Then work through graphics, DirectX, file-repair, mod, permissions, and security checks in that order. These are Bethesda’s recommended troubleshooting steps, not guaranteed fixes.
First, identify your platform and symptom
Bethesda’s launch troubleshooting applies to PC. It does not establish equivalent steps for Xbox Series X|S or PlayStation 5, so do not apply Windows settings to a console.

Also distinguish a game that never opens from one that starts and then crashes, or one that stays open but runs poorly. Some later checks—such as reducing graphics quality or disabling overlays—are especially relevant to crashes and performance problems.

Check PC requirements, then restart
- Compare your PC with the game’s current minimum system requirements. Bethesda warns that a system below minimum requirements may not launch the game or may be unplayable. The support guidance cited here does not establish the exact CPU, GPU, memory, or storage figures, so check the current requirements listing rather than relying on an old specification.
- Fully exit Steam or the Xbox App for PC, reopen the launcher, and try the game again.

Check the graphics hardware, drivers, and DirectX
- Select the intended GPU. On a laptop or a PC with more than one graphics processor, confirm the game is assigned to the correct GPU.
- Check for current graphics drivers. Use the official AMD or NVIDIA driver information for your hardware. Bethesda’s support page gives specific driver-version recommendations, but those are time-sensitive and should not be treated as current without verification.
- Check DirectX files. Bethesda recommends ensuring required DirectX files are installed and links to Microsoft’s instructions for reinstalling DirectX runtime libraries: How to install the latest version of DirectX.
Repair the game files and remove mods
Use the repair or file-verification instructions for the launcher where you own the game. Bethesda provides separate directions for Steam and the Microsoft Xbox App for PC. If you have installed mods, remove them before reinstalling, then repair the game files again. Keep reinstalling as a later step rather than the first thing you try.

Check Windows permissions and antivirus exclusions
Bethesda recommends ensuring your Windows account has administrator permissions and checking whether your antivirus is blocking the game. If needed, add the game to that product’s exclusions using its own instructions; antivirus menus vary. Do not turn off antivirus protection wholesale as a troubleshooting shortcut.
If the game starts but crashes or runs poorly
For a game that launches and then crashes, Bethesda recommends checking the minimum requirements and installing the game on an SSD rather than an HDD. An SSD is not a universal launch fix: it will not by itself resolve driver, file-integrity, permissions, mod, or other issues.

If the game stays open but performs poorly, try the additional checks Bethesda lists:
- Lower graphics quality and close unused apps, including chat, browser, and music apps.
- Disable Steam Overlay or Xbox Game Bar to see whether an overlay is involved.
- Confirm the correct GPU is selected; on a laptop, connect the charger and choose a high-performance power setting.
- Revert changed video settings to their auto-detected values. If you use Steam, try its “Launch in Safe Mode” option where available.
These steps come from Bethesda’s PC guidance for crashes and performance issues. They are diagnostic recommendations, not proof that any one setting causes every startup failure.

Use a new Windows profile only if earlier checks fail
Bethesda suggests testing a new Windows user profile if its earlier performance troubleshooting does not help. If the game works under the new profile, that can indicate a conflict tied to the original profile. Bethesda also points to Selective Startup as a way to isolate a conflict. This is a later diagnostic step, not a guaranteed repair.
Get help for your platform
If you play on Steam, use its Oblivion Remastered gameplay or technical issue support route if the checks above do not resolve the problem. For Xbox console or PlayStation 5 launch failures, consult the relevant platform’s official support and Bethesda Support; the PC instructions above do not establish console-specific fixes.
