Blockchain gaming has moved beyond the early image of collectible cats and games built around earning tokens. Today, it covers everything from conventional games that tokenize selected items to fully onchain games whose rules and state live in smart contracts. The important question is not simply whether a game has NFTs, but what the blockchain actually does—and whether that makes the game better to play.

What is blockchain gaming?

Blockchain gaming describes games that use a blockchain for some part of their assets, rules, or operations. The term covers a wide range of designs, not one standard way to build a game.

Games that put selected assets onchain

Some games use conventional servers and gameplay systems but represent certain items as tokens or NFTs. A blockchain may record who owns an item or when it changed hands, while the game’s studio still controls the servers, rules, and access to play.

Fully onchain games

At the more experimental end, a game’s core rules and state are encoded in smart contracts. This can make game activity publicly verifiable and allow others to build tools or extensions around the same rules. It does not mean every part of the experience is onchain, or that a game will keep operating forever without its creators.

Ethereum.org’s Gaming on Ethereum guide, last updated October 6, 2026, describes both approaches. Ronan Sandford, creator of Conquest.eth, said he was drawn to “creating games that run and evolve independently of their creator.” That is a creator’s motivation, not a guarantee about the lifespan of any individual game.

How is blockchain gaming different from play-to-earn?

Play-to-earn was an influential early model, especially in 2020 and 2021, when some games required players to acquire NFTs to participate and tied gameplay to token rewards. It helped make blockchain games visible, but it also put financial incentives ahead of the question of whether a game was enjoyable on its own.

That history has not vanished, and the evidence does not show that one newer model has replaced it or won mass adoption. The design conversation now also includes game quality, verifiable ownership, transparent rules, community extensions, and easier onboarding. A game can still offer tokens or NFTs without making earning the main purpose.

The Blockchain Game Alliance’s 2024 report excerpt says 71.1% of surveyed industry respondents named digital asset ownership as blockchain gaming’s leading perceived benefit. That figure reflects professional opinion, not a poll of players or proof that most players want NFTs.

What can blockchain add to a game?

  • Verifiable ownership history: A public ledger can show token transfers and ownership records, rather than relying only on a game’s private database.
  • Transferable digital goods: Depending on the game and its rules, players may be able to transfer or sell tokenized items outside the game.
  • Transparent rules: When game logic is implemented in smart contracts, some rules and state changes can be inspected and independently verified.
  • Community-built extensions: Openly accessible contracts may let other developers build tools or experiences that interact with a game’s systems.

These are possibilities, not automatic benefits. Owning an NFT does not guarantee that another game will recognize it, that the item will retain value, or that it will remain useful if the original game’s servers or services disappear.

Can you really own items in blockchain games?

You can own a blockchain token associated with an in-game item, subject to the network and wallet rules. That gives you control over the token in a way that a simple entry in a studio’s private database may not. But the token and the playable item are not always the same thing.

The game may need to recognize the token, keep its servers online, and continue supporting the relevant content for the item to work as intended. An NFT also does not automatically grant rights to use an asset in another game. Cross-game utility depends on technical integration, compatible formats, and decisions by the games involved; the available evidence does not establish that interoperability is common in practice.

What blockchain games can you play now?

Ethereum.org’s guide lists examples across several genres. These illustrate variety, not popularity, market share, or an independent quality ranking.

Game Example genre or format What the guide says
Dark Forest Punk Strategy Listed as a strategy game.
Parallel Turn-based card strategy Listed as a free-to-play turn-based card strategy game.
Battle Bears Shooter Listed as a cross-platform shooter.
Sunflower Land Farming Listed as a farming game.
Asphodel: Prologue Roguelike autobattler The guide says it launched on Ethereum L1 in July 2026.

The same guide notes that most games still use Layer 2 networks to reduce fees, while Asphodel: Prologue is an example of a game launched on Ethereum L1. Check a game’s official instructions before playing: its supported network, access model, and wallet requirements can change.

Do you need a crypto wallet to play blockchain games?

It depends on the game. Some require a wallet and a network token to access or use onchain features. Others reduce the setup burden with social-account sign-in, account abstraction, sponsored transactions, or session keys. Those options can let players avoid funding a wallet themselves or signing every action, though the exact experience varies.

Layer 2 networks are also used to reduce transaction costs. A typical setup may involve choosing a game, creating or connecting a wallet, funding it with ETH or a token for the relevant network, then playing. Follow the selected game’s current official onboarding instructions rather than assuming every title uses the same steps or currency.

Why did CryptoKitties matter?

CryptoKitties became a prominent Ethereum game in 2017 and helped bring blockchain gaming to wider attention. Its popularity also drove up Ethereum gas fees for users generally, illustrating how demand could expose the network’s throughput limits. It is an important episode, but not the sole origin of blockchain games.

What is shaping the industry now?

For games to reach and retain players, the underlying technology has to support good play rather than become an obstacle. The Blockchain Game Alliance’s 2025 State of the Industry summary reports that 29.5% of industry-professional respondents selected high-quality game launches as the leading driver of future industry success. In the same survey, 32.6% named lack of funding or investment as their company’s biggest operational challenge. These are industry views, not measures of player adoption or revenue.

The report also says 38.9% of respondents identified AI-enabled cheating, bots, and exploits as the largest risk of AI adoption. That is a concern about AI in the industry, not a count of security incidents in blockchain games.

For players deciding whether to try a title, a more useful test than token prices is whether the blockchain adds something worthwhile to the game. Consider its genre and depth, which parts are actually onchain, the amount of wallet and transaction friction, network costs and performance, and whether items have any practical use beyond their original game.
