On the Steam PC version of The Forest, enable cheats in the gameplay or server settings, return to the fully loaded main title screen, and type developermodeon as one word. Enter it blindly: the game normally shows no text box or success message. Start or load a game, then press F1 to toggle the developer console; F2 displays console status and log information. The command must be entered before you enter a save.

Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors- Open The Forest and wait until the main title screen has completely loaded.
- Open the gameplay, multiplayer, or server settings and enable cheats. Cheat permission and developer-console activation are separate settings.
- Return to the title screen. Do not load a save yet.
- Type
developermodeonwith no spaces. Type it even though no field, cursor, or confirmation message appears. - Start a new game or load a save.
- Press F1. A working developer console should toggle on screen. Press F2 to view console status or log information.
If this sequence produces no result, do not keep typing the command inside the save or into the console. Work through the symptom-specific checks below.
How The Forest dev mode is layered
There are three different mechanisms that players often call “dev mode.” Separating them makes the failure easier to identify.
#1 Best Overall
- Unlimited hours of gameplay
- Explore - Huge, unique and rich environments, offering the freedom to play the game however you want
- Craft - craft and repair weapons, clothes, armour, tools, vehicles, and more
- Build - Take over a ruin, or build from the ground-up. Design your fortress to include traps and defensive positions to survive the undead
- Cooperate or Compete - Includes two player split screen mode, with support for up to 4 players online, in Player versus Player, co-op survival, or co-op creative modes
The title-screen activation command
developermodeon is a title-screen command. It is not entered into an in-game chat box, a save file, or the console that appears after pressing F1. The command is deliberately silent: it accepts keyboard input without displaying the characters and normally does not provide a confirmation message. A silent entry is therefore expected, not proof that it failed.
The title screen must be fully loaded before you type. If you enter the command while a save is loading, while a menu is still transitioning, or after you are already controlling the character, it may not be recognized.

Cheat permission
Cheats are a separate permission layer. Enable them in the relevant gameplay or server settings before entering the title-screen command. In multiplayer, the host controls this permission. A client cannot turn on cheats for a host who has disabled them.
The F1 and F2 console controls
After activation and after entering a game, F1 toggles the developer console. F2 opens console status and log information. These keys are a verification step as well as a way to use commands: if F1 works, the console system is responding even when a particular command later has no obvious visual effect.

Fixes for each failure symptom
Nothing happens when you type developermodeon
- Confirm that you are on the fully loaded main title screen, not in a save, pause menu, lobby, or in-game console.
- Retype the command as exactly
developermodeon. It has no spaces and is entered as one continuous word. - Do not wait for a text field, echo, sound, or success banner. The normal workflow is blind entry with no confirmation.
- Check that cheats were enabled in gameplay or server settings before you returned to the title screen.
- Exit to the title screen and repeat the sequence from the beginning. Entering the command after loading the save is the most common ordering error.
F1 does nothing after entering a game
First test F2. If F2 opens the status or log display, the console input path is responding and the issue may be limited to the F1 key or the keyboard layout. If neither key responds, check the following:
- Use the function-key combination required by your keyboard. Many laptops and compact keyboards assign media controls to the function row, so the key may require Fn+F1 or Fn+F2.
- Try a standard external USB keyboard with dedicated F1 and F2 keys. The game requires blind text entry as well as function-key input, so a keyboard that exposes the full function row removes two common variables.
- Make sure the game window has focus. Click the game window once, then press F1 again rather than sending the key to another application.
- Verify that you are playing the Steam PC edition. The full developer-console workflow is not available in VR, and PS4 does not provide the same console.
- Repeat activation from the title screen. Pressing F1 alone cannot substitute for entering
developermodeonfirst.
F1 opens the console, but a command does not work
This is a different problem from failed activation. A functioning console does not guarantee that every command remains available or produces an obvious on-screen change. Commands can be version-sensitive, removed, changed, or visually silent. Check spelling and syntax, then test a command whose result is easy to observe. If F1 and F2 work while one command does not, leave dev mode enabled and investigate that command rather than repeating the activation process.
The console works in single-player but not multiplayer
Multiplayer permissions belong to the host or server. Ask the host to enable cheats in the session settings before activating the console. If you are connecting as a client, your local copy cannot override a host’s disabled setting. For a dedicated server, the server configuration can use allowcheats on or allowcheats off; a configuration change may require a server restart before it takes effect.
Platform differences that determine whether dev mode can work
| Platform | Supported input path | Permission requirement | What to expect |
|---|---|---|---|
| Steam PC | Type developermodeon on the fully loaded title screen, then use F1 in the game; F2 shows status and logs. |
Enable cheats in gameplay or multiplayer/server settings. The host controls this in multiplayer. | Full developer-console system is documented for this edition. |
| PS4 | Connected keyboard can enter certain game-mode codes. | Use the platform’s supported game-mode code path. | Only limited game-mode codes are supported; it does not provide the full PC developer console or the same F1 workflow. |
| VR | The Steam-PC title-screen and F1 sequence is not available. | The PC console permission path does not apply. | The full developer console is unsupported. |
If you are troubleshooting on PS4 or VR, repeating the PC command will not create a missing console. Use the platform-specific capabilities instead.

Keyboard and function-key troubleshooting
The activation sequence depends on ordinary keyboard text input even though no text box is visible. A keyboard can therefore fail in two separate places: it may not send the blind title-screen text correctly, or it may send F1 and F2 as media commands rather than function keys.
Check the function row
- Press F2 after loading a game. If the status or log display appears, the keyboard is sending the required function key.
- If the key controls volume, brightness, playback, or another media function, hold Fn while pressing F1 or F2.
- On a compact keyboard, use the manufacturer’s function-layer shortcut to lock the F-row in standard function mode, if available.
- As a practical isolation test, connect a standard USB keyboard and repeat the title-screen entry and F1 check.
Check focus and competing software
Keep the game window active while entering the command and pressing the function keys. If another application has focus, the keystrokes may never reach the game. An on-screen overlay can also intercept function keys; close overlays temporarily when testing so that F1 and F2 are delivered directly to The Forest.

Multiplayer and dedicated-server checks
Host-created sessions
In a hosted multiplayer game, the host must allow cheats. The host should enable the setting before returning to the title screen and entering developermodeon. Other players cannot activate the host’s disabled cheat permission from their own computers. If the host changes the setting while players are already connected, have everyone leave and rejoin after the host restarts or recreates the session.
Dedicated servers
Dedicated-server administrators can set allowcheats on to permit cheats or allowcheats off to deny them. Apply the setting in the server configuration used by the running server, then restart when required so the new permission is loaded. A client-side title-screen command cannot bypass a server that is still running with cheats disabled.
Why local testing helps
If you are unsure whether the problem is your keyboard or the server permission, test the sequence in a local single-player game. A successful F1 check there confirms that the PC edition and keyboard path work; you can then focus on the host or dedicated-server configuration rather than reinstalling the game.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Why guides and commands can disagree
The console interface can remain functional while individual commands age out. A guide written for an earlier game build may list commands that have been removed, renamed, or made dependent on a particular mode. Some commands intentionally change an internal state without producing a prominent message.

- Press F1 and confirm that the console appears.
- Press F2 and confirm that status or log information responds.
- Check the command’s spelling and required parameters.
- Consider whether the command belongs to an older guide or a different game mode.
- Look for an observable result in the game world, not only a confirmation message.
Do not treat a silent command as proof that dev mode failed. The meaningful distinction is whether the console itself responds.
Should you use Steam launch options?
Steam’s general help documentation lists options such as -dev and -console, but also warns that launch options do not apply to most third-party games. For The Forest, the documented workflow is the title-screen developermodeon command followed by F1. Treat launch options as a separate experiment, not the primary fix.

- Experience an original story based on the Legend of blair Witch from the makers of layers of fear
- navigate your way through a cursed Forest that warps and distorts both time and space
- stand against the horrors of the blair Witch and the decaying sanity of a man burdened by his past
If you have added launch options while troubleshooting, remove them temporarily and retest the documented sequence. This gives you a clean baseline and prevents an unrelated option from changing startup behavior. Adding more flags will not correct a command entered on the wrong screen or a host with cheats disabled.
A complete decision path
Use the branch that matches what you see instead of repeating every step:
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- No activation and no console: return to the fully loaded title screen, enable cheats, enter
developermodeonblindly with no spaces, then load a game and test F1. - F1 does nothing, but you are on PC: test F2, use Fn with the function key, confirm game-window focus, and try an external USB keyboard.
- F1 and F2 both fail: verify that you are not on VR, that you are running the Steam PC edition, and that activation happened before entering the save.
- Console opens but one command fails: keep dev mode enabled; check the command’s spelling, parameters, game mode, and age.
- Single-player works but multiplayer fails: have the host enable cheats, or set
allowcheats onon the dedicated server and restart if necessary. - PS4 or VR: stop using the PC troubleshooting path. PS4 supports only limited keyboard-entered game-mode codes, while VR does not support the full developer console.
What a successful setup looks like
A correct Steam PC setup has four observable properties: cheats are permitted in the applicable settings; developermodeon was entered on the fully loaded title screen before the save was entered; F1 toggles the developer console in the game; and F2 displays console status or logs. Once those checks pass, failures from individual commands should be treated as command-specific or version-related, not as evidence that dev mode is still disabled.
