possible to blend virtual content with a view of the surrounding room, while pancake optics generally provided a larger area of useful visual clarity than older Fresnel designs. The practical value of that clarity was especially relevant for menus, text, productivity-style interfaces, and games that required looking around without constantly repositioning the headset.

Its other advantage was flexibility. You could use it for native Quest games, exercise applications, social experiences, and mixed-reality software, then connect it to a gaming PC when you wanted access to PC VR. That does not turn it into a wired PC-only headset; it remains a standalone device first.

What to consider before buying Quest 3

  • Battery life is part of the ownership experience. As with other compact standalone headsets, plan around charging and play-session limits rather than assuming unlimited use.
  • The standard strap and facial interface may not suit everyone. Fit is personal. An optional strap or interface can be useful, but neither should be treated as mandatory for every buyer.
  • Storage matters. The 512GB version was aimed at buyers who expected to keep a large installed library or share the headset among several users. The 128GB version had the lower entry price.
  • PC VR still depends on the PC. Quest 3’s optional PC capability does not remove the need for a sufficiently powerful computer or a suitable connection.

For a general buyer, the Meta Quest 3 VR headset was the safest 2024 recommendation: no console requirement, no gaming PC requirement, a broad standalone software ecosystem, mixed reality, and a meaningful optical improvement over the Quest 3S.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

2. Meta Quest 3S: best budget VR headset

Choose the Meta Quest 3S if the lowest-cost entry into current Quest VR matters more than optical clarity.

Meta announced Quest 3S on September 25, 2024, and made it available on October 15. The 128GB model launched at $299.99 in the United States, placing current-generation Quest performance and mixed-reality features within reach of more first-time buyers.

Quest 3S shared the core Quest platform’s software ecosystem and fast performance, but it retained the older optical design. Published specifications list 1832 by 1920 pixels per eye and Fresnel lenses, compared with Quest 3’s 2064 by 2208 pixels per eye and pancake lenses.

Rank #2
Meta Quest 3S 128GB | Virtual Reality — VR Headset (Renewed Premium)
  • NO WIRES, MORE FUN — Break free from cords. Game, play, exercise and explore immersive worlds — untethered and without limits.
  • 2X GRAPHICAL PROCESSING POWER — Enjoy lightning-fast load times and next-gen graphics for smooth gaming powered by the SnapdragonTM XR2 Gen 2 processor.
  • EXPERIENCE VIRTUAL REALITY — Take gaming to a new level and blend virtual objects with your physical space to experience two worlds at once.
  • 2+ HOURS OF BATTERY LIFE — Charge less, play longer and stay in the action with an improved battery that keeps up.
  • 33% MORE MEMORY — Elevate your play with 8GB of RAM. Upgraded memory delivers a next-level experience fueled by sharper graphics and more responsive performance.

That distinction is the main reason to spend more on Quest 3. Quest 3S was not simply a cheaper headset with the same viewing experience. Fresnel lenses can be more dependent on finding the right position, and the lower resolution and older lens design made Quest 3S less attractive for buyers who expected to read a lot of text, use virtual screens, or keep the headset for several years.

For games, fitness, social VR, and a first experiment with mixed reality, the 3S remained a strong value choice. It also made sense for families or households that wanted to test whether VR would become a regular hobby before spending Quest 3 money.

The Meta Quest 3S VR headset was therefore the budget recommendation, not the overall winner. Buy it when price is the deciding factor; move up to Quest 3 when lens clarity, long-term ownership, or frequent in-headset reading matters more.

3. PlayStation VR2: best VR headset for PS5 owners

Choose PlayStation VR2 if you already own a PS5 and want console-first VR with OLED displays, eye tracking, and PlayStation-specific features.

PlayStation VR2 launched at a U.S. recommended retail price of $549.99, including the headset and PS VR2 Sense controllers. Unlike Quest 3 and Quest 3S, it was not a standalone headset: its primary console experience required a PS5, and the headset connected to the console by USB-C.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Sony’s specifications included OLED displays with 2000 by 2040 pixels per eye, 90Hz and 120Hz refresh-rate support, an approximately 110-degree field of view, four embedded tracking cameras, eye tracking, headset vibration, and inside-out tracking.

Those features gave PS VR2 a distinct reason to exist beside the Quest line. OLED technology offered the high-contrast presentation many console players value, while eye tracking enabled features such as eye-tracked foveated rendering in supported software. Headset vibration, adaptive triggers, and the PS VR2 Sense controllers also tied the experience to PlayStation’s input ecosystem.

PS VR2’s important limitations

  • It requires a PS5 for its main use case. If you do not already own Sony’s console, the total cost is substantially higher than the headset price alone.
  • It is tethered during PS5 play. This is a cable-connected console experience, not wireless standalone VR.
  • It is not compatible with PS4. Buying it for an older PlayStation console is not an option.
  • It does not support original PS VR games. A library of older PS VR software should not be assumed to carry over.
  • PC use requires a separate adapter and compatible computer. Sony’s PS VR2 PC adapter became available on August 7, 2024. That expanded the headset’s possible uses, but it did not make PS VR2 a fully wireless PC VR alternative or remove the need for PC hardware.

The PlayStation VR2 headset was the right purchase for a PS5 owner who cared about console-focused VR and platform-specific features. It was not the best general recommendation for someone starting from zero, especially if wireless use and standalone games were priorities.

4. Apple Vision Pro: best premium spatial-computing headset

Choose Apple Vision Pro only if your priority is premium spatial computing, spatial video, virtual displays, media, or Apple ecosystem integration—not conventional VR gaming value.

Apple Vision Pro became available in the United States on February 2, 2024, starting at $3,499 for 256GB. That price placed it in a fundamentally different category from Quest 3 and PS VR2.

  • CARDBOARD MONKENAUT — Get our best Gorilla Tag bundle yet with this Amazon exclusive deal. Purchase Meta Quest 3 to get exclusive items, including the Gorilla Space Program Suit and Helmet, plus 2,000 SHINY ROCKS.

  • NO WIRES, MORE FUN — Break free from cords. Game, play and explore in immersive worlds — untethered and without limits.
  • 2X GRAPHICAL PROCESSING POWER — Enjoy lightning-fast load times and next-gen graphics for smooth gaming powered by the Snapdragon XR2 Gen 2 processor.
  • EXPERIENCE VIRTUAL REALITY — Blend virtual objects with your physical space and experience two worlds at once in your VR headset.

Apple described Vision Pro as a spatial computer controlled with the user’s eyes, hands, and voice. Its technical profile was correspondingly ambitious: two micro-OLED displays with 23 million pixels in total, an Apple M2 chip, an R1 chip, support for 90Hz, 96Hz, and 100Hz refresh rates, and a stated photon-to-photon latency of 12 milliseconds.

At launch, Apple advertised more than 600 apps designed specifically for Vision Pro, along with more than one million compatible iPhone and iPad applications. Its strongest use cases included watching spatial video, placing large virtual displays in a room, viewing media in a private theater-like environment, and experimenting with emerging spatial-computing applications.

Vision Pro was a standalone device, but its external battery shaped how it was used. Apple advertised approximately two hours of general use and up to 2.5 hours of video playback, with longer sessions possible when connected to power.

It would be a mistake to rank Vision Pro first simply because its displays and processing hardware were more premium. It was not designed as a direct replacement for a Quest headset or a PS5 accessory. Its launch price, software positioning, battery arrangement, and Apple-centered interface made it a premium spatial computer for a narrower audience.

Prescription-lens buyers should also investigate compatibility and availability of ZEISS Optical Inserts for Apple Vision Pro before ordering. Optical inserts are an additional ownership consideration, not a universal requirement.

5. Valve Index: best for an established PC VR enthusiast

Choose Valve Index if you already have a powerful gaming PC, use SteamVR, and specifically want Valve’s controller and headset ecosystem.

Valve Index remained a serious enthusiast option in 2024. Its appeal came from direct access to PC VR and SteamVR, support for high refresh rates, and the Index controller ecosystem. It was aimed at people who already understood the trade-offs of PC-tethered VR rather than first-time buyers looking for the simplest setup.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Valve listed support for Windows 10, SteamOS, and Linux. The official requirements included a DisplayPort connection and USB 3.0 support for the headset cameras. Valve’s minimum graphics baseline was approximately an NVIDIA GTX 970 or AMD RX 480, although the minimum requirement should not be confused with a guarantee of ideal performance in every modern VR game.

  • Meta Quest Touch Pro Controllers translate instinctive hand gestures and detailed finger actions directly into VR with self-tracking cameras and precision controls. Multi-point, advanced haptics make virtual interactions feel entirely real

Index was not standalone. It required a compatible computer and a wired setup, so the total buying decision included the cost and capability of the PC, available ports, cable management, and the user’s willingness to troubleshoot PC VR. For someone already invested in SteamVR, those compromises could be acceptable. For a newcomer, Quest 3 was considerably easier to recommend.

6. HTC VIVE XR Elite: best niche convertible-form-factor option

Choose HTC VIVE XR Elite only when its convertible design, removable battery, adjustable optics, or HTC VIVE ecosystem matters more to you than mainstream value.

VIVE XR Elite combined standalone VR and mixed-reality features in a convertible design. HTC listed a Snapdragon XR2 processor, 128GB of storage, 12GB of RAM, 1920 by 1920 pixels per eye, a 90Hz refresh rate, up to a 110-degree field of view, four tracking cameras, and a depth sensor.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Its removable battery cradle was rated for up to two hours. The convertible form factor could appeal to buyers who valued a compact design and the ability to adjust the headset’s configuration, while the standalone and PC-streaming options gave it more flexibility than a PC-only headset.

The problem was not that VIVE XR Elite lacked interesting hardware. It was that its positioning and pricing made it difficult to recommend over Quest 3 for a typical consumer. Unless the convertible design or HTC’s ecosystem solved a specific problem for you, Quest 3 offered the more straightforward mainstream purchase.

Head-to-head comparison

Meta Quest 3 Best overall 2064 × 2208 per eye; pancake lenses Standalone Quest platform, mixed reality, optional PC VR Battery and fit are ongoing ownership considerations

Decision tree: which one should you buy?

  • Want one headset for games, fitness, social VR, and mixed reality without another device? Buy Meta Quest 3.
  • Want the least expensive current-generation entry point? Buy Meta Quest 3S, accepting its Fresnel lenses and lower per-eye resolution.
  • Already own a PS5 and want console VR? Buy PlayStation VR2.
  • Want premium virtual screens, spatial video, and Apple integration? Consider Apple Vision Pro, provided its price and battery arrangement fit your use.
  • Already have a strong PC and specifically want SteamVR and Index controllers? Consider Valve Index.
  • Need a compact convertible headset and prefer HTC’s ecosystem? Consider VIVE XR Elite; otherwise, Quest 3 is the easier recommendation.

Accessories and ownership costs

Do not treat every accessory as a required purchase. The headset should work in its standard configuration, and the right add-ons depend on fit, charging habits, prescription needs, and whether you travel with the device.

  • Quest 3 and Quest 3S: A Quest 3 elite strap, replacement facial interface, carrying case, charging cable, or charging dock may address specific comfort, storage, or charging needs. Check whether an accessory explicitly supports both Quest 3 and Quest 3S; model compatibility should not be assumed from a generic VR listing.
  • PlayStation VR2: A PS VR2 PC adapter is relevant only if you plan to use the headset with a compatible computer. A PS VR2 Sense controller charging station can make controller charging more convenient, but it is optional.
  • Apple Vision Pro: Prescription users should verify the availability and fit of ZEISS Optical Inserts. Their compatibility and cost should be checked separately from the headset.
  • VIVE XR Elite: The removable battery is part of the design. If considering a replacement battery or other replacement part, confirm that it is specifically for VIVE XR Elite rather than a visually similar HTC product.

These accessories can materially improve ownership, but they should not be used to disguise the real cost of a headset. Add the price of a strap, case, lenses, charging equipment, adapter, or PC only when your use case actually requires it.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Common buying mistakes

Buying PS VR2 without counting the PS5

PS VR2’s $549.99 launch price did not include a PS5. If you do not already own the console, compare the complete setup cost with a standalone Quest 3 or Quest 3S.

Best Value
Meta Quest 3 512GB | Virtual Reality — VR Headset — Renewed Premium
  • NEARLY 30% LEAP IN RESOLUTION — Experience every thrill in breathtaking detail with sharp graphics and stunning 4K Infinite Display.
  • NO WIRES, MORE FUN — Break free from cords. Play, explore and exercise in immersive worlds — untethered and without limits.
  • 2X GRAPHICAL PROCESSING POWER — Enjoy lightning-fast load times and next-gen graphics for smooth gaming powered by the Snapdragon XR2 Gen 2 processor.
  • EXPERIENCE VIRTUAL REALITY — Blend virtual objects with your physical space and experience two worlds at once.
  • 2+ HOURS OF BATTERY LIFE — Charge less, play longer and stay in the action with an improved battery that keeps up.

Assuming Quest 3S and Quest 3 have identical optics

They shared the Quest ecosystem and core mixed-reality direction, but the displays and lenses were different. Quest 3S used Fresnel lenses and 1832 by 1920 pixels per eye; Quest 3 used pancake lenses and 2064 by 2208 pixels per eye. Buyers who care about text and edge-to-edge clarity should not make the decision on processor and software access alone.

Choosing Apple Vision Pro as a gaming bargain

Vision Pro’s display and chip specifications were impressive, but its $3,499 starting price and spatial-computing focus made it a poor default recommendation for ordinary VR gaming. It made sense for a narrower buyer who valued Apple integration, spatial video, virtual displays, or premium media use.

Ignoring PC requirements

Valve Index requires a compatible PC, DisplayPort, USB 3.0, and the necessary graphics performance. Quest 3 and PS VR2 can also involve PC hardware in particular configurations, but neither fact makes a PC irrelevant. Check the specific game’s requirements and the headset’s connection method before buying.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Assuming older software libraries will transfer

PS VR2 did not support original PS VR games and was not compatible with PS4. Platform compatibility is a buying criterion, not a detail to check after purchase.

Our final 2024 ranking

  1. Meta Quest 3 — the best balance of standalone convenience, mixed reality, optics, performance, and optional PC VR.
  2. Meta Quest 3S — the best low-cost entry point, provided you accept the older Fresnel optical system.
  3. PlayStation VR2 — the best choice for PS5 owners who want OLED, eye tracking, haptics, and PlayStation software.
  4. Apple Vision Pro — the premium spatial-computing choice for Apple-focused productivity, media, and spatial experiences.
  5. Valve Index — a specialized choice for established SteamVR and PC VR enthusiasts.
  6. HTC VIVE XR Elite — a niche alternative for buyers who specifically value its convertible design and HTC ecosystem.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Meta Quest 3 better than Meta Quest 3S?

For most buyers who can afford the difference, yes. Quest 3 has pancake lenses and 2064 × 2208 pixels per eye, while Quest 3S uses Fresnel lenses and 1832 × 1920 pixels per eye. Quest 3S remains a good value if price is the priority and you mainly want access to the Quest library and mixed-reality features.

Do I need a PC to use Meta Quest 3 or Quest 3S?

No. Both are standalone headsets and can run their native Quest software without a gaming PC. PC VR is an optional use case, not a requirement.

Does PlayStation VR2 work with PS4 or original PS VR games?

No. PS VR2 requires a PS5 for its primary console experience, is not compatible with PS4, and does not support original PS VR games. PC use became possible through Sony’s separate PC adapter and a compatible computer.

Is Apple Vision Pro a gaming headset?

It can run games and other applications, but it was primarily positioned as a premium spatial computer. Its $3,499 U.S. starting price, Apple-centered software, external battery, and focus on spatial video and virtual displays made it a poor default choice for conventional VR gaming.

The Bottom Line

For the typical 2024 buyer, get Meta Quest 3. Get Quest 3S when saving money matters most, PlayStation VR2 when you already own a PS5, Apple Vision Pro when you specifically want premium spatial computing, Valve Index when you are already committed to SteamVR, and VIVE XR Elite only when its convertible design solves a particular need.
