There isn’t a proven “much better” way to play the original Metal Gear Solid for everyone. Konami’s Master Collection is the straightforward option on current consoles and PC, GOG sells a separate Windows version of the 2000 PC port, and original PlayStation hardware remains a choice for players who want that specific setup. The right pick depends on the version and presentation you want, the platform you own, and how much troubleshooting you’re willing to do.
What the Master Collection includes
Konami’s Master Collection product page lists Metal Gear Solid with VR Missions/Special Missions. The collection is available for PC/Steam, PlayStation 4 and 5, Xbox Series X|S, and Nintendo Switch. Konami describes the package as including “the classic versions of the games, complete with only minimal edits to copyrighted contents.” That describes the collection’s treatment of the games, not a comparison proving it is better or worse than another release.

How the Master Collection handles the picture
Konami documents Standard, Pixel Perfect, and 16:9 display modes for the collection’s MGS1 release, along with screen filters and a scanline effect intended to evoke a CRT display. The 16:9 option stretches the original picture, including letterboxed content, to fill a widescreen display; it does not preserve the original proportions. The available controls and their labels may vary by platform, so consult the official MGS1 information page for the applicable build.

When the GOG PC release makes sense
GOG sells a separate Windows release that it identifies as the original 2000 PC port. Its store listing and support guidance describe compatibility changes and optional fan-made fixes. That makes it a distinct PC route for someone specifically interested in the PC port, not an established upgrade over the Master Collection. Vendor compatibility notes are not an independent comparison of image quality, controls, or overall experience.
Check PC controls before choosing
Control guidance has changed over time. Konami’s Steam requirements article, updated October 24, 2023, says an XInput controller is required and keyboard and mouse are unsupported. A 2026 PC Gamer report says later updates added MGS1 keyboard settings. Because the older requirements page may not reflect those changes, check the current controls and patch status for the specific PC version you plan to use rather than relying on a blanket claim.

If your priority is playing the original PlayStation release on original hardware, a physical PS1 copy is the relevant route. It is not a universal improvement: used-disc condition, region compatibility, the console’s condition, and availability all matter. Check those details for the particular copy and hardware before buying; no current stock or price is established here.

For most players seeking convenient access, start by checking whether the Master Collection is available on your platform and set its display mode to suit your preference. Choose GOG if you specifically want the PC port and are comfortable checking compatibility guidance. Choose original hardware when the console experience itself is part of what you want. No comparative playtest establishes a single winner across these routes.
