The Galaxy Z Fold8’s 7.6-inch inner display, with its 4:3 aspect ratio, gives Nintendo DS emulation room to show both screens on one unfolded phone. That shape is the clearest reason to choose it for the job. It does not, by itself, prove that every game runs well, that touchscreen controls feel comfortable, or that the phone lasts through a long session. Those questions depend on the emulator, configuration and your own use.
Why the Fold8 suits Nintendo DS’s two-screen layout
Nintendo DS games use two displays, and the Fold8’s unfolded inner screen offers a large, nearly square canvas for arranging them together. Samsung lists the main display as 7.6 inches; Samsung Mobile Press specifies a 4:3 aspect ratio. Those are useful physical characteristics, not evidence that a particular emulator can position both screens exactly as you want.

The distinction matters: screen dimensions tell you what the hardware can display, while the emulator’s layout controls determine how much space each DS screen gets and where they sit. Check the layout options in your installed emulator and try them with the games you intend to play before assuming the arrangement will suit you.

melonDS is an open-source Nintendo DS emulator with an Android download provided by the project. Its Google Play app is described as an unofficial Android port, so treat the project’s download page and the Play listing as distinct sources for the Android version and its setup information.

The Play listing says some emulation features require custom BIOS and firmware files extracted from real hardware. They are not bundled with the app. Consult the project’s installation guidance for the version you install; setup and available features can vary by app version.
Neither the listing nor the manufacturer’s phone specifications establish compatibility or performance for every DS game on the Fold8. If a game matters to you, test that title with your chosen emulator and settings rather than treating general device specifications as a compatibility guarantee. Use game files you are legally entitled to use; the app listing does not settle the legal status of obtaining or using them.

What the published specs do—and don’t—tell you
Samsung names Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 for Galaxy as the Fold8’s processor. That identifies the marketed chip, but it is not a Nintendo DS emulation benchmark. The available specifications also do not establish game-by-game compatibility, emulator speed, control comfort, sustained heat or battery life during play.

Samsung lists a 4800mAh typical battery capacity, with a 4660mAh rated capacity. Capacity describes the battery, not how long DS emulation will run. Samsung’s “up to 26 hours” figure is for continuous local 720p video playback on the main screen under internal laboratory conditions; actual video playback may vary. It should not be used as a gaming-runtime estimate.
What to check before choosing it for DS play
- Screen layout: Confirm the emulator can place and size both DS screens usefully on the unfolded display.
- Controls: Try the touchscreen controls with your games, paying attention to where buttons sit in relation to both screens. A physical controller may change the experience, but no Fold8-specific controller test is established here.
- Game behavior: Check the titles you actually play in your chosen emulator version and settings. A general specification cannot stand in for a title-specific test.
- Long sessions: Observe heat and battery drain during your own repeatable play session. Video playback figures do not predict either one.
- Cost: The Fold8 is a premium foldable phone. Compare its current local price with other options before buying specifically for emulation; prices and availability vary by region.
Availability and software notes
Samsung said general availability began August 7, 2026. Check the current Samsung listing for your region for stock, storage configuration and price. Samsung’s model-specific software update notice concerns the SM-F971Q and says rollout varies; it is not a guarantee that every regional model receives an update at the same time.
